What are your three real options for getting a website designed?
There are only three routes, and every other option is a variation of them. You can design it yourself on a hosted builder, you can hire a website design freelancer (one person or a small freelance team), or you can hire an agency. Marketplaces such as Fiverr, Upwork and Freelancer.com are simply places to find the second option, with a platform fee added.
The routes differ less in what the finished home page looks like and more in what happens around it: who spends the hours, who holds the files, how fast the pages load, how easily you can change your mind next year, and how much you pay every month for as long as the site exists.
A simple way to frame the choice: a builder sells you tools, an agency sells you a department, and a website design freelancer sells you a finished result plus direct access to the person who made it. Which of those you need depends on your time, budget and how central the site is to getting customers.
- DIY builder: you design, the platform hosts, you pay rent
- Website design freelancer: they design and build, you own it
- Agency: a team designs and builds, often with ongoing contracts
When is a DIY website builder the right choice?
A builder is the right call more often than design freelancers like to admit. If you are testing an idea, need a single page with a phone number by Friday, or run a hobby project with no sales riding on it, the drag-and-drop route is quick and inexpensive to start.
The trouble starts when the site becomes a real sales channel. Builders load their own scripts on every page, so speed on budget Android phones over a patchy mobile network can suffer. Layouts are limited to the blocks the platform offers. SEO settings cover titles and descriptions but rarely structured data or fine control of templates. And the design cannot be exported: if you leave, you rebuild.
So use a builder as a stepping stone, not a foundation. When enquiries start arriving through it, that is usually the moment to bring in a website design freelancer, and our builder-to-custom guide explains how to move without losing the traffic you have gained.
Builder makes sense when
Budget is near zero, the site is temporary, you have spare evenings, and a template layout is good enough.
Builder stops making sense when
The site brings leads or sales, you need custom features, you care about speed scores, or the monthly bill keeps growing with add-ons.
When does a design agency beat a website design freelancer?
An agency earns its higher price when the project needs several specialists working at the same time: brand strategists, copywriters, photographers, illustrators, motion designers and a development team, all coordinated by a project manager. Large companies with procurement rules, legal review and multiple departments signing off also tend to fit the agency model better.
For a small or medium business, most of that machinery sits idle. You pay for layers of management between you and the person moving boxes on the screen, and changes travel through tickets and account managers. A website design freelancer removes those layers, which is why the same scope usually costs less and moves faster.
Be honest about your own project. If you need a full rebrand, a photo shoot in your showroom and a six-month content campaign, an agency or several specialists may serve you better than any small freelance team. If you need a clean, fast, well-structured site that brings enquiries, freelance is usually the better value.
What does a website design freelancer actually do for you?
A good website design freelancer does more than pick colours. The work starts with understanding who visits the site and what they need to do there: call, book, buy, download a brochure or ask for a quote. The layout is then planned backwards from that action.
In our team the design and build are not split between strangers. One of us designs the layouts and codes them as a full-stack developer, another of us handles hosting on AWS, speed and technical SEO, and the third of us runs the schedule and any automation such as WhatsApp lead alerts. You get one conversation covering everything.
- Page map: which pages exist and how visitors move between them
- Wireframes: rough boxes for each key page, agreed before styling
- Visual design: type, colour, spacing and images, phone first
- Build: responsive code, forms, WhatsApp button, maps
- Launch: domain, SSL, Google Search Console, analytics
- Upkeep: edits, backups and updates after the site is live
Ask any website design freelancer you speak to which of these steps they do themselves and which they outsource. The answer tells you where hand-offs, and delays, will happen.
How much does a website design freelancer cost, and what changes the price?
Most freelancers quote per project. With us, a custom designed static site of up to 100 pages starts at ₹10,000 (US$150 for clients abroad), an SEO website of 299+ pages starts at ₹20,000, and an online store starts at ₹50,000. Those are floors, not package prices.
Quotes from different freelancers vary widely, and the gap is rarely about talent alone. Four things move a design quote more than anything else:
- Unique layouts: ten pages sharing two templates cost far less than ten pages each designed differently
- Content: whether you supply text and photos or the freelancer has to write, source or restructure them
- Custom features: booking calendars, calculators, member logins and multi-step forms
- Languages: each extra language adds layout checks, fonts and page templates
What should not move the price much: the framework, the number of colour changes, or whether the freelancer lives in your city. When comparing, ask each person to itemise, then remove lines until the scopes match. Our pricing page lists every starting figure.
