Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?
Your Google Business Profile was suspended because Google's systems or reviewers decided the listing, or the account managing it, did not follow the Business Profile guidelines. Google's help page says it may suspend or disable profiles that don't follow those guidelines, and that a restricted account can cause every profile it manages to be suspended.
Google rarely names the exact rule in the email, so the first job is detective work. In India, the same handful of causes come up again and again: keywords added to the business name, a shop that moved and edited its address without proof, a home or virtual office address shown to customers, several listings for one business, and a burst of edits made in one sitting by an owner or an over-eager marketer.
A Google Business Profile suspended for one of these reasons can usually be fixed. A profile suspended because the business is not eligible at all, such as an online-only seller with no customer-facing location and no delivery or visits, generally cannot. Knowing which group you are in before you appeal saves weeks.
Hard suspension, soft suspension or account restriction: which one do you have?
Check two things: can customers still see your listing on Google Maps, and can you still manage it? The answers tell you which kind of suspension you face, and that decides what the appeal needs to prove.
Hard suspension (listing removed)
Your shop no longer appears on Maps or in the local results, reviews are hidden and customers searching your name find nothing. Marketers call this a hard suspension; it usually means Google doubts the business itself, its address or its eligibility.
Soft suspension (you lost control)
The listing still shows to the public, but your dashboard says it is suspended or you cannot edit it. This usually points to a problem with the managing account or a recent edit rather than the business.
Account restriction
Every profile under one Google account is suspended at once, often because the account itself was flagged. Google's help page confirms that a restricted account causes the profiles it manages to be suspended, so the appeal starts with the account.
Disabled profile
Google may also disable a profile, which removes it from management. The appeals tool shows the status and the stated reason next to the listing.
Write down the exact wording shown in your dashboard and in Google's email. You will need it when filling the appeal and when checking which guideline to fix.
Google Business Profile suspended today: what to do in the first 24 hours
Stop editing, do not create a new listing, and collect information. Most self-inflicted damage after a suspension comes from panicked changes made in the first day.
- Take screenshots of the dashboard status, Google's email and your listing as it looked (from your phone's recent searches or cached images if available)
- Note every change made in the past month: name, address, phone, category, hours, website link, new managers
- Do not delete the profile; deleting throws away its reviews and history
- Do not create a replacement profile; Google's help page says not to create a new profile for the same business while an appeal is under review
- Ask anyone with manager access, including past agencies or staff, what they changed
- Gather documents that show your business name and exact address, and check they match each other
- Photograph your signboard, entrance and interior in daylight
Only after this should you start correcting the profile. If your website is also showing problems in search, keep that separate for now; our guide to a website not showing on Google covers that side.
Keyword-stuffed business names: the most common trigger in India
If your listing name contains words that are not on your signboard, fix that first. Google's guidelines say the name should reflect the real-world name used consistently on the storefront, website and stationery, without marketing taglines, service descriptions, locations or phone numbers.
Names such as “Sharma Dental Clinic – Best Dentist in Pune for Root Canal and Implants” or “Gupta Packers & Movers Delhi NCR Lowest Price” are the classic pattern. They often rank well for a few weeks, which is why marketers keep recommending them, and then the listing disappears. Competitors can also suggest an edit that flags the name, so a keyword-stuffed name is fragile even before Google's own systems catch it.
Correct the name to exactly what your signboard, GST registration and letterhead say. If your legal name differs from your trading name, use the trading name on the board, and keep a document that links the two, such as a GST certificate listing the trade name. If your signboard itself carries keywords, Google judges the real-world name, so be ready to prove that it has been in use.
Then move the keywords where they belong: your services list, your description, your website's service pages and the questions your customers ask. That is where our local SEO work focuses.
Suspended after changing your address or moving the map pin
Address changes are a frequent trigger because a sudden move looks, to Google, like someone hijacking a listing. If your Google Business Profile got suspended right after you edited the address, the appeal must prove the new location is real and yours.
Indian businesses move for ordinary reasons: a lease ends, a clinic shifts to a bigger floor, a shop relocates across the market. The trouble is that many owners change the address, the phone number and the category on the same day, sometimes from a new Google account. Each change on its own is normal; together they look suspicious.
Before appealing, make sure the new address is written the way it appears on your documents, with the same building name, floor, road and PIN code. Put the pin exactly on the entrance, not on the middle of the road or the building next door. Update your website's contact page to the same format. Collect a document with the new address: an updated GST registration, a shop and establishment licence, an electricity bill or a rent agreement in the business name.
If the move happened long before the suspension and the old listing still exists somewhere, you may also have a duplicate problem, covered below.
Virtual office, co-working desk or home address: is your business eligible?
Google's guidelines say virtual offices that don't operate from that address are not eligible, and co-working spaces qualify only with clear signage, customer access during stated hours and staff present. Home-based businesses that visit customers should set up as a service-area business and hide the address.
This is where many Indian consultants, tutors, CA practices, interior designers and online service sellers get stuck. A GST registration obtained at a virtual-office address does not make that address eligible for Google Maps. If nobody receives customers there during business hours, the listing is at risk no matter how many documents you hold.
