What does a freelance Shopify developer actually do?
A freelance Shopify developer turns a Shopify account into a store that fits your products, your customers and your operations. Shopify supplies hosting, security, the checkout engine and the admin panel. The developer handles everything specific to your business: theme layout, product structure, payments, shipping, taxes, apps, integrations and speed.
Much of the value lies in what the developer chooses not to do. A store can be assembled from a paid theme and fifteen apps in a weekend, and it will look complete. It will also load slowly, cost a lot every month and break when two apps disagree. A good freelance Shopify developer writes the few features you need into the theme itself and keeps the app list short.
At BtechWaleTech, one of us leads theme and integration work, another of us covers store SEO, analytics and data exports, and the third of us plans the build and manages automation such as order updates on WhatsApp. You work with all three in one group chat.

Is Shopify the right platform for an Indian online store?
Shopify is a strong choice when you want to start selling quickly, would rather not manage servers or security updates, and have a catalogue that fits standard product and variant structures. Clothing, cosmetics, home decor, snacks, handicrafts and accessories usually fit well.
It is a weaker choice when your business logic is unusual: complex B2B pricing per customer, rentals, heavy customisation at checkout, or tight integration with an in-house ERP. It also carries a monthly platform cost for as long as the store runs, which suits businesses with steady sales better than stores that sell a few items a month.
Choose Shopify when
You want a stable hosted store within weeks, your team will manage products and orders from a simple admin, and monthly platform costs are acceptable against your sales.
Choose WooCommerce when
You already run WordPress, want full control of the server and data, or need plugins that suit Indian invoicing workflows, and you accept the upkeep that comes with it.
Choose a custom store when
Your pricing, checkout or catalogue rules do not fit any platform, or you need deep ERP links. Custom builds start at ₹60,000 and take longer.
A side-by-side of platforms is on freelance ecommerce developer.
Free theme, paid theme or custom: how a freelance Shopify developer handles themes
Start with a well-built Online Store 2.0 theme and customise it; building a full theme from scratch is rarely worth the cost for a new brand. Shopify’s free themes are fast and well maintained. Paid themes from the Theme Store add layouts and features but can also add weight you never use.
Customisation happens in Liquid, Shopify’s template language, plus JSON templates and sections. A freelance Shopify developer can add a size chart that pulls from product metafields, a “complete the look” block, a pincode delivery estimate, bundle offers or a bulk order table for wholesale buyers, all as sections your team can move around in the theme editor.
Two rules keep themes healthy. Never edit the live theme directly: duplicate it, work on the copy and publish when approved. And keep custom code in clearly named sections and snippets, so a future theme update or another developer can find it. We document every customisation in the handover notes.
Which Shopify apps are worth paying for, according to a freelance Shopify developer?
Pay for an app when it does something that needs ongoing servers or data you cannot run in the theme, such as shipping label generation, reviews with photo moderation, WhatsApp messaging or subscription billing. Avoid apps for features a developer can build once into the theme, such as badges, size charts, trust icons or simple upsell blocks.
Each app adds a monthly charge and often a script that loads on every page. Ten apps at modest prices become a large yearly bill, and their scripts are the most common reason a Shopify store feels slow on a budget phone. Removing an app does not always remove its code either, so a store that has tried many apps often carries leftovers in the theme.
Before launch we list every app with its purpose, monthly cost and whether it touches page speed. For existing stores, an app audit is usually the quickest speed and cost win available.
- Keep: shipping and courier, reviews, invoicing, messaging, subscriptions
- Build into the theme: badges, size charts, simple upsells, announcement bars
- Question: any app that duplicates a Shopify built-in feature
- Remove: trial apps nobody uses, and their leftover code
UPI, cards and cash on delivery on a Shopify store in India
Indian buyers expect UPI first, then cards, net banking and wallets, and many still want cash on delivery. On Shopify in India, online payments run through a third-party payment provider that supports these methods, connected from the Shopify admin. Shopify may add its own transaction fee on third-party providers depending on your plan, so check the current plan page and factor it into margins.
