What should hotel website design in the UK actually achieve?
A hotel website has one commercial job: turn someone who already likes the look of your property into a direct booking before they drift off to compare prices elsewhere. Everything else (the story of the building, the chef's biography, the spa menu) supports that job or gets out of its way.
Guests arrive in three moods. Some have found you on an online travel agent and are checking whether booking direct is better. Some searched for a town and a type of stay. Some are returning and just want the booking button. Good hotel website design UK guests respond to serves all three quickly: a visible date picker, a short list of reasons to book direct, and room pages that answer questions before they become emails.
That means the design decisions are practical. Where does the booking button sit on a phone? How many taps from the home page to a price? Does the room page say whether the bath has a shower over it? Is breakfast included in the rate? Answer those well and the photography has room to shine.
Does my hotel website need to change booking engine?
Usually not. If SiteMinder, Guestline, eviivo or another engine already handles your rates, inventory and payments, the website's job is to hand guests to it cleanly. A redesign is the wrong moment to switch engines unless the current one is genuinely failing you.
There are three ways a hotel website connects to a booking engine. A link or button that opens the engine's hosted booking pages, often styled with your colours. An embedded widget that shows dates and availability inside your page. Or, for engines that publish an API, a custom booking flow designed from scratch. The first two are standard and quick; the third costs more and suits groups with specific needs.
We ask for the engine's integration guide, set up the booking link with the right parameters (dates, room type, promo code where supported), and make sure analytics follows the guest from your site into the engine so you can see which pages actually produce bookings. If you later swap engines, only the link changes; your hotel website design stays.
- Hosted booking pages: fastest set-up, least design control
- Embedded availability widget: guests see live dates without leaving the page
- API-driven flow: full control, higher cost, only where the engine supports it
What is rate parity, and how can a hotel still reward direct bookings?
Rate parity is a contract term, found in some online travel agent agreements, that restricts a hotel from publicly offering a lower room rate on its own website than on that agent's site. Whether it applies to you, and how, depends on the exact wording of your contracts, so read them or ask your solicitor.
Even where price is off the table, value usually is not. The common approach among independents is to match the room rate and add something the agents do not offer: breakfast included, free parking, a later checkout, a welcome drink, flexible cancellation, or first choice of room. Some hotels also run members-only or returning-guest rates behind an email sign-up, which may be treated differently from public rates. Again, check your own contracts.
On the website, those perks need to be impossible to miss. We put a short “Book direct and get…” strip beside every booking button, repeat it on room pages, and carry the promo code into the booking engine automatically where it supports that. A perk nobody notices is a perk you are paying for with no return.
Do hotel websites have to show all fees upfront in the UK?
Mandatory fees need to be in the price guests first see. According to the CMA, the consumer protection regime under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 came into force on 7 April 2025 and bans drip pricing, where fees are added as a shopper moves through a purchase. Compulsory service, resort or booking charges fall squarely into that territory.
The price displayed is set in your booking engine, so part of the fix sits there: make sure any compulsory charge is included in the rate rather than bolted on at the final step. On the hotel website, we check every place a price appears (offer pages, “from” prices on room cards, package pages) and make sure they match what the engine will charge. Optional items, such as breakfast upgrades, parking where it is truly optional, or dog fees for guests who bring one, can still be added when the guest chooses them.
The CMA's announcement notes fines of up to 10% of global turnover. We build the display; legal sign-off is for your own solicitor. Our DMCC Act compliance page explains the audit we run on checkouts.
How do hotels appear with a booking option in Google's hotel results?
Your rates reach Google's hotel results through Google Hotel Center, and Google recommends using a third-party integration partner to send prices and availability. For most independents, that partner is the booking engine or channel manager they already pay for.
So the first step is a question for your provider, not your web designer: do they connect your property to Google's hotel listings, and is the direct option switched on for you? If yes, your direct rate can sit beside the agents' rates when a traveller searches your hotel's name. Our part is the landing page: when a guest clicks through, the page must load fast, confirm the dates and price they expected, and hand them to the booking step without friction.
Separately, your Google Business Profile should carry accurate photos, amenities, a link to your website and the right category. We check it during the build and link it from the site. Honest note: we cannot switch on anything inside Google's travel products for you, and we will not promise placement there.
