Alappuzha: canals, coir and one of India's best-known backwater towns
Alappuzha grew as a port and trading town laid out along two parallel canals, the Vadai canal and the Commercial canal, which once carried goods from the harbour to warehouses. Lord Curzon's description of it as the “Venice of the East” has stuck, and the waterways now carry houseboats and tourist boats as much as cargo.
The town sits between the sea and the Vembanad backwaters. Its beach and lighthouse face the Arabian Sea, while Punnamada Lake and the canals lead into Kuttanad, the low-lying farm country known as Kerala's rice bowl, where paddy is grown below sea level.
Coir has been the town's defining industry since the nineteenth century. Mats, rugs, yarn, geotextiles and garden products are made in units of every size across the district, and the Coir Board's research institute and the International Coir Museum are at Kalavoor, just north of the town.
Alongside these sit fishing and prawn farming, the Government T.D. Medical College and a large network of hospitals, schools, temples, churches and shops that serve the district. For almost every one of these businesses, customers now look online first.
Houseboats and shikaras: taking more bookings directly
The kettuvallam houseboat is Alappuzha's best-known product. Operators range from single-boat owners to firms with large fleets, and most rely heavily on travel portals and agents who take a sizeable commission on each booking. Guests, meanwhile, struggle to judge which boat is which from near-identical listings.
A direct-booking website changes the balance. We build pages for each boat with real photographs, bedrooms and bathrooms, air-conditioning hours, meals included, the route you usually take, day-cruise and overnight options, and starting rates by season. A calendar shows availability, and guests can request a booking or pay an advance through UPI or Razorpay.
Clarity reduces disputes. We state what the starting rate includes, when air-conditioning runs, the check-in and check-out points at Punnamada or the Finishing Point, cancellation terms and any extra charges. Guests who read these before arriving complain far less and leave better reviews.
Shikara and motorboat operators need a lighter version: routes, durations, capacities, starting fares and a WhatsApp booking button. Many visitors decide on the same day, so speed of reply matters more than a long page.
Fleet owners with several boats can also use a simple internal calendar that crews and office staff share, so the same boat is never promised twice for one night. We build this as part of the booking system, and it works on an ordinary phone at the jetty.
- One page per boat with real photographs and starting rates
- Availability calendar and advance payment by UPI
- Clear inclusions, timings and cancellation terms
- Shikara and day-cruise pages with same-day WhatsApp booking
What a website costs in Alappuzha
Alappuzha businesses hear a wide range of prices, from small local designers to Kochi agencies selling annual marketing retainers, and tourism operators are often pitched expensive booking platforms with monthly fees. Our starting prices are published on the pricing page, and every quote is broken into items.
A static website of up to 100 pages starts at ₹10,000 and takes one to two weeks, enough for a shop, clinic, homestay or small coir unit. A 299+ page site designed for search starts at ₹20,000 and suits hotels, schools, hospitals and exporters with many products. Online stores start at ₹50,000, AI and WhatsApp automation at ₹40,000, and custom booking or production software at ₹60,000. Monthly SEO work starts at ₹10,000.
These are starting prices, not packages. The number of boats, rooms, products and languages changes the figure, and you approve the itemised quote in writing before any billing.
- ₹10,000 onwards: up to 100 pages, mobile layout, enquiry form, map and search basics.
- ₹20,000 onwards: 299+ pages for boats, rooms, products or services.
- ₹50,000 onwards: online store with UPI, cards, shipping zones and order alerts.
- ₹60,000 onwards: fleet booking, order tracking or appointment software.
Homestays, resorts and lake-side stays from Mararikulam to Kuttanad
Beyond houseboats, visitors stay in homestays in the town, beach resorts near Marari, about 11 km north, and lake-side properties along Vembanad and in Kuttanad. Many of these are family-run and depend on a few portals and word of mouth.
A website of your own lets you tell the story that portals cannot: the family who runs the place, the food, the canoe rides, the village walks, the distance to the beach or jetty. Guests who book directly often stay longer and return, and you keep the full payment.
