What does a website designer in Mumbai actually do?
A website designer decides how your business looks and reads on a screen: which pages exist, what goes at the top of each one, how text, photos and buttons are arranged, which colours and fonts carry the brand, and how all of it behaves on a narrow phone. Good design is mostly about order. A visitor should understand who you are within a few seconds and know exactly where to tap.
The usual outputs are a sitemap, rough wireframes, a style sheet of colours, type and buttons, and finished mockups for the main page types. On our projects these mockups are not the end product. The same team builds them, so the design is checked against real text and real phones before anyone calls it done.
In Mumbai the stakes are visual. A jewellery buyer judges a firm by its close-ups, a production house by its showreel, a café by one photo of its best dish, and an advisory firm by whether the site feels calm and serious. A website designer in Mumbai has to read those expectations and design for them, rather than drop your logo into a theme that also serves a plumber in another city.
Website designer vs website developer: which do you need?
You need both skills, and you need them talking to each other. The designer decides what the site should look like and how it should guide people; the developer makes it work, quickly and securely, on every device. When the two are different people who never speak, the classic Mumbai story follows: a beautiful PDF mockup, a developer who “adjusts” it, and a live site that looks nothing like what you approved.
The BtechWaleTech team does both. The full-stack developer builds the layouts, the AI, cloud and SEO engineer keeps images, fonts and scripts light enough for fast loading, and the project lead runs the design reviews and keeps every decision in writing. Because the people who design are the people who code, nothing gets lost in a handover.
When would you hire only a designer? If you already have a trusted developer or an in-house tech person, a design-only freelancer can make sense. When would you hire only a developer? If a brand designer has already produced complete page designs in Figma; we can build those faithfully. For most small and mid-sized Mumbai businesses, one team covering design and build is simpler, faster and cheaper. The table further down splits the tasks so you can see who normally does what, and our freelance web designer guide covers design-only hires in more depth.
Designing for Mumbai audiences: who is judging your website?
Mumbai's mix of trades means there is no single “Mumbai style”. Design starts from the buyer. Finance and advisory firms around Fort, Nariman Point and BKC sell trust, so restraint wins: generous white space, a serious typeface, real team photos and no flashing banners. Wholesale traders around Crawford Market and Kalbadevi need density done well, with product codes, ranges and prices easy to scan.
Media and entertainment, concentrated in Andheri, Goregaon and Lower Parel, expects visuals first: video that starts quickly, dark or neutral backgrounds that flatter footage, and credits laid out like a film poster rather than a résumé. Jewellers in Zaveri Bazaar and diamond firms near the Bharat Diamond Bourse depend on photography and zoom. Textile sellers in Mangaldas Market and Dadar need colour accuracy above all. Pharma firms need clarity, product lists and contact routes for distributors. Restaurants need appetite.
The city also hands designers a visual vocabulary. The Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles around the Oval Maidan and Marine Drive were added to UNESCO's World Heritage list on 30 June 2018, and the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival has filled the streets of South Mumbai every February since 1999. A brand can borrow from that heritage, an Art Deco geometric border or a Gothic serif for headings, as long as it serves the buyer rather than the designer's taste.
How much does a website designer in Mumbai charge?
With us, design is part of the build. A business website designed and developed starts at ₹10,000 (about US$150), an online store at ₹50,000, an SEO site of 299+ pages at ₹20,000 and a portal interface at ₹60,000. Quotes from other Mumbai designers vary widely because “design” can mean anything from tweaking a theme to building a brand system from scratch.
These factors decide where your design quote lands:
- Unique layouts: a site with three page types costs less to design than one with twelve
- Custom graphics: illustrations, icon sets and animated sections take extra time
- Photo work: cropping, colour correction and background clean-up of supplied photos
- Language versions: each script needs its own type settings and checks
- Review rounds: the number agreed in your written quote
What it does not include: logo creation, product photography on location and printed material. If you need a new logo, a brand designer should create it first and we design the website around their files. For typical totals by business type, from a clinic to a restaurant, see the website development cost in Mumbai page.
How a website designer in Mumbai runs reviews over screen-share and staging
Design reviews happen on a screen-share call, where you see the layout while we change it, followed by a staging link you can open on your own phone. Nobody has to drive to Lower Parel for a presentation.
1. Brief and references
On the first call you show us two or three sites you like and tell us what you dislike about your current one. We note the buyer, the one action each page must drive, and any brand rules.
2. Wireframe
A plain grey layout of the home page, shared on screen. It fixes the order of sections before colours distract anyone.
3. Style tile
Colours, two typefaces, buttons and a photo treatment on one sheet. You approve the mood before we style full pages.
4. Designed pages on staging
The home page and one inner page are built as real, working pages on a staging link, not flat images, so you judge them on your phone with your own content.
5. Feedback and refinement
Send annotated screenshots or voice notes on WhatsApp, or ask for another screen-share. Every change requested is listed back to you in writing.
