Is the WhatsApp green tick still green?
No. The checkmark that marks a verified business on WhatsApp is now blue, in line with the badge Meta uses on Facebook and Instagram. People still search for WhatsApp green tick verification because the green version was familiar for years, but anyone promising you a green tick today is describing a badge that no longer exists.
Meta’s developer documentation for the WhatsApp Business Platform describes an Official Business Account as “a business phone number owned by a business that has been verified as an authentic business”, and says it displays a blue checkmark. That is the modern equivalent of the old green tick on the API side.
The colour change came with a second change in how businesses reach the badge. Alongside the free Official Business Account request, WhatsApp now offers Meta Verified for Business, a paid subscription aimed at businesses using the WhatsApp Business app. The two routes sit on different products, have different rules and suit different businesses, which is why so much advice online feels contradictory.
What stayed the same
The badge still tells customers the account belongs to a real business Meta has reviewed. It does not add extra messaging features by itself.
What changed
The colour, the branding under Meta Verified, and a paid path for smaller businesses that could never pass the notability test.
Official Business Account or Meta Verified: which route fits you?
Pick the Official Business Account route if you already run on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) and your brand gets independent press coverage; pick Meta Verified if you use the WhatsApp Business app on a phone and want a paid path with support and impersonation protection.
The OBA request is free but merit-based. You file it from WhatsApp Manager or through the API, and a reviewer decides whether your business is well known enough. Most small shops, clinics and local service businesses that attempt WhatsApp green tick verification this way are declined on notability, not on paperwork.
Meta Verified for Business works differently. The WhatsApp Help Center describes it as a paid monthly subscription that comes with account support, impersonation protection and the option to apply for a verified badge. The same help pages are careful to say that subscribing does not automatically put a badge on your account: your business is either verified from its activity across Meta, or you are asked for documents, and submitting documents does not guarantee verification.
- On the API with real press coverage → request an Official Business Account
- On the Business app, small or local → consider Meta Verified
- On the API but not yet notable → build evidence, keep messaging quality high, request later
- Unsure which product you use → check whether you log in through WhatsApp Manager or the phone app
WhatsApp green tick verification requirements on the Business Platform
Five boxes must be ticked before an Official Business Account request is even looked at. Meta’s documentation lists them plainly, and missing any one gets an automatic no.
First, your account must follow the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy. Second, the business must have been on the WhatsApp Business Platform for at least 30 days. Third, business verification must be complete in your Meta Business portfolio. Fourth, two-step verification must be switched on for the phone number. Fifth, the display name must be approved.
These are table stakes for WhatsApp green tick verification, not a scorecard. Ticking all five tells Meta you are a real, compliant business; the actual badge decision then turns on notability. We still find that a surprising share of first requests fail on the basics, usually because business verification was done under a trading name while the documents carry the legal name, or because the display name was edited recently and is back in review.
- Policy compliance: no bans, no warnings for spam or misleading messages
- 30 days or more on the WhatsApp Business Platform
- Business verification complete in the Meta Business portfolio
- Two-step verification enabled on the number
- Display name approved
What does notability mean for WhatsApp green tick verification?
Notability means Meta sees your business as a well-known, often searched brand, and it judges that mostly from independent news coverage. It is the step where most Indian SMEs fall short, and no amount of form-filling fixes it.
Guidance that Meta’s messaging partners publish on the Official Business Account review asks for around five supporting links from established publications with sizeable audiences, the kind of national business and news titles that report on companies because the story matters, not because they were paid. The same guidance says paid or promotional content, including business and app listings, is not taken into consideration.
That rules out a lot of what gets sold as “green tick packages”: sponsored posts, press-release wire pickups, directory profiles and self-published blogs. Reviewers can usually spot a paid article, and it adds nothing to your case. What helps is genuine coverage: a funding round reported by business media, a regional newspaper feature about your hospital’s new wing, an interview in a trade publication, a Wikipedia article that exists because others wrote about you.
