What is AI Overview optimization?
AI Overview optimization is making your pages likely sources for the AI-generated summaries Google shows above or among search results, while keeping searchers motivated to visit your site. It is ordinary good SEO, sharpened for a results page where Google answers part of the question itself.
An AI Overview is a short generated answer with links to the pages it drew on. Google also offers AI Mode, a conversational search experience that uses similar sources. For a business, two outcomes matter. Being linked from the summary brings visibility and some visits from people who want more depth. Not being linked, when a rival is, means your listing below may be seen less.
The work divides neatly. Eligibility: can Google crawl, index and quote your page? Selection: does your page contain the clearest, most specific answer to a sub-question? Click value: does your page offer something the summary does not? AI Overview optimization handles all three, starting with the one that is broken on your site.
How does Google choose which pages to cite in AI Overviews?
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed. Beyond that, it chooses pages that help answer the query and its related sub-questions.
The key technical detail in Google’s documentation is query fan-out: AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources while building a response. So a question like “how much does a GST registration consultant charge in Pune” can trigger searches about fees, documents, timelines and local providers. A page that answers one of those sub-questions well can be cited even if it would not rank first for the original query.
That shifts strategy for AI Overview optimization. Instead of one long page chasing one keyword, you want a set of connected pages, each answering specific sub-questions clearly, linked to one another. Google’s own list of best practices for AI features reads like a normal SEO checklist: helpful people-first content, crawlable pages, good page experience, internal links, quality images and video, and an accurate Business Profile for local businesses.
- Indexed and allowed to show a snippet
- Answers a specific sub-question clearly
- Reachable through internal links from related pages
- Consistent with what other trusted sources say
- Fast and usable on mobile
Which Indian searches trigger AI Overviews?
AI Overviews tend to appear on informational, how-to, comparison and explanation queries, and far less on navigational searches for a brand or on “near me” searches, where the local map pack dominates. The only reliable way to know for your business is to check your own queries.
Google announced in October 2024 that AI Overviews were expanding to more than 100 countries and territories, with Hindi among the supported languages. So Indian searchers can see them in English and Hindi. Queries shaped like “what is”, “how to”, “difference between”, “documents required for”, “best way to” and “is it worth” are the usual candidates. Cost questions (“interior design cost per sq ft”) often show a summary too, although the numbers in it may be generic.
We run triage like this. Export your top 200 to 500 queries from Search Console. Search each from India on a clean browser, noting whether an AI Overview appears and which sites it links. Group queries into three buckets: protect (you get clicks and an AI Overview appears), compete (an AI Overview appears and cites rivals), and ignore (no AI Overview, or no business value). AI Overview optimization then focuses on the first two buckets. Results vary by user and day, so we repeat the check monthly rather than trusting one snapshot.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?
On average, yes, for the queries where they appear. A Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults’ browsing in March 2025 found that users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits.
The same study found that about 18% of the Google searches it recorded produced an AI summary. That is US data from one month, not India, and it measures behaviour across all kinds of search, so treat it as direction rather than a forecast for your site. Still, the message is clear: for informational queries with an AI Overview, fewer people click, and the ones who do are choosing deliberately.
This is why AI Overview optimization has two halves. Being cited keeps your brand visible in the summary. Protecting clicks makes sure the remaining clickers choose you. Queries where buyers must act (book, call, compare real quotes, see local availability) keep click value because a summary cannot complete the task. Pure definitions lose it. Plan your content around that difference.
How to protect clicks when an AI Overview appears
Give the searcher something the summary cannot: your actual prices, a calculator, availability in their city, a downloadable checklist, real examples, or a way to act immediately. Then say so in the title and meta description.
A summary can explain what a home loan balance transfer is. It cannot show your current processing fee, check eligibility with a short form, or connect the reader to an adviser on WhatsApp. A summary can list steps to register a trademark. It cannot give the searcher your fixed timeline, the documents checklist as a PDF, and a slot to talk. Pages built around those tangible actions keep earning visits.
On the results page, the title and description are your pitch. “Trademark registration in Delhi: fees, 7 documents, apply today” promises specifics. “Everything about trademark registration” promises nothing the AI Overview did not already say. Structured data that makes product prices or availability eligible for display, where your page type qualifies, also helps your listing stand out below the summary.
Keeps click value
Prices, quotes, calculators, eligibility checks, booking, local stock, templates, detailed comparisons, original photos and data.
Loses click value
Generic definitions, obvious steps, recycled lists, and long introductions that restate the question.
The formats most easily used by an AI summary are the ones that answer one thing completely in a small space: a direct answer under a question heading, a numbered list of steps, a comparison table, a definition sentence, and a specific figure with its source.
Look at an AI Overview for a question in your field and notice what it lifts. It usually needs a crisp statement (“A GST registration usually takes 3 to 7 working days after application”), a short list, or a comparison. If your page buries that under three paragraphs of preamble, a competitor with the fact in the first line of the section is easier to use.
