What are hotel SEO services, and what should they achieve?
Hotel SEO services are the work of making a hotel, resort or homestay visible on Google in the places travellers compare and book, and making the property's own website the preferred place to complete that booking. The measure of success is direct bookings, not rankings for their own sake.
A hotel's search problem is different from most businesses. When a traveller types your property's name, Google often shows your Business Profile with a panel of booking options, several OTA links, and your own site somewhere among them. The guest has already chosen you; the question is who collects the booking. Much of what hotel SEO services do is make sure that at this moment your official site is present, fast and trustworthy.
The second job is earlier in the journey: being found by travellers who have not yet chosen a property. They search a destination plus “hotel”, “resort” or “homestay”, read guides and look at maps. Destination content, strong Maps presence and genuine reviews bring those travellers to you before an OTA does.
- Brand searches: guest already knows you; win the booking
- Destination searches: guest is choosing; win the shortlist
- Planning searches: guest is researching; become the useful source
Direct bookings vs OTA commissions: how do the numbers work?
Every booking that moves from an OTA to your own website saves the commission agreed in your OTA contract, minus what the direct booking costs you: booking engine fees, payment charges and your marketing spend. For most properties, direct bookings are the most profitable bookings they take.
A simple way to see it: take your average booking value, multiply by your OTA commission rate, and you have what each OTA booking costs to acquire. Multiply by the number of guests who searched your name and still booked through an OTA, and you have the amount hotel SEO services are trying to win back. You do not need to eliminate OTA bookings for this to matter; moving a modest share of name searches to direct usually covers the cost of the work.
There are softer gains too. Direct guests share their email and phone with you, not with an intermediary, so you can welcome them properly, handle special requests and invite them back. You control the cancellation terms and the upsell of meals, transfers and experiences. Before offering lower rates on your own site, check the rate parity terms in your OTA contracts; instead of discounts, many properties offer direct-booking perks such as breakfast, late checkout or a free airport pickup.
How do hotels appear in Google's hotel search results?
Hotels appear in four places on Google: the Business Profile panel and Maps, the hotel booking module showing prices from different sites, paid hotel ads within that module, and the ordinary organic results. Hotel SEO services mostly work on the first, second and fourth; the third is advertising.
The Business Profile is where name searches land. It shows photos, reviews, amenities and location, and for hotels it includes booking options. The booking module lists rates from OTAs and, when connected, from your own site. Organic results below that show your website, OTA pages about your property, and travel guides.
Each surface needs different work. The profile needs accurate details, real photos and a steady flow of reviews. The booking module needs your rates connected, usually through your booking engine. Organic results need a fast, well-structured website with room pages, destination content and schema. Neglecting any one of these leaves space for an OTA to take the booking.
The table further down maps each Google surface to what it shows, how you get there and what it costs.
What are Google's free booking links, and how does a hotel get them?
Free booking links are listings in Google's hotel booking module that show your rate and link to your booking page, with no charge from Google. Google's Hotel Center help says there is no cost for clicks on free booking links, that Google collects no payment for their placement, and that no one can pay for a higher ranking within them.
Google says these links are ranked using signals including user preference, the value offered, landing page experience and the historical accuracy of the prices provided. That last point is important: if the rate Google shows does not match what the guest sees on your booking page, your links can suffer. Price accuracy depends on your booking engine's connection, so choose one that sends rates reliably.
For most independent hotels, the practical route is through the reservation system. Google's help notes that hotel owners using a reservation system may already be connected through their provider, who can set up booking links. We check whether your booking engine is a Google connectivity partner, confirm your property is matched to the right Business Profile, and make sure the landing page is fast and shows the same price. See Google's free booking links help for the official detail.
How should a hotel or homestay set up its Google Business Profile?
Use your exact property name, choose the most specific lodging category (hotel, resort, guest house, bed and breakfast and so on), place the pin at the entrance guests drive to, fill in amenities, upload recent real photos of every room type and link the website button to your own site, not an OTA page.
