Online dukan kaise khole? Pehle yeh tay kijiye ki kis raaste se
Online dukan kholne ke chaar raaste hain, aur sahi raasta aapke products, customers aur samay par nirbhar hai. Galat raasta chunne se paisa bhi jaata hai aur himmat bhi.
Khud se teen sawal poochiye. Pehla: aapke customer kahan hain, isi mohalle aur shehar mein, ya poore India mein? Doosra: aapke paas kitne products hain, 30 ya 3,000? Teesra: roz kitna samay de sakte hain orders, packing aur messages ke liye?
- WhatsApp Business catalogue: local customers, kam products, free shuruaat. Kirana, bakery, sweet shop, boutique ke liye badhiya pehla kadam.
- Marketplace (Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho jaise): poore India ke buyers turant, par har sale par commission aur unke niyam.
- ONDC network: sarkari pahal se bana open network, jahan ek seller app ke zariye kai buyer apps par dikh sakte hain.
- Apna online store: apna brand, apne customers ka data, apne daam. Traffic khud laana padta hai.
Zyadatar chhoti dukanon ke liye samajhdari yeh hai ki WhatsApp se shuru karein, dekhein ki kitne orders aate hain, aur jab haath se sambhalna mushkil ho jaaye tab apna store banwayein. Neeche har raaste ka detail hai.
WhatsApp Business se online dukan kaise khole: free pehla kadam
WhatsApp Business app free hai aur usme catalogue feature se aap products ki photo, daam aur description daal sakte hain. Customer catalogue dekh kar seedha chat mein order bhejta hai. Local dukan ke liye yeh sabse jaldi shuruaat hai.
Kaise shuru karein: WhatsApp Business app install kijiye, dukan ka naam, pata, timing aur category bhariye. Phir catalogue mein 20–30 sabse zyada bikne wale products daliye, saaf photo aur sahi daam ke saath. Apne purane customers ko ek message bhejiye ki ab catalogue se order kar sakte hain, aur dukan par QR code laga dijiye.
Payment ke liye UPI QR ya UPI ID kaafi hai. Delivery aap khud ya apne ladke se karwa sakte hain, ya customer aakar le jaaye.
Kamiyan bhi samajhiye. Har order haath se confirm karna padta hai, stock khatam hone par catalogue khud update nahi hota, aur 50–100 orders roz aane lagein toh chat mein orders kho jaate hain. Google par aapki dukan search karne wala naya customer catalogue nahi dekh paata. Jab yeh dikkatein aane lagein, toh WhatsApp ordering system ya apna store agla kadam hai. Hum website se aane wale orders ko WhatsApp par automatic confirm karne ka system ₹40,000 se banate hain.
Selling on a marketplace: quick reach, less control
A marketplace such as Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho puts your products in front of buyers across India from day one. In return you follow their rules, pay their fees on each sale and compete with other sellers on the same product page.
To register as a seller you generally need a PAN, a bank account in the business name, product details and, in most cases, a GST registration (see the GST section below for the exception that now exists). The marketplace handles the checkout and payment collection and settles money to your bank after deducting its fees and the tax it is required to collect at source.
What works well on marketplaces: products people already search for by name, such as branded goods, standard kitchenware or popular clothing categories. What struggles: products that need explanation or trust, like handmade items, or goods with thin margins where fees and returns eat the profit.
The biggest trade-off is the customer relationship. On a marketplace, the buyer is the marketplace’s customer, and you usually cannot build a direct relationship or repeat-order channel. That is why many sellers use a marketplace for discovery and their own store or WhatsApp for repeat buyers. We do not manage marketplace seller accounts, but we build the store and WhatsApp side that sits beside them.
What is ONDC, and can a small shop sell on it?
ONDC, the Open Network for Digital Commerce, is an initiative of the Government of India’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). It is not a single shopping app; it is a network where a seller listed through one seller app can be discovered by buyers using different buyer apps.
For a shopkeeper, this means you do not register on ONDC directly. You join through a seller app, sometimes offered by a bank, a logistics firm or a software provider, and that app puts your catalogue on the network. Each seller app sets its own fees and features, so compare two or three before choosing.
