What does a Shopify developer in Surat do that the admin can’t?
Shopify’s admin is friendly, but a good store needs decisions and code the admin does not make for you. A Shopify developer turns a generic theme into a store that fits your products, connects the Indian services you need and keeps the app list from swallowing your margins.
For Surat brands the work usually covers structure, theme code, payments, shipping and launch. Structure means deciding how products, variants, collections and filters are organised, which matters a lot when you sell a saree in six colours or a kurti in five sizes. Theme code means adding fabric details, size charts, video and trust badges directly in Liquid, Shopify’s template language, instead of renting an app for each. Payments, shipping and taxes need Indian settings that a default store does not have.
It is equally useful to know what a Shopify developer should not do: lock your store into their own account, install a dozen apps “just in case”, or promise sales. The BtechWaleTech team works through Shopify’s collaborator access on a store owned by you, so the relationship can end without a migration.
For founders comparing hires, our page on how to hire a Shopify developer lists the skills worth checking.
Why Shopify suits so many Surat brands
Surat produces enormous volumes of fabric and finished ethnic wear, and a growing number of family businesses and young founders want a retail brand on top of that production. Shopify fits that ambition because it is quick to launch, reliable during sale weekends and simple for a small team to run.
The typical Surat Shopify brand looks like this: designs sourced from the city’s weaving and processing belt, photography done in a small studio, orders coming from Instagram and Google, and parcels leaving from a home, shop or small godown. The same model works for jewellery makers, including those selling lab-grown stones in a city whose diamond trade now has the Surat Diamond Bourse, inaugurated on 17 December 2023.
Buyers are spread across India and abroad. Many are Gujarati families in other states or overseas who trust Surat as a source; many more are shoppers who have never heard of the city and judge only the store. Both groups expect fast pages, clear sizing and easy UPI payment.
Shopify is not perfect for every Surat seller. Wholesalers who sell catalogue sets to retailers on credit often outgrow it. For them, our saree wholesaler website guide covers better options.
How much does a Shopify developer in Surat charge?
Our full Shopify store setup starts at ₹50,000 (about US$750). That covers a configured theme, product and collection structure, payment provider, shipping and tax settings, policies, essential apps and launch.
Three costs sit outside our quote and are paid by you directly: Shopify’s subscription for the plan you pick, any paid apps, and the payment provider’s per-transaction charges. Read Shopify’s own pricing page for your plan’s current terms, including any fees that apply when a third-party payment provider is used, before you decide.
Inside our quote, four things move the price. Product volume and variant depth: loading 60 products is not the same as 1,500 with photos for every colour. Theme work: small edits in the theme editor are quick, while new sections, custom product templates or a bespoke theme take longer. Content: writing product titles, descriptions and collection introductions is real work and gets its own line. Integrations: a courier app, a GST invoice app, WhatsApp messaging or an accounting connection each need setup and testing.
National ranges are on Shopify store cost in India, and city-wide budgets are on website development cost in Surat.
How do Indian payments work on a Shopify store in Surat?
Through a third-party payment provider. Shopify’s help centre lists the countries where Shopify Payments is available, and India is not among them, so Indian stores connect an external provider that Shopify supports.
You choose the provider and sign its agreement in your business name; settlements reach your current account. We then connect it in Shopify, test UPI, card and net-banking payments with small real amounts, and make sure failed or cancelled payments leave orders in the right state. Shopify’s supported-countries page is worth reading if you want to see the official list.
Cash on delivery needs extra thought. It brings first-time buyers but also returned parcels that cost you shipping both ways. We can limit COD by order value, by pin code or to repeat customers, and add an order confirmation step on WhatsApp before dispatch where your setup allows.
For brands selling to buyers outside India, multi-currency display and international shipping can be configured, but the payment provider must support those payments. We check that before promising anything.
Shipping from Surat with Shopify: zones, rates and couriers
Shipping is set up through shipping profiles and zones in Shopify, then connected to a courier or courier-aggregator account so parcels can be booked without retyping addresses.
We start with your real costs. How much does a typical parcel weigh? Do you offer free shipping above a cart value? Do lehengas or bridal pieces need a different rate because of weight or insurance? From that we build profiles and zones, for example Surat and the rest of Gujarat, the rest of India and remote pin codes.
