Is a Magento to Shopify migration worth it for your store?
A Magento to Shopify migration is worth it when the yearly cost of keeping Magento healthy (servers, patches, upgrades, extension fixes, developer retainers) is higher than the value of the custom features only Magento can give you. If most of your spend goes on keeping the lights on, moving usually pays back; if it goes on features that win orders, it may not.
We answer this with a simple inventory. First, list what the store costs to run: hosting and CDN, security patching, the last two upgrade projects, extension licences and the hours your developer spends each month on fixes rather than improvements. Second, list the features customers and staff actually use: product types, checkout customisations, B2B pricing, integrations and reports. Third, check each feature against Shopify’s native tools and apps.
The result is a written go / no-go note with the reasoning, even if the answer is “stay”. Many Indian brands that started on Magento a decade ago now use a fraction of what they built; others genuinely depend on complex rules that Shopify would handle only through custom apps.
- Move: most spend is on upkeep, the catalogue is standard, the team is small
- Move with Plus: serious B2B, several regional stores, high order volumes
- Stay: custom modules run pricing, production or logistics that no app covers
- Wait: a peak season is close, or an ERP change is already underway
Why Magento upkeep costs so much, and what Shopify removes
Magento puts hosting, security and upgrades on your side of the table, and each of those has a recurring bill. Shopify bundles them into a subscription, which is the main saving a Magento to Shopify migration offers.
Adobe publishes a lifecycle policy for Adobe Commerce: each 2.4 release gets three years of standard support from general availability. Its current table lists standard support for 2.4.6 ending on 11 August 2026 and for 2.4.7 on 31 May 2027. Staying secure therefore means planned upgrade projects every couple of years, plus the testing of every extension against each new version.
Hosting is the second line. Magento needs a properly tuned server stack with PHP, a database, search and caching, and it needs scaling for sale days. Third is extension maintenance: modules from different vendors conflict after upgrades, and fixing that is paid developer time.
On Shopify you still pay for apps, a plan and payment processing, and you give up some control. But servers, core security patches, checkout uptime and platform upgrades are Shopify’s job. For stores whose developer hours mostly go on upkeep, that shift is what makes the numbers work.
Costs that disappear
Server hosting, core patching, version upgrade projects, most caching and scaling work.
Costs that appear
Shopify plan fee, app subscriptions, possible third-party payment transaction fees, and a custom app if a feature has no off-the-shelf match.
When should you not migrate from Magento to Shopify?
Do not migrate when Magento’s custom code is your competitive edge: a quoting engine for made-to-order products, configurator logic with hundreds of rules, deep ERP workflows written into modules, or a marketplace with vendor payouts. Rebuilding those on Shopify means custom apps, and the saving may disappear.
Also be careful when timing is wrong. A Magento to Shopify migration two months before Diwali, or during an ERP replacement, stacks risk on risk. We would rather schedule the switch after your peak and use the gap to clean catalogue data.
Sometimes the best answer is a middle path: patch Magento to a supported version now, retire unused extensions to lower upkeep, and plan the move for next year with cleaner data. If that is your case, a Magento developer can stabilise the store while you decide, and we will tell you so in the assessment rather than push a migration.
Magento to Shopify migration data scope: what to move and what to archive
Move what customers and staff use; archive the rest. A Magento database built up over years holds quotes, logs, abandoned carts, disabled products and attributes nobody fills in, and importing all of it into Shopify only makes the new store messier.
The usual keep list is: enabled products with their images, attributes and inventory; categories that have traffic or appear in menus; customers with addresses, groups and consent status; orders for the period your support and returns team needs; CMS pages and blocks with real content; product reviews; and every URL rewrite that Google has indexed.
The archive list stays in a full database backup and CSV exports that you keep: older orders beyond the chosen window, credit memos, quotes, logs and disabled SKUs. Your accountant can still reach old invoices, and your Shopify store starts lean. Defining this scope in writing early is the single best way to keep a Magento to Shopify migration on budget.
- Move: live products, categories with traffic, customers, recent orders, reviews, CMS content
- Archive: old orders, quotes, credit memos, logs, disabled SKUs, test data
- Rebuild: price rules, cart rules, shipping tables, tax rules, email templates
Mapping Magento extensions to Shopify apps
Every Magento extension gets one of four outcomes in the migration plan: replace with a Shopify app, rebuild as theme code, build as a small custom app, or retire. Most stores find a fair number of extensions they can simply retire because Shopify does the job natively or nobody uses the feature any more.
We export the module list, ask your team what each one does day to day, and check usage in the data. A “one step checkout” extension is retired because Shopify’s checkout already exists. A layered navigation module becomes Shopify’s native search and filtering, or a search app for large catalogues. An SEO toolkit is replaced by proper theme settings. A gift wrap option can be a product add-on in the theme. A custom delivery-date picker might need an app or a light custom build.
The mapping sheet records the old extension, what it did, the Shopify replacement, its running cost and any gap. You approve the sheet before the build starts, so there are no surprises when a feature looks different on the new store. Where no app fits, our Shopify app development work covers a private app built for your store only.