A quirk worth knowing: Google's Business Profile guidelines list indoor lodging such as hotels and motels among the businesses that should not provide opening hours. Leave hours blank for the property itself; if you run a restaurant or spa open to the public, it may have its own details. Check-in and check-out times belong in the profile's lodging details and on your website.
Photos carry unusual weight in hotel decisions. Replace stock images and old photos with current shots of each room type, bathrooms, the view, common areas, food and the approach road. Guests who arrive to find something different from the photos tend to say so in reviews. Keep the phone number to one the front desk answers, and set up messaging only if someone will reply promptly.
If someone else controls the profile or it has been suspended, our suspended Business Profile guide covers recovery.
Which hotel schema markup should a hotel website use?
Mark your property up with the most specific schema.org lodging type that fits, such as Hotel, Resort, BedAndBreakfast or Hostel, all of which sit under LodgingBusiness. Include the name, address, geo-coordinates, phone, photos, check-in and check-out times, amenities, and price range, and describe room types with HotelRoom where you have room pages.
Google's LocalBusiness documentation asks site owners to use the most specific subtype possible, so a heritage resort should not be marked up simply as LocalBusiness. Use amenityFeature to list facilities such as pool, parking, Wi-Fi or airport shuttle only if they genuinely exist. Add starRating only when it reflects an official classification the property actually holds, never a self-awarded rating.
Structured data does not directly create your hotel panel or booking module entries; those come from your Business Profile and booking engine connection. What the markup does is help search engines and AI systems understand the property's facts consistently. We generate the JSON-LD from the same data as the visible page, validate it with the Rich Results Test and watch Search Console for errors after each change.
How do you make the direct booking path fast enough to beat OTAs?
Make every room page load quickly on a phone, show real photos, inclusions and the policies guests care about, and open your booking engine at the right dates and room in one tap. OTAs win many bookings simply because their apps are faster and clearer than hotel websites.
Common problems we fix: huge image sliders that take seconds to appear on mobile data, a “Book now” button that opens a generic engine page where guests must start over, booking engines embedded in slow iframes, and room pages that hide the price behind a form. Each of these gives the guest a reason to go back to the OTA app they already trust.
Tracking matters as much as speed. When the booking engine sits on a different domain, GA4 often records the booking as coming from the booking engine itself rather than from Google. We set up cross-domain measurement where the engine supports it, so you can see how many direct bookings began with a search. If you run your own engine or need a custom one, our booking system developer page covers that build.
- Room pages under two taps from the homepage
- Real photos, inclusions and cancellation terms on the page
- Book button opens the engine at the selected room and dates
- Direct-booking perks stated clearly, within your OTA contract terms
- Cross-domain tracking from search to confirmed booking
What destination content should a hotel publish?
Publish content that answers what travellers ask while planning a trip to your area and that only someone local can answer well: how to reach you from the nearest airport, railway station and highway, what to do nearby by season, which local events are worth timing a stay around, and practical tips on weather, permits or road conditions.
Destination pages bring travellers who have not chosen a hotel yet. Someone reading your honest guide to the best time to visit, or your walking route to a nearby waterfall, meets your property before they meet an OTA's list. That only works if the content is genuinely useful and specific; generic “top ten places to visit” lists copied across hundreds of hotel sites help nobody.
Your staff know things no travel portal does: the road that floods in the monsoon, the café locals prefer, the quiet hour at the temple. We interview you or your manager, draft pages from that knowledge, and link each one to the relevant rooms or packages. Facts that change, such as entry rules or permit requirements, should link to the official source rather than being copied.
- How to reach: airport, railway, road, last-mile options
- Seasonal guides: what the weather and crowds are like each season
- Nearby experiences with distances and time needed
- Event pages for festivals and fairs that fill local hotels
- Stay ideas: weekend plans, family trips, workation stays
Do hotels need multilingual pages for SEO?
