What is astrology app development, and which kind of astrology app are you building?
Astrology app development means building the software that lets people get astrological readings on their phone, either from a calculation engine, from human astrologers, or both. Before any estimate, decide which of three shapes you are building, because the cost difference between them is large.
The first shape is a content and calculation app: daily horoscope, kundli, matching, panchang and muhurat, with ads or a subscription. No astrologer talks to anyone. The second is a single-brand consultation app for one well-known astrologer or a family practice with a few associates, where clients book and pay for sessions. The third is a multi-astrologer marketplace, where dozens or hundreds of independent astrologers go online, clients choose one, and the platform bills by the minute and keeps a commission.
The third shape is what most people picture, because it is the model behind the best-known consultation apps. It is also the hardest: you are running a two-sided marketplace with real-time billing, identity checks on the supply side and payouts every week.
- Content app: one mobile app plus a small admin panel; lowest cost; revenue depends on traffic
- Single-brand consultation app: customer app, a simple astrologer console, bookings or per-minute billing
- Marketplace: customer app, astrologer app, wallet ledger, payouts, moderation, reviews and support tools
If you are an astrologer who mainly wants clients to find you on Google and pay for a slot, start with a website built for paid consultations; an app can follow once repeat clients ask for it.
How does per-minute billing work in an astrology chat and call app?
Per-minute billing works through a prepaid wallet: the user recharges first, the app holds enough balance for the session, and the server debits the wallet as time passes, ending the session when the balance runs out. The phone never decides how much to charge; the server does.
The details decide whether users trust you. We design these rules with you before writing code:
- Rate snapshot: the astrologer’s per-minute price is copied onto the session when it starts, so a price change mid-chat does not affect the user
- Minimum balance: a session starts only if the wallet covers at least a few minutes at that rate
- Tick size: billing per full minute, per started minute or per second, shown to the user before they begin
- Free first session or discounted minutes as a separate promotional balance, spent before paid money
- Warning at one or two minutes left, with a quick recharge that keeps the chat open
- Auto-end, a summary screen and a ledger entry for every debit, credit, refund and bonus
- Refund rules for dropped calls, astrologer no-shows and complaints, applied by admin with a reason code
Technically, the session timer runs on the server and the apps receive updates over a live connection, so a user who kills the app or loses signal is not overcharged. Every change to a balance is written as a ledger row, never as an overwritten number, which lets your accountant reconcile recharges against gateway settlements. The checkout itself uses a standard UPI and card flow; our payment integration work covers the webhooks and failure cases.
Does an astrology app wallet need RBI approval?
Usually the question is whether your wallet is a “closed system” prepaid instrument. The Reserve Bank of India describes closed-system prepaid payment instruments as ones issued by a business to buy goods and services from that same business, with no cash withdrawal, and says their issue is not subject to its authorisation requirement. Open wallets that pay third parties do need authorisation.
An astrology marketplace sits close to that line, because the money a user loads eventually pays independent astrologers. How you structure it matters: whether the platform sells the consultation and pays astrologers a service fee, whether users can withdraw unused balance to a bank account, and how refunds work. These are questions for your chartered accountant or lawyer, not for your developer, and you should settle them before launch.
What we do on the build side is keep the design honest and flexible. The wallet in astrology app development can be built so that balance is spendable only inside your app, refunds go back to the original payment method rather than out as cash, promotional credits are tracked apart from paid money, and every movement is logged with a timestamp and reason. If your adviser asks for a change later, such as caps on balance or extra records, a ledger-based design absorbs it without a rewrite.
Invoices and GST on recharges or on each consultation are also decisions for your CA; the admin panel simply produces the reports they ask for.
Kundli generation in an astrology app: build on an ephemeris library or buy a kundli API?
Both work. A kundli API is the faster start and costs you a monthly or per-call fee; a licensed ephemeris library costs more developer time up front but has no per-chart charge and keeps the calculation under your control.