Counts in your favour
Independent articles in established news and business outlets that name your brand exactly as your display name does.
Carries little or no weight
Paid features, press-release syndication, directory and app-store listings, your own blog and social posts.
How brand search and your website affect the review
A reviewer who types your business name into a search engine should find one clear, consistent business that matches your WhatsApp display name. If they find three different spellings, an old address and a parked domain, the case weakens even if the paperwork is perfect.
Start with your website. The name in the header, the about page and the footer should match the display name exactly, with the legal entity named somewhere visible. If your brand differs from the registered company name, say so on the site (“Sunrise Dental is a brand of…”). Contact details should match those in your Meta Business portfolio.
Then look at what surrounds the site. A verified Google Business Profile with the same name and address, social handles that use the same brand, and no orphaned old pages under previous names. Brand searches themselves grow slowly with real marketing and SEO; nobody can manufacture them overnight, and nobody can guarantee rankings for your name. What we can do is make sure that when someone does search, the first page tells a single, consistent story.
- Exact brand name in site header, about page and footer
- Legal entity named, with the brand-to-company link explained
- Same address and phone across website, Meta and Google
- Old brand names redirected or retired
Display-name rules that trip up WhatsApp green tick verification
Your display name must be approved before any badge request, and a name that later changes goes back into review. Getting it right once saves weeks.
Meta’s display-name guidelines, as summarised in its messaging partners’ documentation, expect the name to represent your business, product, service or department and to have a clear link to the business that shows on your website. The name should not be a person’s full name, a generic word such as “Fashion”, a generic place such as a city name, or a slogan. It should use normal, grammatically correct capitalisation rather than all capitals, avoid emojis and decorative symbols, and follow the brand exactly as it appears elsewhere.
Changing names is allowed but limited. Meta’s developer documentation says a display name can be changed 10 times in a 30-day period, and that after approval you have 14 days to re-register the number or the name must be submitted again. Constant renaming also looks odd to a reviewer, so decide the final name before you file anything.
- “Sharma Sweets” matching the shop board and website → fine
- “SHARMA SWEETS 🍬 Best in Town” → all caps, emoji and slogan
- “Rahul Sharma” for the shop number → personal full name
- “Sweets Jaipur” → generic term plus place
Meta business verification: documents Indian businesses use
Business verification proves to Meta that your legal entity exists and that you control it. For Indian businesses, the documents that usually line up well are the GST registration certificate, the certificate of incorporation for companies and LLPs, a shop and establishment licence for proprietors, or a utility bill in the business name.
The details you type into the Meta Business portfolio must match the document word for word: legal name, registered address and, where asked, the phone number or domain. A proprietor trading as “Green Leaf Organics” whose GST certificate reads the proprietor’s own name needs to enter the legal name and then show the trading name link elsewhere, typically on the website.
Verification is also where domain and email checks come in. Meta may confirm control through an email on your business domain or a code on your website. A Gmail address and no website makes this harder. We handle this part on a screen share, so you upload documents yourself and nothing sensitive sits on our side. For the full API onboarding sequence, our WhatsApp Business API integration page walks through each step.
How to request WhatsApp green tick verification step by step
Once the prerequisites are met, the request itself takes a few minutes. The preparation before it is what decides the outcome.
- Open WhatsApp Manager in your Meta Business portfolio and select the phone number.
- Confirm two-step verification is on for that number; switch it on if not.
- Go to the number’s profile section and find the Official Business Account option.
- Submit the request, adding your strongest independent coverage links where the form allows.
- Keep the display name and business details unchanged while the review runs.
- Note the date; if declined, the next request can go in 30 days later.
Developers can also request the status through the API, which Meta documents under its Official Business Account status endpoint. Either way the reviewer sees the same information. We prefer WhatsApp Manager for first requests, with you logged in and us guiding, because it keeps the record in your account and you can see every field before submission.
