Why do businesses move from Wix to a custom website?
Usually because the site has grown past what the builder does comfortably. Wix, Squarespace and Google Sites are good for getting online fast; the friction appears later, when the business wants more speed, more control or lower long-term cost.
The common triggers we hear: pages feel slow on mobile because the builder loads its own scripts on every page; the yearly plan keeps rising while the site stays the same; a needed feature, such as a quote calculator, a dealer login or a custom booking rule, is not available as an app; the team wants hundreds of location or service pages generated from data, which builders make tedious; or the owner simply wants to own the code instead of renting it.
A Wix to custom website move answers all of those at once, but it is a rebuild, not a button. Knowing that up front sets the right expectations for time and budget.
- Mobile pages load slowly despite few images
- Plan renewals keep climbing
- A key feature needs custom logic
- Scaling to many SEO pages is painful
- You want code and hosting in your own name
When should you stay on Wix instead?
Stay if the site works for you. A five-page site that brings steady enquiries, which you enjoy editing yourself, does not need a migration. Spending on a move there only makes sense if a specific problem, like speed or a missing feature, is costing you customers.
Also stay, for now, if you are mid-season. A restaurant before Diwali, a school during admissions or a store before a sale should not switch platforms in its busiest weeks. Plan the move for a quieter month.
A middle path exists too: keep the builder for the main site and add a custom subdomain for the feature it cannot handle, such as a booking portal. That is cheaper than a full Wix to custom website move and buys time. When the subdomain starts doing most of the work, migrate the rest.
What can and cannot be exported from Wix, Squarespace and Google Sites?
The design and underlying code cannot be exported from Wix; the site has to be rebuilt elsewhere. Content, however, can almost always be recovered, some of it through export features and the rest by careful copying.
Wix
No site export. Wix Stores products and contacts can be exported as CSV files from the dashboard. Blog posts can be pulled through the blog’s RSS feed or copied, and images downloaded from the media manager. Page text is copied across.
Squarespace
Offers an export in WordPress format that covers pages and blog posts, with some content types left out, and product lists can be exported as CSV. Design and custom CSS do not carry over as a usable site.
Google Sites
Simple pages with text, images and embedded Google files. Content is copied manually; the gain from moving is usually control over titles, descriptions and structured data.
Whatever the source, we build a content inventory first: every page, post, product, image and form, with its URL. Nothing gets forgotten because nothing is done from memory.
How much does a Wix to custom website migration cost?
Price it like a new site of the same size, plus migration work. A small business site of up to 100 pages starts at ₹10,000 (US$150) and takes 1–2 weeks. Sites with hundreds of blog posts or location pages start at ₹20,000. Stores start at ₹50,000. Booking engines or member areas that replace builder apps start at ₹60,000.
The migration-specific lines are the URL inventory and redirect map, content transfer, domain and email handling, and post-launch monitoring in Search Console. On a small site these are modest; on a site with years of blog posts or a large product catalogue they are a meaningful share of the effort.
Think also about the running cost after the move. Instead of a builder plan you pay for hosting and domain directly, and optional care from ₹8,000/mo once the two free months end. For a static site, hosting is often very cheap. We list both sides so you can judge the change honestly. More cost detail sits on website developer cost.
Protecting your Google rankings during a Wix to custom website move
Rankings are tied to URLs. If an address that Google knows starts returning a 404 error, the traffic it earned disappears. A redirect map prevents that by sending each old URL permanently (a 301 redirect) to its closest new page.
We build the inventory from three sources, because each one misses something: the Pages report and performance data in Google Search Console, the old sitemap, and a crawl of the live site. Builder URL patterns get special attention. Wix blog posts usually live under /post/, Wix Stores products under /product-page/, and Squarespace uses its own collection paths. Where the new URL can stay identical, we keep it identical; where it changes, it gets a redirect.
Titles, meta descriptions, headings and internal links are carried over for pages that already rank, and improved only where they were weak. After switchover, a short dip in traffic can happen while Google recrawls, which is normal; lasting drops almost always trace back to a missing redirect. Nobody can guarantee rankings through a migration, but a complete map removes the most common cause of loss.
Moving your domain and business email off Wix
You have two choices for the domain: keep it registered where it is and change its DNS to point at the new hosting, or transfer it to a registrar in your own name. Transfers need the domain lock removed and an authorisation code, and registrars generally block transfers for about 60 days after a domain is registered or last transferred, so check the dates before planning.
Email is where builder moves most often go wrong. If your business email runs through a mailbox you bought alongside the builder plan, its MX records must survive the DNS change and its billing must be sorted out separately. We list every DNS record before touching anything, copy them to the new DNS, and only then switch.
Switchover happens at a quiet hour. We lower the DNS time-to-live a day early, launch the new site, confirm SSL is active and redirects work, then check email delivery in both directions. You keep the builder plan active for a short overlap until everything is verified, then cancel it on your own terms.
Moving a Wix or Squarespace store to a store you own
Product catalogues move well; order history and payment setups need more thought. We export products to CSV, clean the data (titles, descriptions, variants, prices, stock and images), and import it into the new store, then check a sample of products by hand.
Customer lists move as CSV too. Passwords cannot be moved between platforms, so customers set a new one on first login; we write a friendly email explaining this. Past orders are kept as an archive file for your records and returns, rather than forced into the new system.