Specificity beats length. “Rates vary depending on many factors” gives Google nothing to quote; “installation for a 3 kW rooftop system usually takes one to two days on site” does. First-hand detail is especially valuable because it cannot be found elsewhere: what your process actually involves, what goes wrong, which documents clients forget. For AI Overview optimization, that experience-based detail is the part rivals cannot copy.
- Question heading, then a one or two sentence answer
- Numbered steps for any process
- Tables for comparisons, prices and timelines
- One-sentence definitions of key terms
- Specific numbers with the source named
- First-hand notes: common mistakes, real timelines, edge cases
Does schema markup help with AI Overview optimization?
Schema is support, not a switch. Google states there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data still helps Google read your facts correctly and can qualify you for other result features.
What we add is the markup that matches your business and each page: Organization or LocalBusiness on the home or about page, Service on service pages, Product with price and availability for ecommerce, Article with author details on guides, and BreadcrumbList site-wide. Every property must match visible text; markup that claims things the page does not show is a spam risk and helps nobody.
Treat any offer of “AI Overview schema” or a special tag that guarantees inclusion as a red flag. The honest role of markup in AI Overview optimization is clarity: consistent names, addresses, prices and authors that let Google connect your pages to the right entity. Our schema markup services page covers validation, and earning a knowledge panel covers the entity side.
Adapting service pages for AI Overview optimization
Rewrite each service page so it answers the questions buyers ask before paying, in the order they ask them: what it is, what it costs, how long it takes, what is included, how to choose, and what to do next. Keep your sales message, but lead each section with the answer.
Most Indian service pages open with a paragraph about the company’s passion and experience, then a bullet list of services, then a contact form. That structure gives an AI summary little to use and gives a reader few reasons to trust you. The rebuilt version starts with a two-sentence summary of the service and its starting price, then question sections, a comparison or cost table, a process with realistic timelines, and FAQs written from real customer questions.
Before
“We are a leading provider of interior solutions with years of experience and a passion for quality. Contact us for the best interiors in town.”
After
“A 2BHK modular kitchen and wardrobe project in Pune usually takes 6 to 8 weeks from design sign-off. Price depends on carcass material, shutter finish and hardware; here is what each choice changes.” Specific, quotable and still a sales page.
We do this with you, not to you. You know your prices, timelines and common problems; we shape them into sections that both people and Google can use. For pages about health, law or money, a qualified person on your side approves the facts before publishing.
Should you stop Google using your content in AI Overviews?
Usually not, because the same controls that keep text out of AI Overviews also limit your ordinary snippets. Google lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as the ways to limit what appears in AI features.
Each has a cost. nosnippet removes the text snippet from your normal listing too, which tends to hurt click-through. data-nosnippet can hide specific parts of a page, such as a paid report’s key figures, while leaving the rest usable. max-snippet limits snippet length. noindex removes the page from Search entirely. For most businesses, the visibility of being cited outweighs the loss of some text.
A separate control often causes confusion: Google-Extended. Google’s crawler documentation says it lets publishers manage whether content may be used to train future Gemini models, and that it does not affect inclusion in Google Search or act as a ranking signal. Blocking it is a training decision, not an AI Overview optimization tactic. We explain the options and set whatever you decide; the decision is yours.
How do you track AI Overview traffic in Search Console?
Google says clicks and impressions from AI features are included in the overall Web search data in Search Console’s Performance report, not shown as a separate filter. So measurement means grouping queries and watching trends, backed by manual checks.
We set up query groups in the Performance report using regex filters: the protect bucket, the compete bucket and a control group of queries without AI Overviews. For each group we track impressions, clicks and click-through rate month by month. If impressions hold while CTR falls in the protect bucket, the AI Overview is absorbing clicks and click protection needs work. If impressions rise in the compete bucket, your pages are being shown more often, sometimes as citations.
Alongside that runs a monthly SERP log: the same queries searched from India, recording whether an AI Overview appeared and which domains it linked. Results vary by user, location and day, so we read the pattern over several months. Finally, enquiries: a GA4 setup with key events on forms, calls and WhatsApp taps shows whether visits from these pages still turn into business.
AI Overview optimization for doctors, lawyers and finance firms
For health, legal and money topics, AI Overview optimization depends even more on visible expertise: named qualified authors, reviewed dates, clear sources and careful claims. These are the areas where Google applies its strictest quality expectations.
A clinic page about knee replacement recovery should name the surgeon who reviewed it, state their qualification, date the review, and describe recovery in the realistic ranges the doctor actually sees, with a clear note to consult a doctor for individual advice. A tax page should cite the relevant rule or notification and state the date it applies from. A lawyer’s page should explain the process without promising outcomes.
We handle structure, markup and speed, but facts in these fields must come from and be approved by the qualified professional. No AI-generated medical or legal copy goes live without that review. Our pages on SEO for doctors, SEO for lawyers and SEO for chartered accountants cover sector specifics, including what regulators and professional bodies allow in advertising.
AI Mode and follow-up questions: what changes?
