What is a freelance SEO consultant, and how is it different from an SEO executive?
A freelance SEO consultant is hired to think before anyone types. The job is to find what is holding a site back in search, decide which fixes matter most, and set out a plan that your team, or the consultant, can carry out. An SEO executive, by contrast, is usually hired to do tasks: publish posts, build listings, update meta tags.
Both roles are useful, but mixing them up costs money. Businesses often pay for months of activity, such as blog posts and directory submissions, when the real problem is that Google cannot index half their pages. A consultant’s first deliverable should explain what is actually wrong, with evidence from your own data.
At BtechWaleTech, consulting is led by another of us, who handles technical SEO, data and AWS hosting, with one of us available to implement code changes and the third of us turning the plan into a tracked schedule. That combination means recommendations are written by people who know what each fix costs to build.
When should you hire a freelance SEO consultant?
Bring in a consultant at moments of uncertainty or change, when a wrong decision is expensive. Routine upkeep does not always need one.
- Traffic dropped and nobody can explain why
- Pages are live but Search Console shows many not indexed
- You are planning a redesign, platform change or domain move
- An agency has run for a year with little to show for it
- You are launching many location or service pages at once
- Your developers need clear SEO requirements before a build
- You want a second opinion before signing a large SEO contract
If none of these apply and your site is small, a basic checklist and a well-built site may be enough. We will say so rather than sell an audit you do not need.
What should a freelance SEO consultant’s audit include?
A useful audit answers three questions: can search engines reach and understand every important page, does each page deserve to rank for what it targets, and does the site earn enough trust from other sites. Everything in the report should trace back to one of those.
Crawling and indexing
A full crawl compared with your XML sitemap and Search Console’s page indexing report. We look for pages stuck as “Crawled – currently not indexed”, redirect chains, accidental noindex tags, orphan pages and wasted crawl on filter URLs.
Performance and rendering
Core Web Vitals field data, including Interaction to Next Paint, plus checks that content appears in the rendered HTML rather than only after scripts run.
On-page and structure
Titles, headings, internal links, duplicate or thin pages, schema markup and whether each URL targets one clear intent.
Content and demand
Which searches bring impressions but few clicks, which topics competitors cover that you do not, and which pages compete against each other.
Authority and local signals
Backlink quality, risky links, Google Business Profile health and consistency of business details across listings.
How findings get ranked so you fix the right things first
An audit with two hundred issues and no order is a to-do list nobody finishes. Each finding in our reports carries two scores: likely impact on search visibility and effort to fix, with a note on who should do it.
High-impact, low-effort items go first. A single misconfigured canonical tag across a template can hide hundreds of pages; fixing it may take an hour. Low-impact, high-effort items, such as rewriting every old blog post, wait until the fundamentals are sound or get dropped altogether.
We also flag what not to do. Consultants sometimes recommend changes that look good in a tool’s score but carry risk, such as mass URL changes without redirects or deleting content that still earns links. Knowing what to leave alone is part of the job.
- Critical: blocks indexing or loses traffic now
- High: clear gains on important pages
- Medium: improves quality across templates
- Low: tidy-up with little expected effect
What a 90-day SEO roadmap looks like
The roadmap turns the audit into a calendar. It is the document your team will use every week, so it has to be specific: named pages, named tasks, a person responsible and a way to check it is done.
Month one usually covers technical fixes and measurement: indexing problems, redirects, sitemap cleanup, schema, speed on key templates, and making sure Search Console and analytics are set up correctly. Month two moves to structure and content: merging pages that compete, improving the ten pages closest to page one, and building internal links from strong pages to weak ones. Month three adds new content for gaps found in the audit and, for local businesses, profile and review work.
Every task is written so a developer or writer can pick it up without a meeting. A good freelance SEO consultant writes tickets, not essays.
How much does a freelance SEO consultant cost in India?
Our ongoing monthly SEO starts at ₹10,000/mo (US$150/mo). A standalone audit is quoted after we see the site, because a twenty-page brochure site and a store with fifty thousand URLs are very different jobs.
Across the market, consultant fees vary widely. The spread comes from the depth of the audit, whether content and backlink reviews are included, the size of the site, how much implementation help is bundled, and the consultant’s experience with your platform. A cheap audit is often an automated tool export with a logo on it; an expensive one should show you evidence and reasoning you could not get from a tool.
When comparing quotes, ask each consultant for a sample report page. It tells you more about what you will receive than any price.

How to vet a freelance SEO consultant before you sign
Judge an SEO consultant on reasoning, not promises. The strongest signal is how they talk about your site after a quick look: specific observations beat general praise of their own methods.
- Asks for Search Console access before quoting a big retainer
- Can explain one issue on your site in plain language on the first call
- Shows a sample audit with evidence, not only a score
- States what they will not do: no paid link schemes, no private blog networks
- Explains how results will be measured, in clicks and indexed pages
- Separates the audit fee from implementation work
- Refuses to guarantee positions
Our guide to judging “best” applies the same evidence-first thinking to developers.
Red flags in SEO consulting proposals
SEO attracts more exaggerated claims than almost any other service. A few patterns should make you slow down.
Promises of page-one positions “guaranteed” are the most common. Google itself says nobody can guarantee a ranking, and consultants who promise one either target meaningless keywords or plan tactics that break Google’s spam policies. Next is the bulk backlink package, sold by the hundred. Links bought at volume tend to come from low-quality sites and can harm you.
Watch too for reports built only on rank-tracking charts. Positions for a hand-picked list of phrases can rise while real traffic stays flat. Ask to see clicks and impressions from your own Search Console instead. Finally, be wary of anyone who wants your site’s admin passwords but will not explain what they plan to change.