Checkout is rebuilt with UPI and card payments through a provider account in your name, with GST details on invoices where you need them. Product URLs follow the redirect map, so a customer clicking an old Google result or social post still lands on the right product. Store moves sit on the ecommerce plan from ₹50,000; see ecommerce development for the store side.
Carrying blog posts, images and media across
Blogs hold years of search traffic, so they deserve careful handling. Every post keeps its title, body, headings, images, publish date, author and category, and its old address redirects to the new one.
Images are downloaded at original quality, renamed sensibly, given alt text where it was missing, and converted to modern formats so they load faster than before. Embedded videos and maps are re-embedded. Internal links inside posts are rewritten to point at new URLs directly, so readers and Google do not bounce through redirects.
If the blog has hundreds of posts, we script the transfer rather than copying by hand, then review a sample for formatting problems such as broken lists or oversized images. Thin or outdated posts can be merged during the move, with redirects, if you want to tidy up. Our blog website page explains the platform choice for blogs.
Replacing Wix apps: forms, bookings, members and chat
Builder sites often rely on marketplace apps for anything beyond pages. Each one needs an equivalent on the new site, so we list them during the inventory and decide what replaces each.
Contact and quote forms
Rebuilt with spam protection, sending to email and, if you like, WhatsApp or a Google Sheet.
Bookings
A simple enquiry form, an embedded calendar tool, or a custom booking system when you have real rules such as staff, rooms or deposits.
Members and gated content
Custom logins and access rules; builder member passwords cannot be moved, so members reset theirs.
Live chat and pop-ups
A WhatsApp click-to-chat button replaces most chat widgets for Indian audiences, at a fraction of the page weight.
Analytics
Google Analytics and Search Console are reconnected on day one so reporting continues without a gap.
Which platform should you move to after Wix?
Decide by who edits the site and how often. The goal of a Wix to custom website move is ownership and control, so the new stack should not recreate the old limits.
If the developer handles occasional edits and you want maximum speed and low hosting cost, a static site built with a framework such as Astro is the strongest option. If your staff will publish posts or change pages every week, WordPress with a light theme, or a headless CMS feeding a static front end, gives them a familiar editor. If the site needs logins, bookings or dashboards, a custom web app is the clean path.
We explain the trade-off in the quote rather than defaulting to one tool. Moving from Wix to a heavy WordPress theme with thirty plugins would swap one set of problems for another; see custom-coded vs template sites for the longer comparison.
Will a custom website be faster than Wix?
Usually, yes, because a custom site loads only what each page needs. Builders ship general-purpose scripts that support every feature any site might use; a custom build ships the code for your features alone.
We measure before and after. Before the move we record Core Web Vitals from PageSpeed Insights and, where there is enough traffic, the field data Google already holds. After the move we compare the same pages. The gains come from compressed and correctly sized images, fewer fonts, no unused scripts, and HTML that renders before JavaScript arrives.
Speed matters most on the phones your customers carry. We test every migrated site on a budget Android phone on a throttled connection, because a site that feels fine on office Wi-Fi can still be sluggish on mobile data in a smaller town.
Wix to custom website switchover checklist
Switchover day should be boring. That happens when everything below is ticked before the DNS changes.
- Content inventory complete: every page, post, product and form listed
- Redirect map covers every URL from Search Console, sitemap and crawl
- New site reviewed on staging on phone and desktop
- All DNS records, including email, copied to the new DNS
- DNS time-to-live lowered a day ahead
- Forms tested and delivering to the right inbox
- Analytics and Search Console connected on the new site
- Builder plan kept active until email and redirects are confirmed
- New sitemap submitted and old URLs spot-checked for 301s
For two to four weeks after the move, we check Search Console for crawl errors and 404s and fix any stragglers. That is included in the two free months of maintenance.
Worked example: an interior designer’s Wix site with a blog
This is a hypothetical example to show the process, not a client story.
An interior designer has a Wix site with twelve pages, sixty blog posts about home makeovers, a portfolio gallery and a consultation booking app. The blog brings most enquiries, the site feels slow on phones, and the yearly plan has gone up again. Business email was bought alongside the Wix plan.
We would quote the static plan from ₹10,000, with lines for blog transfer, the redirect map, and replacing the booking app with an enquiry form linked to a calendar tool. Week one: inventory from Search Console and a crawl, sixty posts scripted across with images converted, portfolio rebuilt as a fast gallery. Week two: redirects for every /post/ address, forms, email records copied, staging review. Switchover on a Sunday morning, Search Console monitored for a month, and the Wix plan cancelled once email and redirects are confirmed.
Wix to custom website moves for businesses across India
A migration needs no site visit: access to the old builder dashboard, the domain account and Search Console is enough, and we share every step on a staging link and WhatsApp.
We work with owners in New Delhi, Nashik, Rajkot, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Shimla, Siliguri, Aurangabad, Tirupati and Cuttack, among many other cities, plus overseas owners in Canada, Australia and Singapore who started on a builder and outgrew it.
Domain aur hosting aapke naam par hote hain, code aapka hota hai, aur saal-dar-saal builder ka plan bharne ki zaroorat nahi rehti.
