Wix vs WordPress: what is the real difference?
Wix is a hosted website builder: one company provides the editor, the hosting, security and support in a single plan. WordPress is open-source software that you install on hosting you rent, and then you, or a developer, look after it.
That one difference explains most of the trade-offs. With Wix you trade flexibility for convenience. Everything is in one dashboard, updates happen without you, and the price is predictable. With WordPress you trade convenience for control. You pick the host, the theme and plugins; you can edit code; and nobody can stop you moving the whole site elsewhere.
There is one naming trap. WordPress.org is the free software you self-host. WordPress.com is a hosted service built on that software, closer to Wix in how it works. When most developers say “WordPress”, they mean the self-hosted version, and that is what this page compares against Wix unless we say otherwise.
The scale is not in doubt either. W3Techs reported in September 2026 that WordPress runs 40.2% of all websites, and 58.7% of sites whose content management system it can identify. That size means huge numbers of themes, plugins and developers, but also that attackers target it heavily, which is why updates matter.
Wix vs WordPress cost in India: what you pay in rupees each year
Wix costs one subscription for everything; WordPress costs several smaller bills that you control. Which works out cheaper depends on which Wix plan you need and how carefully you choose WordPress hosting and plugins.
On Wix, look at the plan you will really need, not the entry tier. Accepting payments, removing Wix branding, and connecting your own domain sit on paid plans, and the price is shown in rupees on Wix’s pricing page for Indian visitors. Check whether GST is included, whether it is billed yearly, and what the renewal price is after any first-year discount.
On WordPress, the software is free under the GPLv2 licence, but you pay for a domain, hosting, and sometimes a premium theme or plugins billed yearly in dollars. Shared hosting in India is cheap to start, yet the cheapest plans are often slow. Budget for decent hosting and one or two paid plugins at most.
Then add your time. Someone has to design the pages on either platform. If that someone is a developer, a static site from us starts at ₹10,000, which can remove the builder plan altogether.
- Wix yearly: chosen plan (with GST) + domain after the first year + any paid Wix apps
- WordPress yearly: hosting + domain + premium theme/plugins + backups or security add-ons
- Both: your hours, or a developer’s fee, to build and update pages
Is Wix easier than WordPress for a beginner?
Yes. Wix is easier for a first-time site owner because the editor, hosting and templates are ready on sign-up and you move blocks around visually. WordPress asks you to pick hosting, install the software, choose a theme and learn a dashboard with many settings.
The ease has limits, though. Wix’s free-positioning editor lets you drag anything anywhere, which is lovely on desktop and can produce messy mobile layouts if you are not careful. Most Indian visitors arrive on Android phones, so check every page in Wix’s mobile view before publishing.
WordPress becomes easy after setup. Once a developer has built the pages with the block editor, adding a blog post, changing a price or swapping a photo is simple, and staff can be given limited roles so they cannot break the layout. The hard part is the first week, not the next year.
Pick Wix for ease if
You will build the site yourself, have a few evenings free, and want nothing to do with hosting or updates.
Pick WordPress for ease if
Someone sets it up for you, and afterwards several people need to post content without touching the design.
Wix vs WordPress for SEO: which ranks better on Google?
Both can rank. Google ranks pages, not platforms. The difference is the ceiling: Wix covers SEO basics well inside its settings, while WordPress lets you go further on structure, speed, schema and scale because you control the code and hosting.
For a ten-page local business site, Wix’s SEO tools are usually enough: custom titles and descriptions, alt text, a sitemap, redirects and structured data options. Where people hit the ceiling is later. Fine control of page speed on low-end phones, custom schema for services and FAQs, URL structures for hundreds of location pages, and server-level settings are easier or only possible on WordPress or custom code.
Speed matters because Google uses Core Web Vitals. The web.dev guidance sets good at a Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less. A heavy WordPress theme can miss those just as easily as a Wix page; lean WordPress, or a hand-built static site, passes more comfortably.
Honest note: nobody can guarantee rankings on either. Content, local reviews and links matter more than which box you ticked. Our freelance SEO work starts at ₹10,000/mo and reports from Google Search Console so you can see progress yourself.
Wix vs WordPress for a small online store
For a catalogue of a few dozen products, Wix’s built-in store is quicker to set up, while WordPress with WooCommerce gives more control over checkout, invoices and product data once you grow. Neither is wrong for a small shop; the question is where you will be in a year.
Wix Stores lives inside the plan you pay for, so selling online means choosing a plan that supports payments. Setting up products, shipping and a basic checkout is straightforward. What Indian sellers usually need next is GST invoices with the right fields, COD rules by pin code, and UPI prominence at checkout; each depends on what the Wix apps available in India support at the time.
WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin. Product variants, bulk uploads, custom invoice templates and Indian payment options are all available through extensions, and a developer can adjust anything in code. The cost is upkeep: WooCommerce, its extensions and WordPress core all need regular updates and testing.

Who owns your website on Wix vs WordPress?
On both platforms you own your content: your text, photos and brand. The difference is the website itself. A Wix site cannot leave Wix; a self-hosted WordPress site is a set of files and a database that you can copy anywhere.
Wix is clear about this in its own help centre: because it is a SaaS platform using proprietary technology, a site has to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers. Your domain can move, and your content can be copied out, but the design and structure have to be rebuilt on the new platform.
With WordPress, ownership depends on how it was set up. If a developer registered the domain and hosting in their own name, you may own the content and still be unable to reach it. Insist that the domain, hosting account and admin login are created in your name from the first day. That is our standard, whatever platform we build on.
- Domain: registered with your email and your payment card
- Hosting or Wix account: in your name, with us added as a collaborator
- Admin login: your own, with full rights, not a shared password
- Backups: a copy you can download, stored outside the host
Can I move from Wix to WordPress later, and what does it involve?
Yes, but it is a rebuild, not a transfer. You recreate the pages in WordPress (or a custom site), copy the content across, and set up redirects so Google and old links reach the new URLs.
Blog posts can sometimes be pulled out through Wix’s RSS feed and imported, which saves typing. Pages, forms, store products and member areas usually need rebuilding by hand. Product data can be exported from Wix Stores and imported into WooCommerce with some cleanup. Images need downloading and re-uploading.
The step people skip is redirects. Wix URLs often have a different pattern from WordPress ones, so every old address needs a 301 redirect to its new home. Missing this is the most common reason a small business loses its Google traffic after moving. We map each URL in a spreadsheet, test it after launch and resubmit the sitemap in Search Console.
Moving the other way, from WordPress to Wix, is equally a rebuild. Going from WordPress to another WordPress host, by contrast, is a copy of files and database that can take an afternoon.
Maintenance and security: Wix vs WordPress after launch
Wix maintains itself; WordPress needs someone to maintain it. That is the honest summary and the single biggest reason small businesses stay on Wix.
On Wix, the company patches the platform, runs the servers and handles SSL. Your job is content. On WordPress, core, theme and every plugin get updates, some of them security fixes. Skip updates for months, use a pirated “nulled” theme, or install twenty plugins, and the risk of a hacked site rises sharply. Cleaning up a spam-injected site costs far more than the updates that would have prevented it, so budget for upkeep from day one.
Good WordPress maintenance is not hard: a short plugin list, automatic minor updates, weekly backups stored off the server, a firewall or security plugin, and someone who tests updates on a copy before applying big ones. With us, that is free for two months after launch and then available from ₹8,000/mo a month. You can also run it yourself with a checklist we hand over.
Wix vs WordPress for blogging and content-heavy sites
For regular blogging, WordPress is the stronger choice. It started as blogging software, so categories, tags, scheduling, author roles, revisions and import/export are mature. Wix’s blog works for occasional posts but is less flexible for a large archive.
Content-heavy sites also need things like related-post blocks, custom fields (for example, a course’s duration and fee on every course page), and structured data per post. WordPress plugins or light code handle these; Wix supports some through its own tools and apps, with less room to customise.
If your plan is hundreds of pages generated from data, such as one page per service per city, neither is ideal on its own. That is where a developer-built SEO site fits, starting at ₹20,000 for 299+ pages, with pages produced from structured data and consistent schema on every one. Our SEO website developer page explains how those builds work.
Wix or WordPress: the right pick for common Indian business types
The answer changes with the business. Here is how we would advise a few typical owners, assuming they want a site that brings enquiries rather than a hobby project.
Doctor or small clinic
Few pages, rarely changed, needs to load fast and show timings, location and a WhatsApp button. Wix works if you build it yourself; a lean static site is faster and cheaper to run.
Coaching institute or school
Batch updates, results, notices and often Hindi pages. WordPress suits staff who post updates weekly; set up roles so they cannot break the layout.
Restaurant or cafe
Menu, photos, location, reservations or delivery links. Wix is fine; keep the menu as text, not only images, so Google can read it.
Boutique or home brand selling online
Small catalogue today, bigger later. Wix Stores for a quick start; WooCommerce or a custom store when you need GST invoices and bulk product updates.
Consultant, CA or lawyer
Trust and search visibility on service pages matter most. WordPress or a custom site for deeper SEO control; Wix is acceptable for a simple profile.
Manufacturer or exporter
Technical product pages, downloadable catalogues and quote forms. WordPress or custom; plan the product data structure first.