Cash on delivery is available as a manual payment method, but it needs controls. COD orders are cancelled or refused far more often than prepaid ones, and every returned parcel costs you shipping both ways. A freelance Shopify developer can set a COD order limit, add a small COD fee, restrict COD by pincode, send an automated WhatsApp confirmation before dispatch and offer a discount for switching to UPI.
We test every method with real small-value orders before launch: a UPI payment from a phone, a card payment, a COD order and a refund. That catches settlement, webhook and notification problems while no customer is waiting.
Shipping setup for Indian pincodes and couriers: the freelance Shopify developer checklist
Shipping inside India is where many new Shopify stores lose money quietly, and it is the setup a freelance Shopify developer should spend real time on. Flat-rate shipping undercharges heavy orders and overcharges light ones, and a customer in a pincode your courier cannot reach will simply get a cancelled order.
A proper setup uses zones and weight slabs that match your courier contract, a free-shipping threshold that fits your margins, and a pincode check on the product page so buyers know before checkout whether and when you can deliver. Courier aggregator apps then pull paid orders, generate labels and push tracking numbers back to Shopify, which sends tracking to the customer automatically.
For fragile, heavy or perishable products, packaging dimensions matter as much as weight, because couriers bill on volumetric weight. We set product weights and package sizes during catalogue setup, so the rates your customer sees match what the courier charges you.
GST invoices, taxes and required product details
Shopify can apply taxes, but GST-compliant invoices usually need an invoicing app or a custom template that shows your GSTIN, HSN codes, the tax split between CGST and SGST or IGST, and the buyer’s details. We set this up with a sample invoice your accountant approves before launch, rather than discovering format problems at filing time.
B2B buyers often want to enter their own GSTIN so they can claim input credit; that can be captured at checkout or in the cart. For packaged goods, Indian rules expect product pages to show declarations such as MRP, net quantity, manufacturer or importer details and country of origin. We add these as structured product fields so they display consistently on every product.
Store policies matter too: refund, cancellation, shipping and privacy pages are required by payment providers and read by customers deciding whether to trust a new brand. We draft them from your actual process for you to confirm, not from a generic template.
How much does a freelance Shopify developer charge for a new store?
With BtechWaleTech, a Shopify store build starts at ₹50,000. The quote then moves with four things: how many custom sections and product templates the theme needs, how many products and variants must be imported and cleaned, how many integrations are required (courier, invoicing, WhatsApp, ERP or accounting), and whether content and product photography editing are included.
Across freelancers, Shopify quotes vary widely. The honest way to compare them is to ask each one for the same list: which theme, which apps with their monthly cost, what custom code, which payment and shipping setup, what testing and what support after launch. A cheaper build that relies on eight paid apps can cost more within a year than a pricier build with two.
Remember the running costs as well: the Shopify plan, any paid theme licence, apps and payment provider charges. We put these in the quote as an estimated monthly figure, billed by those providers straight to you.
Budget planning for online stores in general is covered on hiring an ecommerce developer.
How long does it take to build a Shopify store?
Plan for four to eight weeks. The lower end fits a store with a clean catalogue of up to a hundred or so products, a customised theme and standard payments and shipping. The upper end fits stores with custom sections, large catalogue imports, wholesale pricing or several integrations.
Week one covers the brief, store structure (collections, product types, variants, metafields) and account setup. Weeks two and three customise the theme on a duplicate and build the product page template. Weeks three to five import and clean the catalogue and set up payments, shipping, taxes and invoices. The final stretch is testing with real orders, speed work, SEO and launch.
Product data is the usual bottleneck. Send your catalogue as a spreadsheet with titles, descriptions, prices, variants, weights and image file names early, and the timeline holds.
Who should own the Shopify store account when a freelance Shopify developer builds it?
You should. The Shopify store must be created under your email as the store owner, billed to your card, with your domain connected. The developer then requests collaborator access, which Shopify provides for exactly this purpose. You approve the request, can limit which areas the developer sees, and can remove access with one click.
Some developers build stores inside their own partner account and promise to transfer ownership later. That can work, but it leaves a step to chase and a period where you do not control your own business. We prefer the store to be yours from the first day, with payment provider, courier and app accounts also registered to your business.
