What is Laravel, and why do businesses hire a freelance Laravel developer?
Laravel is an open-source PHP framework for building web applications. It gives a developer ready-made answers to the boring, risky parts of an app: routing, database access through Eloquent, authentication, queues, scheduled tasks, email, file storage and testing. That means more of your budget goes into the features that make your business different.
Businesses hire a freelance Laravel developer for three common reasons. They need a custom app that spreadsheets and off-the-shelf tools cannot handle, such as a dealer portal with price lists per region. They already run a Laravel app and the original developer has moved on. Or their app is stuck on an old version and needs an upgrade before a security issue forces one.
PHP runs on almost any server in India, hosting is inexpensive, and Laravel has a large community, so the code you commission is easy for another developer to pick up later. That last point matters more than most people realise when they hire.
When Laravel is the right choice, and when it is not
A freelance Laravel developer will usually recommend Laravel when your app is mostly forms, records, rules and reports, used by logged-in people with different permissions. That describes most portals, CRMs, ERPs for small firms, booking back offices and B2B SaaS tools.
Look elsewhere in a few cases. If you need a marketing website that loads instantly and rarely changes, a static site is cheaper and faster. If the core of the product is live collaboration or streaming data to thousands of connected clients at once, Node.js may suit better, though Laravel Reverb now covers many real-time needs. If your team only knows Python and plans heavy machine learning, Django keeps everything in one language.
Strong fit
Multi-role portals, subscription SaaS, admin-heavy apps, APIs for mobile apps, internal workflow tools, invoicing and inventory systems.
Weak fit
Pure content sites, landing pages for ads, apps that are mostly real-time streams, or projects where the in-house team works only in another language.
Comparing with Python? Our Django developer page covers the same questions from that side.
Skills to check before you hire a freelance Laravel developer
Anyone can install Laravel in five minutes, so a CV alone tells you little about a freelance Laravel developer. What you are hiring is judgement about data, security and maintainability. Ask to see code, not only screenshots, and ask the developer to talk you through one decision they made.
- Eloquent relationships and eager loading, so list pages do not fire hundreds of queries
- Form requests and policies for validation and permissions, not checks scattered in controllers
- Queues and jobs for slow work such as emails, PDFs and third-party calls
- Migrations and seeders that rebuild the database cleanly on any machine
- Automated tests with Pest or PHPUnit around the money and permission logic
- Safe handling of uploads, secrets in environment files and HTTPS everywhere
- Deployment by pipeline rather than copying files over FTP
- Comfort reading someone else's old Laravel code without wanting to rewrite all of it
The last point is underrated. A good freelance Laravel developer improves an existing codebase gradually and only proposes a rewrite when the numbers justify it.
How much does a freelance Laravel developer charge for different jobs?
A freelance Laravel developer prices work by what the app must do. Framework choice rarely changes the price much; scope does.
With us, a custom Laravel app starts at ₹60,000 (US$900). A simple portal with two roles, a handful of forms and basic reports sits near that starting point. A multi-tenant SaaS with subscriptions, team management, usage limits and an API sits well above it. If you also need a marketing site, a static one starts at ₹10,000; an Android and iOS app on top of your Laravel API starts at ₹40,000.
Rates across the wider freelance market vary widely. The difference usually comes from testing discipline, experience with upgrades, whether the developer handles deployment and security, and what support follows launch. Ask each candidate to list exactly what is and is not included, then compare like with like.
Laravel version upgrades: why they matter and how we run them
Laravel ships a new major version roughly once a year and gives each release 18 months of bug fixes and 2 years of security fixes. According to the official support table, Laravel 10 stopped receiving security fixes in February 2025 and Laravel 11 in March 2026; Laravel 12 is covered for security until February 2027. An app on an older version still runs, but new vulnerabilities in the framework or its PHP version will not be patched.
As a freelance Laravel developer team, our upgrade method is deliberately boring. First a paid audit: current version, PHP version, package list with abandoned ones flagged, custom code that overrides framework behaviour, and test coverage. Then we add a thin layer of tests around the critical paths, such as login, checkout and invoices, before touching anything. We move one major version at a time, run the tests, fix breakages, and deploy each step to staging for you to check.
Most of the effort lands on third-party packages, not Laravel itself. An abandoned admin or PDF package may need replacing, and that is where surprises live, which is why the audit comes before the quote.
- Audit the codebase and server, then quote
- Add tests around business-critical flows
- Upgrade PHP and Laravel one major version per step
- Replace abandoned packages with maintained ones
- Staging review, then production deploy with a rollback plan
Building a SaaS product with a freelance Laravel developer
Laravel is a practical base for a SaaS first version because authentication, teams, queues, notifications and billing hooks all have well-trodden patterns. The danger is not the framework; it is scope. Founders often want every feature of an established competitor in version one.
We start by agreeing the one job the product must do well for its first paying customers. Then we decide the tenancy model early: a shared database with a tenant column suits most early SaaS products and is simpler to run; separate databases per tenant make sense when clients demand strict data isolation. Changing this later is expensive, so it is settled in week one.
Subscriptions in India need UPI and card payments, GST-compliant invoices and handling for failed renewals. We integrate a payment provider of your choice through its API and keep the billing logic behind tested service classes. For a broader view of early product scope, see our MVP development guide.
Laravel APIs for mobile apps and integrations
Many Laravel projects are really APIs: a mobile app, a partner system or a website front end talks to Laravel, which holds the data and the rules. Done well, one Laravel API serves your Flutter app, your admin panel and your integrations from the same source of truth.
We use Sanctum for token authentication in most mobile cases, API resources to keep response shapes stable, versioned routes so an old app version does not break when you release a new one, and rate limiting on public endpoints. Webhooks from payment or courier providers go onto queues so a slow third party never blocks your users.
