Why a Wix to WordPress migration is a rebuild, not an export
There is no file you can download from Wix and upload to WordPress, so the move is a rebuild. The Wix Help Center says plainly that a Wix site must run on Wix's servers because the platform depends on its own proprietary technology, and it does not support external hosting.
That shapes every decision on this page. Your design exists only inside the Wix editor, so it has to be recreated as a WordPress theme. Your text and images can be copied, but not as one tidy package. Some data does come out in structured form: Wix lets you export contacts to a CSV file, up to 50,000 at a time, and blog content can be read from the site's RSS feed. Everything else, from page layouts to form settings, gets rebuilt.
Automated "Wix to WordPress" converters exist, and some are useful for pulling blog posts. None of them recreate a layout faithfully, and none of them know which of your old URLs matter to Google. Treat any tool as a starting point for the content, never as the whole Wix to WordPress migration.
- Comes out as data: contacts (CSV), blog posts (via RSS or a scraper), product lists where your plan allows
- Copied by hand: page text, images, alt text, SEO titles and descriptions
- Rebuilt from scratch: design, menus, forms, bookings, member areas, checkout
- Recreated on the new host: redirects, sitemap, analytics and Search Console
Should you leave Wix for WordPress at all?
Move when Wix is limiting the business, not just because WordPress is popular. The good reasons are specific: you want your site on hosting you control, you need a plugin or integration Wix cannot offer, your blog has outgrown the Wix editor, or you want developers anywhere to be able to work on the code.
Stay on Wix if the site is small, you edit it yourself happily, and it already brings in the enquiries you need. A migration costs money and carries short-term search risk, so it has to buy you something concrete.
Move when
You need full control of hosting and code; you publish often and want better editorial tools; you need WooCommerce, a custom booking flow, a membership system or a CRM integration; or you plan to grow past a few dozen pages.
Stay when
The site has fewer than ten pages, you rarely change it, and the monthly Wix plan costs you less effort than looking after WordPress updates, backups and plugins.
Consider a third option when
Speed and security matter more than self-editing. A static or custom-coded site can beat both; our page on moving from Wix to a custom website covers that route.

Step one of any Wix to WordPress migration: take an inventory
Before anyone touches WordPress, list everything the Wix site contains. A missed page becomes a 404 after launch; a missed form becomes lost enquiries you never hear about.
We build the inventory as a shared Google Sheet. One row per URL, pulled from the Wix sitemap and from Google Search Console's pages report, so we also catch old addresses that still get clicks even if they are no longer in the menu. Columns record the page type, its title and description, whether it gets search traffic, and where it will live in WordPress.
A second tab lists every Wix app and feature in use: forms, bookings, chat, pop-ups, member logins, stores, events, pricing plans. For each one we note the WordPress replacement and whether it needs a plugin, custom code or simply a link to an outside service.
- All URLs from the Wix sitemap plus Search Console's indexed pages
- Top landing pages by clicks over the last 12 months
- Every form, where its submissions go and who reads them
- Wix apps in use and what each one does for the business
- Third-party scripts: analytics, pixels, chat widgets
- Domain registrar, DNS records and email provider
How content actually moves from Wix to WordPress
Content moves in three streams: blog posts in bulk, static pages by hand, and media alongside both. Mixing them up is where most DIY migrations go wrong.
Blog posts are the only stream that can be partly automated. WordPress ships with an RSS importer, documented on developer.wordpress.org, which can pull posts from a feed. Wix feeds do not always carry every post or the full body, so for large blogs we script the extraction from the live pages instead and check the result against the inventory.
Static pages are rebuilt by hand in the block editor. That sounds slow, but it is where quality comes from: headings get fixed so each page has one H1, text gets split into readable blocks, and buttons point to the right places. Images are downloaded at their original size, compressed, renamed with sensible file names and re-uploaded with their alt text.
Finally, internal links. Wix pages link to other Wix URLs. After the move, every internal link is rewritten to its new WordPress address, so visitors never bounce through a redirect inside your own site.
How do I keep my Google rankings when moving from Wix to WordPress?
Keep rankings by making every old URL resolve to the closest new one with a permanent redirect, and by keeping titles and content intact. Google's own site-move documentation recommends HTTP permanent redirects such as 301 or 308 and says to keep them for as long as possible, generally at least a year.
Wix and WordPress use different URL patterns for blog posts, products and dynamic pages, so addresses change even when the domain stays the same. The redirect map is the spine of a Wix to WordPress migration: a two-column list of old and new URLs, one row per page that exists or ever received clicks. We add it to the server or a redirect plugin, then test each line before the domain switches.