AI Mode is a conversational search experience where users ask follow-up questions, and Google says it uses a similar query fan-out approach. For your pages, the practical change is that more of the buyer’s research journey happens in one conversation, so every stage of it needs a good answer somewhere on your site.
Imagine someone asking about solar panels for a home in Jaipur. The first question is about cost; follow-ups ask about subsidy, net metering, installation time and maintenance. If your site covers only the first, you may be cited once and then disappear for the rest. A connected set of pages, each covering one follow-up well, gives Google a source for several turns of the conversation.
This is where site structure and internal links earn their keep. A hub page links to each sub-topic page with clear anchors; each sub-topic page links back and sideways. The same structure helps human visitors and makes AI Overview optimization more durable than rewriting one page at a time.
How much does AI Overview optimization cost?
With BtechWaleTech, AI Overview optimization is part of monthly SEO starting at ₹10,000/mo (US$150/mo abroad). Other providers’ prices vary widely, so compare how many pages each quote actually changes and how results are measured.
The main cost drivers are the number of pages to restructure, how much subject-expert review your field needs, and the technical state of the site. A clinic with 15 service pages and a doctor willing to review drafts is a modest project. An ecommerce store with 2,000 product pages and thin descriptions needs templates, category-level work and more months.
If the site itself is the bottleneck (slow, hard to edit, content locked in images or scripts that do not render as text), a rebuild on the SEO website plan from ₹20,000 can be cheaper than months of workarounds. A simple site for a small business starts at ₹10,000. The written quote lists every task before any work starts.
A six-week start to AI Overview optimization
Six weeks is enough to triage your queries, fix eligibility problems and rebuild the first set of priority pages. Citations and CTR changes then need a few months of observation, because Google has to recrawl pages and AI Overviews vary between searches.
- Week 1: Search Console export, query triage, SERP log baseline
- Week 2: indexing, snippet control and crawl checks; fix blockers
- Week 3: rebuild the top three protect-bucket pages with you
- Week 4: structured data clean-up and internal links between related pages
- Week 5: rebuild three compete-bucket pages; title and description rewrites
- Week 6: first report comparing query-group CTR and the SERP log with the baseline
From month three, the monthly rhythm is simple: a few more pages rebuilt, new answer pages for follow-up questions buyers ask, and the same measurement. If one bucket stops moving, we change the approach there rather than adding more content everywhere.
AI Overview optimization myths and red flags
Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed AI Overview placement, special AI schema, or hundreds of AI-written articles as the fix. Google’s own documentation contradicts the first two, and the third tends to produce thin, repetitive pages.
Other myths worth dropping. “You need an llms.txt file for AI Overviews”: Google says no special files are required. “Blocking Google-Extended protects you from AI Overviews”: Google says that token does not affect Search inclusion. “Long pages always win”: a clear 800-word page that answers precisely can be more useful than a padded 4,000-word one. “AI Overviews only use top-ranked pages”: fan-out means supporting pages can come from searches you never targeted directly.
Ask a provider to show a triage of your queries, explain what they will change on which pages, and describe how they will measure it with your Search Console data. If the answers are vague, the work will be too.
- Guaranteed citations or top placement in AI answers
- Special tags or schema claimed to force inclusion
- Bulk AI articles with no expert input
- Reports showing screenshots only, no Search Console data
Worked example: AI Overview optimization for a CA practice (hypothetical)
Say a four-partner chartered accountancy practice in Ahmedabad gets most enquiries from guides about GST registration, ITR filing for freelancers and company incorporation, and has seen clicks on those guides fall while impressions stay steady. This is an illustrative scenario, not a client story.
Triage shows AI Overviews on most “documents required for GST registration” and “how to file ITR as a freelancer” queries, citing government pages and two large portals, not the practice. Their guides open with long introductions and hide the document list halfway down.
Weeks one to six: the partners approve rewrites that lead with a direct answer, a numbered document list, the actual timeline they see in practice, common rejection reasons, and a clear offer: “we file it for you, starting fee shown, WhatsApp to start”. Titles change from “Complete guide to GST registration” to “GST registration in Ahmedabad: documents, timeline, our fee”. Organization and Service markup are corrected, and each guide links to the matching service page.
Months two to four: monthly SEO from ₹10,000/mo adds pages for common follow-up questions. The report tracks CTR for the protect bucket and enquiries from those pages. Whether the practice gets cited is up to Google; the pages now give it better material and give readers a reason to click.
AI Overview optimization across India
Businesses in every Indian city face AI Overviews on their research queries, in English and Hindi. We work with them remotely on WhatsApp and calls; nothing in this work needs a visit.
Professional firms in Gurgaon and Hyderabad see AI summaries on many of their advisory queries. Clinics and coaching institutes in Pune, Bhopal and Patna answer health and exam questions that often show summaries, in both English and Hindi. Manufacturers in Vadodara and Chennai field technical how-to queries. Real estate and interior firms in Kolkata and Dehradun compete on cost questions. The city cards below describe each market in a sentence or two.
The approach does not change by city, but the queries do. Your own Search Console data, not a national list, decides which pages we rebuild first.