If a meaningful share of your guests speak another language, yes. Travellers often search and book in their own language, and a page in that language with correct hreflang tags can appear in their results where an English-only page would not. Start with the languages your booking data already shows, not a long list.
Google's documentation on localised versions says you can declare language versions in HTML link tags, HTTP headers or the sitemap, that each version must list itself as well as all other versions, and that x-default can mark the fallback page. Missing return links are a common reason hotel language versions are ignored.
For Indian properties, the useful languages depend on the destination. A beach property may see guests from Europe and Russia; a hill station may see mostly domestic families searching in Hindi; a pilgrimage town may benefit from Hindi and a regional language. We build the language structure and switcher; you supply or approve the translated copy, because machine translation of room descriptions and policies tends to produce awkward, sometimes wrong, text. Our international SEO services page goes deeper on the technical setup.
How do reviews affect hotel SEO and direct bookings?
Reviews shape how your Business Profile appears, what travellers believe about you and whether they book direct. A recent flow of detailed reviews, with thoughtful replies from the property, makes guests more comfortable booking on your own site rather than through the OTA where they have seen your reviews.
Google's Maps content policy prohibits offering incentives such as payment, discounts or free services in exchange for reviews, and it bans selectively asking only happy guests. So no free dessert for a five-star review, and no review request only to guests who said they enjoyed their stay. Ask every guest, for example in the checkout message or a follow-up on WhatsApp, with a direct review link.
Replies matter as much as ratings. Thank guests for specifics, fix and acknowledge genuine problems, and never share booking details or personal information in a public reply. OTA reviews also influence decisions, so keep replying there too; but only your Google reviews sit directly on the profile that guests see when they search your name.
Hotel SEO services for homestays and small properties
For a homestay or guest house with a handful of rooms, the priorities are a complete Business Profile, steady reviews, a simple fast website with one page per room type, a clear way to book or enquire directly and a few genuinely local guides. A large content programme is rarely worth it.
Small properties often cannot justify an expensive booking engine. Some take direct enquiries on WhatsApp or by phone, confirm availability manually and collect an advance by UPI or bank transfer. That can work well if the website makes it obvious and replies are quick; guests comparing with an OTA will not wait a day for an answer. A WhatsApp enquiry flow or a lightweight booking form can bridge the gap.
Homestays often win on things hotels cannot offer: home-cooked meals, a host who knows the valley, a farm, a view. Put those in words and photos on the site and the Business Profile, and in replies to reviews. Families and solo travellers often search for “homestay near [place]” precisely because they want that, so say plainly what makes yours different.
SEO for hotel groups and properties in several destinations
A hotel group needs one domain with a strong page for each property, a Business Profile per property, and destination content specific to each location, rather than a separate small website per hotel. One domain concentrates authority, simplifies maintenance and lets guests discover your other properties.
Each property page should work as a complete hotel website in its own right: rooms, amenities, photos, location, reviews, its own schema and a booking button that opens the engine for that property. Shared content such as brand story, loyalty benefits and group policies can live at the top level.
Groups also face internal competition. Two of your properties in the same city should target different searches, such as one near the railway station for business travellers and one by the lake for couples, so they do not fight over the same keywords. Our multi-location SEO page covers listing management at scale.
Which technical SEO issues hurt hotel websites most?
The biggest are slow mobile pages caused by heavy images and videos, room descriptions copied word for word from OTA listings (or the reverse), booking engines in iframes that search engines cannot read, missing room pages, and old package or offer pages still indexed long after they expired.
Duplicate descriptions are an underestimated problem. If your room text is identical on your site and on six OTAs, Google has little reason to prefer your version. We write fresh descriptions for your own site and, if you like, supply shorter different versions for OTA listings. Expired offers should redirect to the current packages page rather than show a dead promotion.
