What makes up the Shopify website cost in the UK?
The Shopify website cost in the UK splits into one-off costs and running costs. One-off: the build, any paid theme, data migration and initial content. Running: the Shopify plan, app subscriptions, payment processing, your domain and any care plan.
Most confusion comes from mixing the two. A freelancer quotes the build; Shopify bills the plan; app developers bill through your Shopify invoice; the payment provider takes a slice of each order. None of them shows you the whole picture, so owners often discover the real monthly figure only after launch.
A useful habit is to keep a single spreadsheet with four columns: item, who charges it, how often, and whether it scales with sales. Card processing scales with revenue. Plan fees do not. Some apps charge by order volume, so they quietly grow with you. Once you see which lines grow and which stay flat, you can choose a plan tier and app stack with your eyes open.
- Build: design, theme set-up, product templates, collections, checkout settings. With us, from US$750.
- Shopify plan: Basic, Grow, Advanced or Plus, billed by Shopify.
- Theme: free, a one-off paid Theme Store purchase, or a custom build.
- Apps: recurring, usage-based or one-time charges, added to your Shopify bill.
- Payments: card rates per transaction, plus a third-party fee if you use another gateway.
Which Shopify plan should a UK business choose?
Start on the lowest plan that supports what you need today, and move up when the fee savings on higher tiers outweigh the extra monthly charge. For most new UK stores that means Basic or Grow.
Shopify's UK pricing page lists four main plans: Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. The differences that matter for cost are staff accounts, reporting depth and the payment rates. According to Shopify's UK pricing page, online card rates get lower as you move up the tiers, and the extra fee for using a third-party payment provider falls from 2% on Basic to 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.
That gives you a simple decision rule. Work out your monthly online turnover, multiply it by the rate difference between two plans, and compare the result with the difference in plan fees. If the saving is larger, the higher plan pays for itself. If it is smaller, stay put. We run this sum with you during scoping using your real or forecast order figures, not a guess.
Plus is a different conversation: it is aimed at high-volume and multi-store businesses, so check its terms with Shopify directly. A UK brand usually knows when it needs Plus because it has outgrown checkout customisation limits or needs several storefronts under one organisation.
How much are Shopify transaction fees in the UK?
If you use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges its card rate for your plan and no extra transaction fee. If you use a different payment provider, Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee on top of whatever that provider charges you.
Shopify's help centre is explicit that third-party transaction fees apply on all third-party and alternate gateways even when Shopify Payments is also switched on. There is one useful exception: with Shopify Payments activated, PayPal and manual payments are excluded from those fees. So a UK store can offer cards through Shopify Payments and PayPal alongside, without the extra percentage on the PayPal orders.
This is where a Shopify website cost in the UK can drift without anyone noticing. A store that switches off Shopify Payments to use another provider for a specific reason, perhaps a finance option or a trade account arrangement, pays two sets of fees on those orders. Sometimes that is the right call. It should be a decision, not an accident.
During the build we set up checkout so you can see exactly which methods are live and who is charging for each. We never pick a payment provider for you and we do not receive anything from any provider; the choice and the merchant account are yours.
Free theme, paid theme or custom theme: what does each cost?
A free Shopify theme costs nothing to buy, a paid Theme Store theme is a one-off purchase, and a fully custom theme is the most expensive because every template is built from scratch. For most UK stores a well-chosen theme, customised, gives the best value.
Shopify lets you try any Theme Store theme for free before you buy and publish it. Use that. Load your real products, your longest product title, your most awkward variant set and a collection with fifty items, then look at it on a phone. Themes that look perfect in the demo often fall apart with real data.
A custom theme earns its cost when your brand relies on an unusual layout, when you sell something that does not fit the standard product page (made-to-measure goods, bundles built step by step, trade and retail pricing on one product), or when the paid theme you like would need so many overrides that you are effectively rebuilding it.
Between those extremes sits the option we recommend most: a paid or free Online Store 2.0 theme with a handful of custom sections added. You keep theme updates and the drag-and-drop editor, and you get the brand-specific pieces you actually need. It usually keeps the Shopify website cost in the UK well below a full custom theme.
What does the monthly Shopify app stack really cost?
The app stack is often the biggest running cost after the plan itself, because each app looks cheap on its own. Reviews, upsells, wishlists, size charts, bundles, subscriptions, product options and SEO tools add up quickly.
Shopify bills apps in three ways, according to its help centre. Recurring charges are subscriptions billed every 30 days on your Shopify bill. Usage charges vary with how much you use the app and can appear across several billing cycles. One-time purchases are billed separately from your subscription. Uninstalling an app stops future cycles, but a charge already generated may still appear on the next invoice, and refunds are a matter between you and the app developer.
