What does a Shopify Plus developer do?
A Shopify Plus developer customises the areas of Shopify that are locked on lower plans (checkout steps, custom Functions, B2B, expansion stores, Launchpad) and connects the store to the rest of a larger business. Theme work is part of it, but rarely the hard part.
On a regular Shopify store, most development happens in the theme and in public apps. On Plus, the interesting work moves deeper. A Plus developer might write a custom app whose Shopify Functions give trade customers a tiered discount, hide cash on delivery above an order value, or block checkout when a cart mixes items that cannot ship together. They might add a delivery-date picker to the shipping step, or wire Flow to hold risky orders and alert the warehouse.
The role is also architectural. Should the brand run one store with several markets or split into expansion stores? Should wholesale live in the retail store as B2B or stay separate? Which of the forty installed apps can be replaced by a Function or a Flow workflow? Answering those well saves more money than any single line of code.
- Checkout UI extensions and checkout branding
- Custom apps built on Shopify Functions
- Migrating legacy Scripts and checkout customisations
- Flow workflows and back-office automation
- B2B catalogues, companies and payment terms
- Expansion store and market architecture
- Launchpad events for drops and sales
Shopify Plus vs regular Shopify: what actually changes for a developer?
The admin looks almost the same; what changes is how far a developer is allowed to reach. Plus opens checkout steps, custom Functions, B2B tooling, extra stores and some Flow features that other plans cannot use.
Checkout
Shopify’s Help Center states that advanced checkout customisation is available only on Plus, including apps that customise the information, shipping and payment pages and access to the Checkout Branding API. Other paid plans get the checkout and accounts editor and eligible apps on the thank-you and order status pages.
Custom logic
Shopify’s developer documentation says only Plus stores can use custom apps that contain Shopify Function APIs. Public apps with Functions work on every plan, which is why a public app is often the first thing to try.
Stores, staff and wholesale
Shopify’s plan page lists 9 expansion stores, unlimited staff accounts and B2B capabilities such as unlimited catalogues, catalogue assignment to companies and locations, deposits and partial payments for Plus.
Campaigns
Launchpad, Shopify’s scheduling app for sales and releases, is available only to Plus stores.
Everything else (themes, the product catalogue, most apps, Shopify Payments, Markets) works on regular plans too. If your wish list lives entirely in that shared area, Plus adds cost without adding capability.
Do you need Shopify Plus? Decision rules a Plus developer should give you
You need Plus when a Plus-only feature fixes a problem that costs you real money or time; you do not need it for prestige, for headless, or because your revenue passed some round number.
- Upgrade when your discount or shipping rules need a custom Function no public app provides.
- Upgrade when checkout needs fields, validation or content on the shipping or payment steps.
- Upgrade when wholesale is a genuine revenue line and you want it in the same store.
- Upgrade when separate country or brand stores make sense and expansion stores replace several paid plans.
- Stay on Advanced when public apps already cover your pricing and shipping logic.
- Stay on Advanced when checkout branding in the standard editor is enough.
- Stay on Advanced when you only want a headless storefront; that works on regular paid plans.
We write this assessment down with the specific features you would use. If the list is short, we say so, even though it means a smaller project for us. Shopify publishes the Plus subscription terms on its own site; compare them against what you would actually use.
Checkout extensibility: what a Shopify Plus developer builds in checkout
Checkout extensibility is Shopify’s current way to customise checkout using app-based extensions, branding settings and pixels instead of editing checkout code directly. On Plus, those extensions can reach the information, shipping and payment steps.
Typical builds include a gift-message field saved to the order, a delivery-instructions box for apartment deliveries, a GST number field for business buyers, a notice about dispatch times during festival rush, or a trust block near the pay button. Branding goes further than colours: fonts, corner styles and section layouts can be set through the Checkout Branding API.
Shopify has been retiring older approaches. Its Help Center notes that the additional scripts box in checkout settings became view-only on August 28, 2025, and that August 26, 2026 was the deadline for non-Plus stores to upgrade their thank-you and order status pages. Any tracking or customisation that relied on those old methods must now use pixels, app blocks or extensions.