Once the main templates are approved, the remaining pages follow quickly because they reuse the same parts. A business website usually completes in one to two weeks after content arrives. The review checklist table further down shows what to look for at each stage.
Tools follow the job. Wireframes and style tiles are prepared in Figma; finished pages are built as code, on Astro or HTML for brand and portfolio sites, a custom WordPress theme when your staff will edit (see our freelance WordPress developer guide), a customised Shopify theme for stores, and Next.js for portal interfaces. We avoid heavy page builders unless your team truly needs one.
Visual identity on the web: colour, type and the logo you already have
We build the web identity from your existing logo and colours rather than inventing a new brand. Most logos were designed for print, so they need translating: a palette that works on screens, a text colour with enough contrast to read in sunlight, and button colours that stand out without shouting.
Type does most of the work. We usually pair one typeface for headings with a highly readable one for body text, both from open-licence libraries such as Google Fonts, so you never face licence bills later. Sizes are set for phones first: body text large enough to read on a moving local train, headings short enough not to wrap into four lines.
Icons, photo filters, corner shapes and spacing get written into a simple style guide. It sounds minor, but this is what makes page forty look like page one, and what lets your staff or a future developer add pages without the site drifting.
If your logo is a low-resolution image from years ago, we can redraw a clean version of the same mark for web use. A genuinely new logo or brand system is a job for a brand designer; we are happy to work from their guidelines.
Photography for a Mumbai website: what to shoot and who shoots it
Photos decide whether a design feels real or generic. Stock pictures of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link or a skyline at dusk tell visitors nothing about your business. Your own shop, team, products and work do.
We do not visit premises, so photography is either yours or a local photographer's. For most business sites a recent phone is enough if you follow a short guide we send:
- Shoot near a window in daylight; avoid tube lights and mixed colour casts
- Clean the frame: remove clutter, cables and stacked boxes
- Take each product on a plain background, then one shot in use
- For team photos, use the same background and height for everyone
- Shoot horizontal for page banners and vertical for phone screens
- During the monsoon, plan indoor shots or wait for a bright dry morning
Jewellery, fashion and food usually justify a professional photographer, because sparkle, fabric colour and texture are hard to capture on a phone. Share their files with us and we crop, colour-correct, compress and arrange them across the layout, with descriptive alt text for search and accessibility. Jewellers can find more detail in our jewellery website design guide.
Mobile-first design checklist: thumbs, WhatsApp and UPI
In Mumbai your site is mostly seen on a phone held in one hand, often on a crowded train or in a lift with one bar of signal. We design the phone layout first and the desktop version second. Whoever you hire as your website designer in Mumbai, every design should pass this checklist:
- Main buttons within reach of the thumb, and a sticky WhatsApp or call button that never covers content
- Body text at a comfortable size, with headings short enough to read at a glance
- Tap targets large enough for a finger, with space between them
- Images sized for phones, so a page stays light on mobile data
- Forms with as few fields as possible and the right keyboard for numbers and email
- UPI and card payment screens styled to match the site, for stores and bookings
- No pop-ups that block the page on arrival
- A layout that still works on a budget Android phone, not just the latest iPhone
Speed is part of design. Heavy sliders and auto-playing videos look impressive in a meeting room and frustrate a real visitor. We test the designed pages against Core Web Vitals before launch and trim whatever slows them down. The engineering side of speed and hosting is covered on our website developer in Mumbai page.
Designing Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati pages that read well
Indic scripts need their own design decisions, not just translated text dropped into an English layout. Devanagari, used for Hindi and Marathi, has a headline bar and stacked conjuncts that need more line height; Gujarati has no headline bar and looks smaller at the same size. A good layout adjusts spacing and sizes for each script so both feel equally important.
Our team writes English and Hindi, so Hindi pages can be drafted with you. Marathi and Gujarati text must come from you or your translator, who also approves it; we take care of the design and engineering: Unicode text rather than images, families such as Noto Sans Devanagari, Mukta, Hind or Tiro Devanagari Marathi, and Noto Sans Gujarati or Hind Vadodara for Gujarati, each tested on low-cost phones.
Mixed-script layouts need care too. An English brand name inside a Marathi heading should sit on the same visual baseline, and numbers, prices and phone digits should stay in a consistent style. The language switcher goes where people expect it, top right on desktop and inside the menu on phones, and each language gets its own URLs so search engines index both.
Should you add a language at all? A Dadar clinic serving older patients probably should; a design studio pitching to brands probably should not. We discuss that before designing a single page.
Design that Google and AI answers can read
A beautiful site that search engines cannot read is a brochure locked in a drawer. Design choices affect visibility more than most owners expect, so we design with search in mind from the first wireframe.
That means real text instead of words baked into images, one clear H1 per page and a logical heading order, descriptive alt text on photos, menus that are links rather than scripts, and pages light enough to pass Core Web Vitals. Google's own Search Central documentation describes these basics, and they apply to a designer's site as much as a developer's.
