What are SEO audit services, and what are you actually paying for?
SEO audit services are a paid diagnosis of why your website does or does not earn traffic and enquiries from search. You are paying for judgement, not for a tool licence: somebody experienced reads your data, separates real problems from noise, and tells you the order in which to fix them.
Think of it like a pre-purchase inspection of a used car. A scanner can print fifty warning codes. A mechanic tells you which two will leave you stranded on the highway and which forty-eight can wait. A good audit does the same for your site, and it should name the cause behind each symptom rather than restating the symptom in bigger font.
At BtechWaleTech the audit is led by another of us, who works on technical SEO, data and AWS, with one of us reviewing anything that touches templates or code and the third of us turning the findings into a timed plan. Because all three are developers, the recommendations are written so a developer can act on them without guessing.
- A diagnosis of crawl, index, content, speed and link health
- Evidence for every finding, usually from your own Search Console
- A priority score so you know what to do this month and what can wait
- An estimate of effort, so you can budget before committing
When is a paid SEO audit worth the money?
A paid SEO audit pays for itself when something has changed and you do not know why, or when you are about to spend serious money on SEO, content or a redesign. Buying monthly SEO without a diagnosis is like starting a treatment before the blood test.
There are also times an audit is premature. A site that launched last month has almost no Search Console data to read, and a five-page site with no traffic usually needs content and a Google Business Profile before it needs a detailed audit. In those cases our advice is to start with SEO for a new website and come back in a few months.
- Organic traffic or enquiries dropped and stayed down for more than a few weeks
- You are planning a redesign, platform move or domain change
- An SEO provider has worked for months and you cannot tell what changed
- You are hiring a new SEO freelancer and want a neutral baseline first
- Search Console shows a rising count of pages that are not indexed
- Competitors appear for searches your business should own
If the only symptom is visitors without enquiries, the problem may be conversion rather than SEO; our page on a website not generating leads helps you tell the two apart.
What should SEO audit services include? A layer-by-layer list
A complete audit covers seven layers. Leaving any one out is how audits miss the real problem, because a traffic drop can start in the server, the templates, the content or the link profile.
Here is the scope we work to. Each layer has its own section in the report, with findings ranked inside it and an overall ranking across all layers at the front.
1. Crawlability
Robots.txt rules, XML sitemaps, status codes, redirect chains, internal link depth and orphan pages.
2. Indexing
Page indexing report reasons, canonical choices Google made versus the ones you declared, noindex conflicts and duplicate clusters.
3. On-page
Titles, meta descriptions, headings, image alt text and internal anchor text by template.
4. Content and intent
Which queries each page earns impressions for, cannibalisation, thin pages and missing buyer-intent pages.
5. Page experience
Core Web Vitals from field data, mobile layout, intrusive pop-ups and HTTPS.
6. Authority
Referring domains, anchor text spread, lost links and any unnatural patterns.
7. Local and entity signals
Business Profile, consistent contact details, Organization and LocalBusiness schema.
How an SEO audit checks crawling and indexing
Crawling and indexing come first because nothing else matters for a page Google has not stored. The check is a three-way comparison: the URLs your sitemap claims, the URLs a crawler reaches by following links, and the URLs Search Console reports as indexed.
Pages in the sitemap but unreachable by links are orphans, and Google treats them as unimportant. Pages reachable by links but missing from the sitemap are often old, duplicate or parameter URLs nobody meant to publish. Pages that are both linked and listed but still not indexed usually carry a quality or duplication signal, and the reason column in the page indexing report tells you which.
We also use the URL Inspection tool on a sample from every template to see the canonical Google selected. When Google picks a different canonical from the one you declared, it is telling you it sees the pages as duplicates, and that single observation often explains why the wrong URL ranks.
- Sitemap URLs that redirect, return 404 or are marked noindex
- Redirect chains longer than one hop and redirect loops
- Internal links pointing at redirected or broken URLs
- Filter, sort and tracking parameters creating near-duplicate pages
- Staging or test subdomains that were accidentally left indexable
Deeper crawl engineering, such as log file analysis on very large sites, is covered on our technical SEO freelancer page.
On-page and content-gap findings in an SEO audit
The on-page part of an SEO audit asks a simple question for every important page: does this page clearly answer the search it is meant to win? Titles, headings and body copy are checked against the queries the page is actually getting impressions for in Search Console, not against a keyword someone guessed years ago.
Two patterns deserve a specific check on any Indian business site. The first is cannibalisation, where a service page, a blog post and a city page all target the same phrase and none of them ranks well. The second is the missing money page: people search for a service plus a city, or a product plus a price, and the site has no page built for that intent at all.
The audit does not rewrite your pages; it points at them. Each finding says which URL, what is wrong and what the page should become. If you want the rewriting done too, that is on-page SEO work, quoted per page after the audit.