A good Shopify Plus developer keeps checkout changes small. Every field you add is friction. We test each extension on a real phone, check it with saved addresses and express wallets, and remove anything that does not earn its place.
Shopify Functions: replacing Scripts after the 2026 deprecation
Shopify Functions let developers customise Shopify’s backend logic (discounts, delivery options, payment options, cart and checkout validation, order routing, bundles) with code that runs on Shopify’s own infrastructure. For Plus stores, they replace Shopify Scripts.
Shopify’s Help Center states that Shopify Scripts was deprecated on June 30, 2026, and that Scripts still published on a store were deactivated. If your store relied on line-item scripts for tiered pricing, shipping scripts to hide rates or payment scripts to hide methods, that logic now needs a Function.
Recreating Scripts is not a copy-paste job. Scripts were Ruby; Functions are compiled modules with defined inputs and outputs for each API. We start by listing every behaviour the old Scripts produced, including the edge cases staff remember but nobody wrote down. Then we choose the right Function API for each, build them in a custom app, and test against a table of real carts: mixed items, discount codes, B2B buyers, international addresses.
Sometimes a public app already does what your Script did. Shopify’s documentation notes public apps with Functions work on all plans, so we check the App Store first. Custom code only wins when no public app matches the rules closely enough.
Shopify Flow automations a Plus developer can set up
Shopify Flow is Shopify’s automation app built from triggers, conditions and actions. Its Help Center lists it as free on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, with some capabilities, such as the Send HTTP Request action on Grow and above and certain custom app tasks, limited by plan.
A Shopify Plus developer earns their fee with Flow by designing workflows that match how your team really works, then documenting them. Useful examples we would consider for a Plus store:
- Tag and hold orders that match fraud signals, then alert a staff channel.
- Notify purchasing when a best-seller drops below a stock threshold.
- Tag first-time and repeat customers for different post-purchase emails.
- Route B2B orders above a value to a manager for approval.
- Hide sold-out products after a delay and republish when restocked.
- Send order data to an external system through an HTTP request when needed.
Flow is powerful but can become a tangle. We keep a one-page register of every workflow: what triggers it, what it changes and who owns it. Where Flow cannot reach, a small custom integration or an ecommerce automation project fills the gap.
B2B on Shopify Plus: running wholesale in the same store
Shopify Plus includes built-in B2B tools, so trade buyers can log in to the same store as retail shoppers and see their own catalogue, prices and payment terms. For many brands that removes a separate wholesale site.
Shopify’s plan page lists the Plus B2B capabilities: unlimited catalogues, direct catalogue assignment to companies and locations, deposit requirements, partial payments and payment requests per fulfilment. A developer’s job is to model your trade relationships into those pieces: which companies exist, which locations order separately, which catalogue each sees and what terms apply.
Real wholesale always has quirks. Minimum order quantities, case packs, credit limits, sales-rep ordering on behalf of a buyer, GST details on invoices. Some are handled by B2B settings, some by a Function (for example, validating case quantities in the cart), and some by Flow. We map each rule to the lightest tool that handles it.
If your wholesale is large, complex and tied to an ERP, we also plan the data flow: how price lists and stock sync, and which system is the source of truth. Our B2B website page covers portals built outside Shopify when that fits better.
Expansion stores or Markets: how a Shopify Plus developer decides
Use one store with several markets when the catalogue and operations are mostly shared; use expansion stores when countries or brands need genuinely different catalogues, apps, teams or legal set-ups. Shopify’s plan page says Plus supports 9 expansion stores for internationalisation, separate locations and similar purposes.
Markets let one store target specific countries or regions with their own settings. That keeps one product catalogue, one set of apps and one admin, which is far less work to run. Expansion stores are separate stores under your Plus organisation. They make sense for a sister brand with a different catalogue, a country whose products or fulfilment differ sharply, or a wholesale-only store.