- Customers visit you at the address during stated hours: show the address and keep proper signage
- You travel to customers (plumbers, pest control, home tutors, repair services): set service areas and hide the address
- You run from home but meet clients elsewhere: service-area setup, address hidden
- You only sell online with courier delivery and no visits: a Google Business Profile is generally not the right tool; focus on your website and search results
- You rent a co-working desk: eligible only if customers can reach staff there during your hours and the space shows your signage
If your business model makes a Maps listing risky, a solid website and search presence matter more. Our comparison of a Google Business Profile versus a website sets out what each can do on its own.
Duplicate listings and multiple profiles for one business
Google's guidelines say not to create more than one profile for each location, in one account or several. Duplicates are one of the quieter reasons a Google Business Profile ends up suspended, because they are often created by someone other than the owner.
Typical sources: an old listing from before a move, a listing a staff member created on a personal account, one made by a previous marketing agency, a user-suggested place added by a customer, or separate listings for “Clinic” and “Dr. Name” where the rules for practitioners were not followed. Google allows individual practitioners, such as doctors or lawyers, to have their own profile only in specific conditions, including being contactable directly at the verified location during stated hours.
Search Google Maps for your phone number, your old and new addresses and variations of your name. List every listing you find. For each one, decide whether it should be merged, marked as moved, claimed and closed, or left if it is a legitimate separate practitioner or department. Handle duplicates before submitting your appeal, so the reviewer sees a tidy picture.
Businesses with several branches should also check that each branch uses its own local phone number and exact address; our multi-location SEO page explains how to structure that.
Other reasons a Google Business Profile gets suspended
Beyond names, addresses and duplicates, look at the category, the website link, the hours, the managers and the reviews. Any of these can tip a borderline listing into suspension.
Wrong or stretched category
Choosing “Hospital” for a small clinic or “Travel agency” for a taxi driver makes the listing look misleading. Pick the primary category that describes what you are, not what ranks.
Website link that does not match
Linking to a marketplace page, a social profile of another business or a site with a different name and address weakens trust. Link to your own site with matching details.
Unrealistic hours
Listing 24 hours when you are not staffed around the clock is a common flag. Show the hours customers can actually reach you.
Unknown managers
A former employee or agency with owner access can make edits you never see. Review users and remove anyone you do not recognise.
Review manipulation
Buying reviews, offering discounts for five stars or asking staff to post reviews breaks Google's content policies and can draw attention to the whole listing.
What proof to submit for a suspended Google Business Profile in India
Submit documents that show your business name and the exact address on the profile. Google's appeals help lists official business registration, a business licence, tax certificates and utility bills as acceptable evidence, and it says to check that the business name and address on any document match the profile.
For Indian businesses, that usually translates into the following, in rough order of strength:
- GST registration certificate showing the trade name and principal or additional place of business
- Shop and establishment licence or trade licence from the municipal body
- Udyam registration certificate, if the address matches the listing
- Electricity, landline or broadband bill in the business name at that address
- Clinic, pharmacy, FSSAI or other sector licences where applicable
- Photos of the permanent signboard, the entrance with the street visible, and the interior during working hours
Mismatches sink appeals. If your GST certificate shows “Sharma Enterprises” and your board says “Sharma Sweets”, include a document or photo that links them. If your bill is in the landlord's name, add the rent agreement. Google's help page also notes that once you open the evidence form you must submit it within 60 minutes, so prepare everything in one folder first.
How to fill the Google Business Profile reinstatement appeal, step by step
Fix the profile first, then appeal once, carefully, from the account that owns the listing. The appeal is not the place to argue; it is the place to show that the business is real and that the listing now follows the guidelines.
- Sign in with the Google account that owns or manages the profile and open the Business Profile appeals tool
- Select the suspended profile and read the violation reason Google shows
- Start the appeal and confirm the profile's current details are correct
- When asked for evidence, upload the matching documents and photos you prepared, within the 60-minute window
- In any free-text box, explain briefly what was wrong and what you changed, in plain English
- Submit, note the date, and do not submit repeat appeals or keep editing while it is under review
A good explanation is short and factual: “The name previously included service keywords. We have corrected it to match our signboard and GST certificate. Our shop has operated at this address since 2019; the attached licence and electricity bill show the same address.” Replace the details with your own true facts.
Video verification after a suspension: what to film
If Google asks you to verify by video, film one continuous clip that proves location, ownership and management access. Google's verification help lists these three points and suggests showing outside signs or nearby landmarks, your products or branded equipment, and access to staff-only areas or items such as a cash counter or storeroom.
Practical tips for Indian shops and clinics: shoot in daylight, start outside with the street name board or a well-known neighbouring shop in frame, walk up to your signboard, go inside without cutting, show the billing counter or reception, open a staff-only room with your key, and show a non-sensitive document such as a licence on the wall. Keep it steady and do not narrate anything that is untrue.
Service-area businesses without a shopfront can show their branded vehicle, tools and equipment, and business paperwork. Google's help says verification typically takes up to five business days after submission. A good video can clear doubts that documents alone cannot.