We build room pages with honest photographs, starting tariffs, inclusions, house rules and directions from the railway station, KSRTC bus station and Kochi airport, plus a booking request that reaches you on WhatsApp. If you list on portals too, we keep your details consistent and avoid rate confusion.
Monsoon is an important season here, not only a quiet one. Many guests come specifically for rain-soaked backwaters and Ayurveda stays. A page that explains the monsoon experience honestly, including what is and is not possible when water levels rise, fills rooms that would otherwise stay empty.
Coir makers and exporters: catalogues buyers can trust
Alappuzha's coir units make doormats, rugs, runners, yarn, rope, geotextiles, grow bags and garden products, and much of it is exported. Buyers in Europe, North America and the Gulf, and large retailers within India, often find new suppliers through search and trade directories before they ever visit.
We build export-ready catalogues. Each product gets its own page with sizes, weights, weave or pattern, backing options, colours, packing details and minimum order quantity. A quote form collects the buyer's quantity, destination port and required certifications. Where you hold registrations, such as with the Coir Board or an export promotion council, we display them exactly as issued.
Photographs matter more than words. We send a simple guide to shooting mats and rugs flat in daylight with a scale reference, and short videos of weaving or tufting help show buyers you are a manufacturer and not a trading middleman.
For units selling retail, we add an online store for doormats, garden products and gift items, with UPI and card payments and shipping rules by weight. A small store with good photographs often surprises owners with how many orders come from Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi.
- Product pages with sizes, weights, packing and MOQ
- Export quote form with destination and certification fields
- Registrations shown exactly as issued
- Retail store for mats and garden products
Search in Malayalam, English and Manglish
Almost everyone in Alappuzha speaks Malayalam, but they search in several ways: Malayalam script, Malayalam typed in English letters (“Alappuzhayil nalla hotel”, “Mullakkal aduthulla textile shop”) and plain English. Tourists search almost entirely in English, often with the older name “Alleppey”, while domestic tourists from the north may use Hindi.
Your Google Business Profile does much of the work. We choose the right category, fix the map pin (important in a town where many businesses sit along canals and narrow roads), add true hours, closures during Onam and temple festivals, real photographs and a steady routine for honest reviews. Tourism businesses need replies to reviews in a calm, helpful tone.
On the website, we create pages for each service and area, using both “Alappuzha” and “Alleppey” where appropriate, and Malayalam versions where local customers need them. We also align your details on Justdial, TripAdvisor and other directories. Monthly SEO support starts at ₹10,000. We never guarantee a first-place ranking.
- Alappuzha and Alleppey both covered in page titles
- Malayalam pages for local customers
- Map pins checked for canal-side and lane addresses
- Consistent details on TripAdvisor, Justdial and directories
Boat race season, festivals and event-driven demand
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake draws huge crowds each August, and the snake-boat races and festivals around it fill hotels, boats and restaurants. Temple festivals at Mullakkal, Ambalappuzha and Chettikulangara and the Christmas and New Year season bring their own surges.
Businesses that plan pages for these dates in advance capture much of this demand. A page for race-day packages, viewing options, dates, starting prices and booking rules, published weeks ahead, gets found by visitors planning their trips. After the event, the same page can be updated for next year and keeps its search history.
Race day also brings a practical problem: roads close, parking fills and guests get lost. A short page with walking directions from the nearest bus stop or jetty, updated with official announcements, earns you goodwill and repeat visitors even from guests who only stop by for a meal.
We keep event information factual and point visitors to official sources for race tickets and timings. Restaurants, caterers, photographers, taxi operators and souvenir sellers can use similar seasonal pages to take advance orders and bookings.
Hospitals, clinics, Ayurveda centres and schools
The Government T.D. Medical College is the district's main public hospital, and private hospitals, clinics, dental chambers, diagnostic labs and Ayurveda treatment centres serve both residents and visitors. Kerala patients are well informed and often compare doctors and hospitals online before choosing.