- Duplicate or missing titles and H1s by template
- Pages ranking in positions 8 to 20 that need a stronger match to intent
- Two or more URLs splitting impressions for the same query
- Buyer searches with impressions but no dedicated landing page
- Thin location or tag pages that add URLs but no value
Core Web Vitals and mobile checks in SEO audit services
Good SEO audit services judge speed from real-user data first, because lab scores on a fast office laptop hide what a customer on a mid-range Android phone experiences. Google's web.dev documentation sets the “good” marks as Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads.
INP became a stable Core Web Vital in 2024, replacing First Input Delay, so older audit templates that still report FID are out of date. We read the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console grouped by URL pattern, then reproduce the worst groups in lab tools to find the cause: an oversized hero image, a chat widget loading on every page, a font swap that shifts the layout, or slow server response from cheap shared hosting.
Mobile usability gets its own pass. Google indexes the mobile version of your site, so content or links hidden on mobile are, for search purposes, hidden everywhere. Tap targets, sticky bars covering content and pop-ups that block the page on arrival are all noted.
If speed turns out to be the main problem, the fix is usually engineering work; see website speed optimisation for how that is scoped.
What a backlink audit should look for, and what it should ignore
Within SEO audit services, the backlink review answers two questions: are there enough relevant sites vouching for you, and is anything in your link profile likely to be treated as manipulation? For a typical small business site, the first question is the one that matters.
Many tools assign a toxicity score to every link, and that number causes more panic than it deserves. Google ignores most low-quality links on its own, and disavowing links is only sensible when there is a clear pattern of paid or manipulative links, usually from a past SEO provider, or when a manual action appears in Search Console. We read the referring domains by hand and group them into useful, neutral and questionable.
The more valuable half of the review is the gap: which relevant industry sites, local directories, suppliers or associations link to competitors and not to you. That list becomes the realistic outreach plan, far more useful than a disavow file.
- Count and quality of referring domains, not raw link totals
- Anchor text spread, looking for over-optimised exact-match anchors
- Links lost after redesigns or URL changes that can be recovered with redirects
- Links pointing to 404 pages that waste their value
- Any manual action notice in Search Console
SEO audit services for Indian websites: checks that matter most
Indian sites share a few patterns that generic SEO audit services designed for other markets often skip. An audit for an Indian business should check for them explicitly.
Language handling is the first. Many sites add Hindi or regional-language pages by translating a few paragraphs while keeping English navigation, or put both languages on one URL. That confuses search engines about which version to show. Each language needs its own URL, a correct lang attribute and reciprocal hreflang; our Hindi SEO page goes further into Devanagari versus Hinglish targeting.
Hosting is the second. Sites on overseas shared servers with slow response times hurt both speed and crawling for Indian visitors. The third is the WhatsApp and call journey: an audit that ignores whether the click-to-WhatsApp button works on mobile, or whether enquiry forms actually deliver, misses where Indian leads convert.
- Google Business Profile category, service areas and photos for local businesses
- Consistent business name, address and phone across site, Profile and directories
- Pages that load acceptably on low-end Android phones and patchy mobile data
- GST, returns and shipping pages on ecommerce sites, which buyers look for before ordering
- City pages that are genuinely different, not the same text with the city name swapped
How much do SEO audit services cost in India?
Quotes for SEO audit services in India vary widely, and the spread is explained by four things: site size, platform complexity, depth of analysis and whether fixes are included. A report generated by software in minutes and a two-week manual review can both be sold as an audit, so compare the scope, not the headline number.
Site size drives most of the effort. Crawling and grouping 20 pages is quick; untangling 30,000 product and filter URLs on a store takes days. Platform matters next: WordPress and Shopify have familiar patterns, while a custom React or PHP application needs rendered-HTML checks and code reading. Backlink and competitor analysis add further hours.
We do not publish a single audit price because it would be wrong for most sites. You share your URL and Search Console access, we look at the structure, and an itemised quote follows in about two working days. For reference, our ongoing monthly SEO starts at ₹10,000/mo, and a rebuild on the SEO website plan starts at ₹20,000. A detailed price comparison is on SEO audit cost in India.
A free tool is enough to spot obvious errors such as missing titles or broken links; it is not enough to explain a traffic drop or to decide priorities. Tools see your site from outside and without context. They do not know which pages make you money, what Google chose to index, or which warnings are harmless on your platform.
Picture a typical case: a tool flags hundreds of “duplicate meta descriptions” on paginated blog archives and marks it critical, while missing that the main service page has a canonical tag pointing at the home page. The first issue barely matters. The second can keep your most valuable page out of search entirely.
Use free tools, including Google's own Search Console and PageSpeed Insights, to monitor. Pay for an audit when you need somebody to connect the dots. Our free website SEO audit page lists a self-check you can run before deciding.
What SEO audit services should deliver: the report itself
With SEO audit services the deliverable should be a working document, not a brochure. Ours is a spreadsheet with one row per issue, plus a short written summary and a video or phone walkthrough in English or Hindi.
