What is laundry app development, and who actually needs it?
Laundry app development is building software that takes laundry and dry-cleaning orders from customers, sends riders to collect and return them, and tracks each garment through processing. You need it when your trouble is no longer finding customers but keeping promises to them: on-time pickups, the right clothes back, and a bill nobody argues with.
Three kinds of business usually ask us. A dry cleaner with two or three counters that has started a central processing unit and keeps losing track of what went where. A wash-and-fold start-up that wants doorstep pickup in apartment societies and needs slots and riders from day one. And an established laundry whose customers keep calling “is my suit ready?” because nothing tells them.
If you run one counter, mostly for walk-ins, you may not need an app at all. Good billing software with tag printing and WhatsApp messages solves most of the pain, and we will say so honestly. The customer app earns its place when pickups become a real share of your orders.
The garment journey that laundry app development has to model
Every laundry app should mirror the physical path of a garment: received, itemised and tagged at the store or by the rider, batched and sent to the processing unit, washed or dry-cleaned, ironed, checked, packed, returned to the store and handed over. Each step is a scan, and each scan answers the question “where is it now?”.
The weak point in most laundries is the handover between store and factory. A van leaves with 14 bags and a handwritten challan; the factory counts 13 and nobody knows which one. In the software, the store scans each bag or garment into an outgoing batch, and the factory scans the same batch on arrival. Anything scanned out but not in shows up as a gap within minutes, while the driver is still there.
Coming back works the same way. Packed orders are scanned into a return batch, received at the store, and placed on a rack or shelf that the panel remembers. When the customer walks in or the rider arrives, the counter searches by name or phone and sees “Rack C, shelf 3” instead of opening every bag.
- Received: bag weight or item count, stains and damage noted with photos.
- Tagged: one barcode per garment, or per bag for wash-and-fold by weight.
- In process: wash, dry-clean, stain treatment, press, each optional per item.
- Quality check: a supervisor clears or returns an item for rework.
- Ready and delivered: rack location, rider assignment, proof of handover.
How do barcode garment tags work in laundry software?
A garment tag is a small label, often heat-resistant or pinned, printed with a barcode that the software links to one item in one order. Scanning it with a phone camera or a handheld scanner opens that item: customer, service, instructions and current stage.
Most laundries use a linear barcode such as Code 128, the symbology standardised as ISO/IEC 15417, because it packs letters and numbers into a short label and almost every scanner reads it. QR codes work too and are easier for phone cameras. The choice depends on your tag stock and printer rather than the software, and we build for whichever you prefer.
The hardware is modest: a thermal label printer at each counter and at the factory, and either a cheap USB or Bluetooth scanner or the staff’s own phone. We do not sell or install hardware; we tell you what the software supports, you buy it locally, and we test with the exact model you choose.
Per-garment or per-bag tags
Dry cleaning and premium care usually need one tag per item. Wash-and-fold sold by weight often tags the bag, not each sock. The app supports both inside the same order.
Instructions that travel with the tag
“Starch collar only”, “no machine dry”, “button missing, customer informed”: notes added at receiving appear whenever the tag is scanned, so the factory sees them without a phone call.
Per-kg vs per-piece pricing: how should a laundry app charge?
Charge per kg for everyday wash-and-fold and per piece for dry cleaning, ironing and anything delicate. A good laundry app supports both on one order, because a customer’s bag often holds a week of T-shirts and one silk saree.
Per-kg pricing is simple for the customer and fast at the counter: weigh, enter, done. It suits students, bachelors and families sending daily wear. The catch is fairness. A kilogram of towels and a kilogram of shirts cost you very differently to process, which is why many laundries set a minimum weight and exclude heavy items like blankets.
Per-piece pricing matches effort. A blazer, a lehenga and a pair of curtains each get their own rate, and fabric or service can change it: dry clean, steam press, stain treatment, starch. The app needs a price list by item and service, quick-add buttons for common items and clear totals before the customer confirms.
Packages sit on top: a monthly wash plan with a weight allowance, or prepaid credit for regular customers. Our table below compares the options by business type so you can choose before you brief anyone.
Pickup and delivery slots in laundry app development
Slots let customers choose a window for pickup and return, and let you cap how many bookings each window takes. Without caps, Sunday morning fills with forty pickups your two riders cannot reach.
In the panel you define slots per area and day, set a capacity for each, and block days when the factory is closed. Customers see only the windows still open. Return slots respect your turnaround: if dry cleaning takes 72 hours, the earliest return slot offered is three days after pickup, and express service can shorten that for a surcharge you set.
Riders see their slots as a route, with bag counts and notes such as “leave with security” or “call before coming”. If a customer is not home, the rider marks it with a reason and the booking moves to the next available slot after a confirmation message, instead of vanishing from everyone’s list.