We build pages with doctors, departments, OPD days, emergency contacts, directions and appointment requests that reach your front desk on WhatsApp. For Ayurveda centres, we describe treatments carefully, without cure claims, and list practitioners' qualifications as registered. Medical tourism visitors want clear packages with starting prices, durations and what is included.
Schools, colleges, tuition centres and entrance-coaching institutes need admission pages, fee information, timetables and notice boards that office staff can update. We publish only results that can be supported and have consent, which matters to Kerala parents who read closely.
Many families here have relatives working in the Gulf who help decide on schools and hospitals from abroad. English pages with clear fees, facilities and contact options let those relatives take part in the decision, and a WhatsApp number that answers promptly across time zones is valued far more than a glossy brochure.
Seafood, prawn farms and Kuttanad agriculture
Fishing and prawn farming are major parts of the district economy, and Kuttanad's paddy fields depend on a network of input dealers, machinery hire, pump operators and processors. These businesses mostly sell through established buyers, but a website helps when looking for new ones.
For seafood traders and processors, we build pages showing species, forms (fresh, frozen, dried), packing, FSSAI and export registrations where held, cold-chain arrangements and a quote form. Farm-input dealers and machinery hirers benefit from a simple Malayalam site listing brands, services, seasons and contact numbers, together with an accurate Google listing.
Local food producers, such as makers of pickles, dried fish, banana chips or spice blends, can sell directly with a small UPI store. We keep labelling and ingredient information accurate and ask for FSSAI details before listing food products.
Kuttanad's farm stays and paddy-field walks are a growing niche too. Farmers and families who host visitors can pair a simple booking page with honest descriptions of the seasons, from sowing to harvest, so guests arrive knowing what they will actually see.
WhatsApp automation for boats, stays and shops
During peak season, a houseboat operator may get dozens of WhatsApp messages a day, mostly asking the same things: price, availability on certain dates, what is included, where to board. Replying by hand while also managing crews and guests means some enquiries go unanswered, and those guests book elsewhere.
We build assistants that reply instantly with starting rates, inclusions, boarding points and a link to check availability, in English, Malayalam or Hindi. Every enquiry is saved to a sheet with dates, group size and phone number, and serious guests are passed to you for confirmation and payment. Complaints and anything involving money always go to a person.
Coir exporters can use a similar system for buyer enquiries in email and WhatsApp, and clinics and shops for routine questions. Projects start at ₹40,000. We first review a week of real messages and automate only what repeats. If WhatsApp Business quick replies are enough, we will say so.
No office in Alappuzha, and how our remote process works
We have no office in Alappuzha or anywhere in Kerala, and we will not claim one. We are three engineers working remotely for clients across India. You speak directly to the people building your site, without a sales layer.
One of us handles full-stack development. Another of us works on AI, machine learning, AWS and data. The third of us manages projects and builds automation and data-science tools. Start on our contact page; we reply on WhatsApp seven days a week during Indian hours, including the busy season when you are on the water.
After the first call, you receive a page plan, timeline and itemised quote in about two working days. After approval, a preview link lets you check the site on your phone and share it with partners. Our web development page explains the technical approach.
For houseboat and homestay projects, we ask for photographs and a short video walk-through of each boat or room, which lets us write accurate descriptions without a site visit. We send clear shot lists so the material you gather on a phone is enough.
Ownership, portability and support after launch
Tourism businesses in particular get caught by platforms and developers who keep control of the domain, the booking data or the listing. When the relationship ends, years of reviews and search history can go with it.
We register the domain and hosting in your name. At launch you receive all passwords, the full source code and a note explaining the setup. Booking and enquiry data belong to you and can be exported at any time. You can move to another developer whenever you like, with no exit fee.
For two months after launch, maintenance is free: updates to rates and photographs, fixes, security patches, backups and uptime checks. After that, you can continue from ₹8,000 a month or contact us only when something needs changing and pay per task. Many tourism clients find it useful to plan a pre-season update each year before the winter rush.