Whichever you pick, the chart is only as good as its inputs. Birth place has to be turned into latitude, longitude and the correct time zone, including historical offsets for older birth dates, so we use a time-zone database with history rather than a fixed “+5:30”. The ayanamsa must be configurable; many Vedic astrologers work with Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), while followers of KP or Raman expect their own. The app must draw charts the way your users read them, in North Indian, South Indian or East Indian style.
Licensing is the trap people miss. Astrodienst, which publishes the widely used Swiss Ephemeris, offers it either under the GNU Affero General Public License, which obliges you to place your whole software project under the AGPL or a compatible licence, or under a paid Professional licence with a signed contract. A closed-source commercial app normally means buying the Professional licence, in your name. We check the licence of any library or API before it goes into your code.
When an API makes sense
You want to launch in weeks, your volume is modest, and you need extras such as PDF reports, numerology or tarot draws that the provider already offers.
When your own engine makes sense
You generate thousands of charts a day, want offline or low-latency charts inside the app, or need custom calculations your astrologers insist on.
How do astrologer onboarding, verification and payouts work?
Astrologers apply in the app, your team verifies them, they set their rates and hours, and the platform settles their share of earnings on a schedule you define. The partner side is where many marketplaces lose quality, so it deserves as much design time as the customer app.
A sensible onboarding flow in astrology app development collects identity and bank details, languages, specialities (Vedic, KP, tarot, numerology, vastu, palmistry), experience in the astrologer’s own words and a short test consultation with your team. Only approved profiles go live. After that, the astrologer app handles the day-to-day: an online/offline toggle, a busy state while in session, accepting or declining a request within a set number of seconds, and a chat console with the client’s birth chart and past session notes one tap away.
- Commission set per astrologer or per tier, stored on each session so later changes do not rewrite history
- Earnings ledger showing gross session value, platform share, deductions and net payable
- Weekly or fortnightly payout batches prepared by admin, paid by bank transfer, with statements
- Tax deductions on payouts configured as your CA advises; the software only applies the rules
- Ratings, repeat-client rate and response time on an internal dashboard so you can coach or remove astrologers
Keep astrologers from moving clients off-platform: mask phone numbers, filter contact details in chat, and give them reasons to stay, such as fast payouts and fair ranking.
Should live sessions be part of astrology app development from day one?
Usually not. Live streams, where one astrologer answers questions from many viewers who send paid gifts or join a paid queue, are a strong growth feature, but they add streaming costs, moderation work and, on iPhone, a billing rule you have to plan for.
Apple’s App Review Guidelines (section 3.1.3(d)) allow apps that sell real-time person-to-person services between two individuals, such as tutoring or medical consultations, to collect payment outside in-app purchase. The same guideline says one-to-few and one-to-many real-time services must use in-app purchase. In plain terms, a one-to-one astrologer call and a paid group live stream may fall under different billing rules on iOS, and Apple decides in review.
So we sequence it. Version one proves that people pay for one-to-one chat and calls. Version two adds live sessions, with the iOS purchase flow designed for Apple’s rule and a streaming service sized to your real audience. Streaming itself is bought from a video provider on a usage basis and paid by you; we compare providers on price per minute, India latency and the SDK’s support for Flutter or React Native before choosing.
Recorded content such as short horoscope videos is simpler and cheaper than live video, and often gives the same engagement early on.
Will Google Play and the App Store accept an astrology app?
Yes, astrology apps are published on both stores, but Apple in particular expects a genuinely distinct product. Its guideline 4.3 names fortune telling among the app types that are already well established and says Apple will not accept new submissions unless they offer a meaningfully different or improved experience.
That rule is the main reason we discourage lightly rebranded scripts. An astrology app with its own design, real astrologers, a clear consultation workflow and useful tools stands a far better chance than a clone with a new logo. We prepare review notes and a demo account so the reviewer can see a live consultation flow.
Both stores also expect account deletion. Apple’s guideline 5.1.1(v) says an app that supports account creation must offer account deletion inside the app, and Google Play requires an in-app deletion path plus a web link where users can request deletion of their account and data. For an astrology app, which stores birth details and private chat, we build both from the start.