Configurable, bundle and grouped products in a Magento to Shopify migration
Magento has more product types than Shopify, so each type needs a mapping rule. Configurable products become Shopify products with variants; Shopify’s help centre allows up to three options and 2,048 variants per product. Bundle and grouped products become bundles or linked products, and custom options become line-item properties or an options app.
Attribute sets need the most thought. A Magento store selling both tools and clothing might have separate attribute sets with forty fields between them. On Shopify, the attributes that drive choice (size, colour, voltage) become options; descriptive ones (material, warranty, certification) become metafields with definitions; and filters are built from metafields and tags.
Configurable products with four or more selectable attributes are the common snag. Take an industrial valve sold by size, pressure rating, material and end connection. We either move the least-used attribute into separate products, or keep one attribute as a line-item selection. The choice follows how buyers search and order, which is why we look at your order data before deciding.
Tier prices
Quantity-based tier prices become volume pricing through Shopify B2B features or a pricing app, depending on plan and buyer type.
Multi-source inventory
Magento sources map to Shopify locations; stock is imported per location so fulfilment rules keep working.
Can Shopify replace Magento B2B for wholesale buyers?
Often yes, especially on Shopify Plus. Shopify’s Plus plan page describes B2B capabilities such as unlimited catalogs assigned directly to companies and locations, deposit requirements and partial payments, and checkout customisation for separate B2B and D2C experiences. Whether that covers your Adobe Commerce B2B setup depends on how you use it.
Adobe Commerce B2B stores often rely on company accounts with several buyers, shared catalogues with negotiated prices, quote requests and requisition lists. We list which of these your buyers actually use and how often. Company accounts and negotiated catalogues usually map well. Heavily customised quote workflows or credit-limit rules may need an app or a custom build.
For smaller wholesale needs, such as a retailer tag that unlocks trade prices, a Plus plan may be unnecessary; customer tags and a wholesale app can do the job on a standard plan. We decide plan level in the assessment, because paying for Plus without using its B2B or expansion features is a poor trade. Our Shopify Plus developer page explains when Plus earns its fee.
Magento multi-store and store views: what they become on Shopify
Magento’s websites, stores and store views usually become Shopify Markets, languages, or separate stores. One Shopify store can serve several countries with local currencies and translated content, while genuinely separate brands or regions may need their own stores.
Shopify’s Plus plan page says Plus supports nine expansion stores for internationalisation, separate physical locations and similar purposes. That suits a business running, say, an India store and a separate export store with different catalogues and pricing. For a single brand selling in India and a few overseas markets, Markets inside one store is often simpler to run.
Store views used for language need translated content supplied or approved by you; we move the existing translations across and set up language URLs. Each market subfolder needs its own redirects, because Shopify’s redirect documentation notes that international subfolders require individual redirects per location. Hreflang and market setup are checked after launch; our international SEO page covers that work in depth.
How do you keep SEO in a Magento to Shopify migration?
Map every indexed Magento URL to its new Shopify URL with a 301 redirect, carry over titles, meta descriptions and category text, and rebuild product structured data in the theme. Magento URLs often end in .html, such as /brass-diya-set.html, and they become /products/brass-diya-set on Shopify.
Shopify’s redirect documentation adds details that matter for Magento stores. URLs ending in .html cannot be redirected to the same path without .html, so the target must be the Shopify product or collection URL, which is what you want anyway. URLs with query strings may not redirect as expected, so layered navigation URLs full of parameters are handled by redirecting the clean category path and letting the rest drop. Standard plans allow up to 100,000 redirects; Plus allows up to 20,000,000.
We build the list from Magento’s URL rewrite table, sitemaps, Search Console and a crawl, then test every row after import. Google’s site-move guidance says to keep redirects for at least a year and to expect some ranking fluctuation while it recrawls. If traffic has already dropped after an earlier move, start with our migration traffic recovery guide.
- Product .html URLs: one-to-one to /products/ handles
- Category paths with nested folders: to matching /collections/ handles
- Store-view URLs: to the matching market or language path
- Layered navigation parameters: clean category redirect only
- CMS pages: to /pages/ equivalents
Customers, passwords and order history when leaving Magento
Customer records, addresses, groups and order history can move from Magento to Shopify through migration tools or the API; password hashes cannot. Shopify’s newer customer accounts sign people in with an emailed one-time six-digit code, so most customers never notice the missing password.
Customer groups need mapping rather than copying. A “Wholesale” group might become a B2B company, a customer tag with trade pricing, or a segment for email marketing. “Not logged in” and “General” disappear because Shopify does not need them. Marketing consent is carried over exactly as recorded.
Orders are imported as history for the window your team needs, with original order numbers so customer service conversations still line up. Invoices, credit memos and shipments stay in your Magento archive as well, because accounting records should not rely on a migration tool’s formatting. We check a sample of imported orders against the originals: totals, taxes, discounts and line items.
