What does a Wix website designer actually do?
A Wix website designer turns your business into a clear, well-structured site inside the Wix platform and configures everything behind it. You get the look, but also the settings, apps and rules that make the site work for customers and for Google.
Owners often assume the job is picking a template and swapping photos. That is maybe a fifth of it. The rest is deciding which pages exist and why, writing headings people actually search for, making each section behave on a 6-inch phone, wiring the contact form to the right inbox, setting up Wix Stores or Wix Bookings, and filling in the SEO fields that Wix leaves blank until someone opens them.
At BtechWaleTech the work is split by strength. One of us handles layout and any custom code, another of us covers technical SEO, Search Console and analytics, and the third of us runs the plan so you know what is done and what is waiting on you. You talk to all three on one WhatsApp group.
- Page plan: which pages you need, what each one should make a visitor do
- Design: layout, fonts, colours and images that fit your brand
- Mobile: a separate check of every section in the mobile view
- Apps: Wix Stores, Wix Bookings, forms, chat, members if needed
- SEO: page titles, descriptions, headings, alt text, redirects, Search Console
- Handover: a short walkthrough so your team can edit text and photos
When is Wix the right choice for a small business?
Wix is the right choice when you want a good-looking site quickly, you want to edit it yourself without a developer, and your needs sit inside what Wix apps already do. That describes a large share of Indian small businesses: a salon, a yoga studio, a photographer, a tuition centre, a boutique with a few dozen products.
It is the wrong choice when the site must scale to hundreds of location or service pages, when you need custom logic that Wix apps cannot handle, or when you want the freedom to move hosts at will. A Wix site runs on Wix; if you later leave, the site is rebuilt elsewhere. Our Wix to custom website guide covers what that move involves.
Wix fits when
You have under about fifty pages, one or two people editing, a store with a modest catalogue or a bookings calendar, and you value convenience over total control.
Look elsewhere when
You plan a 299+ page SEO site, a multi-vendor marketplace, deep ERP or Tally integration, or a site that must be hosted on your own servers. A programmatic SEO website or custom build suits those better.
A good Wix website designer should say this out loud at the first call. If someone only ever answers “Wix can do that”, be careful.
Wix Editor vs Wix Studio: which one should your Wix website designer use?
Use the classic Wix Editor when you will edit the site yourself and want the simplest interface. Use Wix Studio when the design needs precise responsive control, custom CSS or code, and the site will mostly be maintained by a professional.
Wix describes Wix Studio as “the website building platform for designers, developers, and marketers”, aimed at people building sites for clients. Its responsive editor adapts layouts across screen sizes, it allows custom CSS, and it includes a cloud development environment where developers write JavaScript and use npm packages. It also gives client-specific roles and permissions, which matters when an outside Wix website designer builds the site and your staff take over content.
For most owner-run sites, the classic editor is enough and easier to live with. We pick Studio when a brand needs pixel-level layouts on tablets and laptops, when the site pulls data from an external system, or when you want a code-free CMS that non-technical staff can update without touching the design.
- Owner edits every week, simple pages: Wix Editor
- Design-led brand, many breakpoints: Wix Studio
- External data or custom logic: Wix Studio with code
- Unsure: start with the editor you will actually open after launch
Which Wix plan do you need, and how much does it cost in India?
Choose the lowest Wix premium plan that includes the features you will actually use. Wix lists four premium plans: Light, Core, Business and Business Elite. Prices are shown in local currency and, in Wix's words, “prices and currency vary by location”, so the rupee amount you see on the Wix pricing page is the one that applies to you.
What changes between plans is capability. According to the Wix pricing page, Light gives 2 GB of storage with no ecommerce or scheduling features. Core adds basic ecommerce and scheduling and services, with 50 GB of storage. Business adds standard ecommerce and 100 GB. Business Elite adds advanced ecommerce and unlimited storage. Every premium plan listed includes a free domain for the first year.
We do not resell Wix plans or add a margin. You buy the plan on your own card, in your own account, so the renewal reminders reach you and not us. See the plan-to-need table further down this page for our recommendation by business type, and our guide to yearly website running costs for the other bills to budget for.
How much does a Wix website designer charge in India?
A Wix website designer usually charges per project. Our Wix design and setup starts at ₹10,000 (US$150) for a brochure site and ₹50,000 for a Wix Stores build; quotes from other designers vary widely, so compare what each one includes rather than the headline figure.
Four things move a Wix quote. First, the number of distinct page layouts: ten pages sharing two layouts cost less than six pages each designed from scratch. Second, apps: a bookings calendar with three staff and deposit rules is real configuration work. Third, content: if we write the copy, source photos or load a hundred products with variants, that is priced in. Fourth, SEO depth: basic settings are included, while keyword research across many service pages is a separate line.
What should not move the quote is the Wix plan. If a designer's price rises because “premium plan included”, ask to see the plan in your own name. The full breakdown of our starting prices lives on the pricing page.