Core Web Vitals deserve attention because many travellers browse on phones, often on patchy connections in transit. We compress and properly size images, lazy-load galleries, limit third-party widgets and test on a mid-range Android phone. For 360-degree tours and videos, we load them only when the guest taps, so the page itself stays fast.
How much do hotel SEO services cost in India?
With BtechWaleTech, hotel SEO services start at ₹10,000/mo a month. The quote depends on the number of properties, room types and languages, the destination content planned and whether the booking path needs development. A six-room homestay needs much less than a three-property resort group with two language versions.
In the wider market, quotes vary widely, and the difference usually comes from scope: whether content is written for you, whether booking engine and tracking work is included, whether OTA listing management is part of it, and how often reporting happens. The useful comparison is not price alone but what share of your name searches ends in a direct booking before and after.
One-time costs are separate. A new hotel or homestay website of up to 100 pages starts at ₹10,000 (US$150). A larger multilingual or multi-property site starts at ₹20,000. A custom booking tool starts at ₹60,000, and a guest app for Android and iOS at ₹40,000, though most properties do not need an app. Maintenance after the two free months starts at ₹8,000/mo.
All figures are starting prices on our pricing page; every quote is itemised and nothing is billed before written approval.
Will AI trip planners recommend my hotel?
They can, when your property's facts are clear and consistent across your website, Business Profile, OTAs and reviews. Travellers increasingly ask assistants to plan a trip and suggest where to stay, and the answers draw on sources that describe properties specifically and consistently.
Help assistants describe you correctly. State in text on your website what kind of property you are, where exactly you are, who you suit (families, couples, pilgrims, trekkers), what is included and what is nearby. Keep names, addresses and phone numbers identical everywhere. Reviews that mention specifics, such as the view, the food or the host, give assistants concrete details to repeat.
There is no way to pay for inclusion in AI answers, and anyone promising placement is guessing. We check that AI crawlers can reach your pages, that important information is not locked inside images or a booking iframe, and that schema matches what the page shows. Our AI Overview optimisation page explains the wider approach.
Worked example: hotel SEO services for an 18-room riverside hotel
Say a hypothetical 18-room hotel near Rishikesh gets most of its bookings through two OTAs. Its Business Profile shows old photos, the website button points to an OTA page, room details are in one long page copied from an OTA listing, and the booking engine opens a generic calendar. Guests from Europe and Israel stay regularly, and domestic weekenders arrive from Delhi.
Month one: the profile is corrected, photos refreshed, the website link moved to the hotel's own site, and the booking engine provider confirms the connection for free booking links with matching rates. Month two: separate pages for each room type with fresh descriptions, a book button that opens the engine at that room, Hotel schema, cross-domain tracking and direct-booking perks agreed with the owner. Month three onward: guides on reaching the hotel from Dehradun airport and Haridwar station, seasonal rafting and yoga guides written from the manager's knowledge, a Hindi version of key pages and a review request in every checkout message.
This is a hypothetical sequence, not a claimed result. How many bookings move direct depends on the property's reviews, prices, OTA terms and how quickly enquiries are answered. The example shows the order hotel SEO services should follow: fix the moment of booking first, then widen the funnel.
Hotel SEO services checklist and red flags
Check these points on your own property before hiring anyone, then use the gaps to judge proposals. A good provider will start with your brand search results and booking path, not with a list of blog posts.
- Search your property's name on a phone: is your own site visible and bookable?
- Business Profile website button points to your site, not an OTA
- Booking engine connected for free booking links with accurate rates
- A separate page for each room type with fresh descriptions
- Hotel schema matching what the page shows
- Destination guides written from real local knowledge
- Language versions with hreflang for the markets you actually serve
- Review requests to every guest, replies to every review
- Red flag: promised “number one on Google” or guaranteed bookings
- Red flag: fake reviews or review incentives
- Red flag: the provider owning your domain, profile or booking data