Payments need a separate check. Google Play’s Payments policy lists exemptions from Play billing such as physical goods and services and peer-to-peer payments. Whether a paid live astrologer chat falls inside or outside Play billing is not spelled out the way Apple’s person-to-person rule is, so we read the current Play policy and any billing programmes Google offers for India with you before deciding the Android payment flow. Registration costs US$25 once for Google Play and US$99 a year for the Apple Developer Program, both in your name.
How much does astrology app development cost in India?
Astrology app development cost in India depends mostly on which of the three app shapes you choose and how much of the marketplace you build in version one. With us, mobile app work starts at ₹40,000 (US$600), the backend with wallet and admin starts at ₹60,000 (US$900), and AI features start at ₹40,000. Those are starting points; your quote itemises every module.
Other freelancers and studios will quote very different figures for what sounds like the same app. The spread is real and comes from a few drivers:
- Whether the astrologer side is a full app or a simple web console
- Chat only, or chat plus voice calls, masked phone calls and video
- Kundli by API (lower build effort, ongoing fees) or a licensed engine inside your backend
- Number of languages in the app interface and in horoscope content
- Wallet complexity: bonuses, coupons, referral credit, refunds, astrologer-specific offers
- Live streaming, gifts and leaderboards
- A web version for desktop users and an SEO content site for horoscopes
- Load testing for festival-day peaks and launch campaigns
Running costs sit outside our quote and are billed to you by the providers: servers, SMS for OTP, calling and streaming minutes, the kundli API or licence, and store fees. For a wider view of how apps are priced, see our India app cost guide and the Flutter cost breakdown.
What should the first version of an astrology app include?
The first version should prove one thing: that users will recharge and pay per minute to talk to your astrologers. Everything that does not help prove that can wait for version two.
A lean MVP for a consultation platform usually contains phone OTP login, a birth-details profile, the astrologer list with filters, one-to-one chat, one-to-one voice calls, the prepaid wallet with UPI and card recharge, a free kundli with basic dasha, ratings after each session, the astrologer app with earnings, and an admin panel for approvals, refunds and payouts. That is already a serious build.
Leave for version two
Live streams and gifts, video calls, a remedies shop, report PDFs sold separately, referral programmes, AI chat, a desktop web app and more than two interface languages.
Never cut
Server-side billing, the ledger, refund handling, account deletion, chat reporting and blocking, and basic analytics. Cutting these costs more later than building them now.
The MVP cost guide explains how we trim scope without creating debt. If investors are involved, the startup app page covers demo builds and handover to a future in-house team.
Which technology stack suits astrology app development?
For most astrology platforms we recommend one cross-platform codebase in Flutter or React Native for the customer and astrologer apps, a Node.js or Python backend, PostgreSQL for the wallet ledger, and a managed real-time layer for chat. It keeps one team able to ship Android and iOS together.
Chat needs delivery receipts, typing indicators, image sharing (palm photos, kundli screenshots) and reliable reconnection on patchy mobile data. Voice can be in-app (internet calling) or masked phone calls through a telephony provider, which suits users on weak data in small towns; many platforms offer both. Video and live streams use a commercial real-time video SDK, paid per minute by you.
- Mobile: Flutter or React Native, one codebase, native modules only where calling needs them
- Backend: Node.js or Python (Django or FastAPI) with a job queue for payouts and notifications
- Database: PostgreSQL, with the wallet as an append-only ledger
- Real-time: WebSockets for session state and chat, push notifications for incoming requests
- Hosting: a cloud account in your name, sized for festival peaks, with daily backups
- Admin: a web panel with role-based access for support, finance and astrologer managers
Choosing between the two mobile frameworks is mostly about your future team; our native vs hybrid comparison and React Native cost page go deeper.
Hindi, regional languages and daily content in an astrology app
A large share of astrology users in India are more comfortable in Hindi or their regional language than in English, so plan language support from the start of astrology app development rather than bolting it on.