Is Wix good for SEO? What a Wix website designer must configure
Wix can rank well on Google when the SEO settings are filled in properly; the platform handles the technical base, and your Wix website designer handles the page-level work. Nobody can guarantee rankings on any platform, and we never promise them.
On the platform side, Wix's own SEO page states that it creates and maintains your XML sitemap, gives every site an editable robots.txt, sets self-referencing canonical tags by default, adds structured data to dynamic pages such as products, events and blog posts, and is built on server-side rendering. It also offers an SEO Setup Checklist and a direct Google Search Console connection.
The part left to the designer is the part that decides rankings: one clear topic per page, a title and meta description written for the search, a single H1, descriptive image alt text, internal links between related services, and a Google Business Profile that matches the site. We also check Core Web Vitals in PageSpeed Insights, because heavy image sliders and too many apps are the usual reason a Wix site feels slow. If your site is live but invisible, read why a website does not show on Google.
- Unique SEO title and description on every page
- One H1 per page, logical H2 and H3 headings
- Alt text on every meaningful image
- Search Console connected and sitemap submitted
- 301 redirects for any renamed or removed page
- Local business details consistent with Google Business Profile
Redirects, renamed pages and Wix SEO during a redesign
If a page URL changes during a Wix redesign, add a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one before you publish. Skipping this is the most common reason a redesigned Wix site loses traffic.
Wix's SEO documentation says its redirect manager supports single redirects and bulk imports of up to 500 URLs at once. That is plenty for a small business site. We export the list of old URLs from Search Console and your current sitemap, map each to its closest new page, and import the file in one go.
Google's guidance on site moves recommends permanent redirects such as 301 and advises keeping them “for as long as possible, generally at least 1 year”. On Wix there is no reason to delete them at all. After launch we watch the Pages report in Search Console for a few weeks and fix any address that slipped through. For bigger platform changes, our traffic drop after migration guide explains the recovery steps.
Wix Stores: can a Wix website designer set up an online shop for India?
Yes. A Wix website designer can set up Wix Stores for a small catalogue, with online payments, shipping rules and order emails, as long as you are on a Wix plan that includes ecommerce. Per the Wix pricing page, ecommerce starts on the Core plan and becomes more capable on Business and Business Elite.
The work is mostly structure. Products need clean names, variants (size, colour), SKU codes, weights for shipping, and collections that match how customers browse. Shipping zones need rules for local delivery, state-wise courier rates or free shipping above an amount. Checkout needs your business details so invoices carry your GSTIN if you are registered.
Where Wix Stores stops fitting: thousands of SKUs with daily stock syncs, marketplaces with many sellers, or a checkout that must talk to your warehouse software. Compare with Shopify vs Wix or look at our ecommerce developer page if you expect to grow into that.
- Products with variants, SKUs and weights
- Collections that mirror how customers browse
- Shipping zones for local, state and national delivery
- Online checkout using the payment options Wix offers for your country
- Order and shipping emails with your branding
- Store policies pages: shipping, returns, privacy
Wix Bookings for salons, studios, clinics and coaches
Wix Bookings is the reason many service businesses choose Wix. It lets clients pick a service, a staff member and a time slot, pay online or at the visit, and receive reminders, all without a separate booking app.
Wix's Bookings page lists staff calendars with individual working hours, deposits or full payments at checkout, a calendar that prevents double bookings, multi-location support, and automated reminders by email, SMS or WhatsApp. A WhatsApp reminder is a real advantage in India, where many customers ignore email.
Configuration is where designs go wrong. Buffer times between appointments, cancellation windows, which services need a deposit, and which staff can do which treatment are business decisions. We ask for these on one sheet before building. If you need patient records or treatment notes, Wix Bookings is not a clinic management system; our clinic software page covers that case.
Wix limitations to know before you hire a Wix website designer
Wix is convenient because Wix controls the platform, and that same control is its main limitation. Know these before you commit, not after a year of content has gone in.
A Wix website designer cannot change how Wix hosts, caches or renders your pages. Your site's speed has a ceiling set by the platform plus whatever apps you add. Very large sites become tedious to manage page by page. And because the site lives on Wix, leaving means rebuilding the design elsewhere and moving content across; the domain and your written content stay yours, the Wix layout does not travel.
- Hosting and code are managed by Wix, not by you
- Every third-party app adds weight; keep them few
- Hundreds of near-identical pages are slow to build by hand
- Moving off Wix later means a rebuild on the new platform
- The plan is a recurring cost for as long as the site is live
- Complex integrations may need Velo code or may not be possible
None of these rule Wix out for a small business. They are reasons to choose deliberately. If two or more of them worry you, read free vs paid websites and custom website vs template before deciding.
How to choose a Wix website designer: seven questions to ask
Pick the Wix website designer who asks about your customers before your colours, shows live Wix sites you can open on your phone, and is clear that the account will be yours. Everything else follows from those three.
Ask each candidate the questions below and compare answers side by side. The quality of the answers matters more than the price, because a cheap Wix build with no SEO settings costs you months of lost enquiries.