- Weight on every product and variant, so rates calculate correctly
- Free-shipping threshold, if your margins allow one
- COD limits and a COD fee, if you want to discourage returns
- Courier app linked to your own courier account for labels and tracking
- Order status notifications by email and, where set up, WhatsApp
- A clear returns and exchange policy page, linked from every product
International orders, often from Gujarati families abroad, need customs-ready product descriptions and an honest delivery estimate. We set those up only if you plan to ship overseas.
Which Shopify theme should a Surat fashion or jewellery brand use?
Start with a well-supported theme that already handles large image galleries and variant swatches, then customise its code rather than stacking apps on top. The theme decides your store’s speed far more than any optimisation app.
Shopify’s free themes
Fast, maintained by Shopify and good enough for many new brands. With custom sections for fabric, size and care details, they look far from generic.
A paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store
Worth it when you need features such as mega menus, lookbooks or advanced filtering out of the box. Buy the licence on your own store.
A custom theme
For established brands with a strong visual identity or unusual product pages, such as made-to-measure blouses. More expensive, but nothing is wasted.
Whichever route you take, we customise in a duplicate theme, preview it with you on a call and publish only after approval. Our national guide on Shopify theme customization shows typical edits and when they are worth paying for.
Which Shopify apps does a Surat store really need?
Fewer than most stores install. Every app adds a monthly bill, and many add scripts that slow every page. We aim for a short list where each app solves a problem the theme and Shopify itself cannot.
A common starting set for a Surat brand: a courier or shipping app tied to your account; a GST invoice app configured to the format your CA approves; a reviews app if you have real reviews to show; a WhatsApp app if your messaging setup needs it; and a translation tool if you want a Gujarati storefront. Wholesale pricing, subscriptions or product bundles may need one more app each.
Things we usually build into the theme instead of buying an app: size charts, fabric and care tables, trust badges, announcement bars, simple product tabs and countdown banners for a festive sale.
Before adding any app we check what it loads on the storefront, whether it leaves code behind when removed, and whether its developer still updates it. If you already have a long app list, an app audit is often the cheapest way to make the store faster.
Taxes and GST invoices on Shopify for a Surat business
Shopify can charge tax at checkout, and an invoice app can produce GST-ready invoices for every order. What rates apply, whether your prices include tax and what the invoice must show are decisions for your chartered accountant; we configure the store to match their instructions.
In practice we set your business address in Gujarat as the store’s origin, add tax settings as your CA specifies, store each product’s HSN code in a product field, and configure the invoice app to print your GSTIN, the buyer’s details and the tax split. If business buyers want to enter their own GSTIN, we add that to checkout or the order form where Shopify’s plan allows.
We also set up a monthly export of orders, taxes and refunds that your accountant can work from. The official background is on the GST portal, but your CA’s instructions are the ones the store follows. We do not offer tax advice.
A Gujarati storefront on Shopify
Shopify supports selling in more than one language, with each language on its own URL path. We can set up a Gujarati version of your storefront alongside English or Hindi; you or your translator supply or approve the Gujarati text, since the BtechWaleTech team writes in English and Hindi only.
The work on our side includes enabling the language, adding a switcher to the header, loading a Gujarati-friendly web font such as Mukta Vaani or Noto Sans Gujarati in only the weights you use, translating theme strings like “Add to cart”, and checking that product templates with long Gujarati words don’t break on small screens.
Product titles are the tricky part. Many Surat brands keep fabric and design names in English because buyers search that way, and translate the description, size guide and policies. That is a sensible compromise that keeps translation work manageable as new collections arrive.

Shopify SEO and speed for searches that mention Surat
Shopify handles the technical basics well, but the content and speed work is yours to do. Nobody can guarantee rankings, and a new store usually takes months to earn steady search traffic.
On launch we write unique titles and meta descriptions for collections and key products, add introduction text to collection pages, set image alt text, and check that Shopify’s product schema shows price and availability correctly. We also make sure duplicate product URLs created by collections point search engines to one canonical address.