How long does it take to fix a suspended Google Business Profile?
Plan for the whole process to take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Your own preparation takes one to three days if documents are ready; Google's review time varies and Google does not publish a fixed deadline for appeals.
While you wait, keep the business visible elsewhere: make sure your website shows your address, phone and WhatsApp button clearly, share your website link with regular customers, and keep answering phone enquiries. Do not re-appeal just because a week has passed.
If the appeal is rejected, read the reason carefully. Often the evidence did not match the profile, or a trigger was never fixed. Correct that gap and use whatever next step Google offers in the appeals tool or through Business Profile support. If the business is genuinely ineligible at that address, the honest answer is to change the setup, for example to a service-area profile, rather than keep appealing.
After reinstatement: reviews, rankings and what comes back
When a suspended Google Business Profile is reinstated, the listing, reviews and photos usually return with it, though rankings can take time to settle. Treat the first month as a recovery period, not a return to old tactics.
Check that the name, address, phone, category and hours are exactly as you corrected them, because reinstated listings sometimes show older data for a while. Add fresh photos, reply to recent reviews, and post an update. Avoid any large batch of edits. Ask genuine customers for reviews in the normal way; never offer incentives.
Rankings in the local pack depend on relevance, distance and prominence, so a reinstated listing does not automatically return to its old position, especially if the old position came from a keyword-stuffed name. The long-term fix is relevance built honestly: service pages on your website, accurate categories and steady reviews. Our local SEO packages cover that monthly routine.
How to stop your Google Business Profile being suspended again
Prevention is dull and effective: one owner account with two-step verification, one manager list you check monthly, no keyword stuffing, and changes made one at a time with proof ready.
- Keep the owner role on a business Google account you control, not an employee's or agency's
- Review managers every month and remove anyone who no longer works with you
- Change one detail at a time, and only when the real-world change has happened
- Before a move, update your GST registration and signboard, then the profile
- Keep the website contact page and LocalBusiness schema identical to the profile
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for ratings
- Watch for user-suggested edits and reject wrong ones quickly
If you run an agency and manage many client listings, the same checklist applies per client. We also do this work quietly for agencies through our white label SEO arrangement.
Why your website matters when a Google Business Profile is suspended
Your website is both evidence and a safety net. A site that shows the same name, address and phone as the profile supports your appeal, and it keeps bringing enquiries while Maps is unavailable.
We check the contact page, header and footer for the exact name and address format, add LocalBusiness structured data with the same details, embed a map of the real location, and make sure the WhatsApp and call buttons work on low-end Android phones. For businesses with several branches, each branch gets its own location page.
If you have no site, or it is a free subdomain with wrong details, a static business website with up to 100 pages starts at ₹10,000 and takes one to two weeks. It is not required for a profile to exist, but it is often what separates a quickly reinstated listing from one that keeps getting questioned. For online stores whose Google Shopping account is also in trouble, the separate Merchant Center misrepresentation fix guide applies.
Suspended Google Business Profile help across India
We handle suspended listings remotely for businesses in every state, over WhatsApp and video calls. Owners in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Lucknow, Patna, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Guwahati and Ludhiana send the same materials: screenshots, documents and photos. We never visit premises; you shoot the photos and the video yourself with our checklist.
Local detail matters less than people expect. What decides the outcome is whether the name, address and documents line up, which is the same in a Tier 1 metro and a small town.
Worked example: a hypothetical sweet shop suspended after moving
Say a family sweet shop in Indore moves from a lane to a main road three hundred metres away. The owner's nephew edits the listing one evening: new address, new mobile number, name changed to include “Best Mithai & Namkeen Indore”, and hours set to 24 hours for festival season. Two days later the Google Business Profile shows as suspended. This is a hypothetical scenario used to explain the method.
Diagnosis: three risky changes at once plus a keyword-stuffed name. Fixes: the name goes back to exactly what the new signboard says, hours return to real opening times, and the phone number stays the new one because the shop genuinely changed it. The old listing at the lane address is marked as moved rather than left as a duplicate.
Evidence: the amended GST registration showing the new place of business, the shop and establishment licence, the electricity bill at the new address and daylight photos of the new signboard with the road visible. The website's contact page and schema are updated to the same address format. Then one appeal, with a three-sentence explanation, and no further edits while it is reviewed.
When to get help with a suspended Google Business Profile, and what we will not do
Get help if you cannot identify the trigger, if several listings or an agency's account are involved, if your documents do not match cleanly, or if an earlier appeal was already rejected. A fresh pair of eyes often spots a duplicate or a mismatch the owner has looked past.
What we will not do: create a new listing to get round the suspension, invent a storefront, rent an address for you to show on Maps, buy reviews, or tell you reinstatement is certain. Only Google can reinstate a profile. What we can do is make sure the listing is compliant, the evidence is strong and the appeal is clear, and then keep the profile healthy.
Recovery is quoted as an itemised job; ongoing local SEO starts at ₹10,000/mo a month. Share your screenshots on WhatsApp and you get the quote in about two working days. See also our penalty recovery page if your website lost rankings at the same time.