ONDC suits shops that already have clean product data (names, photos, prices, stock) and can handle orders quickly, especially in groceries, food and daily needs within a city. It is less useful if your catalogue is messy or you cannot confirm orders within minutes.
Where we fit: we do not run seller apps on the network, but a well-organised product catalogue in your own store or spreadsheet makes joining a seller app much easier. If you later want your own store and ONDC listings to share the same stock, that connection depends on what the seller app offers, and we can check it for you before quoting.
Your own online store: when it is worth building
Your own store makes sense when you have repeat customers, a recognisable shop name, or products that sell better with your own photos and story. It gives you the customer list, the pricing freedom and the brand, and you pay for the build once rather than a cut of every sale.
A store we build includes categories and filters, product pages with several photos, a cart, UPI and card checkout through a payment gateway account opened in your business name, cash on delivery with limits you set, order emails and WhatsApp alerts, and an admin panel where you add products, change prices and mark orders as shipped. It starts from ₹50,000 and takes 4–8 weeks.
The trade-off is traffic. A new store does not come with buyers. You bring them through your existing customers, your Google Business Profile, WhatsApp broadcasts to people who opted in, Instagram, and search engine visibility built over months. Stores that succeed usually start with customers the shop already has.
A practical rule: if at least a few customers already order from you by phone or WhatsApp every week, your own store will pay for itself faster than if you are starting from zero. Read ecommerce website kaise banaye for the build steps, and website for shop if you only need a catalogue for now.
Online dukan kholne ka kharcha: every route, side by side
Each route shifts the cost to a different place. WhatsApp is free to start but costs your time. Marketplaces cost a share of every sale. Your own store costs a one-time build plus small running bills.
WhatsApp Business catalogue
The app is free. Your costs are your time, a phone that stays with the shop, and delivery. It becomes expensive only in hidden ways, such as missed orders and messages answered late at night.
Marketplace
No build cost, but every sale carries the marketplace’s commission and fees, shipping charges, and the cost of returns. Read the current fee schedule on the seller portal before listing, because it varies by category.
ONDC through a seller app
Each seller app sets its own charges. Compare what each takes per order, whether delivery is arranged, and how quickly money is settled.
Your own store
The build starts from ₹50,000. Then domain and hosting renewals in your name, the payment gateway’s charge on each online payment, and courier charges. With us, the first 2 months of maintenance are free, then from ₹8,000/mo if you want it.
The table below compares all four routes on the same questions. For a line-by-line store budget, see ecommerce website cost in India.
Online dukan mein UPI, card aur COD payment kaise le?
Chhoti dukan UPI QR se shuru kar sakti hai; apne store par UPI aur card lene ke liye payment gateway account chahiye jo aapke business ke naam par khulta hai. Cash on delivery bhi rakh sakte hain, lekin soch-samajh kar.
UPI QR ya UPI ID sabse aasaan hai, aur WhatsApp orders ke liye kaafi hai. Dikkat bas yeh hai ki payment aur order ka milaan haath se karna padta hai: kisne kitna bheja, kis order ke liye.
Apne store par gateway lagane se customer checkout par hi UPI app, card ya net banking se pay karta hai, aur order apne aap “paid” ho jaata hai. Gateway ki KYC ke liye aam taur par PAN, bank account aur business proof maange jaate hain, aur approval mein kuch working din lagte hain. Gateway har online payment par apna charge kaat-ta hai; yeh alag-alag providers mein alag hota hai.
COD se bikri badhti hai, khaaskar naye customers mein, par order cancel aur return bhi badhte hain. Hum store mein COD ki seema rakh sakte hain, jaise ek tay amount se upar COD band, ya sirf purane customers ke liye COD, ya kuch pin codes tak seemit. Poora tareeka website me payment gateway kaise lagaye par hai.
Delivery kaise karein: khud, local rider, courier ya pickup?
Delivery ka tareeka aapke customers ki doori se tay hota hai: shehar ke andar khud ya local rider, shehar ke bahar courier, aur bahut paas walon ke liye dukan se pickup.
Shehar ke andar: kirana, bakery, dawai aur sabzi jaisi cheezon ke liye apna delivery boy ya local delivery service sabse sahi hai.
Customer ka samay bachta hai, aapka delivery kharcha zero.