Speed is mostly about apps and images. We compress and resize photos, lazy-load galleries below the first screen and remove app scripts that load on pages where they are not used. Testing happens on a phone profile, since most buyers of Surat fashion shop on mobile.
If shoppers search with your city, a Google Business Profile for your studio or shop, consistent with the store’s contact page, helps. For ongoing work, monthly SEO starts at ₹10,000/mo; our Shopify speed optimization guide covers the technical side.
How long does a Shopify developer in Surat take to launch a store?
Most brand stores take 4–6 weeks from approved scope to launch; very small stores can be faster, and migrations or heavy theme work slower. Here is the order the BtechWaleTech team follows, all done remotely:
- Video call: products, pricing, shipping habits, payment preferences and three stores you admire
- Itemised quote in about two working days
- You create the Shopify store and accounts in your name; we request collaborator access
- Theme chosen, duplicated and customised; first product and collection templates shared for review
- Products loaded from your spreadsheet; payments, shipping, taxes and apps configured
- Test orders on real phones with real small payments, a combined change list, then launch
The fastest launches have one decision-maker and a clean product sheet. Photos arriving in batches is the most common reason a date slips.
How to vet a Shopify developer, and what should worry you
Look at live stores, ask about apps and check who will own the store. A capable Shopify developer in Surat will show working stores you can buy from, explain why they used each app and insist the store is in your name.
Open two stores they built on your phone, add products to cart and go to checkout. Ask how they would handle your variant structure and COD problems. Ask which theme sections they wrote themselves.
- Worry if the store will be created on the developer’s account and “transferred later”
- Worry if the quote is a single number with no product count or task list
- Worry if the answer to every request is “install an app”
- Worry if they promise sales figures or first-page rankings
- Worry if there is no test-order step before launch
- Relax if they ask about your returns rate, margins and shipping weights

Store ownership, collaborator access and handover
The Shopify store owner account should be yours from the first day, created with your business email and paid with your card. That single decision protects you more than any contract clause.
We work through Shopify’s collaborator access, which you approve and can revoke whenever you choose. Staff accounts for your team are created with only the permissions they need, so a packing assistant cannot change prices or delete products. The payment provider, courier account, domain and every paid app are also registered to you.
At handover you receive a list of every app with its monthly charge and purpose, a document covering payments, shipping, taxes and policies settings, and short screen recordings for daily tasks: adding a product, creating a discount, processing a return and exporting orders for your accountant. If you ever change developers, nothing has to be moved; you just invite someone else.
Contract questions such as payment stages are set out in your written quote, and general terms are on our terms page.
A worked example: a kurti label from a home studio in Pal
This is a hypothetical scenario showing how a Shopify project might run. It is not a client and has no results attached.
Picture two sisters in Pal who design kurtis, have them stitched by a unit in Udhna and sell through Instagram messages. They have about 120 designs, each in five sizes, and they are tired of answering “price?” in DMs and chasing UPI screenshots.
On a video call we agree a Shopify store on a free theme with custom sections for fabric, fit and wash care, a size chart built into the theme, and filters for fabric, colour and occasion. Payments run through a provider they sign up with; COD is allowed only up to a set order value. A courier app is linked to their aggregator account, and dispatch updates go out by email and WhatsApp.
The quote starts at ₹50,000, with separate lines for loading 600 variants and writing collection introductions. They write the Gujarati versions of the home page and policies themselves. Two months of free maintenance cover the first new collection upload and small theme tweaks, after which they decide whether optional care makes sense.
After launch, and Shopify stores across south Gujarat
Shopify updates itself, but your theme, apps and settings still need care: app conflicts after updates, new collection templates, festive banners and occasional speed checks. Every store we launch gets two months of free maintenance, then optional care from ₹8,000/mo. Details sit on website maintenance in Surat.
We work remotely, so the same service reaches brands in Navsari, Valsad and Vapi, food and gifting makers in Bardoli, and sellers further away. State-wide Shopify notes are on Shopify developer in Gujarat.
If Shopify turns out not to suit your model, for example because you mainly sell wholesale on credit, we will say so and point you to custom web applications in Surat or a WooCommerce build instead.
