What does a website speed optimization freelancer actually do?
A website speed optimization freelancer measures how fast real people experience your pages, finds the few causes that matter most, and fixes them at the source. The work sits between front-end development, server setup and a little detective work.
Speed is not one number. A page can start drawing quickly but show the main image late, or look ready but ignore taps for a second, or jump around as ads load. Google’s Core Web Vitals split these into three measurements, and each has different causes and different fixes. That is why a general “make it fast” request needs a diagnosis first.
The deliverable should be measurable: which pages failed, what was changed, and what the numbers look like afterwards in both lab tests and real-user data. If the only result is a screenshot of a green score on the home page, the job is not done.
Core Web Vitals in plain words: LCP, INP and CLS
Google measures page experience with three Core Web Vitals, judged on the 75th percentile of real visits. Passing means most of your visitors have a good experience, not just the ones on fast laptops.
LCP: Largest Contentful Paint
How long until the biggest thing in view, usually the hero image or main heading, appears. Good is 2.5 seconds or less. Usually hurt by heavy images, slow servers and render-blocking CSS or scripts.
INP: Interaction to Next Paint
How quickly the page visibly responds after a tap, click or key press. Good is 200 milliseconds or less. INP replaced First Input Delay in 2024 and is mostly hurt by heavy JavaScript.
CLS: Cumulative Layout Shift
How much content jumps around while loading. Good is 0.1 or less. Caused by images without dimensions, late banners, ads and web fonts swapping in.
A fourth number, time to first byte (TTFB), is not a Core Web Vital but feeds directly into LCP. If your server takes a long time to answer, no amount of image work will save the page.
Field data or lab score: which one should a speed freelancer chase?
Field data decides whether you pass Core Web Vitals; lab data helps find why you fail. A website speed optimization freelancer needs both, but should never confuse them.
Field data comes from real Chrome users and is published in the Chrome UX Report (CrUX). PageSpeed Insights shows it at the top when your site has enough traffic, and Search Console groups your URLs into good, needs improvement and poor. It uses a rolling 28-day window, so improvements take a few weeks to show fully.
Lab data is the Lighthouse test underneath: one simulated load on a throttled mobile device. It is repeatable and gives detailed traces, which makes it ideal for debugging. But it cannot measure INP directly, and a single run varies. A freelancer who promises “100 on PageSpeed” is chasing the lab number; one who talks about the 75th percentile of your visitors is chasing the result that counts.
How a website speed optimization freelancer audits a site
A proper audit takes the site apart by page type rather than testing only the home page. Product pages, blog posts and category pages often fail for different reasons.
- Pull Core Web Vitals from Search Console and CrUX to see which page groups fail and on which metric
- Pick one representative URL per template and run lab traces on a throttled mobile profile
- Measure server response time from more than one location
- List every third-party script, with its size and what it blocks
- Check image sizes, formats and whether the hero image is discoverable early
- Record layout shifts and the elements causing them
- Rank causes by visitor impact and effort, then quote each fix as its own line
The audit ends with a short written summary in plain English, not a raw report export. You should be able to read it and understand what is slow and why.
Image fixes: the quickest speed win on most sites
On most small business sites we review, images are the largest part of the page weight. A phone photo uploaded straight into a slider can weigh more than the rest of the page combined.
The fixes are well known but need doing properly. Serve images in modern formats such as WebP or AVIF with fallbacks. Generate several sizes and let the browser choose the right one with srcset and sizes. Set width and height on every image so the layout does not jump. Lazy-load images below the fold, but never the main hero image, which should load early and can be preloaded or given high fetch priority.
The lasting fix is a pipeline, not a one-off compression pass. If staff keep uploading large photos, the site slows again within months. We set up automatic resizing and conversion on upload, whether through the CMS, the build step or an image CDN, so the fix survives future content.
JavaScript: why your site feels slow even after it looks loaded
Heavy JavaScript is the main cause of poor INP and a frequent cause of slow LCP. The page may look finished, but the browser’s main thread is busy running scripts, so taps wait.
The usual culprits are page builders that ship large script bundles on every page, sliders and animation libraries, several analytics and marketing tags, chat widgets, and embedded video players loaded upfront. On custom apps, large client-side frameworks rendering everything in the browser add to it.
Fixes we apply: remove what is unused, load scripts only on pages that need them, defer non-critical scripts until after interaction or idle time, replace heavy embeds with lightweight facades that load the real player on click, and break long tasks into smaller pieces. For marketing tags, we list each one with its cost and let you decide. Often the site needs fewer scripts, not faster ones. See React developer for framework-level choices on single-page apps.
Hosting, caching and TTFB: when the server is the problem
If the server takes a long time to send the first byte, everything after it is late. Slow TTFB is common on crowded shared hosting, on WordPress sites with no page caching, and on sites hosted far from their visitors.
We measure TTFB from several locations and on cached and uncached pages. Then we fix in order of effort: enable full-page caching where the content allows it, add a CDN for static files and, where suitable, whole pages; update to a supported PHP or Node version; add object caching for database-heavy sites; and move hosting only when the plan itself is the bottleneck.
Hosting moves are handled like any migration: backup first, new server tested on a temporary address, DNS switched in a quiet hour, email records preserved. Your hosting account stays in your name, and so does the bill. For the setup side, see hosting setup.
Hiring a website speed optimization freelancer for WordPress and WooCommerce
WordPress sites are the most common speed jobs we see, and they usually fail for the same reasons: too many plugins, a heavy page builder, an all-purpose theme loading features you never use, and no caching suited to the host.