The three-year cost: builder rent versus a one-time custom design
Comparing only the first month is the most common mistake people make when choosing between a builder and a website design freelancer. A fair comparison looks at three years, because that is roughly how long a small business site lives before a serious refresh.
On a builder, add up the plan you will actually need (not the entry plan), paid apps for forms, bookings or reviews, any premium template, the domain, and your own hours at a realistic value. Remember that the plan renews every year and prices can rise.
With a freelance custom site, add the design and build quote, hosting and domain paid directly to the providers, and maintenance after any free period. With us the first two months of maintenance are free; after that it starts at ₹8,000/mo only if you want it, and many small static sites need very little.
Neither answer is universal. A tiny site with no growth plans can stay cheaper on a builder. A site that brings leads, needs features or grows past a dozen pages usually comes out ahead as an owned custom build within a couple of years, and it has no ceiling on what you can add later.
How to vet a website design freelancer before you pay anything
Judge a website design freelancer on evidence you can check yourself, not on how polished their pitch sounds. Five minutes with their past work on your own phone tells you more than any portfolio PDF.
- Open three live sites they designed on a mid-range Android phone. Do they load quickly and read easily?
- Run one through PageSpeed Insights and note the mobile score
- Ask what they would change on your current site, and why
- Ask who owns the domain, hosting and source code at the end
- Ask for an itemised quote rather than a single total
- Check how payments are staged, and that nothing is billed before written approval
- Ask how many revision rounds are included and how feedback is collected
Red flags: a price that arrives before any questions, refusal to put the domain in your name, a portfolio of only screenshots, or promises of first-page rankings. Nobody can guarantee rankings, and a website design freelancer who claims to is telling you something about everything else they say.
How the design process runs when you hire a freelancer
A design project with a freelancer should feel structured without being bureaucratic. Ours follows the same order every time, because skipping the early steps is what causes endless revisions later.
Brief and page map (days 1–2)
You tell us on WhatsApp what the site must achieve. We list pages, the main action on each, and what content is needed from you.
Wireframes (days 2–4)
Plain grey layouts for the home page and one inner page. Agreeing structure before colour saves most of the rework.
Visual design (days 4–7)
Fonts, colours, images and spacing applied, shown on a private staging link you open on your own phone.
Build and content (week 2)
Remaining pages built, forms and WhatsApp button wired, text and photos placed, speed tuned.
Launch and handover
Domain connected, SSL on, Search Console verified, logins and repository shared with you.
This is the rhythm for a static site of 1–2 weeks. Larger SEO sites take 3–5 weeks and stores 4–8 weeks because of templates, catalogues and checkout testing. The single biggest cause of delay is late content, so gather text and photos early.
Who owns the design when a freelancer, builder or agency makes it?
Ownership is where the three routes differ most, and it is the question people forget until they want to leave. On a builder you own your text and images, but the design and the code live inside the platform. You cannot download the site and host it elsewhere.
With an agency, ownership depends entirely on the contract. Some hand over everything; some keep the hosting, the theme licence or the admin login and charge to release them. Read the clause before signing.
With our website design freelancers, the domain and hosting are registered in your name from the first day, or you create the accounts and add us as users. The source code sits in a repository you can access, and at launch you receive every login plus a list of renewal dates. If you later want another developer, they can pick it up without asking our permission.
Whoever you hire, insist on this in writing. It costs a good freelancer nothing to agree to, and it protects years of your search rankings and content.
Does a website design freelancer help your SEO and page speed?
Design decisions are SEO decisions. Heading order, how text is placed in the layout, image sizes, how menus link pages together and whether content is real text or baked into images all affect how Google reads a site. A builder handles some of this automatically and some of it badly; a freelancer can control all of it.
When our team designs a site, another of us’s technical SEO work is part of the build, not an afterthought: one clear H1 per page, logical headings, schema markup for your business type, an XML sitemap, compressed and correctly sized images, and clean URLs. We check Core Web Vitals on a mid-range phone before launch.