What makes a hotel room page convert on a phone?
A room page converts when a guest can picture the stay and see the price in under a minute. Lead with one strong photo, the bed size, how many it sleeps, the view, and a visible booking button. Put the detail underneath for the guests who want it.
The details guests search for are surprisingly specific: bath or shower (or both), room size, stairs versus lift, twin option, cot availability, dog-friendly or not, quiet side or street side, parking. Listing them in a consistent format across every room type reduces pre-booking emails and post-stay complaints alike.
Accessible rooms deserve their own honest description: door widths, bathroom layout, grab rails, the route from car park to room. Families booking for someone with a mobility need will leave a site that says “accessible” with no detail. We lay this out clearly and test the page with keyboard and screen-reader basics.
- Hero photo, bed type, occupancy and view above the fold
- Book-direct perks and booking button repeated beside the price
- A fact grid: size, bathroom, stairs or lift, cot, dogs, parking
- Accessible room details written out in full
- Photos of the actual room, not the best room in the building
Speed and imagery: why hotel websites feel slow on mobile
Hotel sites are often slow because of huge hero videos, uncompressed photo galleries and a stack of third-party scripts (booking widgets, chat, reviews, several tracking pixels). Each looks harmless alone; together they make a phone struggle.
We treat Core Web Vitals as a design constraint, not an afterthought. The first image is sized for the device and served in a modern format such as WebP or AVIF, the rest load as the guest scrolls, and video plays only when it genuinely adds something. Third-party scripts load after the page is usable, and advertising tags wait for cookie consent under the ICO's PECR guidance anyway.
The result is a hotel website that shows its best photo quickly on a train, in a café or on weak hotel Wi-Fi somewhere else. Google's own guidance on Core Web Vitals explains the three measures we test: loading, responsiveness and visual stability. We share the before-and-after numbers with you at launch.
Weddings, dining, meetings and gift vouchers on a hotel website
For many independents, rooms are only half the revenue. A hotel website design that treats the restaurant, weddings and gift vouchers as afterthoughts leaves money on the table.
Weddings pages work best with facts couples need to shortlist you: ceremony and reception capacities, whether you are licensed for ceremonies, exclusive-use options, sample menus and a clear enquiry form asking date, guest numbers and budget range. The same pattern suits meetings and private dining. Structured enquiries mean your events team replies with a useful answer the first time.
Gift vouchers are the quiet earner. Selling them on your own site, with card payment into your processor account and a unique code emailed or printed at home, avoids voucher-platform commission. Restaurant bookings can link to your table booking system, and our restaurant website guide covers menus, allergens and table booking in more depth.
Hotel website SEO: what actually brings UK searchers to an independent hotel?
Brand searches first, then specific local searches. Guests type your hotel's name more than anything else, so make sure your own site outranks the agents for it. After that, the realistic targets are specific: “dog friendly hotel in Ludlow”, “hotel with parking near York station”, “wedding venue Northumberland coast”.
The foundations we build: unique titles and descriptions per page, hotel structured data with address, amenities and check-in times, room and venue pages with real text, internal links between offers and rooms, fast pages and Google Search Console connected from day one. Area guides help when they answer genuine questions (“how to get here from the station”, “where to walk the dog”) rather than listing attractions every site repeats.
If the online travel agents outrank you for your own name, that is fixable with better on-site signals, an accurate Google Business Profile and patience. Nobody can promise rankings, and we will not. Ongoing work runs from US$150/mo a month, and our technical SEO audit is a sensible first step if your current site has lost ground.
Will ChatGPT and Google's AI answers mention my hotel?
They can only mention what they can find and trust. AI answers to “quiet hotel with a good restaurant near Bath” draw on pages that state location, facilities, dining and policies in clear sentences, plus consistent details elsewhere on the web.
We write each hotel page with a short factual summary at the top, question-style headings, and specifics rather than adjectives: “fourteen rooms, two dog-friendly, free parking for twelve cars, restaurant open to non-residents Wednesday to Sunday”. Consistency between your site, Google Business Profile and agent listings matters too; contradictions reduce confidence.
