Web designer, web developer or both: who should you hire?
If you only hire a web designer, you get a picture of a website; someone still has to make it work. That gap is where most disappointment comes from, because a mock-up does not have to load on slow data, fit long Hindi words or handle a form error.
So decide first what you need at the end. Want a live, working site? Hire someone who designs and builds, or hire a designer and a developer who have worked together before. Only want a visual direction to hand to your in-house developer? A design-only freelancer is fine, as long as the hand-off format is agreed.
Our team sits in the first group. One of us leads the front-end layout and build, another of us checks hosting, speed and search structure, and the third of us keeps the schedule and review rounds on track. You approve a design, and that same design is what reaches the domain.
Hire design-only when
You already have a developer, an in-house team or a platform partner who will build exactly what is drawn.
Hire design plus build when
You want one party responsible from the first sketch to the live URL, and one person to call when something looks wrong.
How to review a web designer's portfolio before you hire
A portfolio proves taste; live links prove skill. Before you hire a web designer, ask for three to five websites that are online right now, then check them yourself instead of reading the case study captions.
Open each link on your own phone over mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. Scroll the home page, open an inner page, and try the contact form. Look for the boring things: text large enough to read without zooming, buttons you can tap with a thumb, images that do not jump around while loading, and a menu that makes sense in two taps.
- Variety: do the sites look like different brands, or the same template recoloured?
- Hierarchy: can you tell within three seconds what each business does?
- Mobile: does the layout rethink itself for a phone, or just shrink?
- Speed: run one link through PageSpeed Insights and note the mobile score
- Consistency: are buttons, spacing and fonts the same across pages?
- Relevance: is at least one site close to your type of business or audience?
A Dribbble or Behance shot is useful for style, but ask which of those designs went live and how close the live version stayed to the concept.
Writing a web design brief a designer can quote from
A good brief turns “make it modern” into decisions. It does not need to be long; one or two pages is enough if every line answers something a designer would otherwise have to ask you.
Send the same brief to each person you are thinking of hiring. Quotes then describe the same job, and you can compare them line by line rather than guessing why one number is double another.
- Business in one sentence and the customer you most want to reach
- The single action a visitor should take: call, WhatsApp, book, buy
- Page list, with the three most important pages marked
- Three sites you like and one you dislike, with a reason for each
- Brand material you already have: logo files, colours, fonts, photos
- Languages needed (English, Hindi, a regional language)
- Who writes the text, and when it will be ready
- Budget band and the date you need the site live
Unsure what to put in the page list? The small business website components page lists the sections most businesses need.
What questions should you ask a web designer before hiring?
The best interview questions have answers you can check later. Ask them in writing, over email or WhatsApp, so both of you can refer back to the replies when the project is under way.
“How many revision rounds are included, and what counts as one?”
A clear answer names a number and defines a round as one consolidated list of changes. Vague answers lead to arguments in week two.
“Will you design for mobile first?”
In India most visitors arrive on Android phones, so the phone layout should be designed first and approved, not squeezed from a desktop mock-up.
“Who builds the site, and will it match the design?”
If someone else builds it, ask how the hand-off works and who checks the live version against the approved screens.
“What files do I get at the end?”
Expect the live site, the code, image assets and any design source files created for your project.
“Which fonts and images are licensed, and in whose name?”
Free fonts such as Google Fonts are safe; paid fonts and stock photos need a licence that covers your business.
How much does it cost to hire a web designer in India?
Most freelancers quote per project rather than per hour, and the design share depends on how many distinct layouts you need. With BtechWaleTech a designed and built static site of up to 100 pages starts at ₹10,000 (US$150), a large SEO site at ₹20,000, and a designed online store at ₹50,000.
Across the market, quotes to hire a web designer vary widely for what sounds like the same job. The spread usually comes from four things: whether the design is custom or a bought theme, how many page types are designed separately, whether copywriting and photo sourcing are included, and whether the price includes building and launching the site or stops at mock-ups.
To compare fairly, write the scope next to each figure. A low design-only quote plus a separate build quote can easily cost more than one designer who also develops. For market context by project type, see website making cost in India.
Revision rounds: how many should you agree when you hire a web designer?
Agree the number before work starts and write it into the quote. Two or three consolidated rounds on the home page, and fewer on inner pages that reuse its style, is a common and workable pattern; the exact number for your project is set in your written quote.
What matters more than the count is the definition. One round should mean one list of changes, from one decision-maker, sent together. Ten scattered messages over three days from four family members is not one round; it is the most common reason design projects overrun.
- Collect feedback from everyone first, then send one list
- Mark each point as must-change or nice-to-have
- Point to the exact section, ideally with a screenshot
- Say what is wrong (“hard to read”) rather than only the fix (“make it blue”)
- Approve in writing once a page is agreed, so it stays settled
Changes after approval are still possible; they are simply scoped and quoted as extra work. Our terms set out how that is handled.
What happens after you hire a web designer: the design stages
A design job moves from structure to style to detail. Skipping the first stage is the usual reason people end up redesigning twice.
1. Structure
A sitemap and rough wireframe of the home page: which sections appear, in what order, and what each one asks the visitor to do.
2. Visual direction
Colours, type, photo style and button shapes applied to the home page, shown on a staging link you open on your phone.
3. Inner page templates
Service, about, contact and listing pages designed from the same system, so the site feels like one brand.
4. Build and real content
The approved layouts are coded with your actual text and photos, which always reveals a few spacing fixes.
5. Final check
Every page reviewed on phone and desktop against the approved design before launch.
A static site usually covers all five stages in 1–2 weeks when content arrives on time.
Warning signs when you hire a web designer
Most bad design hires are visible in the first week of conversation. Take any of these as a reason to slow down and ask more.