There are two separate layers. The interface (buttons, screens, errors, notifications) is translated once and stored as language files, so adding Marathi or Tamil later is a content task, not a code change. The content (daily rashifal, festival articles, panchang terms, remedies) needs writers who know both astrology and the language; you supply or approve that copy, and the admin panel lets your team publish it per language on a schedule.
Astrologer filters by language matter more than people expect. A user in Madurai who wants a Tamil-speaking astrologer will leave if the list shows only Hindi speakers. We store languages per astrologer and route requests accordingly.
Daily content is also your retention engine: a morning horoscope push in the user’s language, a panchang widget, and festival reminders give people a reason to open the app on days they do not need a consultation.
If you plan a Hindi or Hinglish AI helper as well, our Hindi AI chatbot guide explains how code-mixed input is handled.
Can AI be used in astrology app development without misleading users?
Yes, if it is labelled and limited. AI works well for drafting daily horoscope text from chart positions, summarising a user’s past sessions for the astrologer, answering app-help questions and suggesting which astrologer suits a question. It should not pretend to be a human astrologer.
We build AI features so that users always know when they are talking to software. An AI assistant answers from your own content and rules, refuses medical, legal and financial predictions, and hands over to a human astrologer when a user wants a real consultation. Horoscope drafts go through an editor or astrologer before publishing if you want a human check.
Cost control matters because language-model APIs charge per use. We cache daily horoscopes per sign and language rather than generating one per user, cap AI chat length, and log usage so you can see the monthly bill coming. AI features start at ₹40,000 with us, and the model provider bills you directly.
For the mechanics of grounding answers in your own material, see LLM integration work and RAG chatbot development.
Trust, privacy and user safety on an astrology platform
An astrology app holds birth details, family questions and private worries, so treat it as a sensitive-data product. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to the personal data you collect; your lawyer should confirm your notices and consent flows, and the build should make those promises true in the software.
On the build side that means collecting only what the service needs, encrypting data in transit and at rest, restricting admin access by role, logging who viewed which chat, and deleting accounts properly when asked. Chat transcripts should be visible to support staff only when a complaint is raised, not browsable by default.
- Report and block buttons in every chat and call
- Automatic filtering of phone numbers and payment handles shared in chat
- Clear refund and complaint policy linked from the wallet screen
- Consent before any call recording, with retention limits you set
- Rules for astrologers against fear-based upselling of costly remedies, enforced through reviews and audits
- Age gate and terms that state the service is for guidance, not medical, legal or financial advice
None of this is legal sign-off; it is the software that lets your policies work. How a project with us is agreed is set out in your written quote and our terms.
How long does astrology app development take?
A consultation MVP with chat, calls, wallet, kundli, astrologer app and admin panel typically takes 10 to 14 weeks from signed scope to store submission. A content-only horoscope and kundli app can be ready in 6 to 8 weeks. Live streams, video and AI features each add a few weeks as later releases.
The time goes roughly like this: two weeks on flows, wallet rules and screen designs; five to seven weeks building the apps, backend and admin in parallel; two weeks of testing with your real astrologers on test money; and one to two weeks for store review and a soft launch. Apple’s review of a new consultation app can ask questions, so we leave room for a second submission.
What slows projects down is rarely code. It is waiting for astrologer profiles and photos, legal text, horoscope content in each language, the kundli licence purchase, or a payment account that is still under verification. We send a list of these items in the first week so they run alongside development.
You see a working build every week on your own phone through test tracks, not screenshots.
Who owns the astrology app, the code and the store listings?
You do. The Google Play developer account, the Apple developer account, the cloud servers, the domain, the kundli licence and every provider account are created in your business name, and we work inside them with access you grant and can revoke.
Source code lives in a repository you own from the first commit, not handed over at the end. At launch you also receive the admin credentials, a short technical document covering the wallet ledger, payout jobs and deployment steps, and a list of every paid service with its renewal date.
