What is the real app development cost in India for a small business?
For a small business, app development cost in India usually lands at the lower end when the app does one job well: order, book, learn or track. With our team, that first version starts at ₹40,000 for both Android and iOS.
The price rises when the app needs several user types, real-time features or a custom backend with business rules. It also rises when the brief keeps growing during the build, which is the most common reason budgets overrun. So the cheapest decision you can make is a clear written list of what version one will and will not do.
Ask yourself three questions before requesting quotes. Who uses the app: only customers, or staff and partners too? What must happen without internet? And what do you need to see from the other side: a simple list of orders, or reports and exports? Those answers shape the estimate more than the colour scheme or the number of splash animations.
App development cost by complexity: simple, medium and complex
Grouping apps by complexity is the fastest way to place yours. The bands below describe effort, not a promised price, because two “simple” apps can still differ.
Simple app
A handful of screens, one type of user, content or forms that send data to a managed backend, no payments. Examples: a catalogue app, event app or internal checklist. Sits at the starting price of ₹40,000 or close to it.
Medium app
Logins with OTP, user profiles, a cart or booking flow, UPI and card checkout, push notifications, and an admin panel to manage content and orders. Most business apps fall here.
Complex app
Two or three connected apps (customer, partner, admin), live location, chat, wallets, multi-city pricing rules, offline sync or heavy reporting. Built in phases, each with its own quote.
If your idea falls in the complex band, start with the smallest phase that earns money or proves demand. Our startup app developer page explains how to cut a large idea into phases.
Yes, and it is one of the biggest levers you control. Building two separate native apps, one in Kotlin for Android and one in Swift for iOS, means two codebases, two sets of tests and roughly double the upkeep.
Cross-platform frameworks such as Flutter and React Native let one codebase run on both. For most business apps, including shopping, booking, education and service apps, the result is indistinguishable to users, and the saving continues every year in maintenance. We build almost all our apps this way.
Native still wins in a few cases: heavy use of new device features on release day, advanced camera or audio processing, or complex background tasks. If your app needs that, we will say so and quote accordingly.
- Android only: sensible for many Indian audiences, where Android dominates phone usage
- Android + iOS cross-platform: best value when some customers use iPhones
- Two native apps: highest cost, justified only by specific device needs
- Progressive web app: lowest cost, no store listing, fewer device features
Backend and admin panel: the hidden half of app cost
Most people price the phone screens and forget the system behind them. Every app that stores orders, users or bookings needs a backend: a database, APIs, authentication, file storage and an admin panel for your team.
There are two broad routes. A managed backend such as Firebase or Supabase gives you authentication, a database and storage quickly, which keeps early cost down and suits simple and many medium apps. A custom backend in Node.js or Python on AWS or a VPS takes longer to build but handles complex business rules, reporting, integrations with your billing or ERP, and data you want fully under your control. A full custom system of this kind starts at ₹60,000.
The admin panel is where your staff live every day, so do not starve it. A clumsy panel costs you hours of manual work every week, long after the build invoice is paid. We quote it as its own line with its own screens.
Choose a managed backend when
Data rules are simple, you want to launch fast, and usage is modest.
Choose a custom backend when
You need complex pricing or approval rules, deep integrations, detailed reports or strict control over where data sits.
Which features raise app development cost the most?
Some features look small on a wish list and take weeks to do properly. Knowing which ones helps you decide what belongs in version one.
The biggest are live location tracking (maps, background updates, battery care), in-app chat (real-time delivery, media, moderation), wallets and refunds (ledgers that must always add up), multi-vendor logic (commissions, payouts, separate vendor apps), and offline sync (conflict handling when two devices edit the same record). Video streaming and calling also add both build and monthly running cost.
Features that are cheaper than people expect: push notifications, OTP login, basic search and filters, ratings and reviews, and a WhatsApp click-to-chat button. These are well-understood and quick to add.
- High effort: live tracking, chat, wallets, multi-vendor, offline sync, video
- Medium effort: checkout, bookings with slots, role-based admin, reports
- Lower effort: push, OTP login, search, reviews, WhatsApp chat link
Monthly and yearly running costs after the app is built
The build invoice is a one-time cost; running an app is a recurring one. A fair estimate lists both, and we always do.
Store accounts come first. Google Play charges a one-time registration fee of US$25, and the Apple Developer Program costs US$99 a year; both are paid by you directly, into accounts in your name. Then come servers and databases, which may be close to free at launch and grow with users. OTP login usually means paying an SMS provider per message. Maps, AI APIs and the WhatsApp Business Platform are billed on usage. Payment providers take a fee per transaction.
Finally there is upkeep. Apple and Google release new OS versions every year and periodically raise their minimum requirements, so an app that is never updated will eventually be blocked from receiving updates in the store. Budget for maintenance from day one. Ours is free for two months after launch and then starts at ₹8,000/mo.
How timeline and app development cost are linked
Time and cost move together, because most of the cost is people’s time. A first version of a medium app takes us 6–10 weeks. Rushing it into fewer weeks does not make it cheaper; it usually means fewer features or less testing.
A typical plan looks like this. Week one: detailed screen list, user flows and the backend data model. Weeks two and three: designs for every screen, reviewed on your phone. The middle weeks: building the app and backend in parallel, with test builds shared through internal testing on Google Play and TestFlight on iOS. Final weeks: fixes, testing on older Android devices, store listing preparation and submission.
Store review adds a few days. Apple reviews can bounce an app for missing account deletion, unclear permission messages or a login wall with no demo account, so we prepare those in advance rather than lose a week to a rejection.
How to reduce app development cost without hurting quality
The safest savings come from scope decisions, not from a cheaper developer. Here are the moves we recommend to clients who want to spend less.
