What does a freelance web developer actually do?
A freelance web developer turns your business goal into a working website and keeps it running, without being on your payroll. In practice that covers five jobs: planning the pages, designing the layout, writing the code, putting it live on hosting, and fixing or improving it afterwards.
The word “developer” matters. A designer can make a site look right in a mock-up; a developer makes forms send email, pages load fast on a budget Android phone, and Google read the structure. Many freelancers do both. At BtechWaleTech, one of us handles full-stack builds, another of us covers hosting on AWS, data and technical SEO, and the third of us runs the project plan and automation, so each part has an owner.
What a freelance web developer usually does not do: print brochures, run your social media, shoot product photos or visit your shop. Ask up front which of these you need and who will do them.
- Plan: sitemap, page list, what each page must make a visitor do
- Design: layouts for phone first, then desktop
- Build: HTML, CSS, JavaScript or a framework, plus forms and integrations
- Launch: domain, hosting, SSL, Google Search Console, analytics
- Maintain: updates, backups, fixes, small changes
When a freelance web developer is the right choice, and when it is not
Hire a freelance web developer when the project has a clear end, a budget under what an agency would ask, and you want to speak to the person doing the work. That covers most small business websites, startup launch pages, content sites and first online stores.
Pick something else in these cases. If you need a developer sitting in your office daily, hire in-house. If the build needs a large team working in parallel for a year, a bigger vendor fits better. If you just want a one-page profile and can spend a weekend on it, a template builder may be enough, though you will not own the code.
Choose freelance when
The scope fits in weeks, not years; decisions are made by one or two people; you value direct contact and lower overheads.
Choose an agency or in-house when
You need many specialists at once, formal procurement, on-site presence, or a guaranteed bench of replacements.
Skills a good freelance web developer should show you
Skills matter less as a list of logos and more as proof you can check. Ask for live links, not screenshots, and open them on your own phone.
For a business website, look for solid HTML and CSS, responsive layouts, a modern framework such as Astro, Next.js or React where it makes sense, and comfort with WordPress if you want to edit content yourself. For anything with logins or payments, the developer needs back-end work in Node.js, Python or PHP, a database such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, and an understanding of security basics like input validation and HTTPS.
The skills people forget to check are the unglamorous ones: setting up DNS records without breaking email, configuring Google Search Console, writing redirects during a redesign, compressing images, and explaining choices in plain words. A freelance web developer who can explain why a page is slow is usually one who can fix it.
- Open two live sites they built on a mid-range Android phone and on mobile data
- Run one through PageSpeed Insights and ask them to explain the score
- Ask how they would hand over the code and logins
How do you choose a freelance web developer you can trust?
Choose on evidence, process and ownership terms, not on the lowest number. A short shortlist of two or three people you have spoken to is worth more than twenty marketplace profiles.
Start with the brief: what the site must do, rough page count, examples you like and your budget band. Send the same brief to each candidate so quotes are comparable. Then judge the replies. Did they ask questions, or just send a figure? Did they break the price into lines? Did they say who owns the domain and hosting?
A small paid first milestone, such as the home page design, is the safest test. You see how they communicate and deliver before committing the full budget.
- Live portfolio links you can open, not only images
- An itemised quote with pages, features and timeline
- Written statement that domain, hosting and code are yours
- Staged payments tied to things you can see
- A named person who replies within a working day
- A plan for what happens after launch and what it costs
Our longer version of this, with interview questions and a test task, is on how to hire a web developer.
How much does a freelance web developer cost for different projects?
Cost follows scope. A five-page brochure site and a 299-page SEO site both count as “a website”, but the effort differs by weeks. Here are our starting points so you can place your project.
A static website of up to 100 pages starts at ₹10,000 (US$150). An SEO website with 700+ generated pages starts at ₹20,000. An online store starts at ₹50,000, a custom web app at ₹60,000, and an Android plus iOS app at ₹40,000. Ongoing SEO starts at ₹10,000/mo, and maintenance, once the free two months end, starts at ₹8,000/mo.