Meta Verified works through a different door: the subscription option appears in the WhatsApp Business app settings for eligible accounts. If it does not show for your number, you are not currently eligible for that route.
Meta Verified is the paid route to a verified badge for businesses using the WhatsApp Business app. It is a subscription, billed monthly by Meta, and its value is broader than the badge.
According to the WhatsApp Help Center, the subscription includes account support, protection against impersonation and the option to apply for a verified badge. Eligibility conditions listed there include being 18 or older, a phone number registered in a country where Meta Verified for WhatsApp is available, some history on the WhatsApp Business app, at least one message sent recently, a profile name and profile picture, and not already holding a WhatsApp Business Premium subscription or a Meta Verified subscription through Meta Business Suite.
Two points matter before you pay. The help pages say subscribing does not automatically give you a badge, and that submitting documents does not guarantee verification. And the subscription attaches to the Business app, so if you later move your number to the WhatsApp Business Platform for automation, the verification question starts again on the API side. Meta sets the price in the app; check it there rather than trusting figures quoted in adverts.
Is WhatsApp green tick verification worth chasing for a small business?
Often not right away. A badge helps most where impersonation is a real risk or where customers must trust a message before acting on it, such as banks, hospitals, airlines, large retailers and consumer brands with many lookalike accounts. For a neighbourhood bakery or a three-person consultancy, customers already know the number.
There is also a quieter reason the badge matters less than it used to. Meta’s developer documentation says the approved display name appears in individual chats and chat lists once a number passes display-name verification. So a verified business with an approved name already shows customers who is writing, badge or not.
The things that make customers trust a WhatsApp number day to day are more ordinary: a recognisable name and logo, messages they asked for, no spam, quick replies and a business profile with a real address and website. Those also protect your messaging limits, which matter more for sales than a checkmark.
Chase the badge when
Your brand has independent press coverage, you face impersonation, or customers act on messages involving money or health.
Park it when
You are local, new to the platform or have little coverage; focus on message quality and a strong profile instead.
WhatsApp green tick verification rejected? What to do next
A declined WhatsApp green tick verification request is not a ban and changes nothing about how your number works. Meta’s documentation says that after a denied request you must wait 30 days before submitting another, and that you can keep editing your business profile, picture, email, website and description in the meantime.
Use those 30 days properly rather than resubmitting the same case. First, rule out the basics: is the display name still approved, is two-step verification on, does business verification show as complete? If all five prerequisites hold, the decision was almost certainly about notability, and only new independent coverage will change it.
Then look honestly at your evidence. Count the independent articles that name your brand exactly. Remove any paid features from the list you plan to submit. Check that your website and Google Business Profile tell the same story as your Meta portfolio. If the coverage simply is not there yet, the smarter move is to wait months, not 30 days, and put the energy into work that earns coverage: launches, community projects, data your industry cares about.
- Day 1: confirm prerequisites and note the retry date
- Week 1: evidence audit, drop paid and promotional links
- Weeks 2–3: fix website, profile and naming mismatches
- Day 30+: request again only if the case is genuinely stronger
Red flags: people selling a guaranteed WhatsApp green tick
Anyone who guarantees WhatsApp green tick verification for a fee is either misunderstanding the process or misleading you. Meta reviews each request itself, and the notability test cannot be bought.
Watch for sellers who ask you to move your number onto their own provider account, who want your Facebook login or OTPs, or who bundle “50 guaranteed press articles” into the package. Paid articles are exactly the kind of evidence the review guidance says it ignores, and handing over logins can cost you the account entirely. A green checkmark shown in a screenshot, or a green tick emoji in a display name, is not verification either; the latter will get the name rejected.
A fair helper tells you the likely outcome before charging for anything, keeps the account in your business portfolio, and prices the preparation work rather than the badge. That is how we quote: platform setup, naming and website work are itemised, and the badge line reads “Meta decides”.
