What does a website designer in Kolkata actually design?
Far more than colours. A website designer decides what a visitor sees first, what they read next, and how few taps it takes them to call, chat or buy. Decoration comes last; structure comes first.
On a typical Kolkata business site, the design work covers:
- Information layout: which pages exist, what sits above the fold, and the order of sections on each page
- Typography: heading and body fonts for English, plus Bengali or Devanagari fonts if you run other languages
- Colour and contrast: a palette taken from your logo or shop, adjusted so text stays readable in sunlight
- Imagery: how photographs are cropped, sized and arranged, and where they must not be used
- Components: buttons, forms, product cards, price-on-request boxes and the WhatsApp button, designed once and reused
- States: what a form looks like with an error, what an empty search shows, how a menu opens on a phone
Good design, from any website designer in Kolkata or elsewhere, is the part most visitors never notice. They simply find what they came for. Poor design is noticed instantly: a heading that wraps badly on a phone, a button that hides under the chat icon, a photo that loads last.
The BtechWaleTech team designs inside the browser as much as in Figma, so every decision is tested on real screens early. You see the layouts on a staging link, not as flat pictures that might behave differently once built.
Website designer or website developer: which do you need?
Usually both, and ideally the same people. A designer decides how the site looks and flows; a developer makes it work, load quickly and stay secure. When the two are separate, the hand-off is where projects go wrong.
Here is the classic Kolkata story. A business pays a graphic designer for beautiful page mock-ups, then hands the files to a developer who finds that the mock-ups never showed the phone layout, the Bengali headings are a font nobody licensed, and the hero photo is six megabytes. Weeks of back-and-forth follow, and the finished site looks like a cousin of the original design.
Hire a designer alone when
you already have a developer you trust, or you need brand assets beyond the website, such as packaging, signage and print.
Hire a developer alone when
you have a finished, responsive design in Figma, or you only need functionality such as forms, logins or integrations added.
Hire a design-and-build team when
you want one accountable group from first sketch to launch, which is what most small and mid-sized Kolkata businesses need.
This page covers what a website designer in Kolkata handles on the design side. For coding, hosting and the technical build, our website developer in Kolkata guide goes deeper. For an India-wide perspective, see freelance web designer.
What Kolkata buyers expect to see on a business website
Design is local, because trust is local. A layout that works for a Delhi start-up can feel wrong for a Burrabazar trading house, and a sweet shop's site should not look like a software consultancy's.
Wholesale and trading houses. Burrabazar, in central-north Kolkata near Howrah Bridge, is the city's great wholesale district. Retailers who buy from it want density and clarity: item codes, ranges, packing sizes and a quick way to ask a price. Clean grids beat cinematic hero videos.
IT and professional services. Firms in Salt Lake Sector V and New Town sell to clients who compare them with global competitors, so restraint and polish matter: generous white space, careful type, real team roles instead of stock handshakes.
Food and sweets. West Bengal received the GI tag for Banglar Rosogolla on 14 November 2017, and heritage is part of how many sweet makers sell. Warm photography, the founding year if you have one, and seasonal specials work well.
Healthcare and education. Hospitals and labs on the EM Bypass need calm layouts and obvious directions. Schools and coaching centres need parents to find fees, batches and admission steps in seconds.
Tea and jute. The Tea Board of India and the National Jute Board both have their head offices in Kolkata. Exporters and packers in these trades need provenance imagery and specification tables that a foreign buyer can read at a glance.
How much does a website designer in Kolkata charge?
With us, design is part of the build: a designed and coded business website starts at ₹10,000 (about US$150). Quotes elsewhere in Kolkata vary widely, from template tweaks to boutique design work, and the gap is explained by what is actually being designed.
The design-side cost drivers are:
- Unique page templates. A home page, a service page and a contact page is three templates. A catalogue, a product page, a blog and a careers page adds four more.
- Languages. Bengali or Hindi versions need their own type settings and checks, especially in headings and buttons.
- Imagery work. Retouching, background removal and consistent cropping across hundreds of product photos takes real time.
- Illustration and icons. Custom drawn elements cost more than a well-chosen open-licence icon set.
- Motion. Subtle hover and scroll effects are cheap; heavy animation is expensive and often slows phones.
- Review rounds. The number of rounds is agreed in your quote, so the scope stays clear on both sides.
What we do not do is sell a design for one price and the code for another, then charge again when the two do not fit. If you want a separate brand identity, budget for a graphic designer as well. For budgets across India, see website making cost in India.
How Kolkata website design reviews work over screen-share, round by round
You never need to come to a meeting room. Design reviews happen on a video call where we share the staging site, scroll it together, and change things while you watch. Most Kolkata owners take these calls from the shop, the clinic cabin or home in the evening.
Round 0: references
You send two or three sites you like and one you dislike, plus your logo, shop photos and any printed material. We ask what customers say about your business, because the design should feel like that.
Round 1: direction
Within the first week, the home page and one inner page go live on staging, styled with your real colours and photos. On the call we look at the phone version first, then desktop.