The hidden cost of multiple stores is duplication: themes, apps, content and products must be kept in sync. When a brand does run several stores, we set up a shared theme repository, a clear process for pushing changes to each store, and a product sync approach where catalogues overlap.
- Same products, different currencies or languages: one store, several markets.
- Different brand, different catalogue: expansion store.
- Wholesale needing its own apps and team: expansion store or Plus B2B, depending on overlap.
- Separate fulfilment and legal entity per country: often an expansion store.
Launchpad campaigns: drops and sales without midnight edits
Launchpad is a Plus-only Shopify app that schedules the changes around a sales event so nobody has to click through the admin at midnight. Shopify’s Help Center describes it scheduling product visibility, pricing, inventory, theme changes and store password protection with set start and end times.
For a brand running a festive sale, a limited sneaker drop or a new collection launch, Launchpad bundles the moving parts into one event: new theme sections go live, products publish to channels, prices change, then everything reverts when the event ends. A Shopify Plus developer sets up the event, prepares the theme variant it switches to and tests the timing on a copy.
We add a rollback plan to every event. If a price is wrong at launch, staff should know exactly what to pause and who to message. For the biggest drops we also review app scripts and images on the landing pages, because traffic spikes expose slow pages quickly. Our Shopify speed optimisation notes cover that checklist.
How much does a Shopify Plus developer cost in India?
With BtechWaleTech, Plus store builds and replatforms start at ₹50,000 (US$750), custom apps with Shopify Functions or checkout extensions start at ₹60,000 (US$900), and Flow or AI automation projects start at ₹40,000. The Plus subscription is separate and paid to Shopify.
Rates for Plus work vary widely. Some quotes are hourly retainers; others are per project. The difference usually comes from how much discovery is included, whether testing is thorough, and whether documentation is part of the deliverable. When comparing, ask each developer to list the Functions, extensions and workflows they will build and how each will be tested.
Our quote breaks the work into those same units. A Scripts migration, for instance, lists each Script, the Function API that replaces it, the test carts we will run and the switch-over plan. You approve it in writing before anything is billed, and payments follow milestones.
Shopify Plus migration costs: from Magento, WooCommerce or a lower plan
Upgrading an existing Shopify store to Plus is a billing change; the development cost comes from what you then build. Moving from Magento, WooCommerce or a custom platform is a full replatform, and that is where most of the migration budget goes.
For an existing Shopify store, the work after upgrading is usually: rebuilding old customisations as extensions or Functions, setting up B2B or expansion stores, and cleaning up apps that Plus features now replace. Many projects start small, with one Function or one checkout extension, and grow from there.
A replatform to Shopify Plus involves product, customer and order history export, data cleaning, theme build, app selection, redirects for every old URL and a careful search-engine handover. Customer passwords do not transfer between platforms, so plan an account-activation email. Store builds start at ₹50,000; our Magento migration and WooCommerce migration pages go deeper.
- Data export and cleaning: products, variants, customers, orders
- Theme build or adaptation, including B2B views if needed
- Custom logic rebuilt as Functions or Flow workflows
- Redirect map for every indexed URL
- Staff training on the new admin and workflows
How to vet a Shopify Plus developer before you hire
Ask them to explain, in plain words, how they would solve your hardest requirement with Plus-only tools, and what they would do if a public app already covers it. A good answer names specific APIs and admits limits.
- Can they explain the difference between checkout UI extensions and Shopify Functions?
- Do they test Functions against a written table of real carts?
- Will custom apps be created in your Shopify organisation, not theirs?
- Do they recommend staying on Advanced when Plus is not needed?
- How do they document Flow workflows and hand them over?
- What is their plan if a Launchpad event goes wrong?
- Who exactly writes the code, and can you speak to them?
We add our own boundaries. We work remotely from India in IST, we do not hold on-site workshops, and we are three developers, so a programme needing a large parallel team would suit a bigger outfit. Legal questions about wholesale terms or tax belong with your accountant or lawyer.