- Portfolio contains only images, with no live URLs
- Every sample uses the same theme with different colours
- No question about your customers before a price is sent
- “Unlimited revisions”, which usually means no process
- Desktop mock-ups only, with mobile “handled later”
- Paid fonts or stock images used with no word on licences
- Refusal to hand over design files or code after payment
- Pressure to pay everything before seeing a single layout
Anyone worth hiring will answer these points calmly and in writing. If a reply dodges the question, you have learned something useful for free.
Designing for Indian phones: what your web designer must get right
Your visitors are mostly on Android, often on mid-range or budget handsets, and frequently on mobile data that drops in lifts and basements. Web design for India has to start there.
That means large, readable body text, buttons placed within thumb reach, a sticky WhatsApp or call button, and forms that bring up the number keypad for phone fields. It also means restraint: heavy background videos, huge hero images and animation libraries look impressive on a designer's laptop and then stall on a budget phone.
If you serve customers in Hindi or a regional language, ask to see the layout with real translated text. Devanagari and Tamil headings run to different lengths than English and need line height to breathe. A designer who tests this early saves you a painful rebuild of every heading later. More on this is on the responsive website page.
Your brand, fonts and photos: what a hired web designer needs from you
A web designer turns an existing identity into screens; they are not usually the person who invents it. The more brand material you provide, the less the design depends on guesswork.
Send your logo as a vector file (SVG, AI or PDF) if you have one, not a WhatsApp image. List your brand colours if they exist. Share real photos of your shop, team, product or work; even phone photos taken in good daylight beat generic stock images, because visitors recognise stock at a glance.
If you have no brand kit at all, say so. We can choose a clean type pairing from free, licensed web fonts and a small colour palette that suits your logo, but we do not create logos or brand books. For those, hire a brand or graphic designer first, then bring their files to the website project.
Does design affect SEO? What to check before approving a layout
Yes. Search engines read the structure that design decisions create. A beautiful page with no real heading, text baked into images and a five-megabyte banner will struggle, however good it looks.
Before you approve a layout, check that each page has one clear main heading, that key text is real text rather than part of a picture, and that the design leaves room for the content search visitors need, such as prices, service areas and FAQs. Ask how images will be compressed and sized. We check Core Web Vitals on the staging link before launch and verify Google Search Console for you.
Design cannot promise rankings, and nobody can guarantee them. It can remove the obstacles. If you want ongoing search work after launch, monthly SEO starts at ₹10,000/mo; details are on SEO services.
Who owns the design after you hire a web designer?
You should, once the project is paid for, and that should be written in the quote or agreement. Ownership covers the layouts, the code, the images made for you and any design source files created during the project.
Two areas need attention. Fonts and stock photos are licensed, not owned; make sure any paid licence is bought in your business name. Third-party themes or templates come with their own licence terms, which is one reason we prefer to code layouts rather than resell a theme.
At handover we share repository access, the admin login if there is one, image assets, and any design files created for your site. The domain and hosting are in your name from the first day, so moving to another designer later is always possible.
Checklist: before you hire a web designer and pay the advance
Run through this list with each candidate. It takes a short call and protects most of your budget.
- I have opened at least three of their live sites on my phone
- They received the same written brief as everyone else
- The quote lists pages, layouts and features line by line
- The number of revision rounds is written down
- Mobile layouts will be designed and approved, not assumed
- They will build the site, or the hand-off to a developer is agreed
- Fonts and images are licensed for my business
- Domain and hosting will be in my name
- Design files and code come to me at the end
- Payments are staged against layouts I can see
If a candidate ticks fewer than eight of these, keep looking, whatever the price. Our guide to judging “best” adds evidence checks for developers.
Worked example: hiring a web designer for a dental clinic
This is a hypothetical example to show the hiring steps in action, not a client story.
A two-chair dental clinic wants a site that makes new patients comfortable enough to book. The owner writes a one-page brief: seven pages, a Hindi version of the treatments page, real photos of the clinic, and one action, “Book on WhatsApp”. She sends it to three people and asks each for live links.
One replies with a price and a theme demo. One sends five live sites but only desktop mock-ups for the proposal. The third asks who the patients are, whether they arrive by search or referral, and proposes a phone-first home page with timings, fees guidance and a sticky WhatsApp button. That quote itemises layouts, the Hindi page and two revision rounds on the home page.
With us, a project like this would sit in the static plan from ₹10,000, launch in about two weeks if photos arrive on time, and fall under two months of free maintenance for timing and fee updates. Medical sites have extra rules; see doctor website developer.
Hire a web designer anywhere in India, remotely
Design reviews work well remotely because the thing you review is a link on your own phone. We share staging URLs, discuss changes on WhatsApp or a video call, and take payment by UPI or bank transfer, so your city makes no difference to the process or the starting prices.
Our city pages describe what businesses in each place tend to need: Pune, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chikkamagaluru, Lonavla, Vrindavan, Malappuram, Pollachi, Jalpaiguri and Moga.

Web designer hire karna hai? Seedhe steps
Pehle ek chhota brief likhiye: business kya karta hai, customer kaun hai, website par visitor kya kare (call, WhatsApp ya order), kaunse pages chahiye aur kaunsi 2–3 websites pasand hain. Yahi brief har designer ko bhejiye.
Designer ki live websites apne phone par kholkar dekhiye, sirf screenshots par bharosa mat kijiye. Kitne revision rounds milenge, yeh quote mein likhwa lijiye. Domain aur hosting apne naam par rakhiye. Hamare saath designed website ₹10,000 se shuru hoti hai, aur launch ke baad 2 mahine maintenance free hai.