Round 2: templates
The remaining page templates follow, each reviewed the same way. Feedback arrives as WhatsApp voice notes or marked-up screenshots, whichever you find easier.
Round 3: content fit
With real text loaded, we fix awkward line breaks, long Bengali headings and photos that crop badly. This is where good designs become finished ones.
A business site usually moves from first call to launch in one to two weeks once content is ready; larger builds take longer. After each call you get a written summary of what was agreed, so nothing depends on memory, and the staging link always shows the latest version.
Logo, colours and photographs: visual identity on a sensible budget
Most Kolkata businesses already have an identity: a logo on the signboard, colours on the bags, a look customers recognise. Our job is to carry that onto screens, not to reinvent it.
We start by redrawing or cleaning your logo for the web where needed, so it stays sharp at tiny sizes and in the browser tab. Colours get checked against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, which ask for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal body text at level AA. Many shop colours fail that test as text and get used as accents instead.
Photography decides more than anything else whether a site feels premium. Since we work remotely and do not visit premises, there are two routes:
- Phone photos with a brief. We send a short shot list: daylight near a window, a plain background, the same angle for every product, the team at work rather than posed. A modern phone handles most small-business needs.
- A local photographer. For jewellery, sarees, food or interiors, a Kolkata photographer for a half-day usually pays for itself. Share the files and we crop, compress and place them.
Avoid stock photos of strangers shaking hands; buyers spot them instantly. A slightly imperfect photo of your real counter in Bowbazar or your real lab in Salt Lake does more for trust than any glossy library image.
How should a Kolkata business website look on a phone?
It should be designed for the phone first and then widened for desktop. Most of your visitors will arrive on a mid-range Android handset, often from a Google Maps listing or a link forwarded on WhatsApp.
A few rules shape our phone layouts:
- The first screen says what you do and where, in plain words, with one clear action
- Tap targets are large and well spaced; Android's guidance suggests at least 48 by 48 density-independent pixels
- The WhatsApp and call buttons sit within thumb reach and never cover content or the cookie notice
- Menus stay short; long service lists move into the page body as clear sections
- Tables become stacked cards on narrow screens, so specifications stay readable
- Forms ask for the minimum and use the right keyboard for phone numbers and PIN codes
Where money changes hands, the design has to make UPI feel safe and obvious. A clinic's advance booking fee, a caterer's deposit or an institute's registration fee can go through a clear payment link with the amount, purpose and receipt shown plainly. Full carts and checkouts belong to a store build, designed on our Kolkata ecommerce page.
We test every layout on a low-cost phone over mobile data before you see it, because a design that only looks right on a designer's monitor is not finished.
Designing Bengali, Hindi and English pages that sit well together
Bengali text behaves differently from English on a page, and the design has to allow for it. The script hangs from a headline stroke, uses conjuncts that need extra vertical space, and often runs longer than the English it translates. A layout drawn only for English breaks when the Bengali copy arrives.
So we design both from the start. Headings get room to wrap onto two lines, line height is set separately for each script, and buttons are sized for the longer label. For type we usually pair your English font with a Bengali family from Google Fonts, such as Noto Serif Bengali, Tiro Bangla, Anek Bangla or Hind Siliguri, choosing weights that stay crisp on cheap screens.
The words themselves come from you. The BtechWaleTech team writes English and Hindi, so we can draft and polish both. For Bengali, you or your translator supply or approve every line, and we handle typography, layout, the language switcher and separate URLs for search.
Should you go bilingual at all? A heritage sweet shop in north Kolkata, a neighbourhood clinic or a school probably should. An IT services firm in Sector V or a tea exporter usually should not; its buyers read English. We will tell you honestly which group you fall into.
Template or custom website design in Kolkata: which suits your business?
Choose a template when speed and budget matter more than standing out; choose custom design when your competitors all look alike and trust decides the sale. Many projects sit in between.
Ready template
Fastest and cheapest. Fine for a new consultancy or a small service business. The risk: you look like hundreds of other sites, and templates often carry heavy code that slows phones.
Customised theme
A sound base reworked with your type, colours, photos and page structure. Good value for WordPress sites where your staff will post updates.
Custom design
Layouts drawn for your buyers and content, then coded lean. Best for brands that sell on look and trust: jewellers, boutiques, sweet makers, premium clinics, exporters.
Platform follows the design choice. A custom design is often built as a fast static or Next.js site; a customised theme usually lives on WordPress so your team can edit it. Either way, hosting sits in your account. Our guide to custom website vs template compares the two in more depth.
One caution about free page builders: they make the first version easy and every later change slow. If you expect the site to grow, plan the structure properly at the start.
Website design checklist for Kolkata businesses before you approve a layout
Run through these on your own phone before saying yes to any design, ours included. A website designer in Kolkata who has done the job properly will welcome the questions rather than avoid them.
- Can a stranger tell what you do, and in which part of Kolkata, within five seconds?
- Is there exactly one main action on each page, such as WhatsApp, call or book?
- Do headings wrap cleanly on a narrow phone in every language you run?
- Are photos yours, sharp, and consistent in light and crop?