- Area-wise slots with different capacities on weekdays and weekends.
- Express turnaround with its own price and earliest return time.
- Society or hostel pickups grouped into one stop with many bags.
- Missed pickup handling with automatic rescheduling offers.
WhatsApp status updates: which laundry messages are worth sending?
Send messages at the moments customers worry: pickup confirmed, order itemised with the bill, ready for delivery or collection, and out for delivery. Four messages per order is usually enough; more and people mute you.
These go out through the official WhatsApp Business API using approved templates, in your brand name, triggered by scans in the panel. Meta’s pricing documentation says the platform charges per delivered template message since 1 July 2025 and that utility templates sent inside an open customer service window are free. A customer who has just messaged you about their order has opened such a window, so replies and updates that follow often cost nothing, while unprompted reminders are charged.
The itemised bill message is the one that saves disputes. When a customer receives “12 items: 5 shirts, 3 trousers, 2 kurtas, 1 blazer, 1 saree” within an hour of pickup, any mismatch is raised while the bag is still at the store, not a week later at delivery. Our WhatsApp automation work covers template design and approval.
What a laundry customer app should include, and what to leave out
Keep the customer app to five jobs: book a pickup, choose services, see the itemised bill, follow the order and pay. Everything else, from wallets to referral schemes, is optional and should wait until people actually use the basics.
Booking starts with an address and a slot, then an optional service choice. Many customers do not know what they are sending until the rider arrives, so the app should allow “I’ll show the rider” and let the store itemise later. Once itemised, the bill appears in the app with photos of any stains or damage noted at pickup, and the customer approves it or raises a question.
Payment can be online by UPI or card at booking, at approval or on delivery, or cash to the rider. Monthly packages and prepaid credit are popular with hostels and families. We build the app in Flutter so Android and iPhone come from one codebase, and we add Hindi or a regional language if your customers want it, with you supplying or approving the wording.
The store and factory panel: laundry management software behind the app
The panel is the part your staff use all day, and in most laundry app development projects it matters more than the customer app. It handles receiving, itemising, pricing, tagging, batching, processing stages, quality checks, rack locations, invoices and reports.
At the counter the screen is built for speed: search by phone number, quick-add item buttons, weight entry, auto-priced lines and a print button for tags and the customer slip. At the factory the screen changes: scan a batch in, see items by service, move them through stages, and flag rework. Supervisors see bottlenecks, such as 60 items waiting for pressing, before the delivery van is due.
Reports answer the owner’s questions: orders and revenue by store, items delayed past promised time, rework rate, rider performance and outstanding payments. If your accountant uses Tally or another package, invoices can be exported so nothing is retyped. For a wider view of this kind of back-office build see our order management system page.
How much does laundry app development cost in India?
With BtechWaleTech, laundry app development starts at ₹40,000 for the customer and rider apps and ₹60,000 for the store and factory panel. A laundry that only needs counter tagging, pricing and WhatsApp status can start with the panel alone.
What pushes cost up: a separate factory with its own workflow, several stores or franchise outlets, slot capacity logic per area, packages and prepaid credit, integration with existing billing software, and data migration. What barely moves it: adding services to the price list, extra reports on data already stored, and a second language for labels.
Running costs sit in your accounts, not ours: cloud hosting, WhatsApp template charges billed by Meta, payment gateway fees, label stock, Google Play’s one-time US$25 registration and Apple’s US$99 yearly fee if you publish on iPhone. After the first two free months, maintenance starts at ₹8,000/mo. The wider budget picture is on app development cost in India.
Custom laundry app or ready-made laundry software?
Ready-made laundry software is the right first step when you run one or two stores with standard services and want to start this week. Custom laundry app development is the better choice when you need your own brand on the app stores, a factory workflow the product does not model, unusual pricing or when per-store fees keep rising.
Before signing any subscription, ask three questions. Can I export all customers, orders and garment history in a usable format? Does the app appear under my name on Google Play, or the vendor’s? What happens to pricing when I add a third store? The answers tell you how easy it would be to leave later.
A custom build takes longer and costs more at the start. In return, the code and data belong to you, there is no per-order fee to us, and the software follows your process rather than the other way round. Our general comparison is on off-the-shelf vs custom software.
How long does laundry app development take?
Most laundry app development projects take 6–10 weeks to go live: about a week of mapping your process, four to five weeks on the panel and rider app, two to three weeks on the customer app, and store review plus a pilot at one outlet.
We build the panel first because tags, prices and stages live there, and a customer app without them is just a booking form. The rider app follows, tested on real pickups while the old method runs alongside. The customer app comes last and is published under your own Google Play and Apple developer accounts.