Custom theme code is yours too. We keep a copy of every theme version in a Git repository you can access, so changes can be tracked and rolled back even outside Shopify’s own theme history.
Shopify SEO and speed: what a freelance Shopify developer should fix
Shopify handles several SEO basics automatically, including sitemaps and canonical tags, but many stores still lose traffic through thin collection pages, duplicate product descriptions copied from suppliers and slow themes overloaded with apps.
Useful fixes include writing unique introductory copy for each collection, adding product schema with price, availability and reviews, setting clean title and description templates, compressing and correctly sizing images, and linking products from collections and blog guides. Shopify’s URL structure is fixed around paths such as products and collections, so we plan handles carefully before launch to avoid redirects later.
Speed work centres on the theme and apps. We measure Core Web Vitals on a real budget Android phone on mobile data, trim unused app scripts, lazy-load images below the fold and limit font files. For ongoing growth, ecommerce SEO covers category strategy in more depth.
Moving an existing store to Shopify without losing orders or rankings
Migrating to Shopify from WooCommerce, Wix, a custom store or a spreadsheet of marketplace listings follows a set order: export, clean, import, redirect, test. Products, variants, images, customers and past orders can all be moved; customer passwords cannot, so customers are invited to set new ones.
The step most often skipped is redirects. Old product and category URLs must point to their new Shopify equivalents through URL redirects in the admin, or the search traffic and backlinks those pages earned are lost. We build a redirect map from a crawl of the old store, not from memory, and check it after launch in Google Search Console.
Timing matters for live stores. We freeze product edits on the old store for a short window, run a final delta import, then switch the domain during a quiet sales period. More on the general method is on website migration freelancer.
How to vet a freelance Shopify developer before paying an advance
Ask to see live stores, not screenshots, and open them on your phone. Then ask how they would handle your checkout, shipping and invoices specifically. A developer who has shipped Indian stores will talk about COD return rates, pincode coverage and GST invoice formats without prompting.
- Will the store be created in my account, with you as a collaborator?
- Which apps do you plan to use, and what does each cost monthly?
- Which features will you code into the theme instead of adding apps?
- How will you test UPI, card and COD payments before launch?
- How will shipping rates match my courier contract?
- What does support after launch include, and for how long?
Red flags include refusing collaborator access, asking for your Shopify owner password, a quote with no app list, and promises of guaranteed sales or top rankings. For hiring-focused detail, see hire a Shopify developer.
Worked example: a knitwear brand moving from Instagram to Shopify
This is a hypothetical scenario to show the decisions involved. Picture a small knitwear label that has sold through Instagram DMs for two years, with about 80 designs in several sizes and colours, taking payment by UPI screenshots and shipping through a local courier.
Week one sets up the store in the owner’s account, defines collections by product type and occasion, and maps sizes and colours as variants with a size chart held in metafields. A free Online Store 2.0 theme is customised with a lookbook section and a pincode delivery estimate. Payments connect through an Indian payment provider for UPI and cards, and COD is enabled only above a set order value, with WhatsApp confirmation before dispatch.
Weeks three to five import the catalogue from a cleaned spreadsheet, link a courier aggregator app, and set up GST invoices approved by the brand’s accountant. After test orders on three phones, the store launches with Search Console and product schema. The app list stays at four. A build like this would start from ₹50,000, with catalogue cleanup listed as a separate line.
Freelance Shopify developer across India
Shopify work is fully remote: we join your store as collaborators, share preview links of the duplicate theme and test orders from our own phones. That makes location irrelevant to the build, whether you run a textile brand in Tiruppur, a hosiery label in Ludhiana or a home furnishing line in Panipat.
We also support brands selling brassware from Moradabad, footwear from Agra, handicrafts and furniture from Jodhpur, silk from Varanasi and Bhagalpur, and sports goods from Meerut and Jalandhar. Each needs different product structures, packaging weights and shipping zones, which is exactly what the setup phase is for.
For brands selling abroad, Shopify Markets supports local currencies and domains, and we can set up international shipping and duties display. Overseas founders can read our USA, UK and UAE pages on working with an Indian team.