Technical SEO: where a developer-led consultant helps most
Many search problems are code problems. A JavaScript framework that renders content only in the browser, a filter system that creates millions of URLs, or a template that sets every canonical tag to the home page are all things a writer cannot fix.
Because our consultant works alongside developers, recommendations come with implementation notes: which file, which template, what the output should look like. If you want, we fix them directly; if your own developers prefer to, they get precise tickets. We work with static site generators, WordPress, React and Next.js front ends, and custom back ends in Node.js and Python.
Typical technical fixes include server-side rendering for key pages, proper hreflang for multi-language sites, clean pagination, image optimisation, JSON-LD schema, and log-file checks to see how Googlebot actually spends its time on your site.

Content strategy: deciding what to publish and what to merge
Content strategy starts with pages you already have. Most sites that have published for a few years own several pages chasing the same search, each weaker than one combined page would be.
We map existing URLs to search intents, merge or redirect duplicates, and pick a clear target for each page. Then we look for gaps: questions your customers ask that no page answers, and service or location combinations with real demand. Each new piece gets a brief with the intent, headings to cover, entities to mention, internal links and the page it must not compete with.
We write briefs and edit drafts. Bulk writing is quoted separately or done by your team, because a business owner’s first-hand knowledge usually makes better content than a consultant’s general research.
SEO for AI Overviews and answer engines
Search results now often include AI-generated summaries, and people also ask assistants for recommendations. The fundamentals still decide who gets cited: pages that answer a question directly, show who wrote them and why they are qualified, and are easy for crawlers to read.
Our roadmaps include simple steps for this: a direct answer near the top of key pages, clear question-style headings, accurate schema for the business, FAQs and products, and consistent facts about the business across the web. We also check that your robots rules do not accidentally block crawlers you want. No one can promise inclusion in an AI summary, but structured, specific pages have a better chance.
India-specific SEO: languages, local packs and mobile users
Search in India is mobile-first and increasingly multilingual. Many users search in Hindi, in a regional language, or in Hinglish typed in Latin script, and they expect a result that loads fast on a budget Android phone.
Where your customers search in more than one language, we plan separate language versions with correct hreflang tags rather than machine-translating everything onto one page. For local businesses, the map pack often matters more than organic results, so the roadmap covers Google Business Profile categories, photos, reviews and location pages with genuine local detail.
We also check Core Web Vitals on real mobile data, since field data from slower networks often looks very different from a lab test on office Wi-Fi.
A worked example: a diagnostic lab losing search traffic
This is a hypothetical scenario to illustrate an audit and roadmap, not a client story.
A diagnostic lab with collection centres in several towns sees organic enquiries fall over six months. Its agency reports show rankings “stable”. A freelance SEO consultant is brought in for an audit.
The crawl shows the site was moved to a new template that loads test names through scripts, leaving test pages nearly empty in the rendered HTML. Search Console confirms hundreds of test pages dropped out of the index. Location pages for each centre are near-duplicates with only the town name changed. The roadmap puts server-side rendering of test pages in week one, rewrites the ten highest-demand location pages with real centre details in weeks two to five, and sets up review requests and profile updates for each centre from month two. Progress is measured by indexed pages and clicks from Search Console, month by month.
How a freelance SEO consultant should report progress
Reporting should tell you whether the plan is working and what happens next, in one page. Charts of dozens of keyword positions rarely do that.
Our monthly reports show clicks and impressions from Search Console for the pages we worked on, indexed page counts, tasks completed and tasks slipping, plus the next month’s priorities. Where analytics tracks enquiries or sales, we connect search traffic to those outcomes. You keep full access to your own Search Console and analytics, so you can check every number without us.
SEO takes months. Technical fixes can show effect within weeks; content and authority work usually take longer. A good consultant sets expectations early and says so when something is not working.
Working with your developers and writers after the audit
An audit only pays off when someone acts on it. The handover from consultant to your team is where many SEO projects quietly stall, so we plan it as carefully as the analysis.
Developers receive tickets in the format they already use, whether that is a shared sheet, a project board or plain GitHub issues. Each ticket names the URL pattern or template affected, the current behaviour, the expected output and a way to test it, for example “URL Inspection should show the product description in rendered HTML”. Writers receive briefs with the target search, the questions the page must answer, internal links to add and pages it must not overlap.
We then hold a short fortnightly check-in during the roadmap period. Finished tasks are verified against the live site, blocked ones get a workaround, and priorities shift if Search Console shows something new. If your team is stretched, any item can move to us as an itemised implementation task instead.
- Tickets written for developers, with a test for “done”
- Content briefs with intent, headings and internal links
- Fortnightly check-ins to verify and re-prioritise
- Option to hand any task back to us, priced per item
Freelance SEO consultant services across India
Consulting is remote by nature: we work from your Search Console, analytics and site, discuss findings on video calls, and track tasks in a shared sheet or board. Your location changes nothing about the process.
City pages describe the kinds of businesses we hear from: Gurgaon, Noida, Thane, Mohali, Kozhikode, Tiruchirappalli, Gwalior, Bhopal, Meerut and Amritsar. For businesses outside India, see countries we work with, billed in USD from US$150/mo a month.
SEO consultant kya karta hai? Seedhi baat
SEO consultant pehle aapki website ki jaanch karta hai: Google pages ko padh pa raha hai ya nahi, site kitni tez hai, content sahi searches ke liye bana hai ya nahi. Phir ek list deta hai ki pehle kya theek karna hai aur agle 90 din ka plan banata hai.
Koi bhi aapko Google par pehla number guarantee nahi kar sakta, isliye aise waade se bachiye. Hamare saath monthly SEO ₹10,000/mo se shuru hota hai aur report aapke apne Search Console ke data se banti hai.