Each week you get a test link or build and a short WhatsApp update from the third of us on what changed and what needs your decision. Delays usually come from our side needing answers, such as the final price list or the factory’s stage names, so sending those early is the fastest way to launch sooner.
Laundry app development for multiple stores, franchise outlets and a shared factory
For multi-store laundries, the app gives each outlet its own login, orders, riders and reports, while the owner sees everything, and the shared factory sees incoming batches from all stores in one queue.
Franchise setups add a layer. Each franchisee may have its own price list within limits you set, its own customers and its own settlement with the head office for factory processing. The panel keeps these separate and produces a monthly statement per franchisee, so royalty and processing charges are calculated from the same data that runs operations.
The customer app can stay single-brand: customers choose the nearest outlet automatically by address, or pick their usual store. For a wider look at running outlets under one system, see multi-branch management software.
After laundry app development: who owns the code and the customer list?
You own everything: code in a repository under your account, the database and server in a cloud account in your name, and the apps published through your own Google Play and Apple developer accounts. We work with access you grant and can remove.
For a laundry, the customer list with addresses, phone numbers, preferences and order history is the core asset. At handover you get the source code, a written description of how the system fits together, the list of third-party services and who pays for each, and admin logins. Another developer could continue from there if you ever chose to.
Personal data also brings duties under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. The app is built to collect only what orders need, restrict access by role and record who changed what. Your own legal adviser should confirm how your business meets its obligations; we make the software support them.
Technology choices and getting a laundry brand found online
We build the customer and rider apps in Flutter, the panel as a web app that runs on a counter PC or tablet, and the server on Node.js or Python with PostgreSQL, hosted in an Indian cloud region. These are mainstream tools, so any competent developer can maintain them.
Google Play’s help centre currently requires new apps and updates to target Android 16 (API level 36) or higher. Requirements like this change every year, which is one reason maintenance matters after launch: an app nobody updates eventually cannot ship fixes.
An app does not bring new customers by itself. People search “laundry near me” or “dry cleaners in [area]” on Google and in AI answers, and they find businesses with complete Google Business Profiles, clear websites and genuine reviews. A small site with your services, prices from, areas served and a booking link, built from ₹10,000, plus local SEO from ₹10,000/mo, gives you a fair chance. Nobody can honestly guarantee rankings.
Red flags and mistakes in laundry app development projects
The most common failure is a beautiful customer app with no garment tracking behind it. Bookings arrive, but clothes still move on paper, and the first mix-up costs more goodwill than the app earned.
- No tag at receiving. If garments are tagged at the factory instead of the store, the riskiest leg of the journey is untracked.
- Unlimited slots. Letting every customer choose Sunday 10 a.m. guarantees late riders and angry reviews.
- Bills after delivery. Customers should see the itemised bill before processing starts, not at the door.
- Photos skipped. A quick photo of an existing stain or tear protects you in a damage claim.
- Vendor-owned store listing. If the app is published under the developer’s account, moving away later is painful.
- Too many notifications. Ten messages per order teaches customers to ignore all of them.
Planning questions for any developer are collected on our questions to ask an app developer page.
Worked example: laundry app development for a three-store dry cleaner
A hypothetical scenario, not a real client: a dry cleaner in Pune has three counters and one processing unit, handles about 150 orders a day, and wants doorstep pickup in nearby societies. Garments go missing roughly weekly, and staff spend hours answering “is it ready?” calls.
Release one would be the panel with per-piece and per-kg price lists, barcode tagging at each counter, batch scans between counters and the factory, stage tracking, rack locations and WhatsApp messages for itemised bill, ready and out for delivery. No customer app yet; the calls should already fall because customers get updates.
Release two, about four weeks later, would add the rider app and an Android customer app with slots capped per society, bill approval and UPI payment. iPhone and monthly packages would follow once pickups become a steady share of orders.
Costs would follow modules: panel from ₹60,000, apps from ₹40,000, with an itemised quote before work begins. The owner would hold the Play Console account, the cloud account and the code repository from the first day.
Laundry app development checklist: what to prepare before you ask for a quote
These answers let any developer quote your laundry app accurately, and let you compare quotes line by line.
- Services offered: wash-and-fold, dry cleaning, steam press, shoe or carpet cleaning, alterations.
- Price list, per kg and per piece, including minimums and express surcharges.
- Number of stores, and whether processing happens in-store or in a separate unit.
- Daily order volume and the share you expect from doorstep pickups.
- Riders: your own staff, or pickups handled at the counter only?
- Tag type and printer you use today, if any.
- Messages customers should receive and at which stages.
- Payment methods: online at booking, on approval, or cash on delivery.