For local searches, design consistency matters too. Your name, address, phone and opening hours should appear in the same form on the site and on your Google Business Profile, and the locality, whether Bandra, Andheri or Fort, should be stated in plain words. We add LocalBusiness schema so search engines and AI assistants can quote those details accurately.
AI tools such as ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews prefer pages with clear, specific statements. A short paragraph that says what you do, for whom and where in Mumbai is easier to quote than a clever slogan. Design should give those statements room, not hide them under animation. If you want ongoing work, monthly SEO starts at ₹10,000/mo.
How do I choose a website designer in Mumbai?
Judge a designer by live websites, not by mockups in a portfolio. Mockups never have long product names, poor photos or a client's last-minute paragraph; live sites do. Before hiring a website designer in Mumbai, run through these checks:
- Open three live sites they designed on your phone. Are they readable, fast and easy to tap through?
- Ask whether the same person or team also built them, or whether a separate developer did
- Look for range: do all their sites look the same, or does each fit its business?
- Ask how reviews work and how many rounds the quote includes
- Confirm you receive the design file, fonts list and image set at the end
- Ask how they handle Hindi, Marathi or Gujarati text if you need it
- Check whether design and build are priced together or as two separate jobs

Files a website designer in Mumbai should hand over to you
You should walk away with everything needed to keep the design alive without us. Design work that exists only on a freelancer's laptop is a risk, because the next person who edits your site will guess colours and spacing and slowly break the look.
At handover you receive:
- The Figma file with wireframes, style tile and main page designs
- A one-page style guide: colours with codes, fonts, button styles and spacing rules
- The edited image set in web sizes, plus the originals you supplied
- The live code in a repository you own, or a full WordPress backup
- Admin logins for domain, hosting and site, with renewal dates listed
- A recorded walkthrough of editing pages without breaking the layout
Fonts from open-licence libraries need no licence transfer. If you supply paid fonts or stock images, the licences stay in your name. The domain, hosting and code are registered to you from the start, so there is nothing to “release” at the end.
Red flags when hiring a website designer in Mumbai, and common design mistakes
The same problems turn up again and again when Mumbai owners ask us to review their current site. Watch for them in your own site and in any design you are shown:
- Home page sliders that rotate five messages, none of which anyone reads
- Menus, price lists or brochures uploaded as PDFs or images instead of text
- Pale grey text on white that disappears in sunlight
- Stock skyline photos where your own shop, team or products should be
- Auto-playing video with sound, or video files too heavy for mobile data
- Different phone numbers on the site, the Business Profile and Instagram
- A designer who shows only desktop mockups and never mentions phones
- A quote that says “premium design” but lists no pages or rounds
Most of these cost nothing to avoid if they are caught at the wireframe stage. That is why we review structure before colours, and real pages on a phone before launch.
Worked example: a post-production studio in Andheri West
This is a hypothetical scenario to show how a design project runs, not a client story. Say a small post-production studio in Andheri West handles editing and colour grading for ad films and web series. Its current site is a single page with an embedded video that takes ages to load on a phone, and producers mostly find the studio through word of mouth.
On the first call we would agree the design's job: show the quality of the work in the first five seconds, make credits easy to scan, and give a producer an obvious way to send a brief. The style tile would use a dark neutral background that flatters footage, one sharp sans-serif for headings and a highly readable body face.
Each project page would open with a short, compressed preview clip that starts quickly, followed by the full film hosted on a video platform and loaded only when tapped. Credits would be laid out in tidy columns, and a brief form would ask only for format, deadline and budget range.
The quote would start at ₹10,000, with video preparation listed as a separate line. Reviews would happen on two screen-share calls and the staging link. After launch, during the two free maintenance months, we would add new projects as they wrapped, without anyone travelling to the studio.
After launch: free maintenance and keeping the design consistent
Every site includes two months of maintenance free after launch. For a designed site that means fixes, small text and image swaps, festival or sale banners in the agreed style, tested updates and backups.
From the third month, optional care starts at ₹8,000/mo. It keeps the design consistent as the site grows: new pages built from the existing templates, new photos edited to match, and periodic checks that nothing has crept in that slows the pages down. You can also run edits yourself using the style guide and training video, or hand the site to any designer you like.
Brands with seasonal moments, a Diwali collection, a monsoon menu or a film release, benefit from planning banners a few weeks ahead so nothing is rushed on the day. The website maintenance freelancer guide explains what regular care includes.
Website design across the Mumbai region and beyond
Hiring a website designer in Mumbai does not limit you to the city: remote design reviews work the same whether you are in Colaba or Kalyan. Businesses in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar get the same process, starting prices and handover as those in South Mumbai. For broader build questions in those cities, see website developer in Thane and website developer in Navi Mumbai.
If your brand also has a presence in Pune, our website designer in Pune page covers that city's design briefs, and the Mumbai IT services page lists apps, software and automation work in the city. When you are ready to budget, the Mumbai cost guide walks through sample totals.