If you keep the same domain, Google's Change of Address tool is not needed; Google says it is only for moves from one domain or subdomain to another. What you do need is a fresh XML sitemap submitted in Search Console and patience. Google notes that medium-sized sites can take a few weeks or more before the new URLs settle.
- One old URL to one new URL; never send everything to the home page
- No redirect chains: old address to final address in a single hop
- Same titles, headings and main copy on launch day; improve later
- Old URLs kept in the map for at least a year
Every Wix app needs a WordPress equivalent chosen before the build, not after. Forms and bookings matter most because they are how the site earns money.
Wix Forms are the easy part. A WordPress form plugin handles contact, quote and enquiry forms, sends notifications to the right inbox and can push entries to Google Sheets or a CRM. We add spam protection, test delivery from the live server, and set up SMTP so notifications do not land in junk.
Wix Bookings takes more thought. A salon or clinic that relies on it needs services, staff calendars, time slots, reminders and sometimes deposits. Appointment plugins cover common cases. Where the rules get unusual, for example a yoga studio selling class packs, we sometimes build a small custom booking module instead, priced from ₹60,000.
Wix Chat
Usually replaced by a WhatsApp click-to-chat button, which suits Indian visitors better anyway.
Wix Members
Rebuilt with a membership plugin or custom logins. Passwords cannot be exported, so members reset them once.
Wix Events and Pricing Plans
Mapped to an events plugin or WooCommerce subscriptions, depending on how you charge.
Moving Wix Stores to WooCommerce
A Wix store moves to WooCommerce by exporting what the plan allows, reshaping it into WooCommerce's import format and rebuilding checkout. WordPress documentation lists WooCommerce's CSV importer for products, which is the usual landing point.
Products, prices, SKUs, variants and images come across in bulk. Categories need to be mapped by hand because the two systems organise them differently. Customer accounts can move as data, but not their passwords. Past orders are usually kept as a spreadsheet archive rather than recreated as live orders, which keeps the new store clean.
Checkout is rebuilt for your market: UPI and cards for Indian buyers, card and wallet options for customers abroad, GST lines on invoices where you are registered. We test real orders end to end, including stock deduction and email confirmations, before the domain switches. Store migrations start at ₹50,000, and if you are unsure WooCommerce is right, compare it on Shopify vs WooCommerce.
How do I transfer my domain away from Wix?
Either point the domain at your new host by changing DNS, or transfer the registration to another registrar using an authorisation code. Both work; the first is faster, the second gives you cleaner ownership.
If Wix is your registrar, a transfer needs the domain's transfer lock removed and an auth code. ICANN's registrant FAQ says registrars must provide that code within five calendar days of a request, and that a registrar may refuse a transfer within 60 days of initial registration, of a previous transfer, or of a change to the registrant's name, organisation or email. Check those dates before you plan launch week.
Email is the hidden risk. If your business email runs through the domain, the MX records must be copied exactly to the new DNS before anything switches. We list every existing record, recreate it, and only then move the nameservers, so mail keeps arriving during the change.
- Confirm who the registrar is and which email address controls it
- Screenshot every DNS record: A, CNAME, MX, TXT (SPF, DKIM, verification)
- Recreate records at the new DNS host before switching
- Remove the transfer lock and request the auth code
- Switch nameservers or approve the transfer, then test email both ways
Choosing hosting, theme and plugins for the new WordPress site
Pick hosting and a theme for speed and simplicity, not for feature lists. The point of leaving Wix is control, and a bloated WordPress install gives it straight back to a plugin vendor.
For most migrated business sites we recommend managed WordPress hosting or a small cloud server with daily backups, a staging copy and a server region close to your customers. The account is opened in your name and paid from your card. Another of us, who handles the team's AWS and hosting work, sets up caching, SSL and backups and writes down every login.
On the theme side, we prefer a light block theme styled to match your Wix design, rather than a heavy multipurpose theme with its own page builder. Plugins are kept to what the site needs: forms, SEO, caching, security and backups, plus whatever replaces a specific Wix app. Fewer plugins means fewer updates, fewer conflicts and a faster site on budget phones.
If speed is the main reason for leaving Wix, our WordPress speed optimisation page explains how we tune the result.
How long does a Wix to WordPress migration take?
A brochure site of up to 100 pages takes 1–2 weeks, a large blog or content site 3–5 weeks, and a Wix Stores shop moving to WooCommerce 4–8 weeks. The Wix site stays live the whole time, so visitors notice nothing until launch.