Three questions cut most app stacks down to size. Does the theme already do this? Could twenty lines of Liquid do it without a monthly fee? Is anyone actually using it? We have seen stores paying for two review apps because a previous developer switched without removing the first. We are not claiming any client case here; it is simply a common pattern worth checking in your own admin.
An app audit is part of our migration and rebuild work. You get a table of every app, what it costs, what it does and our recommendation to keep, replace with theme code, or remove.
Why do Shopify website quotes in the UK vary so much?
Shopify build quotes vary because suppliers are pricing different amounts of work: some set up a theme and upload products, others design every template, write copy, migrate data and integrate stock systems. The word “Shopify store” covers all of that.
The drivers we price separately are catalogue size and structure, number of custom sections, product data clean-up, integrations, migration, and content. A shop with 40 simple products and good photos is a very different job from 3,000 SKUs with inconsistent variants exported from an old platform.
Catalogue and variants
Clean, consistent product data imports in hours; messy data needs mapping and checking. Shopify's own migration guide warns that variants can fail to import if the source product lacks proper options.
Custom sections
Each bespoke block (a lookbook, a size finder, a comparison table) is designed, coded and made editable. Count them before comparing quotes.
Integrations
Stock, ERP, accounting or courier connections add logic and testing. Some have a ready app; some need custom code.
Content
Product descriptions, collection copy and policy pages take time. Supplying them yourself lowers the cost.
Ask any supplier, including us, to split the quote along these lines. If they will not, you cannot compare their Shopify website cost with anyone else's.
How much does it cost to migrate to Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento or Wix?
Migration cost depends on how much data you move and how many URLs you must redirect. Moving products alone is quick; moving customers, order history, blog posts and hundreds of redirects is a proper project.
Shopify's migration guide sets out the order: import products first, then customers, then historical orders, so that orders link to the right products and people. It lists products, customers, historical orders, gift cards and store credit, blogs and pages as data that can be brought across, and it offers a Store Migration app in the Shopify App Store alongside CSV imports and the API.
Redirects protect the search traffic your old store earned. In Shopify you create them under Content, then Menus, then URL redirects, and you can import them in bulk by CSV. Shopify's redirect documentation notes a limit of 100,000 redirects on standard plans and that a redirect only fires from a broken URL. We map every old product, category and page address to its new home and test a sample after launch.
Plan how existing customers will log in after the move, and tell them in advance. Our Magento to Shopify migration service covers the heaviest version of this job in more detail.
Shopify website cost UK over five years: how to model it
The honest way to judge a Shopify website cost in the UK is over the life of the store, not the launch month. Five years is a sensible window: long enough for plan fees and apps to add up, short enough that you will probably still be on the same platform.
Build the model in five lines. The one-off build and theme. Sixty months of plan fees. Sixty months of your app stack, including any that charge per order. Card and transaction fees as a percentage of forecast revenue. And maintenance or developer time for the changes you will want each year.
Then run it twice: once at today's sales, once at the sales you hope to reach. Plan fees stay flat as you grow, but payment fees and order-based apps grow with you. That is why the plan decision is revisited every year or so, and why a lean app stack matters more for a successful shop than a struggling one.
Compare the result with the alternative you are genuinely considering. WooCommerce swaps the plan fee for hosting, plugin licences and more maintenance. A WooCommerce developer for UK stores can price that side for you. Neither platform is cheaper for everyone; the answer depends on your catalogue, your team and how much you want to manage yourself.
What is included in a Shopify store build from US$750?
Our starting build is a complete, working store, not a theme install with your logo on it. Here is what the starting scope covers, and what moves you into a higher quote.
- A free or paid Theme Store theme set up and styled to your brand, tested on phones first.
- Home page, collection templates, product template, cart, about, contact and FAQ pages.
- Product and collection structure planned with you, and your supplied products imported.
- Shipping zones and rates for the UK and any overseas markets you sell to.
- Tax settings configured as you instruct, following your accountant's advice.
- Policy pages drafted from your terms for your adviser to check.
- Google Search Console and analytics connected, sitemap submitted, basic on-page SEO.
- A recorded walkthrough of your admin so your team can add products and run orders.
Custom sections, large migrations, subscriptions, B2B pricing, multi-currency markets and system integrations are priced as separate lines. If you are selling to trade customers as well, our B2B wholesale website page explains what that adds.
Hiring a Shopify team in India from the UK: how it works
You work with the three of us directly on WhatsApp and video calls, and the store is built in your own Shopify account from day one. India is four and a half hours ahead of the UK in summer and five and a half in winter, so our afternoons and evenings overlap with your UK business day from late morning onwards.
In practice that means you send feedback in your morning and see changes the same afternoon or first thing the next day. Calls usually happen between late morning and mid-afternoon UK time. We work in English (and Hindi), and every decision is confirmed in writing so nothing lives only in a call.
Quotes are in USD. You can pay from a GBP account by Wise, bank wire or PayPal; invoices come from India. Nothing is billed before you approve the written quote. For VAT or tax treatment of services bought from overseas, ask your accountant; we do not advise on that.
Week one
We agree scope, you create or share the Shopify store with staff access for us, and we set up the theme, navigation and product structure.
Week two
Product templates and collections take shape with your real data, and you review the first pages on your own phone.
Who should own the Shopify account, domain and apps?
You should. The Shopify store, the domain, the payment account and every app subscription should be in your business's name, paid by your card, with developers given staff or collaborator access that you can remove at any time.
When a developer creates the store in their own account and transfers it later, or buys apps on their card and rebills you, you lose visibility and control. If the relationship ends badly, getting your store back can be slow. It also hides part of your real Shopify website cost, because app fees arrive as a line on someone else's invoice.
We work the other way round. You hold the store owner role. We request access, build inside your store, and hand over nothing because there is nothing to hand over: it was yours throughout. If you move to another developer next year, you simply remove our access.
Does a Shopify store rank well on Google UK and in AI search?
Shopify gives you a sound technical base, but rankings come from the content, structure and speed you build on top. Nobody can honestly guarantee a position on Google, and anyone who does should worry you.
The things that make a difference on Shopify are collection pages with genuinely useful copy, product pages with unique descriptions rather than manufacturer text, clean internal links between related collections, structured data for products, and a theme that is not weighed down by apps injecting scripts on every page. Heavy app stacks are one of the most common reasons Shopify stores fail Core Web Vitals.
AI assistants and AI Overviews draw on pages that answer specific questions clearly. A size guide, a care guide or a delivery FAQ written in plain language is more likely to be quoted than a page of marketing copy. Our ecommerce SEO services for UK shops cover this ongoing work from US$150/mo a month, and the AI search optimisation page explains the newer side.
Red flags in a Shopify website cost quote
The warning signs in a Shopify website quote are usually about what is missing, not what is included. A low number that leaves out migration, redirects or app costs is not a low number.
- The developer will create the store in their own account “to save time”.
- Apps are bundled into a monthly fee paid to the developer instead of billed to you by Shopify.
- No mention of redirects when you are moving from another platform.
- A custom theme proposed before anyone has tried a Theme Store theme with your products.
- No written scope: “a full Shopify store” with no list of templates or pages.
- Talk of guaranteed rankings or guaranteed sales.
- No plan for who updates the theme and checks apps after launch.
None of these automatically means a bad supplier, but each deserves a direct question before you sign.
What does a Shopify store cost to run each month after launch?
After launch, a Shopify store's monthly cost is the plan fee, the apps, the payment fees on your sales, your domain renewal spread over the year, and any developer or care time. The plan and apps are predictable; fees and developer time move with your trading.
Care is where many owners save money by being honest about what they need. A store that changes rarely needs occasional theme updates, an app check and a quick look after Shopify releases new features. A store running weekly promotions, new collections and seasonal landing pages needs regular hands-on time.
With us, the first two months after launch are free: fixes, small edits and guidance while you settle in. After that, care starts at US$120/mo, and you can pause it when things are quiet. Our website maintenance cost guide for UK businesses explains how care tiers compare in general, not just on Shopify.
Worked example: pricing a Shopify store for a Bristol candle brand
This scenario is hypothetical, to show how a quote is built. Say a small candle and home-fragrance brand in Bristol sells 60 products, each in three sizes, mostly to UK customers, with a few orders to Ireland and the EU. It currently sells through a marketplace and an Instagram shop.
The build: a paid Theme Store theme, customised with two bespoke sections (a scent-finder quiz and a “refill your jar” block), collection pages by scent family and by room, product templates with size variants, UK and international shipping zones, gift cards, and policy pages for the owner's adviser to approve. That sits a little above our US$750 starting price because of the two custom sections.
The running side: the owner starts on Basic, uses Shopify Payments plus PayPal, and installs only a reviews app and an email marketing app. We model the move to Grow at the monthly turnover where lower card rates would cover the higher fee. After two free months, the owner chooses light care from US$120/mo in the busy pre-Christmas quarter only.
The point of the example: every line has an owner and a reason, and nothing recurring was added without a decision.
Shopify website cost UK checklist before you sign
Run through this before you accept any Shopify quote, from us or anyone else. It takes ten minutes and prevents most surprises.
- Which Shopify plan is recommended, and what order volume would justify moving up?
- Which payment methods will be live, and does any of them trigger a third-party fee?
- Theme: which one, free or paid, and was it tested with your real products?
- How many custom sections are included, and what exactly are they?
- Full app list with monthly cost and whether each is recurring, usage-based or one-off.
- Migration scope: products, customers, orders, blog, pages, and the redirect map.
- Who owns the store, domain, payment account and apps (it should be you).
- What is included after launch, for how long, and what care costs after that.