Speed matters more in India than most design portfolios admit. A large share of visitors arrive on budget Android phones and mobile data, where a heavy hero video or a dozen third-party scripts can add seconds. A lean custom design often loads faster than a builder template for exactly this reason.
What we will not do is promise positions. Good design and structure give your content a fair chance; rankings then depend on competition, content and time. For ongoing work there is monthly SEO from ₹10,000/mo.
India-specific design choices a freelancer should get right
A design made for a European template gallery can fail quietly in India. A website design freelancer working for Indian customers should handle a few local realities by default.
- Phone-first layouts: tap targets big enough for thumbs, click-to-call and a WhatsApp button always within reach
- Budget Android performance: small images, few fonts, no autoplay video on mobile
- Regional languages: Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Bengali or other scripts with proper web fonts and enough line height
- UPI-friendly checkout: for stores, UPI and card options designed for a small screen
- Local trust cues: address, map, GST details where relevant, and real photos over stock
- Slow networks: pages usable even before every image has loaded
Builders can do some of these with effort; agencies usually can but charge for each. We treat them as the default for any site aimed at Indian visitors, as covered in our guide to mobile-responsive design.
Decision rules: pick your route in two minutes
If you have read this far and still feel unsure, these rules settle it for most businesses. Go down the list and stop at the first one that is true for you.
- The site is temporary or a hobby, and you have spare time: use a builder
- You need a brand strategy, photo shoots and a large campaign team together: use an agency
- The site must bring enquiries or sales and you want to own it: hire a website design freelancer
- You already outgrew a builder and pay for several add-ons: move to a freelance custom build
- You need hundreds of service or location pages: hire a freelancer who builds SEO sites
Still unsure? Send us your current site or a rough idea on WhatsApp. If a builder suits you better, we will say so, and it costs you nothing to ask. You can also read how we approach custom-coded versus template sites.
Worked example: a bakery weighing the builder against a website design freelancer
This is a hypothetical example to show the reasoning, not a client story. A family bakery in a tier-2 city takes cake orders over phone and WhatsApp. The owner set up a builder site two years ago: a home page, a menu as a photo, and a contact form. It gets few visits and the menu image is unreadable on phones.
Option one is to stay on the builder and upgrade the plan to add online ordering. That keeps the monthly bill growing, and the menu is still a picture that Google cannot read.
Option two is a custom static site from a website design freelancer: a phone-first menu as real text, a cake gallery with compressed images, a WhatsApp order button on every page, Google Maps, and separate pages for birthday, wedding and eggless cakes so each can appear in local searches. That fits the static plan from ₹10,000 and a 1–2 week build.
The bakery would own the domain and code, pay hosting directly, and have two months of free edits for seasonal menus. If it later wants UPI checkout, the same site can grow into a store instead of starting again.
Website design freelancer checklist before you sign
Copy this list into your notes and tick it off with whoever you are considering. A reliable website design freelancer will answer every line without hesitation.
- Itemised quote with pages, features and timeline listed separately
- Domain and hosting registered in my name, or I create them and add the freelancer
- Source code access at launch, with all admin logins
- Design shown on a staging link I can open on my phone
- Number of revision rounds and how feedback is given
- Payment stages tied to visible milestones, nothing before written approval
- Mobile speed checked before launch
- Search Console, sitemap and basic schema included
- What happens after launch: free period and later maintenance terms
- Refund and cancellation terms written down (ours: refund policy)
Website design freelancer se banwayein ya khud builder par? (simple Hinglish)
Agar aapko sirf ek chhota sa page chahiye, kuch mahino ke liye, aur aapke paas time hai, to builder theek hai. Lekin agar website se customers aane chahiye, enquiry ya order aane chahiye, to website design freelancer se custom site banwana better rehta hai.
Kyun?
Freelance website design across India
We work remotely, so your city does not limit who designs your site. Clients share feedback on WhatsApp and staging links, and calls happen over video when needed. Each city page below shows what local businesses there usually ask for.
City guides with local detail include Thiruvananthapuram, Bhopal, Nashik, Rajkot, Madurai, Jodhpur, Siliguri, Mangaluru, Kolkata and Varanasi. In smaller towns a well-designed local business website often stands out quickly because fewer competitors have one.
Outside India we also design for clients in the USA, UK and UAE, billed in USD.
