What are the ways to hire developers in India?
There are four practical routes, and most confusion comes from comparing prices across them as if they sold the same thing. They do not. Each model packages a different mix of skill, management and risk.
A solo freelancer sells their own time, usually found on a marketplace such as Upwork or Freelancer.com or through referrals. A freelance team like ours is a few independent developers who share projects, so you get cover for holidays and illness without agency overhead. An agency or outsourcing vendor sells delivery with project managers, QA staff and a bench of replacements. A dedicated or employed developer works only on your product, either through a vendor that rents you a full-time seat, an employer of record that employs the person on your behalf, or your own registered Indian entity.
Before you hire developers in India, write down three things: how long the work lasts, how much of it is known today, and who on your side will manage it. Those answers pick the model faster than any rate card.
- Short, defined job with a clear end: freelancer or freelance team
- Large build with many parallel streams: agency
- Product roadmap for years, daily standups: dedicated or employed developer
- Nobody on your side can manage technical work: avoid solo freelancers
When to hire a freelance developer in India
Hire a freelance developer when the task is specific, you can judge the result yourself, and a delay of a week would not hurt the business. Fixing a checkout bug, building a landing page, writing an integration between two tools: these suit one skilled person well.
The weakness is concentration. One person means one point of failure: illness, a family wedding or a better-paying client can pause your project with no one to pick it up. You also become the project manager by default, writing tickets, testing builds and chasing updates.
A freelance team reduces that risk while keeping the direct line to the people coding. At BtechWaleTech, one of us writes most of the full-stack code, another of us handles AWS, data, AI work and technical SEO, and the third of us runs the plan, the updates and automation. When one of us is away, the other two can open the same repository and keep going, because nothing lives only on one laptop.
Signs a solo freelancer is enough
The job fits in two or three weeks, you have a clear written spec, and you or a colleague can review the code or at least test the result thoroughly.
Signs you need at least a small team
The build touches design, backend, hosting and release, runs longer than a month, or will need someone answering questions after launch.
Should you hire an Indian agency instead of freelancers?
Hire an agency when the project needs more people than a small team can provide, or when your procurement department insists on a vendor with formal contracts, insurance and a bench of replacements. Large ERP roll-outs, multi-country platforms and projects with separate QA, DevOps and design streams fit here.
What you pay for is coordination. Agencies carry account managers, sales staff and office costs, and those show up in the rate. You may also find that the senior engineer who impressed you in the pitch is not the one writing your code; ask for named people in the contract if that matters.
For a defined build of the size most small and mid-sized businesses need, an agency often adds layers without adding much quality. The honest test: if the agency team assigned to you would be three or four people anyway, you are paying overhead for a structure you are not using.
- Ask who exactly will write the code, by name
- Ask what happens to your repository if you end the contract
- Ask whether offshore staff are employees or subcontractors
- Get the rate card for change requests before signing
Dedicated developers, employer of record and your own entity
A dedicated developer works only on your product, full time, usually for months or years. You can get one in three ways, and they differ mainly in who employs the person.
A staffing vendor employs the developer and bills you monthly per seat; simple to start, but the vendor sets pay and can move people. An employer of record (EOR) service legally employs the developer you choose and handles Indian payroll, provident fund, insurance and statutory benefits for a monthly fee. Your own Indian entity gives full control but means company registration, local accounting and compliance, which only makes sense once you plan a sizeable team.
Direct full-time employment in India brings obligations that contractors do not, such as provident fund contributions, gratuity and notice rules. Take advice from an Indian employment adviser or an EOR provider before you convert a contractor into what is effectively a full-time employee, because misclassification risk falls on the client.
A dedicated seat is the right call when you have a product roadmap, a technical lead on your side, and enough steady work to keep someone busy every week. Without those three, you pay for idle hours.
How do I decide which hiring model is right for my project?
Answer four questions honestly and the model usually chooses itself. The mistake to avoid is picking the model first because a salesperson or a blog post praised it.
1. Is the scope known?
If you can list the screens, roles and integrations today, a project quote from a freelance team or agency works. If the scope will change weekly, a dedicated developer paid for time fits better.
2. How long does the work last?
Weeks to a few months: project model. A year or more of steady work: dedicated seat, EOR hire or your own team.
3. Who manages it on your side?
No technical manager in-house? Choose a team that brings its own planning, not a solo contractor who waits for tickets.