Each row carries the issue, the affected URL pattern and an example URL, the evidence (a Search Console screenshot, crawl export or field data), the likely impact, the recommended fix written for your platform, an effort estimate and a priority. Priority is simply impact against effort: high-impact, low-effort items go to the top, and anything low-impact is parked in a “later” tab so it does not distract.
The summary answers the three questions an owner cares about: what is holding the site back, what should be done in the next 30 days, and roughly what that will take. If a finding is uncertain, the report says so and suggests how to test it, rather than presenting a guess as a fact.
- Issue, URL pattern, example URL
- Evidence and the data source it came from
- Impact (high, medium, low) and effort (hours)
- Fix instructions specific to WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce or your custom code
- Owner column, so you can assign each row to a person
How long does an SEO audit take from access to walkthrough?
A small business site usually takes a few working days; a large store or a JavaScript-heavy application can take two weeks or more. The first day is spent on access and a full crawl, and the rest is reading, grouping and writing.
Time is lost mainly waiting for access. If Search Console, analytics and CMS read access are ready on day one, the audit moves quickly. The walkthrough call is booked once the report is ready, and questions after it are answered on WhatsApp.
Results from the fixes take longer than the audit itself. Technical fixes such as removing a wrong noindex can show up in Search Console within days of Google recrawling; content and link improvements build over months. Our page on how long SEO takes sets honest expectations for each type.
How do you choose SEO audit services you can trust?
Choose an auditor who asks for your Search Console data, explains findings in terms of your business, and never promises a ranking. The questions below separate a real audit from a repackaged scan in a single conversation.
- Will you use our Search Console data, or only an external tool?
- Can you show a redacted sample report, with the fix instructions visible?
- How do you decide priority between two issues?
- Who exactly will read our site, and what is their technical background?
- Will the report say how to fix each issue on our platform?
- Do you implement fixes, and if so, are they quoted separately?
Red flags: any promise of a first-page ranking, a report delivered within an hour of payment, a toxicity score used to sell an expensive disavow service, or reluctance to give you the raw data behind the findings. For broader hiring questions see how to hire an SEO expert and SEO agency vs freelancer.
What access does an SEO auditor need, and how do you stay in control?
Any provider of SEO audit services needs read access, not ownership. Add us as a restricted or full user in Google Search Console and a viewer in Google Analytics; for WordPress, a temporary editor or read-only role is enough for most checks. Never hand over your Google account password or registrar login for an audit.
Everything stays in your name: domain, hosting, Search Console property, analytics property and code. When the audit is finished you remove our access in a couple of clicks. If you later hire us to implement fixes, we ask for exactly the access each fix needs and document what was changed and when.
The report itself is yours to keep and share. You can hand it to your in-house developer, another freelancer or an agency; the instructions are written so anyone competent can execute them without us in the room.
Worked example: an SEO audit for a hypothetical furniture store in Jaipur
This scenario is illustrative, not a real client. Say a Jaipur furniture maker sells solid-wood beds and sofas through a WooCommerce site with about 600 products, and organic enquiries have fallen since a theme change six months ago.
The crawl finds that the new theme added colour and size filters as indexable URLs, turning 600 products into roughly 9,000 crawlable pages. Search Console shows many of them as “Duplicate without user-selected canonical.” The old category pages, which used to rank for searches like “sheesham wood bed Jaipur,” now redirect to the home page, so their links and relevance were thrown away. The hero slider loads four large images, and the mobile Core Web Vitals group is marked “Poor” for LCP.
The fix list would put three items at the top: restore the category pages with 301 redirects from the old URLs, keep filter URLs out of the index with canonical tags and crawl rules, and compress and preload a single hero image. Content work on category descriptions and a backlink push to local interior designers would follow later, once the foundations hold.
After the SEO audit: who fixes what, and is monthly SEO needed?
SEO audit services are only worth what gets implemented. You have three options: your own developer works through the list, we implement a one-off batch of fixes, or the fixes roll into ongoing monthly SEO that starts at ₹10,000/mo.
One-off fixes suit sites where the problems are mostly technical and finite: a redirect map, a canonical cleanup, a speed pass. Ongoing work suits sites where the gap is content and authority, which build month by month. The page on one-time vs monthly SEO compares both honestly.
Sometimes the audit concludes the platform itself is the limit, such as a site builder that cannot set canonicals or a theme so heavy no amount of tuning helps. Then a rebuild is cheaper in the long run, either a search-first website from ₹20,000 or a simpler static site from ₹10,000. After launch you get two months of free maintenance, then care plans from ₹8,000/mo.
SEO audit services across India
An SEO audit is fully remote work: Search Console, analytics, crawl tools and your CMS are all online, and the walkthrough happens on a video call. Scope and pricing are the same whichever city you are in.
We audit sites for businesses in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Indore, Guwahati, Kochi and Ludhiana, among others. Local context differs by city, so the audit pays attention to the languages and search habits of your buyers.
Businesses selling abroad get the same audit, with hreflang and country targeting added, billed in USD by Wise, bank wire or PayPal. See countries we work with.