When should you skip both Wix and WordPress and hire a developer?
Skip both when you rarely edit the site, care about speed on budget phones, want no monthly platform bill, and would rather message someone than learn a dashboard. A hand-built static site covers that neatly.
Skip both also when your needs go beyond a website: bookings with business rules, a customer portal, integration with your billing software, or an app later. Forcing those into Wix apps or a stack of WordPress plugins tends to create a fragile site. A custom web app, from ₹60,000 with us, is cleaner for logins, roles and dashboards.
Do not skip both if you want to post content daily yourself and have nobody technical to help. In that case WordPress set up well, or Wix if you prefer simplicity, will serve you better than a static site that needs a developer for every change. For the broader decision on custom versus ready-made layouts, see custom website vs template, and for app-builder style tools, no code vs custom development.
Wix vs WordPress for AI search and Google AI Overviews
AI answers quote pages that are clear, well structured and technically easy to read. Both platforms can produce such pages; WordPress and custom sites give more control over the details that help.
What helps: one clear H1 per page, question-style headings with direct answers underneath, FAQ and organisation schema, fast loading, and text that is real HTML rather than words inside images. Wix supports structured data settings and clean headings if you use them carefully. On WordPress, schema plugins and theme control let you add richer markup, and on a custom site we write it by hand for each page type.
The bigger factor is content. A clinic page that states its services, doctors’ qualifications, timings and fees in plain sentences is far more quotable than a beautifully designed page with three lines of text. Whichever platform you choose, write for a person asking a question.
Wix vs WordPress decision checklist
Answer each line with the option that fits you. If most answers land in one column, that platform is your answer.
- I will build the site myself → Wix. Someone will build it for me → WordPress or custom.
- I never want to think about updates → Wix or a static custom site.
- I plan to blog or publish updates weekly → WordPress.
- I want to rank for many service or city pages → WordPress or a custom SEO site.
- I will sell a small catalogue now → Wix Stores or WooCommerce; bigger later → WooCommerce or custom.
- I may want to move hosts or developers later → WordPress or custom.
- I need bookings, logins or integrations → custom web app.
- My budget is tiny and time is plenty → Wix, built by you.

Hiring someone to build on Wix or WordPress: what to check
Hire on proof and ownership terms. Ask for live sites on the platform you have chosen, open them on your own phone, and get it in writing that the domain, hosting or Wix account and admin logins will be yours.
For WordPress, ask which theme and plugins they will use and why. A good answer names a small, well-maintained set. A worrying answer is a long list of premium plugins, or a theme bought from an unknown source. Ask how they will handle updates and backups after launch, and whether they will hand over a copy of the site files.
For Wix, ask whether they will build inside your account or theirs and transfer it later. Building directly in yours is simpler and safer. Marketplaces such as Fiverr and Upwork list many Wix and WordPress freelancers, with the platform taking a fee on each payment; quality varies widely, so a small paid first task is a sensible test. More on this in hiring a WordPress developer.
Worked example: a physiotherapy clinic choosing between Wix and WordPress
This is a hypothetical scenario to show the reasoning, not a real client.
Say a two-therapist physiotherapy clinic in Madurai wants a site. The owner is busy, not technical, and wants patients to find the clinic for “back pain physiotherapy near me” and book by WhatsApp. Pages needed: home, about the therapists, six conditions treated, fees, location and contact. Content changes maybe twice a year. Tamil pages would be nice.
Wix would work if the owner had time to build it; they do not. WordPress would work, but it brings update duties for a site that rarely changes. Our suggestion would be a static site from ₹10,000: fast on phones, no builder plan, a WhatsApp button with a prefilled message, clinic schema with opening hours, and Tamil versions of the condition pages with proper language tags. Edits come to us on WhatsApp and are free for two months.
If the clinic later wanted online appointment slots and patient records, we would scope a custom tool separately; see physiotherapy clinic software.
Wix vs WordPress advice for businesses across India
We work remotely with owners in every state, so the process is the same wherever you are: a WhatsApp conversation, an itemised quote, a staging link, and payment by UPI or bank transfer.
What differs is the typical business. Handicraft sellers in Jodhpur and Udaipur weigh Wix Stores against WooCommerce for small export catalogues. Hosiery and garment units in Ludhiana and Tiruppur need product pages that WordPress handles well. Hotels in Shimla and tour operators in Agra care most about speed and booking enquiries. Temples, sweet shops and hotels in Varanasi and Amritsar often want Hindi or Punjabi pages alongside English.
Outside India? The same work is quoted in USD, with a static site from US$150, paid by Wise, bank wire or PayPal.