Ek baat pehle se likh dijiye: delivery charge kitna, kitne din mein, aur kharab ya galat saamaan aane par kya hoga. Yeh policy store par saaf dikhni chahiye, aur isse jhagde kam hote hain.
Do you need GST to sell online? GST basics for shopkeepers
It depends on the route. If you sell only through your own website or WhatsApp, deliver goods only within your own state and stay below your state’s registration threshold, GST registration is generally not required just because you sell online. Shipping goods to buyers in another state changes that, because the CGST Act lists inter-state taxable supply among the cases that need compulsory registration, with limited exceptions such as certain handicraft goods. Selling through marketplaces has also required registration, with an important exception now available.
The CGST Act makes registration compulsory for people who supply goods through an e-commerce operator that must collect tax at source. However, CBIC Notification No. 34/2023–Central Tax, in force from 1 October 2023, exempts small suppliers of goods from that compulsory registration when they meet conditions: they make no inter-state supplies, they sell through the operator within only one state, they have a PAN, their aggregate turnover stays below the state’s registration threshold, and they obtain an enrolment number on the GST portal before selling.
In practice this means a small shop selling only within its own state through a marketplace may be able to start without GST registration, but the moment it wants to ship to buyers in other states, registration comes back into the picture.
We are developers, not tax advisers, so confirm your own case with a chartered accountant before you register on any marketplace. On our side, if you are registered, we set up the store to issue GST invoices automatically, with your GSTIN, HSN codes and tax rates on each product as your accountant specifies.
What must an online dukan show buyers? Consumer rules in plain words
The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 expect online sellers to be transparent: show the total price with its breakup such as delivery charges and taxes, state the terms of return, exchange and refund, give delivery and shipping details, and name a grievance contact who responds to complaints within the timelines set by the rules.
For a small shop, this translates into a few pages and fields that every store we build carries:
- A clear price on every product, with delivery charges shown before payment, not after.
- A return, exchange and refund policy written in simple language you actually follow.
- A shipping page explaining delivery areas and typical delivery times.
- Your legal business name, address, email and customer care number.
- A named person for complaints, with a way to reach them.
- Country of origin for imported goods, and expiry dates where products have them.
You decide the actual policies; we build the pages and product fields so the information appears where buyers expect it. For legal wording, especially on returns and refunds, ask your own lawyer or CA to review it.
Product photos, prices and descriptions: the part only you can do
A developer can build the store in weeks, but filling it with good product information is the shopkeeper’s job, and it decides whether people buy. Plan for it from the first day.
Photos first. Use daylight near a window, a plain background such as a white sheet, and the same angle for similar products. Three photos per product (front, detail, in use) are better than one glamorous shot. A phone with a clean lens is enough for most kirana, hardware and home goods; for jewellery, sarees or anything that sells on looks, a local photographer for a day is money well spent.
Descriptions second. Write what a buyer asks at the counter: size, weight, material, how to use, what is in the box. Short, factual lines work better than long praise. Hindi and English both work; if you want both, we build the store bilingual and you supply or approve the text.
Prices and stock third. Decide whether online prices match the shop counter. Keep stock updated, because nothing annoys an online buyer more than paying for something that is not available. Our admin panel lets you mark items out of stock in seconds, and we can import your product list from an Excel sheet to save typing.
Start with your best 30–50 products, launch, and add more every week. A small, well-described store beats a large, empty-looking one.
When should a shopkeeper get a custom online store built?
Get a custom store built when a ready-made route starts blocking your sales: orders getting lost on WhatsApp, marketplace fees eating your margin, or buyers asking for something the templates cannot do.
Signs it is time: you get repeat orders every week from the same customers; you want your own prices and offers without matching a marketplace; you sell something with options (sizes, weights, custom text, gift wrapping) that simple catalogues handle badly; you need delivery slots or area rules; you want orders to flow into your billing or accounts; or you want customer data to stay with you.
Signs it is not yet time: you have fewer than a handful of online orders a week, your product list changes daily and you have no time to update it, or you have not yet tested whether people will buy online at all. In those cases, stay on WhatsApp or a marketplace a little longer.