- Can I open three live Wix sites you built, on my own phone?
- Will the Wix account and plan be in my name from day one?
- Which Wix plan do you recommend for me, and why not a cheaper one?
- Do you fill in SEO titles, descriptions and alt text on every page?
- How do you handle the mobile layout: auto or section by section?
- What happens if I want to leave Wix in two years?
- What is included in the quote, and what is billed separately?
If a designer offers to “host it on my Wix account for convenience”, decline politely. Transfers are possible but awkward, and you should never need anyone's permission to change your own site.
How a Wix website designer project runs, week by week
A brochure site on Wix typically goes live in 1–2 weeks once content is ready; a Wix Stores build takes 4–8 weeks, mostly because product data takes time. Here is how the days usually fall for a ten-page service business site.
Days 1–2: plan
A short call, a page list, a one-line goal for every page, and the Wix plan decision. You create the Wix account and invite us as collaborators.
Days 3–6: design
Home page first, shared for feedback on your phone. Once approved, the inner pages follow the same system of fonts, colours and sections.
Days 7–9: apps and SEO
Forms, Bookings or Stores, WhatsApp button, titles and descriptions, alt text, redirects, Search Console and analytics.
Days 10–12: test and launch
Checks on low-end Android phones and a laptop, form tests, domain connection, publish, and a walkthrough video for your team.
The biggest source of delay is content: photos, service descriptions and prices. Send them early and the timeline holds. Our website timeline guide breaks this down for other kinds of sites.
Mobile-first Wix design for Indian customers
Most of your visitors will arrive on an Android phone, often mid-range, often on mobile data. A Wix website designer should design for that screen first and treat the desktop layout as the second view.
In practice that means large tap targets for call and WhatsApp buttons, short sections, compressed images, no autoplay video banners, and text that stays readable without zooming. Wix creates a mobile view from the desktop layout, but that automatic version often stacks elements oddly or hides important buttons below long images. We edit the mobile view section by section and test on actual budget phones, not only in a browser preview.
Hindi or bilingual content is possible too. If your customers read Hindi, we can build a second language version from copy you supply or approve. The same logic applies to regional languages; we set up the structure and you confirm the translation.
Who owns a Wix website built by a Wix website designer?
You should own the Wix account, the premium plan, the domain and all the content from the first day. The designer joins as a collaborator and can be removed at any time.
On Wix, ownership works differently from a self-hosted site. You own the account and everything you put into it, but the platform and its code belong to Wix. Practically, that means your text, images, product data and customer list are yours to keep, while the design stays on Wix. Keep your own copies of important content and product exports; we hand these over at launch.
Buy the domain in your own name at a registrar you control, or through Wix in your own account. Either way, the login details should be yours. If a past designer holds your account, ask them to transfer the site to your Wix account; if that stalls, our guide for when a developer leaves midway lists the next steps.
Will a Wix site show up in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers?
It can, if the pages answer questions clearly. AI search tools quote short, factual passages, so the same page structure that helps Google also helps them.
We write each service page with a direct answer near the top, a few question-style headings, and specific details such as areas served, timings and prices from your own price list. Wix's SEO page also mentions an AI visibility tool that tracks mentions across large language models, which is useful for watching the trend. For a deeper approach, our AI Overview optimisation guide explains what influences citations.
- Answer the main question in the first two sentences
- Use headings phrased as the questions customers ask
- Add FAQs with complete, stand-alone answers
- Keep business name, address and phone identical everywhere
Wix website launch checklist
Run through this list before you press Publish, or ask your Wix website designer to show you each item done. It takes twenty minutes and prevents most post-launch problems.
- Custom domain connected and HTTPS working
- Every page has its own SEO title and description
- Mobile view checked on at least two real phones
- Contact form tested; enquiries reach the right inbox
- WhatsApp and click-to-call buttons work on mobile
- Old URLs redirected if this is a redesign
- Search Console verified and sitemap submitted
- Store or Bookings tested with a real payment
- Privacy policy and, for stores, shipping and refund pages
- Unused apps removed to keep pages light
Worked example: a yoga studio in Pune hires a Wix website designer
Here is a hypothetical case to show how the decisions play out. Say a two-teacher yoga studio in Pune wants online class bookings, a page per class type, and Hindi and English content. Most of its visitors arrive from Instagram, on phones.
The plan: eight pages, Wix Editor rather than Studio because the owner will update the timetable weekly, and Wix Bookings for classes with capacity limits and WhatsApp reminders. The owner picks the lowest plan that includes scheduling. Design and setup would start at ₹10,000; the Wix plan is billed separately by Wix.
What we would push back on: a full-screen video banner (slow on mobile data), and a separate page for every single class time (thin content). What we would add: an FAQ block on the home page, a Google Business Profile that matches the address and hours, and a yoga studio page structure that answers what beginners search for. If the studio later opens three branches and wants an app, that is when a custom build becomes worth discussing.