4. How big is the failure cost?
If a two-week slip would cost you a launch or a funding round, pay for redundancy: at least two people who know the code.
Many clients who hire developers in India use two models in sequence: a project build with a small team first, then a part-time or dedicated arrangement once the product is live. See dedicated monthly developer vs project model for how that switch works.
How much does it cost to hire developers in India?
It depends far more on the model and the scope than on the city. Quotes from Indian developers vary widely, and the spread comes from a handful of factors you can control.
Under a project model, you pay for a defined outcome. With us, a static site starts at US$150 (₹10,000), an app at US$600 (₹40,000), and custom software at US$900 (₹60,000). Under a dedicated model, you pay a monthly amount per person whether the week was busy or quiet. Under employment, you also pay statutory costs and your own management time.
What drives the number up: seniority of the people involved, the number of user roles and integrations, custom design versus a component library, test coverage, data migration, and how much of the project management the vendor carries for you. What should not drive it: your nationality or your currency.
- Seniority and specialisation (AI, data, native mobile cost more to do well)
- Integrations with payment, ERP, CRM or government systems
- Design effort: custom screens versus a proven component kit
- Testing depth and documentation you require
- Who carries project management and QA

Hidden costs when you hire developers in India
The rate on the proposal is rarely the full cost. Budget for the items below before comparing offers, because a cheap quote that ignores them often ends up the expensive one.
Your own time is the largest hidden cost. A solo contractor with no planning support can take several hours a week of your attention in reviews and clarifications. Rework is next: an unclear brief produces the wrong feature, and paying to rebuild it doubles the spend on that part.
Transfer costs matter at small sizes. Platform service fees on marketplaces, bank wire charges and currency spreads all eat into the budget; Wise is often the lighter option for clients abroad, though you should compare for your own bank. Finally, knowledge loss: if the only person who understands your system leaves, the next developer spends paid days just reading the code.
- Your management hours per week
- Rework from unclear requirements
- Platform, wire and currency conversion charges
- Onboarding time if the developer changes
- Hosting, app store and third-party API fees (paid by you, in your accounts)
How to vet Indian developers before you commit
Vet the work, the communication and the paperwork, in that order. A strong portfolio from someone who goes silent for four days is still a risk.
Ask for live products, not screenshots: a website you can open, an app you can install from Google Play or the App Store, a demo login for a portal. Then ask the developer to walk you through one decision they made on it and why. People who built the thing can explain it; people who borrowed a portfolio cannot.
Next, run a small paid first milestone with a clear deliverable, such as one working screen with its API. You learn how they estimate, how they report progress and how they react to feedback, for a fraction of the full budget. Finally, read how they propose to handle code, credentials and payments. Our own software hiring guide goes deeper on requirements and IP.
- Live links and a demo login, opened on your own device
- A walkthrough of one real technical decision
- A small paid milestone before the full commitment
- Written scope, stages, and ownership terms
- A named backup person if the lead is unavailable
Risk controls every offshore engagement needs
Whatever model you choose, a few controls protect you. None of them are expensive; skipping them is what gets expensive.
Keep the source code in a repository your organisation owns (GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket), with the developers added as members. Keep cloud, domain, hosting, Play Console and App Store Connect accounts in your name, with the team invited as users. Pay in stages tied to visible work on a staging link, never the full amount upfront. Keep credentials in a password manager instead of chat messages.
Agree in writing that the code, designs and content become yours on payment, and that any third-party or open-source components are listed. If you share customer data or unreleased plans, ask for an NDA before you do; we are open to discussing yours, and the terms go into your written quote. Our terms describe the default position.
- Repository owned by you
- Accounts in your name, team added as users
- Staged payments against staging-link progress
- Ownership and third-party components stated in writing
- Shared password manager, not chat, for secrets
Time zones and communication with developers in India
India runs on IST, UTC+5:30, with no daylight saving. That gives a morning overlap with the UK and Europe, an evening or early-morning overlap with the US, and most of the working day with the Gulf, Singapore and Australia.
Treat the gap as a relay, not a problem. You write feedback at the end of your day; the team works through it during theirs; you wake to a new staging build. It works when feedback is consolidated and written, and fails when every decision waits for a live call.
Our rhythm is simple: a short written update on WhatsApp or email each working day, a staging link that always shows the latest build, and a video call at milestones at a time that suits your calendar. We reply on WhatsApp seven days a week in IST hours. For more on async working see how remote development works from India.