This matters more for astrology app development than for a brochure app, because your wallet holds users’ money and your store listing carries your reviews and rankings. If a developer publishes the app under their account, moving it later is slow, and in some cases the listing and reviews cannot move at all. Ask any developer, including us, whose name will appear as the publisher.
The questions to ask before hiring an app developer page lists the ownership checks worth putting in writing, and company vs freelancer for apps compares the risks on each side.
Getting users: SEO, app store search and AI answers for an astrology app
An astrology app grows from search more than from ads once it is established, because people search daily for rashifal, kundli matching and muhurat. A companion website with fast, indexable pages for each sign, festival and calculator brings that traffic to you, then sends it into the app.
A companion content site works well alongside the app: horoscope pages per sign and language, a free kundli and matching tool on the web, astrologer profile pages, and festival calendars. These pages need structured headings, quick loading on mid-range Android phones and clean Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console. The same short, factual answer blocks also help AI search tools quote you. Nobody can promise rankings; what we can do is build pages that deserve them.
Inside the stores, the listing title, screenshots and first lines of the description decide installs. Keywords in Hindi and English, screenshots that show a real consultation flow, and quick replies to reviews all help. Our app store optimisation work covers this, and an SEO website build starts at ₹20,000 for the content site.
Worked example: planning astrology app development for a family practice in Varanasi
Here is a hypothetical to show how the pieces fit. Say a family of astrologers in Varanasi has a senior jyotishi, eight associate astrologers and a steady flow of clients from WhatsApp and phone calls. They want an app so clients across India can consult without travelling.
On the first call we would suggest a single-brand consultation app, not an open marketplace, because they already have the astrologers and the trust. Version one: customer app in Hindi and English, per-minute chat and phone call through the wallet, free kundli using a licensed engine, astrologer app for the nine family astrologers, and an admin panel run by one family member. Payouts are internal, so the partner side stays simple.
Version two, after about three months of real data: puja booking with dates at Kashi temples handled by the family, report PDFs, and live sessions on major festival days, planned around Apple’s one-to-many billing rule. A content website with daily rashifal would run alongside to bring search traffic.
The quote would itemise app work from ₹40,000, backend and admin from ₹60,000, and list the running costs they pay directly. Nothing starts until they approve that quote in writing.
Astrology app development across India
We work remotely with astrologers, spiritual organisations and startups anywhere in India, on WhatsApp and video calls. Demand for astrology app development is not limited to metros; much of the supply of astrologers sits in temple towns, while many paying users live in large cities.
For astrologers in pilgrimage centres such as Varanasi, Ujjain, Mathura, Puri and Tirupati, the natural fit is an app that carries an existing practice to users elsewhere. A founder in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jaipur or Indore with no practice of their own is more likely to plan a marketplace with many astrologers. Regional platforms serving Tamil, Bengali or Marathi users look closer to Chennai, Kolkata and Nashik for astrologers and content.
Wherever you are, the process is the same: a scope call, a written itemised quote in about two working days, weekly builds on your phone, and payment by UPI or bank transfer against milestones you have seen working.
Astrology app development checklist before you brief a developer
A short brief saves weeks. Answer these before the first call, even roughly, and any developer can give you a meaningful estimate for your astrology app development project.
- Which shape: content app, single-brand consultation app or open marketplace?
- How many astrologers at launch, and who verifies and trains them?
- Chat only, or chat plus voice calls, phone calls and video?
- Per-minute rates set by you or by each astrologer, and your commission model
- Billing tick (per minute or per second), free first session, recharge packs and refund rules
- Kundli source: API or licensed engine, ayanamsa and chart style defaults
- Languages for the interface and for daily content, and who writes the content
- Payout frequency and what your CA says about tax deductions and invoices
- Live sessions now or later, and the iOS billing plan for them
- Who owns the store accounts, servers and licences (it should be you)
Send the answers on WhatsApp or through the contact page, and we will reply with questions or an itemised quote.