Across the market, quotes for the same brief vary a lot. That spread comes from experience, whether design is custom or a bought theme, who writes content, and what support is included, not from the city the freelancer lives in. When you compare, line up the scope first and the price second. Detailed figures by type are on website making cost in India.
Why two quotes for the same website can differ so much
Two developers can read one brief and imagine two different sites. The gap in price almost always hides a gap in scope.
Design depth
A bought theme with your logo is quick. A layout designed for your customers, with custom sections per page, takes days more.
Content
If you supply final text and photos, cost drops. If the developer writes service pages, sources images and fixes grammar, that is real work and should be a line item.
Features
Booking calendars, calculators, member areas, multilingual pages and payment checkout each add build and testing time.
Integrations
Connecting a CRM, Google Sheets, WhatsApp or an accounting tool needs API work and error handling.
Aftercare
One quote may include months of fixes and backups; another stops at launch day. Ask what happens in month two.

How long does a freelance web developer take to build a website?
A static business site takes 1–2 weeks, an SEO website 3–5 weeks, an online store 4–8 weeks and a custom web app 6–12 weeks. The biggest delay is rarely coding; it is waiting for content, logo files and decisions.
Here is how the weeks usually break down on a static site. Days one and two: brief, sitemap and agreed quote. Days three to five: home page design on a staging link you can open on your phone. Week two: remaining pages, forms, speed work and a review round. Launch happens once you approve and the final payment clears.
You can speed things up by sending all text in one document, choosing one decision-maker, and replying to review links within a day. We share progress on WhatsApp with a staging link rather than long reports, so you always see the real site, not a description of it.
Who owns the website: you or the freelance web developer?
You should own everything, and it should be written down. That means the domain registered in your name and email, the hosting account in your name, and the source code in a repository you can access.
Problems start when a developer buys the domain “to save you time” and later disappears or holds it hostage for a renewal fee. We avoid this by creating accounts with you on a short call, or by asking you to create them and add us as a user. Payment for hosting and domain goes from your card to the provider, never through us.
At handover you should receive: repository access, an admin login, DNS details, a list of every paid service with renewal dates, and a short note on how to edit common content. If a freelance web developer is unwilling to hand these over, treat it as a warning, whatever the price.
Red flags when hiring a freelance web developer
Most bad website projects show warning signs in the first conversation. Walk away, or at least slow down, if you notice any of these.
- A single price with no breakdown and no written scope
- Full payment asked before any work is shown
- Promises of “page one on Google” or guaranteed rankings; nobody can guarantee rankings
- Domain or hosting bought in the developer’s name
- Portfolio that is only images, or links that no longer work
- No answer to “what happens if you are unavailable for two weeks?”
- Pirated or nulled themes and plugins, which often carry malware
- Reluctance to put the agreement in an email or document
A good freelance web developer will welcome these questions. Answers should be short, specific and written. If you get vague replies now, expect vague delivery later.
Which technology should a freelance web developer use for your site?
Choose the stack by who will edit the site and what it must do, not by trends. Here are the rules we apply.
Static site generator (Astro, Next.js static export)
Best for speed, security and low hosting cost. Ideal when content changes a few times a month and the developer handles edits.
WordPress
Good when your staff will post blogs or update pages daily. Needs updates and a light plugin list to stay fast and safe.
Headless CMS with a static front end
Editors get a simple dashboard; visitors get a fast site. Useful for content-heavy businesses.
Custom web app (Node.js, Python, PostgreSQL)
Needed for logins, bookings, dashboards or anything that stores user data and applies business rules.
Hosted store builder or custom store
Hosted builders launch quickly; custom stores give more control over checkout, GST invoices and integrations.