The first two or three days go to the inventory, redirect map and an itemised quote. Next comes the design on a private staging link, which you open on your own phone. Content follows in batches, blog first if it is large. The last stage is testing: forms submitted, bookings made, orders placed, every redirect checked.
Launch itself is short. We switch DNS during a quiet hour, confirm SSL, submit the new sitemap and request indexing for the most important pages. Then comes the part most gigs skip: two to four weeks of watching Search Console for crawl errors and fixing anything that slipped through the map.
What goes wrong in a Wix to WordPress migration, and how to avoid it
Most failed migrations share the same few causes, and all of them are preventable with a checklist and a staging site.
- No redirect map, so old blog and product URLs return 404 and traffic falls
- Titles and descriptions left blank on new pages, replaced by theme defaults
- Business email broken because MX records were not copied before the switch
- Form notifications going to spam, so enquiries sit unread for weeks
- Images uploaded at full size, making the new site slower than the Wix one
- The domain transferred into the developer's account instead of yours
- Wix subscription cancelled before the new site was checked in Search Console
Our rule: keep the Wix plan active for a few weeks after launch as a fallback and reference copy, then cancel. If something does slip, the fix is quick because the old version is still there to compare against.
SEO and AI search visibility after the Wix to WordPress migration
A migration is the best moment to fix structural SEO, as long as you do not change the words that already rank on day one. Improve the plumbing first, then the copy.
On the new WordPress site we set one H1 per page, clean heading order, unique titles and descriptions, canonical tags, an XML sitemap and robots.txt. We add schema for your business, services, articles and FAQs so search engines understand what each page is. Images get proper dimensions and lazy loading so Core Web Vitals pass on mid-range Android phones.
AI answer engines such as Google's AI Overviews and chat assistants quote pages that answer questions clearly. So after the dust settles, usually a month in, we suggest adding short answer paragraphs, FAQ sections and comparison tables to your key service pages. Nobody can guarantee rankings or AI citations. What we can do is remove the technical reasons you would lose them, and our AI Overview optimisation work covers the content side if you want it.
Wix to WordPress migration for Indian businesses: what changes
Indian sites have a few needs Wix handles awkwardly and WordPress handles well, which is often the real trigger for the move.
First, payments: WooCommerce checkout can take UPI alongside cards, and invoices can carry your GSTIN and tax lines. Second, language: WordPress handles Hindi or regional-language pages with proper language tags so Google shows the right version to the right visitor; you supply or approve the translated copy. Third, WhatsApp: most Indian visitors would rather send a message than fill a form, so we add a click-to-chat button with a prefilled message on every service page.
Fourth, hosting location. A server region in India, or a CDN with Indian edge locations, makes a visible difference on 4G connections outside the metros. We test the finished site on an older Android phone over mobile data before calling it done, because that is how many of your customers will see it.
Wix to WordPress migration checklist you can use today
Whether you hire someone or do it yourself, work through this list in order. Each line is cheap to do before launch and expensive to fix afterwards.
- Export Wix contacts to CSV and save a copy offline
- List every URL from the Wix sitemap and Search Console
- Record titles, descriptions and headings for pages that get traffic
- Choose a WordPress replacement for each Wix app
- Open hosting and, if moving it, a registrar account in your own name
- Build on a staging URL that search engines cannot index
- Write and test the full 301 redirect map
- Copy every DNS record, especially MX and TXT, before switching
- Submit a test entry on every form and check where it lands
- Launch, submit the sitemap, watch Search Console for four weeks
- Cancel the Wix plan only after the new site is stable
Worked example: a homestay in Coorg moving from Wix to WordPress
This is a hypothetical scenario to show how the pieces fit, not a client story.
Say a six-room homestay in Coorg built its Wix site five years ago. It has 18 pages, a blog with 60 travel posts that bring most of its Google visitors, an enquiry form, and Wix Bookings for room reservations. The owner wants lower running costs, a Hindi version of the room pages and a booking flow that takes UPI.
We would quote the static site plan from ₹10,000 for the 18 pages, with separate lines for the 60-post blog import, the Hindi pages and a booking module. Week one: inventory, a redirect sheet of roughly 80 rows, and the design on staging. Week two: blog import and a post-by-post check, room pages in both languages, the booking flow with UPI, and forms wired to the owner's email and WhatsApp.
Launch happens on a weekday afternoon, outside peak check-in time. The Wix plan stays active for a month as a fallback. For the following weeks we watch Search Console daily for 404s on old travel-post URLs, fix any row missing from the map, and cover all of it under the two free months of maintenance.