We start by listing every plugin and what it loads on each page, then remove duplicates and abandoned ones. Page caching is set up to match the hosting stack. Scripts and styles from plugins are limited to the pages that need them. The database is cleaned of old revisions, expired transients and leftover tables from removed plugins.
WooCommerce needs care because cart, checkout and account pages cannot be cached like normal pages. We keep them uncached, lighten them, and test a full order on a real Android phone after every change. If you are choosing someone to build or rebuild on WordPress, read hire a WordPress developer.
Fonts, CSS and render-blocking resources
Before the browser can draw text, it often waits for CSS files and web fonts. Too many of these, or ones loaded from slow third-party servers, delay everything visible.
We reduce the number of font families and weights, host fonts on your own domain, subset them where only some characters are used, and use font-display settings so text shows immediately with a fallback. Critical CSS for the top of the page can be inlined while the rest loads without blocking. Unused CSS from themes and frameworks is removed where it is safe to do so.
For Indian sites with Hindi or regional-language text, fonts need extra thought. Devanagari, Tamil or Bengali font files can be large, so we check whether system fonts on Android render your language well enough, and load custom fonts only where they add real value.
Why speed matters more for Indian visitors
A large share of Indian web traffic comes from mid-range and budget Android phones on mobile data that varies between strong and patchy through the day. A page that feels instant on a new laptop over office broadband can take many seconds on those devices.
Budget phones have slower processors, so JavaScript takes longer to run, which hurts INP more than on flagship devices. Data costs still matter to many users, so heavy pages also cost them money. And if the page is slow, the visitor often returns to search results or messages a competitor on WhatsApp instead.
So we test on a real lower-end Android device and on throttled connections, not only on the lab profile. We also make sure the WhatsApp button, call button and enquiry form appear and respond early, since that is where Indian visitors usually convert.
How much does a website speed optimization freelancer cost?
Speed work is quoted per fix after a short review, because the effort depends entirely on what is causing the slowness. A site that only needs images resized is a small job. A site with heavy JavaScript, a page builder and slow hosting is several jobs.
What drives cost: the number of distinct page templates, the platform and how customisable it is, how much third-party script is involved, whether hosting needs moving, and how carefully checkout or login flows must be retested. The quote lists each item with its price so you can do the highest-impact fixes first.
Across the market, speed quotes vary widely, and a low figure attached to a guaranteed score often means aggressive plugin settings on the live site with no testing. Compare what is measured, where changes are tested and whether a post-change field check is included. If the answer is to rebuild, our plans start at ₹10,000 for a static site built for speed from day one. See website developer cost for build pricing in detail.
Does website speed optimization improve Google rankings?
Core Web Vitals are part of Google’s page experience signals, but relevance and content quality weigh far more. Faster pages rarely jump positions on speed alone. What speed does reliably is keep visitors from leaving, which improves enquiries and sales from the traffic you already have.
Where speed helps search most: when two pages are similarly relevant, when slow pages hurt crawl efficiency on large sites, and when poor mobile experience drives visitors straight back to results. We are honest about this. Nobody can guarantee rankings, and a freelancer who links a speed job to a promised position is overselling.
If search growth is the real goal, speed is one line in a larger plan that includes content, structure and links. Our SEO work starts at ₹10,000/mo per month, with Search Console reports you can check yourself.
Red flags when hiring a website speed optimization freelancer
Speed is an area where a nice screenshot can hide a broken result. Watch for these signs before you hand over access.
- “Guaranteed 100 on PageSpeed” as the headline promise
- Testing only the home page on a desktop profile
- Changes made directly on the live site, with no backup
- Aggressive script delay that breaks forms, checkout or tracking
- No mention of field data, Search Console or CrUX
- Hiding content from Google’s tester to fake a score
- No written summary of what was changed
A good website speed optimization freelancer will be happy to show before and after numbers on the same pages, and will ask you to check your forms and checkout once changes go live.
How to keep a site fast after the optimisation job ends
Sites slow down again because new content, plugins and scripts get added without anyone checking their cost. A short set of rules keeps the gains.
- A page budget: a maximum page weight and script count for each template
- Image uploads resized and converted automatically
- New plugins or tags added only after checking what they load
- A monthly look at the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console
- Hosting plan reviewed when traffic grows
If you would rather not track this yourself, monthly care from ₹8,000/mo includes checks on these points, updates and backups. New sites built by us include two months of free maintenance. See website maintenance for what is covered.
Worked example: a slow furniture catalogue on shared hosting
A hypothetical scenario for illustration, not a real client.
A furniture seller’s site shows poor LCP and poor INP on mobile in Search Console. Product pages are the worst. The review finds three causes: full-size camera photos in a product slider, a page builder plus two analytics tools and a chat widget loading on every page, and shared hosting responding slowly on uncached pages.
The quote would have four lines. First, an image pipeline: resized WebP versions, width and height on each image, the first product photo prioritised and the rest lazy-loaded. Second, a script diet: the chat widget loads after the first interaction, one analytics tool is removed as a duplicate, and page builder scripts are limited to pages that use them. Third, page caching configured for the host, with a CDN for static files. Fourth, a check after 28 days of field data to confirm the product pages have moved into the good range. If they have not, we would look again rather than call it done.
Website speed optimization freelancer across India
Speed work is entirely remote: it happens in your hosting, CMS and code, and is measured with public tools you can check yourself. The same process applies whether the site belongs to a shop in a small town or a publisher in a metro.
City pages show what businesses there typically run online: Thane, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Faridabad, Mohali, Jabalpur, Cuttack, Warangal and Ujjain. For short fixes beyond speed, see website developer for hire.
Sites hosted abroad or serving overseas visitors are handled the same way, with tests from the regions that matter, billing in USD and payment through Wise, bank wire or PayPal.