Documentation is part of the deliverable. You receive an OpenAPI description of the endpoints, so another developer, or your own team, can build against the API without reading the code first.
Admin panels: Filament, Nova or custom?
Most business apps spend more screens on administration than on anything customers see. Choosing the right admin approach saves weeks.
Filament
Free and open source, built on Livewire. Ideal for data-heavy back offices with tables, filters, forms, charts and exports. Our default for internal tools.
Laravel Nova
A paid first-party admin package. Sensible when a team already knows it or needs its specific resource style.
Custom admin with Inertia and Vue or React
Worth it when admins need unusual workflows, drag-and-drop planning or a very specific interface that generic panels fight against.
For many Indian SMEs, a Filament panel plus a few custom screens is the cheapest way to replace a tangle of spreadsheets. We will say so if a custom admin is not worth your money.
Taking over an existing Laravel app from another developer
Inheriting code is common, and bringing in a fresh freelance Laravel developer is nothing to be embarrassed about. The first job is to understand what you have before changing it.
We ask for repository access, a copy of the production environment settings with secrets removed, a database dump with personal data masked, and server details. Within a few days you get a written health report: Laravel and PHP versions, outdated packages, security concerns, obvious performance issues, missing backups and the riskiest parts of the code. Then you decide what to fix first.
If the previous developer kept the code only on their laptop or on the live server with no version control, recovery starts by pulling the live files into a repository you own. That single step protects you from repeating the problem.
- Repository or server access, owned by you
- Environment settings with passwords redacted
- Masked database copy for local testing
- List of scheduled tasks and queues in use
- Any documentation, however rough
Any freelance Laravel developer should know that the framework protects against common attacks by default, including CSRF, SQL injection through its query builder and escaped output in Blade. Problems appear when those defaults are bypassed, secrets leak, or debug mode is left on in production.
On every project we switch debug off in production, store secrets only in environment files outside the repository, validate every input with form requests, authorise every action with policies, rate-limit logins and APIs, and log errors to a place you can see. Backups run daily to storage in your cloud account, and restoring one is tested before launch.
For speed, we eager-load relationships, add database indexes where queries need them, cache configuration and routes, push slow work to queues run by Horizon, and use Redis for cache and sessions when traffic justifies it. Another of us handles AWS setup where you want it, so your app runs in your own account with sensible cost limits.
Laravel apps for Indian businesses: GST, UPI, WhatsApp and Hindi
Apps built for Indian users need a few things that generic tutorials skip, and a freelance Laravel developer from outside India might miss them. Invoices usually need GSTIN, HSN or SAC codes and correct tax lines. Payments must accept UPI alongside cards. Customers expect updates on WhatsApp more than email, and many staff use the app on budget Android phones.
Laravel handles all of this well. Its localisation system serves Hindi or regional language strings without separate code. Notifications can go out over WhatsApp through an approved Business API provider, as well as email and SMS. PDF invoices generate on a queue so the screen stays quick. We design admin screens to work on a phone for owners who run the business from one.
If WhatsApp is central to your workflow, our WhatsApp automation page explains templates, opt-in rules and costs in detail.
How a freelance Laravel developer project runs, week by week
A first version of a Laravel app typically takes 6–12 weeks. The shape is the same whatever the product.
Week one is discovery: user roles, main screens, data model sketch and integrations, turned into a written scope. Weeks two and three set up the repository in your account, the database schema, authentication, roles and the admin panel skeleton, deployed to a staging server. The middle weeks deliver features in small batches, each one on staging for you to test, with tests around the business rules. The last stretch covers integrations, reports, data import, performance checks and a production deploy with backups verified.
You review on staging every week, not at the end. That is how problems with a screen or a rule surface when they are cheap to fix. The third of us keeps the plan and the decision log so nothing agreed on a call gets lost.
Who owns the Laravel code, server and data?
You do, in writing, from day one. The Git repository sits in your GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket account, with us added as collaborators. The server, database and storage live in your hosting or AWS account. Domain and business email stay in your name.
This protects you from the most common Laravel horror story we hear about: a developer who deployed straight to a server they control and then stopped replying. With ownership set up properly, anyone competent can continue the work.
At handover you receive the repository, a README explaining setup and deployment, the environment variable list with where each secret lives, the scheduled tasks and queues in use, backup locations and a short walkthrough call.
Example: a dealer portal for a pump manufacturer
This is a hypothetical example to show how a Laravel project could be scoped; it is not a client story.
A pump manufacturer sells through about 200 dealers who currently order by phone and WhatsApp. The owner wants dealers to log in, see their own price list, place orders, download GST invoices and track dispatch. Staff need an admin panel to approve orders and upload price changes from Excel.
A freelance Laravel developer, in this case our team, would scope three roles (dealer, sales staff, admin), a Filament admin panel, price lists per dealer tier, order workflow with approval, invoice PDFs generated on a queue, Excel import for prices, and WhatsApp notifications on dispatch. The first version, without a mobile app, fits the custom web app plan starting at ₹60,000, in roughly eight to ten weeks. A dealer app on top of the same API could follow later, starting at ₹40,000.
Freelance Laravel developer services across India
Laravel projects run entirely online, so the process and prices are identical wherever you are. We meet on Google Meet or Zoom, review on staging servers and take payment by UPI or bank transfer.
City pages describe local business needs: Bengaluru, Pune, Mohali, Rajkot, Vijayawada, Aurangabad, Mangaluru, Gwalior, Meerut and Tiruppur. Overseas teams can read how we work with clients in other countries, billed in USD.
