How is the Shopify website cost in India made up?
Think of the Shopify website cost in India as three separate meters: a one-time build, fixed monthly bills, and a per-order meter that runs faster as you sell more. Budgets go wrong when owners plan for the first meter only.
The one-time layer is the build: theme setup, product upload, payment and shipping configuration, legal pages, maybe custom sections. The monthly layer is your Shopify plan plus app subscriptions. The per-order layer is payment processing: your payment provider's fee and, in India, Shopify's own third-party transaction fee on top.
The interesting part is how these trade off. A cheaper plan carries a higher per-order fee. A free app may slow your store and cost sales. A one-time custom build can remove three monthly subscriptions. The rest of this guide puts real percentages on each lever so you can see which one matters for your size of store.
- One-time: build and setup, premium theme purchase, custom sections
- Monthly: Shopify plan, apps, optional SEO and upkeep
- Per order: provider fee on each online payment, Shopify's third-party fee, courier charges
- Yearly: domain renewal
Shopify plans and the Shopify website cost in India: what each tier changes
Shopify's India pricing page lists four plans, Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, priced in rupees and billed monthly or yearly. The plan decides your staff accounts, reporting depth and, most importantly for Indian stores, the transaction fee Shopify adds when you use a third-party payment provider.
This page does not print plan prices because Shopify changes them and runs launch offers (at the time of writing, a short free trial followed by a heavily discounted first few months). Check the live figures on Shopify's India pricing page before you budget. What stays stable is the structure: from Basic to Grow to Advanced, each step costs roughly four times the one below it, Plus sits far above all three, and every step lowers the per-order fee.
Staff accounts are a quiet deciding factor. Shopify lists up to 5 staff accounts on Grow and up to 15 on Advanced. If three people pack orders and one person handles customer service, each wanting their own login, that alone can push you off Basic.
Basic
Right for new stores and small catalogues. Highest third-party fee (2%).
Grow
More staff accounts and reports, third-party fee drops to 1%.
Advanced
Custom reports, more staff, third-party fee 0.6%.
Plus
For large brands: checkout extensibility, custom-app Shopify Functions, B2B tools. See Shopify Plus developer.
Why do Indian Shopify stores pay an extra transaction fee?
Because Shopify Payments, Shopify's own payment service, is not available in India, every Indian store accepts online payments through a third-party provider, and Shopify charges a fee on those orders. Shopify's India pricing page lists it as 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.
This fee is the least understood part of the Shopify website cost in India, and it sits on top of whatever your payment provider charges. So an online order on Basic pays two tolls: the provider's processing charge and Shopify's 2%. Cash on delivery set up as a manual payment method escapes it: Shopify's help centre on manual payments states that third-party transaction fees are not charged for manual payments. Still check your first Shopify invoice to confirm every COD order was recorded that way.
For a new store selling modestly, the 2% is small in absolute terms and not a reason to avoid Shopify. It becomes a real line as online sales grow, which is where plan choice starts paying for itself. That calculation is next.
When does upgrading from Basic to Grow save money?
Upgrade when one percentage point of your monthly online sales is bigger than the difference between the two plan fees. Below that point Basic is cheaper overall; above it Grow is, even before counting its extra features.
Here is the method, so you can redo it with current prices. Take Shopify's listed monthly price for Grow and subtract Basic's. Call that the plan gap. Moving from Basic to Grow cuts the third-party fee from 2% to 1%, saving 1% of every rupee paid online. Divide the plan gap by 0.01 and you get the monthly online sales at which the two plans cost the same.
At the India list prices on Shopify's page when we checked in September 2026, that break-even came to roughly four lakh rupees of online (non-COD) sales a month. A store below that figure should stay on Basic unless it needs Grow's staff accounts; a store well above it is overpaying on Basic every month. The same method compares Grow with Advanced, where the fee gap is only 0.4 points, so the break-even sits much higher.
Only online-paid orders count here. A store where most buyers choose cash on delivery reaches the break-even far later than its total sales suggest.
Payment gateway charges in the Shopify website cost in India
Payment processing is the second per-order line in the Shopify website cost in India. Your payment provider charges per successful transaction, and the rate varies by method: UPI, domestic cards, netbanking, wallets and international cards are often priced differently. Read the provider's pricing page for the methods your buyers actually use.
Three things to check before choosing a provider for Shopify: whether it offers a native Shopify integration (so orders mark as paid automatically), how quickly it settles money to your bank, and how refunds are charged. Some providers keep the original fee when you refund; that matters for categories with many returns.
