What is an offshore web development team?
An offshore web development team is a group of developers based in another country who build, run and improve your web products while you manage them remotely. The work itself is the same as with a local team: planning, design, code, testing, deployment and maintenance. What changes is distance, time zone, contracts and payment.
The term usually brings to mind a large vendor with hundreds of engineers and a project manager in the middle. That is one model. Another, which is ours, is a small offshore web development team of senior generalists where the client talks to the builders directly. Both work; they solve different problems.
BtechWaleTech is three freelance developers in India. One of us leads full-stack development, another of us covers AWS, data, AI and technical SEO, and the third of us handles project management, data science and automation. Every message you send is read by someone who can also change the code.
Small offshore team or large offshore vendor: which should you choose?
Choose a small team when your product needs one coherent group to own it end to end; choose a large vendor when you need headcount, parallel workstreams or formal procurement. The mistake is choosing on hourly rate alone, because the two models fail in different ways.
Large vendors are strong at scale. They can staff ten developers next month, provide security certifications, and absorb attrition with a bench. The cost is distance from the work: requirements pass through a manager, the developers may rotate, and context is lost at every handoff. Founders often describe explaining the product again to each new face.
A small offshore web development team trades scale for continuity. The same people carry the context from the first call to year three. Decisions are quick because the person you speak to is the person who will implement. The ceiling is real, though: three developers cannot run five workstreams at once.
A small team fits when
You are building a website, a web app, an MVP or maintaining an existing product, and you value direct access and continuity over raw headcount.
A large vendor fits when
You need many developers at once, vendor certifications, strict procurement, dedicated QA departments or round-the-clock shifts.
Why build an offshore web development team in India?
India has one of the largest pools of software developers in the world, English is the common working language of the industry, and web development skills in modern stacks such as React, Next.js, Node.js and Python are widely available. For many clients, the combination of skill, communication and value is the reason to look here.
Time zone can be an advantage rather than a problem. IST runs ahead of Europe and the Americas, so work done during the Indian day can be waiting when a client in London or New York starts the morning. Clients in the Gulf, Singapore and Japan get strong overlap during their own working day.
India is not automatically cheaper in a way that justifies weak process. The value comes from a team that communicates well, writes maintainable code and hands over cleanly. Judge any offshore web development team on those things first and on the price second.
For country-specific notes, see our pages for clients in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, Singapore and Japan.
How does an offshore web development team handle time zones?
By agreeing a rhythm, not by pretending the gap does not exist. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year with no daylight saving, which makes the offset to your city predictable within an hour.
For the UK, IST is four and a half to five and a half hours ahead, so an Indian afternoon overlaps a British morning comfortably. For the US East Coast, the gap is nine and a half to ten and a half hours; a call in your early morning or our late evening works, and most of the rest is written. For Australia’s east coast, you are four and a half to five and a half hours ahead of us, giving an easy overlap in your afternoon. The UAE is an hour and a half behind IST, almost the same working day.
We keep the written side strong so that meetings are few and short: daily or twice-weekly notes on what shipped, what is blocked and what we need from you, with a staging link to see the change yourself. WhatsApp messages get replies seven days a week in IST; scheduled calls are arranged around your hours.
Communication with an offshore team: what good looks like
Good offshore communication is boring and predictable. You should never have to chase for a status update or guess whether work is happening.
Here is what we set up at the start of each engagement. One shared channel, usually WhatsApp or email, depending on your preference. A written brief and itemised quote that becomes the single reference for scope. A staging environment where every change appears before it reaches production. A short written update at an agreed cadence. And a clear rule for new ideas: they are written down, priced as separate lines and scheduled, so the original deadline stays honest.
We also write down decisions. When you choose an option on a call, it goes into the project notes, so there is no argument three weeks later about what was agreed.
- One agreed channel, not five
- Written scope that both sides reference
- Staging link for every change
- Regular written updates, not only calls
- Changes priced and scheduled, never silently absorbed

How much does an offshore web development team cost?
With us, costs are per project, with USD starting points: websites from US$150, SEO websites from US$300, online stores from US$750, web apps from US$900, mobile apps from US$600 and AI automation from US$600. Maintenance after the free two months starts at US$120/mo.
Across the offshore market, rates vary widely, and comparing hourly figures alone is misleading. A vendor’s hourly rate includes management and sales layers; a marketplace rate adds platform fees; a lower rate may come with more hours or more rework. The useful comparison is total cost for a defined scope, plus the cost of your own time managing the team.
Ask every offshore web development team for an itemised quote against the same written brief. Check whether it includes deployment, testing, documentation and post-launch fixes. Then add your management time: a team that needs daily supervision costs more than its invoice.