- “100% guaranteed tick” or “money back if not verified” claims
- Requests for your personal Facebook password or login codes
- Paid press bundles sold as notability
- Your number registered under the seller’s business portfolio
- A green tick emoji added to your display name
How long does WhatsApp green tick verification take?
For WhatsApp green tick verification, plan on at least five to six weeks from a fresh start, because the platform’s 30-day minimum is built in before you can even ask. The review after that is out of anyone’s control.
A realistic sequence for a new API account looks like this. Week one: Meta Business portfolio set up, business verification submitted, number connected, two-step verification on, display name submitted. Weeks one to two: verification and display-name approval, usually faster when documents match cleanly. Days 30 onward: the Official Business Account request can go in. The reviewer’s answer arrives when it arrives; we don’t quote a turnaround for Meta’s side.
Businesses already on the platform for months can request straight away once the prerequisites check out. The slowest cases are those where the evidence needs building, which can take a season or longer, because genuine coverage follows real news. Meanwhile your messaging keeps working normally, and the messaging-limit tiers Meta applies, starting at 250 unique users in a rolling 24 hours for newly created business portfolios according to its documentation, rise with good quality, badge or no badge.
Building customer trust on WhatsApp while the badge waits
You can earn most of the benefit of WhatsApp green tick verification without the badge. Customers judge a number by what it sends, how it looks and whether it helps them.
Complete the business profile: logo, description, address, hours, email and website. Put the WhatsApp number on your website, invoices, packaging and Google profile so customers can check it against something they already trust. Send only messages people asked for, such as order updates from a WooCommerce WhatsApp integration or dues from WhatsApp payment reminder automation, and keep marketing separate and occasional.
Warn customers about impersonation in plain words: “We will only message you from this number; we never ask for OTPs.” Report lookalike accounts through WhatsApp’s in-app reporting. And reply quickly. A fast, polite answer from a named business does more for trust than a checkmark on a slow, spammy account.
Worked example: a diagnostic lab chain weighs the two routes
A hypothetical to show the decision. Say a diagnostic lab chain with branches across Uttar Pradesh sends test reports and home-collection slots on the WhatsApp Business Platform, and patients have started receiving fake messages from lookalike numbers asking for payment.
The audit would start with the five prerequisites. Suppose business verification was done under the brand name while the incorporation certificate carries a different legal name; that gets corrected first, with the brand-to-company link added to the website. The display name is changed from all capitals to normal case and resubmitted.
Then the evidence for its WhatsApp green tick verification case. The chain might find two independent newspaper reports about a new branch, one trade-journal interview and several paid health-portal listings. The listings come off the list. With three genuine links, the honest advice would be to request once the other fixes settle, expect a possible rejection, and use any 30-day wait to publish a proper press page on the site and pursue coverage of an upcoming launch.
Meanwhile the anti-impersonation work goes ahead regardless: a “we never ask for payment on unknown numbers” line on every report message, the number printed on receipts, and a Google profile that matches. We would not promise the badge; the lab would judge progress by fewer confused patient calls.
WhatsApp green tick verification checklist before you file
Go through this list honestly. If more than two lines are shaky, fix them first; a rejection costs you 30 days.
- Number on the WhatsApp Business Platform for 30 days or more
- Business verification complete, legal name matching documents
- Two-step verification enabled on the number
- Display name approved and unchanged recently
- Display name matches website header, about page and signage
- Brand-to-legal-entity link stated on the website
- Five or so independent articles naming the brand exactly
- No paid features, listings or press releases in the evidence
- Google Business Profile and social handles consistent
- Messaging quality good: no spam warnings, low block rates
- Business profile complete with logo, address, website and hours
If you are on the Business app instead, the Meta Verified checklist is shorter: profile name and picture set, recent activity, and the subscription option visible in settings. For help deciding whether to move to the API at all, see our WhatsApp Business API cost in India breakdown.