SEO and speed a freelance web developer should build in from day one
Search traffic depends as much on how the site is built as on the words on it. Fixing structure after launch costs more than doing it right the first time.
On every build we set a unique title and description per page, one clear H1, clean URLs, an XML sitemap, robots.txt, canonical tags and schema markup for the business, services and FAQs. We compress and size images, lazy-load what sits below the fold, and keep JavaScript small so Core Web Vitals pass on mid-range phones. Google Search Console is verified before launch so you can see indexing from week one.
What we will not do is promise positions. Rankings depend on competition, content and links built over months. For businesses that want steady growth, our freelance SEO work starts at ₹10,000/mo with monthly Search Console reports you can check yourself.
Building for Indian visitors: UPI, languages and budget phones
A site made for Indian customers has different priorities from one made for a US audience. Most visitors arrive on Android phones, many on patchy mobile data, and a large share prefer to finish the conversation on WhatsApp rather than a form.
So we design for a small screen first, keep page weight low, and add a click-to-chat WhatsApp button with a prefilled message. Where you sell online, checkout accepts UPI and cards. Where your customers read Hindi or a regional language, pages can be built in two languages with proper language tags so Google shows the right version. For GST-registered businesses selling online, invoices can carry GSTIN and tax lines.
We also test on older Android devices and slow connections, because a page that looks perfect on a new laptop can take ten seconds to open on a budget phone in a small town.
Beyond the website: apps, AI and SEO from the same freelance team
Many businesses start with a website and, a year later, need an app, a WhatsApp bot or better search visibility. Working with one small team for all of it saves re-explaining your business each time.
We build Android and iOS apps from ₹40,000 with Flutter or React Native and publish them through Play Console and App Store Connect in your accounts. We build AI tools from ₹40,000, such as bots that answer common questions or scripts that read invoices into a sheet. Custom portals and internal software start at ₹60,000.
What we do not take on: hardware, on-site IT support, or projects that need a large team working at once. We would rather tell you that on day one than stretch.
A worked example: a tuition centre’s website, start to finish
This is a hypothetical example, not a client story, to show how a freelance web developer project flows.
A tuition centre in a tier-2 city wants more enquiries for board exam batches. The brief: home, about, six course pages, faculty, results, fees, contact, and a Hindi version of the course pages. Budget: modest. Goal: parents send a WhatsApp message.
We would propose the static website plan, starting at ₹10,000, with a line added for the Hindi pages and one for writing course copy if the owner cannot. Week one covers the sitemap, a home page design on a staging link and course page layouts. Week two covers the remaining pages, the WhatsApp button with a prefilled “I want details for Class 10 batch” message, Google Business Profile link, schema for the organisation and FAQs, and Search Console setup. After launch, the free maintenance period covers new batch dates and fee changes for two months.
Freelance web developer services across India
Because all our work is remote, location changes little: the same process, prices and reply times apply everywhere. We meet on Google Meet or Zoom, share staging links, and take payment by UPI or bank transfer.
City pages explain local business context and examples: Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Noida and Gurgaon. If you would prefer someone you can meet in person, our freelance web developer near me page weighs nearby against remote honestly.
Clients outside India work with us the same way, billed in USD through Wise, bank wire or PayPal; see countries we work with.
Freelance web developer kaise chunein? Seedhi baat
Agar aapko website banwani hai, toh pehle yeh tay kijiye ki website se kya chahiye: calls, WhatsApp enquiries ya online orders. Phir do-teen developers ko wahi brief bhejiye aur har quote ko line by line compare kijiye.
Domain aur hosting hamesha apne naam par lijiye. Poora paisa advance mein mat dijiye; kaam dekh kar stages mein payment kijiye. Hamare yahan simple website ₹10,000 se shuru hoti hai aur 1–2 hafte mein live ho jaati hai. Launch ke baad 2 mahine ka maintenance free hai. Sawal ho toh WhatsApp par Hindi ya English mein poochiye.