How much does a Magento to Shopify migration cost in India?
With BtechWaleTech, ecommerce projects including a Magento to Shopify migration start at ₹50,000, or US$750 for clients outside India. Quotes elsewhere vary widely, often because one quote includes B2B, integrations and redirects and another does not, so compare scope line by line.
The build cost is only half the picture; the other half is what you stop and start paying. Stop: Magento hosting, patching, upgrade projects and a share of developer retainer time. Start: a Shopify plan, apps, possibly Plus if B2B or expansion stores are needed, and maintenance after the free period at ₹8,000/mo a month onwards. The assessment lays both side by side across two or three years.
Cost drivers we price separately: the number of extensions needing custom replacement, product type complexity, store views, order history depth, ERP or accounting integrations, and design work. A store that accepts a well-built theme with light changes costs much less than one recreating an old Magento design exactly. For a sense of wider Shopify budgets, see Shopify store cost in India.
How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?
A standard Magento to Shopify migration fits our usual ecommerce window of 4 to 8 weeks. Stores with B2B rules, several store views or ERP integrations take longer, and we give those a dated plan with milestones rather than a single number.
The first week is the assessment and data scope. Weeks two to four cover theme, apps, extension replacements and payment setup. A test import follows, then your review, then redirects are built and crawled. The switch is planned for a quiet evening, with Magento kept in read-only mode for stragglers and the database kept as an archive.
The items that slow projects down are predictable: decisions about attribute sets, waiting for ERP vendors, B2B price list clean-up, and product content that was never complete in Magento. Starting payment provider onboarding and ERP conversations in the first week saves the most calendar time.
Shopify or Shopify Plus after Magento?
Choose a standard Shopify plan when you run one brand, sell mainly D2C and handle wholesale through tags or a simple app. Choose Shopify Plus when you need its B2B catalogs and company accounts, several expansion stores, higher redirect limits or deeper checkout customisation.
Many Magento stores start by assuming they need Plus because Magento felt “enterprise”. The assessment checks the facts: number of B2B buyers and price lists, whether separate stores are truly needed, checkout requirements, and order volume. Some stores will need Plus from day one; others can start on a standard plan and upgrade later without migrating again, since the data stays in the same store.
Either way, the plan sits in your name and your billing. We set up the store, build and migrate, and hand over admin notes suited to whichever plan you run.
ERP, Tally, inventory and marketplace integrations
Magento stores often have integrations built as custom modules, and each must be rebuilt for Shopify, usually as an app connection or a small custom integration. Common ones in India are Tally or another accounting system, a warehouse or inventory tool, courier aggregators and marketplace listing tools.
We list each integration’s direction (what flows where), frequency and the fields it moves. Stock sync from an ERP to Shopify locations, order export to accounting, and shipment tracking back to the order are the usual three. For Tally-based businesses, our Tally and Shopify integration page explains the options.
Integrations are tested with real test orders before launch, including cancellations and returns, because those edge cases are where custom Magento code often did quiet work nobody documented.
Magento to Shopify migration for Indian businesses
Magento was popular with Indian manufacturers, distributors and larger retailers who needed B2B pricing and big catalogues, and many of them now want lower upkeep. We run every Magento to Shopify migration remotely, with calls and WhatsApp in English or Hindi.
Hosiery and cycle-parts makers in Ludhiana, engineering suppliers in Rajkot, pharma and chemicals distributors in Ahmedabad, electronics retailers in Mumbai, auto-parts sellers in Chennai, furniture brands in Jaipur, garment exporters in Noida and FMCG distributors in Indore are typical of the stores that run into Magento upkeep costs.
India-specific details are rebuilt on Shopify: UPI and card checkout through a Shopify-supported provider, cash on delivery rules, GST invoice apps approved by your accountant, and trade pricing for dealers. Product pages are tested on low-end Android phones, because slow pages hurt both buyers and rankings.
Worked example: a hypothetical Magento to Shopify migration for a parts distributor
Say a Rajkot pump-parts distributor runs Magento 2 with 3,200 SKUs, two store views (retail and dealer), 22 extensions and a nightly stock sync from its ERP. Its developer spends most hours on patches and extension conflicts. This is a hypothetical example of how we would assess and plan a Magento to Shopify migration, not a client or a promised result.
Assessment: of the 22 extensions, nine are retired (Shopify covers them natively or nobody uses them), eight map to apps, three become theme code and two, a dealer quote form and the ERP sync, need small custom builds. The dealer store view becomes B2B on Shopify Plus with company accounts and a dealer catalogue; retail stays D2C in the same store.
Catalogue: configurable pumps with size, stage and voltage become three-option products; material becomes a metafield used in filters. Orders from the last two years move; older ones stay in the archive. Redirects cover 6,400 URLs from the rewrite table, sitemap and Search Console.
Plan: seven weeks to launch, a Sunday evening switch, and six weeks of monitoring. The go / no-go note shows running costs for two years on each platform, so the owner decides with both columns in view.