Which skills and stacks can you hire developers in India for?
Almost any mainstream stack. India's developer pool is large across JavaScript, Python, Java, PHP and mobile frameworks; the hard part is finding someone good in the specific combination you need, not finding the language.
For our three-person team the working stack is deliberately narrow, so each of us can read the others' code. Web: TypeScript, React, Next.js and Astro on the front; Node.js or Python (Django, FastAPI) behind; PostgreSQL or MySQL for data. Mobile: Flutter or React Native for Android and iOS from one codebase. Cloud: AWS, with Docker where it helps. AI: LLM APIs, retrieval over your documents, and workflow tools.
If your product runs on something else, such as a large Java enterprise suite, native iOS in Swift at scale, or embedded hardware, we will say so and you should look for a specialist. Hiring a generalist into a niche stack is one of the quieter ways offshore projects go wrong.
What Indian clients should know when hiring developers in India
If you are a business inside India, the model question is the same but the details differ. Payments go by UPI or bank transfer, conversations happen in Hindi or English as you prefer, and many of your users will be on Android phones with patchy mobile data.
Ask any developer you hire to test on a budget Android phone on a 4G connection, not just on their own laptop. Ask whether the site or app can show Hindi or a regional language if your customers need it. For online stores, confirm UPI and card checkout are part of the scope, not an extra. If you need GST-compliant invoices from your own software, list that as a requirement at the start.
Local presence matters less than people expect. Most of our Indian clients never meet us in person; they judge us on the staging link and the speed of replies. The Indian freelance developer overview covers this in more depth.
Example: hiring developers in India for a booking portal
Here is a hypothetical scenario, not a client story, showing how the model choice plays out. A physiotherapy chain in the UK with six clinics wants an online booking portal: patients book and pay, therapists see their diaries, the head office sees reports.
Option one, a solo marketplace freelancer, is the cheapest on paper, but the owner has no technical manager and the work touches payments and health data. Option two, an agency, sends a proposal with a project manager, a designer, two developers and QA, priced for a six-month engagement. Option three, a small freelance team, quotes the defined build as a custom web app starting at US$900, 6–12 weeks, itemised by module.
In this scenario the freelance team fits: the scope is clear, it needs design, backend and hosting under one roof, and once live the chain needs only light monthly upkeep. If the chain later planned a product for hundreds of clinics with a full-time roadmap, the answer would shift toward a dedicated hire.
Checklist before you hire developers in India
Run through this list before you sign anything. If you cannot tick an item, fix it first; each one is cheaper to settle before work starts than after.
- One-page brief: goal, users, must-have features, nice-to-haves, budget band
- Hiring model chosen on scope, duration and who manages it
- Two or three shortlisted options sent the same brief
- Live work checked on your own devices
- Small paid first milestone agreed
- Repository, cloud and store accounts created in your name
- Staged payment plan tied to visible progress
- Ownership, third-party components and confidentiality in writing
- Support after launch defined: who, how long, what it costs
- Named backup person if the lead developer is away
Once those are ticked, the day-to-day becomes simple. Our guide to hiring a freelance developer directly covers the platform-versus-direct question if you are still deciding where to look.
Handover and exit: what happens when the project ends
Plan the exit on day one. A good engagement ends with you able to hand the system to anyone else without asking the original developers for permission.
At launch we hand over the repository, a short README on how to run and deploy the project, environment variable names (values stay in your password manager), admin logins, and a list of every renewal date: domain, SSL, hosting, app store memberships and paid APIs. For apps, releases sit in your Play Console and App Store Connect accounts.
After launch you get two months of free maintenance for fixes, updates and small changes. After that you can keep us on from US$120/mo (₹8,000/mo) a month, move to your own staff, or bring in another team. The point of owning everything is that the choice stays yours.
Freelance developers across India
Because we work remotely, the city you or your developers sit in matters less than the process. Our clients span metros and smaller cities: firms in Nellore and Rajahmundry, manufacturers in Sivakasi and Bhilwara, traders in Vapi and Navsari, institutions in Roorkee and Davanagere, and businesses in Dibrugarh and Margao.
For overseas buyers the same holds in reverse: you can hire developers in India without caring which city they live in, as long as the overlap hours, communication and paperwork work. See our country pages for the USA, UK and Australia, or the full India page.