- Ship one core journey first, and add the second after real users ask for it
- Use cross-platform instead of two native apps
- Start with a managed backend if your data rules are simple
- Use ready UI components and design only the screens that make you money
- Supply your own content, product photos and category lists
- Keep one decision-maker so review rounds do not multiply
- Consider a progressive web app if a store listing is not essential yet
What we advise against cutting: security basics, backups, testing on budget phones and store-ready privacy details. Skipping those saves little now and costs a lot later. More on judging a fair budget is on affordable development.
Why app development quotes in India vary so widely
You may receive three quotes for the same idea that differ several times over. Usually each quote describes a different app, even if the proposal titles match.
One developer may assume a template design, a managed backend and no admin panel. Another assumes custom design, a custom backend, an admin with reports, and three months of support. A third might plan two native apps. None of these is dishonest; they simply answered different questions.
To compare fairly, send every developer the same written brief with a screen list, user types and required integrations, and ask for a line-by-line estimate. Then check what each quote excludes. Ask whether GST is included if the developer is registered, whether store accounts will be in your name, and what support is covered after launch. The cheapest line total is often the one that left the most out.
Store accounts, source code and who owns the app
Ownership is a cost question too, because an app published in someone else’s account can cost you the whole project if you ever part ways.
Your Google Play developer account and Apple developer account should be registered to you or your business, paid with your card, and the developer added as a user with limited permissions. The source code should sit in a repository you own, and the backend should run in a cloud account billed to you.
We set these up with you in the first week. At handover you get repository access, backend and admin credentials, a list of every paid service and its renewal date, and notes on how to build and release a new version. If you later hire someone else, they can continue without starting over. The guide on choosing an app developer covers account ownership in more detail.
India-specific costs: UPI, languages, low-end phones and GST
Building for Indian users brings some requirements that affect cost, mostly in small, predictable ways.
UPI checkout is expected in almost any consumer app, alongside cards and sometimes cash on delivery. Regional language support adds translation files and layout testing with longer text. Many users run older Android phones with limited storage and memory, so we keep app size small, avoid heavy animations and test on low-RAM devices. Patchy mobile data means screens should load in stages and forms should survive a dropped connection.
On the business side, if your app sells goods or services, invoices may need GSTIN and tax lines, and your accountant will want exports. These are modest additions when planned at the start and awkward retrofits later, so mention them in the brief.
App development cost in India by type of business
Different industries need different feature sets, so their costs cluster in different places. Here is how common app types usually behave.
Shopping and grocery
Catalogue, cart, UPI checkout, delivery slots and an order admin. Medium complexity; more if you add delivery partner tracking.
Booking and services
Slots, staff calendars, reminders and cancellations. Medium complexity, fairly predictable.
Education
Courses, video, tests and progress. Video hosting drives running cost more than build cost.
Fitness and memberships
Plans, attendance, workouts and renewals. Medium complexity.
Delivery and taxi
Customer, driver and admin apps with live maps. Complex, best built in phases.
Healthcare
Appointments, records and privacy controls. Medium to complex depending on how much patient data is stored.

How to get an accurate app development cost estimate
An accurate estimate needs a short, specific brief. You do not need technical language; you need clear answers.
Write down who uses the app, the steps each user takes from opening the app to finishing their task, what your staff need to see and change in the admin, which outside services must connect, and your target launch month. Add screenshots of apps you like and note what you like about each. Then send it on WhatsApp.
We reply with questions first, because the answers change the number. Within about two working days you receive an itemised estimate: each screen group, the backend, the admin, each integration, testing and store publishing on separate lines, with the recurring costs listed underneath. You can strike lines and we will re-total.
- User types and what each one does
- The main journey, step by step
- Admin needs: lists, edits, reports, exports
- Integrations: payments, SMS, maps, WhatsApp, accounting
- Offline needs, languages, launch month
A worked example: pricing a salon booking app
This is a hypothetical example, not a real client, to show how an estimate is built.
A salon chain with three branches wants customers to book services, choose a stylist and pay online, and wants staff to see the day’s bookings. The brief lists two user types (customer and staff), one admin, UPI and card payment, OTP login, push reminders and a Hindi option.
We would quote a cross-platform app starting at ₹40,000, with lines for the booking flow, stylist availability, payment, reminders, the staff view, the admin panel with daily and monthly reports, Hindi translations and store publishing. Loyalty points and gift cards would be listed as optional phase-two lines. Running costs listed separately: store fees, a managed backend, SMS for OTP and payment fees. Delivery in about eight weeks, with test builds on both platforms from the fourth week, followed by two months of free maintenance.
Freelance app development across India
Because app work is remote, our app development cost is the same across India: the city you are in does not change the quote. We meet on video, share test builds and reply on WhatsApp.
City pages cover the local business mix in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Nashik, Rajkot, Madurai, Raipur, Bhopal and Vijayawada. Clients abroad pay in USD, with apps from US$600; see countries.
App banwane mein kitna kharcha aata hai? Seedha jawab
App ka kharcha teen cheezon par depend karta hai: kitni screens hain, Android aur iPhone dono chahiye ya sirf Android, aur backend kitna bada hai. Hamare saath Android aur iOS dono ke liye app ₹40,000 se shuru hota hai aur pehla version 6–10 hafte mein ready hota hai.
Build ke baad bhi kuch kharche aate hain: Play Store aur App Store account ki fees, server, OTP ke SMS aur maintenance. Yeh sab hum quote mein alag likhte hain. Launch ke baad 2 mahine maintenance free hai. Store accounts aapke naam par bante hain, taaki app hamesha aapka rahe.