When you do build, start with the essentials and add features as orders grow. Our stores start from ₹50,000; extras such as courier automation, loyalty points or a companion Android app are separate lines you can add later. If an app is on your mind, read app banane me kitna kharcha aata hai first.
How will customers find your online dukan?
Mostly through channels you already control: your shop counter, your WhatsApp contacts, your Google Business Profile and Google search. A new store gets very few visitors on its own, so plan the first hundred customers before launch.
Start with the people who already know you. Print a QR code at the counter and on bills that opens your store. Tell regular customers on WhatsApp, but only those who have agreed to receive your messages. Add the store link to your Google Business Profile so people searching your shop name or “near me” land on it; if your shop is not on Maps yet, follow Google Map par dukan kaise dale.
Then search. Each product and category page in our stores gets its own title, description and structured data so Google and AI search tools can understand what you sell, where you deliver and at what price. Clear, specific pages are also what AI answer engines tend to quote. Nobody can guarantee rankings, and search takes months, so treat it as a slow, compounding channel.
If you want ongoing help with Google visibility for your area, monthly SEO starts from ₹10,000/mo, and our local SEO packages page explains what a shop-level plan should include.
Worked example: a hypothetical kirana and dry-fruit shop in Bhopal
Say a family-run kirana and dry-fruit shop in Bhopal already takes phone orders from about 40 regular households and wants to go online without losing its personal touch.
Stage one, week one: WhatsApp Business with a catalogue of the 30 most-ordered items, a UPI QR on every bill, and a note to regulars. Cost: time only. After a month, the owner sees that phone and chat orders are growing but getting mixed up.
Stage two: an online store from ₹50,000, built in about six weeks. It has categories (atta and rice, dals, oils, dry fruits, festival gift packs), delivery slots for three nearby areas set by pin code, UPI and card checkout, COD only for existing customers, and an order alert on the owner’s WhatsApp. Staff mark orders packed and delivered from the admin panel. The shop delivers locally with its own rider; dry-fruit gift packs go by courier to other cities before Diwali.
GST: the shop is already registered, so the store prints GST invoices with the rates its CA specified. It does not sell through a marketplace, so the marketplace registration question never comes up; its CA handles the filings as before.
What was left out on purpose: a mobile app, loyalty points and a delivery tracking map. They can come later if repeat orders justify them.
Nayi online dukan mein hone wali aam galtiyaan
Zyadatar online dukanein technology ki wajah se nahi, chhoti-chhoti aadaton ki wajah se fail hoti hain. Yeh galtiyaan pehle se jaan lijiye.
- Domain aur gateway kisi aur ke naam par: store aapka lagta hai par asli control kisi aur ka.
- Stock update nahi karna: customer pay kare aur saamaan na ho, toh woh wapas nahi aata.
- Delivery charge checkout par achanak: aakhri step par naya charge dekh kar log cart chhod dete hain.
- Return policy na likhna: pehle jhagde par dono taraf nuksaan.
- Dhundhli photos: online customer chhoo nahi sakta; photo hi uski aankh hai.
- Messages ka der se jawab: online customer minuton mein jawab chahta hai.
- Sab products ek saath daalne ka intezaar: launch mahino tak ruk jaata hai.
Yeh sab store ke design aur aapki routine dono se theek hota hai. Hum launch ke waqt ek chhoti daily checklist dete hain: orders dekhna, stock update, messages ka jawab aur dispatch.
Online dukan kaise khole: across India, from kirana to handloom
The steps are the same everywhere, and so are our starting prices, because we work remotely over WhatsApp, calls and preview links. What changes from city to city is what shops sell and how far they ship.
Chikankari and garment sellers in Lucknow and knitwear units in Tiruppur ship across India and need size charts and courier setup. Brassware makers in Moradabad and handicraft sellers in Jodhpur sell on photos and story, which suits their own store. Silk weavers in Bhagalpur and handloom sellers in Kannur and Imphal often begin with WhatsApp catalogues for repeat buyers. Kirana and daily-needs shops in Patna and Rajkot focus on local delivery slots and UPI.
Wherever you are, you send your product list on WhatsApp, get a line-by-line quote in about two working days, see the store on a preview link on your own phone, and launch with the domain, gateway and data in your name. We do not visit shops; photos and details come from you, and we guide you on what to shoot.