Nobody controls what AI tools recommend, so treat this as good housekeeping rather than a guaranteed channel. Our AI search optimisation guide describes how to check whether assistants are describing your hotel accurately.
How to measure direct bookings from your hotel website
Track the handover. Most hotel websites lose the guest's trail the moment they jump to the booking engine's domain, so reports show plenty of visits and no bookings. Cross-domain tracking in GA4, set up with your engine's instructions, fixes that.
Once it works, you can see which pages lead to bookings, which offers convert, and whether guests from Google, social or email behave differently. We also add simple events for weddings enquiries, voucher sales and restaurant bookings, so the non-room revenue is visible too.
Consent comes first: under ICO guidance, analytics and advertising cookies that are not strictly necessary need the visitor's agreement, so some visits will not be measured and your numbers will look lower than raw traffic. That is normal and honest. Our cookie banner setup keeps optional tags off until the guest opts in.
How to choose a hotel website designer in the UK
Choose someone who talks about bookings before colours. Ask how they would link your specific booking engine, how they will track direct revenue, and how quickly the site loads on a phone. A designer who cannot answer those three will produce a handsome brochure.
Useful vetting questions: who owns the domain, hosting and code at the end? What does it cost to leave? How do you handle a booking-engine change later? What happens if the site breaks on a bank holiday weekend? Can I edit rooms, offers and menus myself? Ask for an itemised quote rather than a single figure.
Remote or local? A local studio can walk the building and brief a photographer. A remote team, like ours, costs less to build and works through calls and shared documents. Both can produce an excellent hotel website; the right choice depends on whether you need someone on site. Our agency vs freelancer comparison sets out the trade-offs.
Red flags in hotel website design proposals
Be cautious if a proposal ties the website to one booking engine's platform, charges a per-booking fee for a website that simply links out, or cannot show real mobile speed results. These are the terms that hurt two years later.
Other warning signs: “unlimited revisions” with no written scope, a promise to get you to the top of Google, stock photography of rooms that are not yours, cookie banners that load tracking before consent, and a domain registered in the designer's name. Any one of these is enough to ask more questions before signing.
- Per-booking or percentage fees on a site that only links to your engine
- Domain, hosting or analytics owned by the designer
- Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed occupancy
- No plan to show mandatory fees in the headline price
- No cross-domain tracking into the booking engine
- A template you cannot move if you change booking engine
Hotel website design from a team in India: how it works day to day
You talk to the three people building your site, on WhatsApp and video, at times that suit a hotel's rhythm. India runs four and a half hours ahead of UK summer time and five and a half hours ahead in winter, so the overlap covers the UK day from late morning, after breakfast service and before evening check-in.
We work in English (and Hindi within the team), write every decision into a shared document and keep a preview link live throughout so you can check progress between guests. Quotes and invoices come from India in USD; you pay from a GBP account by Wise, bank wire or PayPal against milestones in the written quote, and nothing is billed before you approve it.
Your domain, hosting, analytics and code repository are in your name from the first day. We do not visit the property, run photoshoots or handle printed brochures. You send photos, room facts and brand files; we turn them into the site.
First week
Booking engine guide reviewed, room facts collected in a shared sheet, page list agreed, first homepage layout on a preview link.
Second week
Room and dining pages built, booking links tested with dates and promo codes, cross-domain tracking configured in test mode.
Worked example: a sixteen-room coaching inn in Shropshire (hypothetical)
Say an owner runs a sixteen-room coaching inn in a Shropshire market town, with a busy restaurant, a function room for small weddings and a booking engine they are happy with. Around half their room bookings arrive through online travel agents, and the current website is slow and hard to edit.
The plan: hotel website design on our starter site plan from US$150. Room pages for each of five room types, with a consistent fact grid and accessible-room details. A “Book direct” strip offering breakfast included and free late checkout, carried into the engine as a promo code. Dining pages linking to the table booking system, a weddings section with capacities and a structured enquiry form, and gift vouchers sold on site through the inn's own processor account.
Technical work: images resized and served in modern formats, third-party scripts deferred, GA4 cross-domain tracking into the booking engine, hotel structured data and Google Search Console. The inn's team edits offers and menus themselves after a recorded walkthrough. This is an illustration of a typical scope, not a past client.