We never recommend a provider for a commission, and we never handle your money. You complete the provider's KYC in your own name; we connect it to Shopify and test a live payment and refund. The step-by-step side of this, in Hinglish, is on website me payment gateway kaise lagaye.
Shopify theme cost: how a free, premium or custom theme changes your Shopify website cost
The theme is usually the smallest line in the Shopify website cost in India. Shopify's free themes cost nothing and are maintained by Shopify; premium themes from the Shopify Theme Store are a one-time purchase; a fully custom theme is a development project. Most new Indian stores do well on a free theme set up properly.
Premium themes earn their price when they include a feature you would otherwise pay an app for every month, such as mega menus, advanced filtering, lookbooks or colour swatches. Buy one for a specific missing feature, not for the demo photography, which you will replace anyway.
Custom theme work (new sections, product templates, collection layouts) is quoted per task; see Shopify theme customisation. A fully bespoke theme or a headless front end is a much larger budget and only makes sense for brands that have outgrown themes; headless Shopify development explains when.
Shopify app costs: the line that grows without anyone noticing
Apps are where the Shopify website cost in India drifts upwards after launch. Each one looks small on its own, many have free tiers that expire with order volume, and uninstalled apps sometimes leave code behind in the theme.
A typical Indian store's app list includes a GST invoice app, a courier aggregator, a reviews app, a WhatsApp app and perhaps a COD verification or upsell tool. Five or six subscriptions in, the app bill can exceed the plan itself.
Twice a year, open Shopify admin's app list and ask of each app: what does it do, when did we last use that feature, what does it cost at our current order volume, and does it load scripts on the storefront? Remove anything that fails those questions. For a store with several overlapping apps, a single custom app can replace the lot for a one-time fee, as covered in Shopify app development.
- Keep: invoice, courier and one reviews app
- Question: pop-ups, spin wheels, countdown timers, currency switchers
- Replace: several apps that each do one step of the same workflow
What does the build part of the Shopify website cost in India come to?
With BtechWaleTech, a Shopify website build in India starts at ₹50,000 and usually takes 4–8 weeks. That covers the theme set up for your products, product upload up to an agreed count, payments with COD, shipping, GST settings, policy pages and a tested launch.
The build quote rises with the number of products and variants, custom sections, product descriptions we write, bilingual content, and integrations with accounting or WhatsApp. It falls when you use a free theme and send a clean product sheet. Everything is itemised, so you see exactly which line costs what, and nothing is billed before you approve the quote in writing.
Across the market, Shopify build quotes vary widely, from template swaps to full brand builds. The gap is scope, not the platform: ask each bidder whether payments, shipping rates, GST invoices and a live test order are included. The full list of what a setup should contain is on Shopify store setup service.
A first-year Shopify budget, line by line
Here is how to build your own first-year Shopify website cost in India, using live prices from each provider and our build line. We show structure rather than totals because plan and app prices change.
- Build: from ₹50,000, once
- Shopify plan: twelve months at the plan price, or the yearly price if you prepay, minus any launch offer
- Theme: zero for a free theme, or the one-off premium theme price
- Apps: list each app, its tier at your expected order volume, times twelve
- Per-order fees: expected online sales times (provider rate plus Shopify's 2%, 1% or 0.6%)
- Domain: one renewal
- Upkeep: free for the first two months after launch; from ₹8,000/mo afterwards if you want it
- Marketing: ads, photography and SEO (from ₹10,000/mo) are optional but usually the largest growth cost
We fill in this sheet with you during the quote so the owner sees the total cost of the store, not just our fee. Courier charges are usually passed to buyers or built into prices, so we list them separately.
Is Shopify cheaper than WooCommerce in India?
When you compare the Shopify website cost in India with WooCommerce for a small store with a small team, Shopify is often cheaper in practice because hosting, security and updates are included; at higher online sales volumes, WooCommerce is usually cheaper because it adds no platform fee per order. The crossover depends on your sales and on who maintains WordPress.
WooCommerce's software is free, but you pay for hosting that must handle sale-day traffic, yearly licences for premium plugins, and someone's time for updates, backups and security fixes. Ignore that time and WooCommerce looks cheaper than it is.
Shopify folds hosting and security into the plan but adds the third-party transaction fee and a monthly app habit. Ignore the fee and Shopify looks cheaper than it is. The fair comparison adds both sides' hidden lines. Our Shopify vs WooCommerce page walks through the full decision, and WooCommerce development covers the WordPress route.
Hidden parts of the Shopify website cost in India that owners find out about late
None of these are secret, but they rarely appear in a first budget. Plan for them now and the store's first year holds no surprises.
- The third-party transaction fee on every online order, on top of the provider's fee
- App free tiers that end once order counts pass a limit
- Leftover app code slowing the theme after an app is removed
- Refund fees some payment providers keep on returned orders
- Return-to-origin courier charges on refused COD parcels
- Premium theme updates that need re-applying custom edits
- Paying for a higher plan only to get staff accounts, when roles could be shared differently
- Shopify Plus features (checkout Functions) assumed to work on lower plans
Return-to-origin losses deserve special attention in India. A COD confirmation step on WhatsApp is often cheaper than the returns it prevents; see Shopify WhatsApp integration.
How to reduce the running Shopify website cost in India
Most stores can cut the running Shopify website cost in India without losing sales by trimming apps, matching the plan to real online volume and shifting some buyers from COD to prepaid. Each is a decision, not a technical project.
Right-size the plan
Rerun the Basic-to-Grow break-even every quarter using your actual online (not COD) sales.
Audit apps twice a year
Remove unused ones, downgrade tiers that exceed your volume, and ask whether one custom tool can replace several.
Nudge prepaid
A small prepaid incentive can reduce COD returns, but weigh it against the per-order fee it attracts.
Keep the theme lean
Fewer scripts means faster pages and fewer lost buyers; speed optimisation often pays for itself.
Choose providers on total cost
Compare settlement speed and refund charges, not just the headline rate.
When does the Shopify website cost in India become too high for a brand?
The Shopify website cost in India becomes hard to justify when per-order fees and app subscriptions together exceed what a developer-maintained store would cost to run, or when your pricing and checkout rules need Plus-only features. Most brands are far from that point.
Warning signs: the monthly app bill has overtaken the plan, you pay for Advanced mainly to reduce the transaction fee, your B2B or wholesale rules need Shopify Functions that only Plus allows in custom apps, or marketplace-style selling (many vendors) is forcing awkward workarounds.
At that point the options are Plus, a hybrid (Shopify for the storefront, custom apps for the back office), or leaving Shopify for WooCommerce or a custom store. Each has a migration cost. Shopify vs a custom ecommerce website sets out the point at which moving off makes sense.
A worked example: budgeting a hypothetical skincare store's first year
This is an illustrative scenario, not a client. Say a small skincare brand in Chennai plans 40 products, one founder and one packer, and expects most orders to be prepaid because its buyers are urban and young.
Build: our ecommerce line from ₹50,000, with a free theme, product descriptions supplied by the founder and a GST invoice app. Plan: Basic at launch, because two people can share access sensibly and online sales will start well below the Grow break-even. Apps: invoice, courier and reviews only, listed with their tiers at the expected order volume. Per-order: provider fee plus Shopify's 2% on prepaid orders.
We would add a trigger to the budget sheet: when monthly online sales approach the Basic-to-Grow break-even, or when a third staff member joins, revisit the plan. After two free months of maintenance, the brand can take upkeep from ₹8,000/mo or run the store themselves. That keeps the Shopify website cost in India predictable in year one and shows exactly when it changes.
GST and invoices: the cost side Indian owners should ask their CA about
Tax is not a Shopify fee, but it changes the real Shopify website cost in India for your business. Ask your chartered accountant how GST applies to your products, to Shopify's and app makers' bills, and to payment provider charges before finalising prices.
On the store side, we configure prices as tax-inclusive or exclusive as advised, set rates per product group, store HSN codes and set up an invoice app so each order carries your GSTIN and the correct split. If your accountant wants orders pushed into Tally or Zoho Books instead of re-typed, that is an integration line; see Tally Shopify integration.
We do not give tax advice, and neither should a store developer. Our job is to make the store produce the invoices and reports your CA asks for.
Shopify website cost in India: the same pricing in every city
Our Shopify build prices are the same whether you sell from Chennai, Coimbatore or Nagpur. We work remotely, so there is no city premium and no travel line on the quote.
We hear from D2C founders in Noida and Gurgaon, organic food sellers in Dehradun, textile brands in Salem, handicraft sellers in Bhopal and apparel labels in Thane, and the budgeting questions are almost always the same: which plan, which apps, and when to upgrade.
Payment in India is by UPI or bank transfer against an itemised quote. Stores run from abroad pay in USD by Wise, bank wire or PayPal, with builds from US$750.