Plus does not rank a store higher by itself; search engines judge pages, not plans. What a Shopify Plus developer can do is make sure the extra complexity of Plus (more stores, markets, B2B views) does not create duplicate or hidden pages.
Multiple markets and expansion stores need consistent hreflang, canonical tags and sitemaps so the right country version appears in the right search results. B2B catalogues should stay behind login and out of the index. Launchpad landing pages need proper titles and should not leave orphaned URLs after the event ends.
Speed matters on large stores, especially with many apps installed. Shopify’s web performance dashboard in admin reports Core Web Vitals from real visitor data and marks app installs and theme changes on the graph, which makes it easier to spot what slowed things down. For AI search visibility, clear product information, accurate structured data and short answer-style content help assistants such as AI Overviews quote your store. Nobody can guarantee rankings or citations; our Shopify SEO expert page covers the ongoing work.
Shopify Plus development risks and red flags
The common failures are upgrading without using Plus features, rebuilding checkout so heavily that conversion drops, and custom apps nobody on your side can access or maintain. Each has a simple warning sign.
- The proposal never mentions staying on the Advanced plan.
- Custom apps would sit in the developer’s Partner account with no transfer plan.
- Scripts are “migrated” without a written list of behaviours and test carts.
- Checkout gets many new fields with no conversion reasoning.
- Expansion stores are proposed where markets would do.
- Flow workflows are built with no register or owner.
- No staging or copy store is used to test Launchpad events.
Shopify Plus development for Indian brands selling at home and abroad
Indian brands usually reach for Plus when they add serious wholesale, sell into several countries or need checkout rules that public apps cannot handle, such as dispatch-date logic or GST fields for business buyers.
Common patterns: a D2C label adding distributor ordering through B2B, a brand running a domestic store and a separate international expansion store, or a high-volume seller needing Functions to control cash on delivery by region or order value. Checkout payments stay with whichever providers you configure in Shopify; we build the rules, not the payment rails.
We work remotely with teams across India. Textile and garment groups in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, sports-goods makers in Jalandhar, packaged-food brands in Pune, jewellery sellers in Hyderabad and Thane, wellness brands in Gurgaon and handicraft exporters in Jodhpur are typical of the businesses weighing Plus. We raise GST invoices where applicable and accept UPI or bank transfer.
Worked example: a knitwear brand deciding on Shopify Plus (hypothetical)
Say a Tiruppur knitwear brand runs a Shopify Advanced store for retail buyers and a spreadsheet-and-WhatsApp process for 80 boutique stockists. It wants stockists to order online at trade prices in case packs, domestic retail buyers to keep cash on delivery, and a separate store for buyers in the Gulf with a smaller catalogue.
As its Shopify Plus developer, we would first check whether a public wholesale app plus Markets would do. Suppose case-pack validation and per-stockist payment terms push it past what apps handle cleanly. Then Plus earns its keep: B2B companies and catalogues for stockists, a Function validating case quantities, another hiding cash on delivery above a set order value, Flow routing large trade orders for approval, and one expansion store for the Gulf with its own catalogue.
On our starting prices, the custom app carrying the Functions begins at ₹60,000, and store configuration work begins at ₹50,000; the real quote would follow a written list of rules and test carts. This scenario shows how we reason; it is not a past client or a promised outcome.
Shopify Plus developer checklist before and after upgrading
Run this list before signing the Plus subscription and again before launch. It keeps the upgrade tied to results rather than features.
- Every Plus-only feature you plan to use is named, with the problem it solves.
- Public apps have been checked for each piece of custom logic.
- All old Scripts and checkout customisations are listed with their behaviours.
- Custom apps will live in your own Shopify organisation.
- Checkout extensions are tested on phones with saved addresses and wallets.
- B2B catalogues and terms are signed off by your sales team.
- Expansion stores have a written sync process for themes and products.
- Flow workflows are listed in a register with owners.
- Search Console, hreflang and sitemaps are checked for every market or store.
- Staff roles and permissions are reviewed at handover.