Project-based, ongoing or overflow: engagement options with a small offshore team
Most clients start with a defined project and continue with maintenance. That keeps risk low: you judge the team on real delivery before committing to anything longer.
Defined project
A website, store, web app or MVP with an itemised quote and staged payments. Starting points range from US$150 for a website to US$900 for a web app.
Ongoing maintenance and improvements
After two free months, a maintenance arrangement from US$120/mo covers updates, fixes and small features; larger features are quoted separately.
Agency overflow
Agencies abroad send builds they sell to their own clients. Branding, confidentiality and turnaround are agreed in writing per engagement.
Product phases
For startups, version one is scoped tightly, then later phases are quoted once real users have shaped priorities.
What we do not offer: large dedicated teams that grow on demand, staff placed at your office, or round-the-clock shifts. If you need those, see dedicated developer models for the trade-offs.
How to vet an offshore web development team before signing
Vet the people who will actually write your code, not the sales deck. With a large vendor, ask to meet the assigned developers before signing; with a small team, you already are.
Look at live products you can use, not only case-study pages. Ask for a walkthrough of a repository with commit history. Ask how a release is deployed and rolled back. Ask who owns the cloud account in their current projects. Give a small paid first milestone, such as a working login and one screen on staging, and judge communication during that week as much as the code.
Listen for specifics. A strong offshore web development team says “we would use PostgreSQL here because your orders and invoices must stay consistent” rather than “we are experts in all technologies”.
- Meet the actual developers, not only a manager
- Live products and a real repository to review
- Written ownership of code, cloud and domains
- Itemised quote against your written brief
- Staged payments linked to visible progress
- A paid first milestone before the full commitment

IP ownership, contracts and NDAs with an offshore team
Intellectual property should belong to you, and the setup should make that obvious before any contract clause is needed. Code lives in your Git organisation, hosting runs in your cloud account, domains are registered to you, and app store listings sit in your developer accounts.
Put scope, price, payment stages and ownership in writing. For many projects the approved itemised quote plus confirmed email is sufficient; larger or sensitive projects may warrant a formal contract. If you need an NDA or particular IP assignment wording before sharing details, ask us; terms are agreed in writing, and our general terms are on the terms page.
Clients sometimes worry about enforcing a contract across borders. The practical protection is structural: when the code, cloud and domains are already yours, there is nothing to withhold. That is worth more than any clause.
Security and data protection when working offshore
Treat an offshore web development team like any other contributor: give it the access it needs and nothing more, and be able to revoke it in minutes.
We work through individual accounts you invite, never shared logins. Production credentials stay in your cloud’s secret store rather than in code or chat. Access to production data is limited to what a task needs; for development we prefer anonymised or sample data. Changes go through version control so every line has an author and a date. When an engagement ends, you remove our accounts and nothing else changes.
If your business falls under GDPR, Australian privacy law, or sector rules, tell us at the brief stage. We can host data in the region you choose, keep personal data out of development environments and document how data flows. Any data processing terms you need are agreed in writing; we do not claim certifications we do not hold.
UK-specific notes, including GDPR expectations, are on web developer for UK clients.
Common risks with an offshore web development team, and the controls that work
Offshore projects fail in predictable ways. Each risk has a plain control, and most of them cost nothing.
- Vague scope: fix it with a written brief and itemised quote before any payment
- Silent progress: require a staging link and regular written updates
- Lost access: keep repositories, cloud and domains in your accounts from day one
- Key-person dependency: ask who else knows the code; with us, two teammates do
- Quality drift: review pull requests or ask for short demo videos of each feature
- Payment exposure: stage payments against working features, never all upfront
- Knowledge loss at the end: insist on documentation as a deliverable, not an afterthought

Tech stack and tooling our offshore team uses
We choose stacks that your future in-house developers can hire for easily, because an offshore web development team should never leave you with an obscure system only it understands.
Frontends are usually React or Next.js, or Astro for content-heavy sites where speed and SEO matter most. Backends are Node.js or Python with Django or FastAPI, on PostgreSQL. Mobile apps use Flutter or React Native. Hosting is typically AWS, set up in your account with infrastructure documented, CI/CD pipelines through GitHub Actions and error tracking for production issues.
If you already have a codebase, we work inside your conventions rather than rewriting for our comfort. For WordPress, Laravel or older PHP systems, we will say honestly whether extending or replacing is cheaper over a two-year horizon.
Handover: leaving you independent of any offshore team
A good offshore engagement ends with you needing the team less, not more. We plan handover from the first week.
At each release you receive a README that lets a new developer run the project locally, a list of environment variables (without secret values), the architecture and data model, deployment and rollback steps, a register of third-party services with renewal dates, and notes on known limitations. For apps, store listing access stays in your developer accounts. You can bring the work in-house, move to another supplier or keep us on maintenance; each option is open because nothing is hidden.
This is also what we ask you to demand from any offshore web development team you consider. If handover is vague in the proposal, it will be painful at the end.
Worked example: a UK startup’s MVP with a three-person offshore team
The following is a hypothetical example to show how a small offshore engagement is shaped; it is not a client story.
A two-founder startup in Manchester needs a booking platform for independent tutors: tutor profiles, availability calendars, parent sign-up, payments and reminders. They have wireframes, a modest budget and a launch target in one quarter.
We would scope version one within the web app band from US$900: Next.js frontend, Node.js API and PostgreSQL, hosted in the founders’ AWS account in a European region, with a UK payment provider chosen by the founders. Calls happen in the UK morning, which is our afternoon; progress notes arrive at the end of our day, ready for their morning. A working login and tutor profile go onto staging early. Payments, reminders and admin tools follow, with a short hardening period before launch. After launch, two months of free maintenance cover fixes while the founders collect feedback for phase two.
Offshore web development team and India’s tech cities
Our team works remotely, so there is no single office city; clients abroad simply work with the three of us online. Indian clients do the same, from metros and smaller towns alike.
If you are comparing offshore options, our city pages describe the local business and tech context: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Noida, Gurgaon, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kochi. For the full list of countries we bill in USD, see countries.
Payments from abroad go through Wise, bank wire or PayPal, with invoices in USD. Indian clients pay by UPI or bank transfer.