- Does body text pass contrast in bright sunlight, not just on a dark office monitor?
- Are prices, minimum orders or “price on request” shown the way your buyers expect?
- Do forms show helpful error messages instead of failing silently?
- Is your address, map and timing block identical to your Google Business Profile?
- Does the footer carry the details trade buyers look for, such as GST number and registered name?
- Does a link shared on WhatsApp show a proper title and preview image?
If any answer is no, raise it in the review call. Fixing a layout at the design stage takes minutes; fixing it after launch costs a fresh round of work.
Does website design affect Google rankings and AI answers?
Yes, more than most people expect. Design choices decide whether Google can read your words, how fast your pages load and whether visitors stay long enough to call. Nobody can guarantee rankings, but bad design can quietly hold a good business back.
Text belongs in text, not in images. A price list or a menu designed as a picture looks fine to people and is invisible to search. We set headings in a proper order, give every image descriptive alt text, and keep important facts in plain sentences.
Speed is a design decision too. Huge hero images, several decorative fonts and autoplay videos all slow the first screen. Google explains its Core Web Vitals, including loading speed and layout shift, in Search Central. We design with image sizes reserved in advance so nothing jumps around while the page loads.
AI assistants and Google's AI Overviews quote pages that state facts clearly. A well-designed services page with short sections, real headings and specific details, such as what you make, where in Kolkata you are and whom you serve, is easier to quote than a wall of slogans. Local visibility also leans on your Google Business Profile, which should use the same photos and details as the site.
How do I choose a website designer in Kolkata, and what are the red flags?
Look at live websites, not portfolio images. Mock-ups on design showcase sites can hide everything that matters: the phone layout, the load time, how the design holds up with real content.
When you shortlist a website designer in Kolkata, ask for three live sites and open them on your phone. Then ask:
- Who designs, and who builds? Will I speak to them directly?
- Will I see the design on a working staging link or only as pictures?
- How many review rounds are in the quote, and what counts as a round?
- Who owns the Figma file, fonts and photos at the end?
- How do you handle Bengali or Hindi headings in the layout?
Red flags: a portfolio with no live links, a design shown only on desktop, “unlimited revisions” with no written scope, fonts or photos of unclear licence, the domain bought in the designer's name, and pressure to pay in full before the first layout. A designer who asks about your buyers before showing colour swatches is usually a good sign.
If you are comparing options across India, our page on finding a website designer near you covers remote vetting step by step.
Who owns the design files, fonts and photos once the work is done?
You should own everything you paid for, and with us you do. At launch you receive the Figma design file, exported assets, the site code or a complete backup, and admin access to the domain, hosting and site, all in your name.
Ownership has a few design-specific traps worth knowing:
- Fonts. Google Fonts are released under open licences that allow commercial use on websites. Paid fonts need a licence in your name; we flag any before using them.
- Photos. Images taken by you or your photographer are yours. Stock images come with licence terms, and we keep a note of where each came from.
- Icons and illustrations. We use open-licence sets or draw simple ones, and list their sources in the handover sheet.
- Design file access. The Figma file moves into your account, so a future designer can pick it up without asking anyone.
Why fuss over this? Because a redesign three years from now goes faster and cheaper when the next person starts from your original files rather than screenshots. It also means no former designer can hold your brand assets hostage. When you compare any website designer in Kolkata, ask this question before price; the answer tells you how the rest of the project will go.
Worked example: redesigning a sweet shop's website in Bhowanipore
This is a hypothetical scenario to show how a design project runs, not a past client. Say a family sweet shop in Bhowanipore has a ten-year-old website: a slow slideshow, a menu uploaded as a scanned image, and a phone number that changed years ago. Orders for weddings and Puja gifting come through calls and WhatsApp, and the owners want a site that matches the shop's reputation.
On the first call we would agree the design brief: warm, simple and quick on a phone; the menu as real text, grouped by category, with seasonal sweets marked; gifting boxes shown in clear photos; and a WhatsApp button that opens with “I want to order for…”. Bengali and English versions would run side by side, with the family approving the Bengali wording.
The quote would start from ₹10,000, with the bilingual layouts and photo retouching listed as separate lines. In week one, the home page and the menu page would appear on staging, reviewed on a screen-share call with the owner at the counter. The younger family member would shoot new photos by a window using our shot list.
In week two, gifting, story and contact pages would follow, then testing on budget phones. Old URLs would redirect to the new pages. During the two free maintenance months we would add seasonal specials before the festive rush. No visit to Bhowanipore would be needed.
After launch: design upkeep, and clients beyond Kolkata
Every site gets two months of maintenance free after launch: fixes, small text and photo changes, tested updates and backups. Designs settle in during this time. Real visitors show which buttons they ignore and which pages they read, and we adjust.
From the third month, care is optional and starts at ₹8,000/mo. For design-led businesses it usually covers seasonal banners, new product photos, offer pages before Durga Puja, which received UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status on 15 December 2021, and small layout tweaks. You can also handle edits yourself, since every file and login is already yours.
Because we work remotely, the same design process reaches the whole region:
