What are you really asking for when you search “mobile app developer near me”?
Most people typing mobile app developer near me want reassurance: someone they can reach, hold responsible and meet if something goes wrong. That is a fair need. The good news is that accountability can be written into the arrangement, whereas a short commute cannot fix a weak portfolio.
Before you narrow your search to a five-kilometre radius, list what “near” is meant to give you. Usually it is one of these: quick replies, the ability to sit together while planning screens, trust built face to face, or a sense that the person cannot simply vanish. Each of those has a practical substitute when the developer is in another city, and each has a test you can run during the first week.
A local developer with no live apps and your accounts in their name is riskier than a remote one with installable apps and your accounts in yours. Keep that ordering in mind and distance becomes a tie-breaker rather than the first filter.
- Quick replies → agree a reply window and a single WhatsApp group
- Planning together → a screen-share session on clickable wireframes
- Trust → installable past apps plus a small paid first milestone
- Not vanishing → store accounts and code repository in your name
How to check a mobile app developer’s portfolio properly
Screenshots prove that someone can make screenshots. For an app, the real test is installing it. Ask every mobile app developer for two or three store links and spend twenty minutes with each one on your own phone.
Look at the store listing first. The developer name shown under the app title is the account that owns it. If every app in a portfolio is listed under the freelancer’s personal account rather than the client’s business, that tells you how your app will be published too. Check the “Updated on” date: an app last touched three years ago may no longer meet current store rules. Read a few recent reviews for crash complaints.
Then use it. Sign up, try the main flow, switch off mobile data halfway through and see what happens. Rotate the phone. Increase the system font size. A careful developer handles these; a rushed one leaves blank screens or endless spinners.
- Store link opens and the app installs without warnings
- Publisher name matches the client business, not the developer
- Last update within roughly the past year
- Main flow works on a mid-range Android phone on mobile data
- Offline or slow network shows a clear message, not a frozen screen
- Developer can explain what they personally built in that app
Why your Play Console and App Store accounts must be in your name
The store account is the deed to your app. Whoever holds the Google Play Console account controls releases, reviews, payouts and the listing itself. The same goes for App Store Connect on the Apple side. If a developer publishes under their own account, moving the app later means a transfer process that depends on their cooperation, and on Apple’s side some transfers are refused outright for apps using certain services.
Registering is not difficult. A Google Play developer account needs a one-time US$25 registration and identity verification. The Apple Developer Program costs US$99 a year. For a business account on either store you will usually need a D-U-N-S number for your organisation, which is free to request but can take a couple of weeks, so start early.
Once your accounts exist, you invite your mobile app developer as a user with only the permissions they need: release management, not financial reports or account deletion. When the project ends, you remove them. That one decision protects you more than any contract clause.
We cover Apple’s side, including TestFlight, in more detail on our freelance iOS developer page.
Questions to ask any mobile app developer near me before paying
A thirty-minute call answers most of what you need to know. Ask the same questions to each candidate and write the answers down, so you are comparing like with like rather than whoever sounded most confident.
- Which apps in your portfolio did you build yourself, and which parts?
- Will the app be published in my Play Console and my Apple account?
- Where will the source code live, and when do I get access?
- Flutter, React Native or native, and why for my app?
- How will I test builds during development?
- What happens if Apple or Google rejects the submission?
- What does support cost after launch, and what is covered?
- Who takes over if you are unavailable for two weeks?
Clear, specific answers are a good sign even if the price is higher. Vague ones, or “don’t worry, I will handle everything”, usually mean you will be handling the problems later. For a deeper interview script, see how to hire an app developer.
How much does a mobile app developer cost in India?
Our Android plus iOS app plan starts at ₹40,000 (US$600), which covers a cross-platform app with sign-in, the core screens for one main user type and release on both stores. From there, cost follows complexity rather than the developer’s postcode.
Across the market, quotes for the same app idea swing enormously. The spread usually comes from how many user roles the system has, whether a web admin panel is included, how much custom design is involved, and how many third-party services need connecting. A quote that looks cheap may exclude the admin panel entirely; one that looks expensive may include a year of updates.
Remember the costs that are not the developer’s fee: store registrations, a server or cloud database, SMS for OTP logins, map APIs if you show locations, and push notification services at scale. A good mobile app developer lists these as separate running costs so you are not surprised in month three.
Budget bands and feature-level costs are laid out on freelance app developer cost.
Flutter, React Native or native: which should your developer use?
For most business apps in India, a cross-platform framework is the sensible default. You pay for one codebase that runs on Android and iPhone, updates ship to both at once, and future developers can pick it up without learning two languages.
Choose Flutter when
You want consistent design on every phone, smooth scrolling on budget Android devices and a single team doing everything. It is our usual pick for customer-facing apps.
Choose React Native when
Your web product already runs on React, or your in-house staff know JavaScript and will maintain the app later.
Choose native Kotlin or Swift when
The app leans heavily on device hardware, background processing or platform-specific features, and budget allows two codebases.
Be wary of a mobile app developer who says one approach is right for every project. The honest answer depends on who will maintain the code and what the app must do. More on the Android-only route is on freelance Kotlin developer.
How long does a mobile app developer take from idea to store?
A focused first version usually takes 6–10 weeks. The first week goes on screen lists and clickable wireframes, the middle weeks on building features in small batches, and the final one or two weeks on testing, store listings and review.
Store review adds its own time. Apple typically reviews apps within a day or two, though rejections for missing privacy details or login demos can add rounds. On Google Play, a newly created personal developer account must run a closed test with a minimum number of testers for two weeks before it can publish to production, so plan that into the calendar. Organisation accounts avoid that requirement, which is another reason to register as a business.
The fastest projects are the ones where the owner answers questions within a day and has one person approving designs. Slow feedback, not slow coding, is the usual reason apps miss their dates.
How you should see progress without visiting the developer’s office
The best substitute for sitting beside your developer is holding the app in your hand every week. We send installable builds rather than screen recordings: an internal testing link on Google Play for Android and a TestFlight invite for iPhone.
Each build comes with a short WhatsApp note listing what changed and what to try. You tap through it, record a voice note or screenshot where something feels wrong, and we fix it in the next batch. After a few rounds, most clients find this more useful than office meetings, because they are testing the real app on their own phone, in their own shop, on their own network.
Ask any mobile app developer near me or far away how often you will receive builds. If the answer is “at the end”, you will discover misunderstandings when they are most expensive to fix.
Source code, keys and credentials: what you must receive
Owning the store account is half of ownership; the other half is the code and the keys that sign it. An Android app is signed with an upload key, and Google manages the final app signing key through Play App Signing. Keep the upload key and its password somewhere safe in your own records.
Ask for the source code in a Git repository under your account from the first week, not as a zip file on the last day. Push notification credentials, backend server access, database logins and any API keys should all be listed in a handover sheet with where each one lives and who pays for it.
- Git repository in your organisation’s account
- Upload keystore file and passwords, stored by you
- Backend and database admin access
- Push notification and analytics project access
- List of paid services with renewal dates
- Short guide to building and releasing a new version
Warning signs when talking to an app developer
Most failed app projects show trouble early. None of these alone proves bad intent, but two or more together should make you pause before sending an advance.
- “I will publish it on my account for now; we can move it later”
- Portfolio of mock-ups with no installable store links
- A single price for “the whole app” with no feature list
- Full payment requested before any build reaches your phone
- No mention of privacy policy, data safety form or account deletion
- Claims that the app will be “featured” or reach a download count
- Refusal to share code until the final instalment, with no repository access at all
- No plan for yearly platform updates after launch
On our side, we tell clients plainly what we do not do: no in-person office visits, no hardware or IoT devices, and no projects needing a large team working in parallel. Saying that early saves both sides time.
Store rules your mobile app developer should already know
Google and Apple reject apps for reasons that have nothing to do with code quality. An experienced developer plans for them in the first week instead of discovering them at submission.
Both stores expect a public privacy policy. Google Play requires a Data safety form describing what the app collects. Apps that let people create accounts must also let them delete those accounts from inside the app. Apple asks for a working demo login for reviewers and rejects apps that feel like thin wrappers around a website. Google raises the minimum target Android version each year, so an app left untouched can be blocked from updates.
If the app collects personal data from users in India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 adds duties around consent and purpose. We are developers, not lawyers, so for sensitive categories such as health data we suggest a short legal review alongside the build.
Building apps that work for Indian users on everyday phones
Most of your customers will open your app on an Android phone, many of them mid-range or older models with limited storage. An app that installs at a large size and drains data will be uninstalled within a week, whatever its features.
We keep the install size lean, cache images, and design screens that still work when the connection drops to a weak signal. Login by phone OTP is standard, and UPI plus card payments sit in the checkout where the app sells anything. Where your customers prefer Hindi or a regional language, screens can be built with switchable languages from the start rather than bolted on later.
Testing happens on a spread of screen sizes and Android versions, including a budget handset, not only on the developer’s own flagship phone. That single habit catches most of the complaints you would otherwise read in your first reviews.
A worked example: a physiotherapy clinic choosing an app developer
This is a hypothetical scenario to show the vetting process, not a client story.
A physiotherapy clinic with two branches wants patients to book sessions, see exercise videos and get reminders. The owner searches for a mobile app developer near me and shortlists a studio across town, a marketplace seller and a remote freelance team. She sends each the same one-page brief.
The studio sends a polished deck but its portfolio apps are listed under the studio’s own account. The marketplace seller quotes low but the price excludes the admin panel for staff. The remote team sends an itemised estimate: the app on our Android plus iOS plan from ₹40,000, a web dashboard for reception as a separate line, and a note that she should register Play Console and Apple accounts under the clinic’s name. She installs two of their past apps, pays for the wireframe milestone first, and decides after seeing clickable screens on her phone.
Mobile app developer services across India
Because every project runs on video calls, WhatsApp and weekly test builds, clients in a metro and clients in a district town get the same process, price and response times. Distance only changes which hour we schedule the call.
Our city pages describe the kinds of businesses we hear from in each place: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram, Madurai, Vijayawada, Nashik and Raipur. For a broader overview of India-wide freelance work see India.
Clients in the USA, UK, Gulf and elsewhere follow the same model, billed in USD from US$600 through Wise, bank wire or PayPal.
App developer kaise chunein? Aasaan bhasha mein
Sabse pehle developer se do-teen live apps ke Play Store links maangiye aur khud apne phone par install karke chalaiye. Sirf screenshots par bharosa mat kijiye.
Play Console aur Apple Developer account apni business ke naam par banwaiye, developer ke naam par nahi. Developer ko sirf user ke roop mein add kijiye. Code bhi apne Git account mein rakhwaiye. Hamare saath Android aur iOS app ₹40,000 se shuru hota hai, aam taur par 6–10 hafte lagte hain, aur release ke baad 2 mahine ka support free hai.
